I sat down looking at my prag stab doing its job. Very intelligent and efficient. As the nepa input hits 138v, the stab trips off and the delay timer kicks in. At 140v nepa input, the output is still above 200v. I managed to hang it on the wall some days back. I thank God for making it possible 4 me 2 purchase the stab. For the new comers, if u stay in areas with poor nepa supply(low voltage), fluctuation etc. Then you have to consider buying the prag stab. The common 5kva relay type of stab works really fine but when the real nigerian nepa scenario sets in, ur batteries risk being over charged and explosion may occur. Currently the prag 10KVA servo stab is sold for 50k. Check it on buyright.biz. |

purplekayc: Like how much wil these panels cost ,i see a lot of it@computer village when am coming in from along ,there seems to b a seller there ,how many panels do i need to power my tv 21",home theatre, one chest size frige, lappy &desktop?follow the solar thread. Read from page one. You'll find answers. Pls read them, else you may be confused. Once you read, then we may be able 2 guide u tru. You're most welcome. |
Totalgreen, thanks 4 d upload. But kindly consider myself and many others who usually browse using phones. Pdf seems a lil bit complex for us. Secondly, i want the new comers to av an idea of what energy harvest looks like considering the number of panels and battery bank we use. I want a situation where by when new comers see our harvest, they'll know that we are not even satisfied despite the bulky panels they think we own. May be they may find answers. I hope 2 post mine when i go to an internet cafe. |
Its been a while since anyone published his daily or monthly energy harvest. August rain is approaching. True test. My advice for the new comers, solar has its own limitation. You'll understand better when the daily or monthly harvest are being published. Kindly include if possible previous monthhs for ref purpose. |
Hello House, your candid advice is needed here urgently. I have been using an inverter for a while now but I want to know the specific loads it can power conveniently. The specs of my inverter/battery combo is: INVERTER Maker: Mercury Model: Radiant 1000 Input: 220Vac-240Vac,50/60Hz, 8A max, 1 Output: 220Vac-240Vac,50/60Hz,1 Battery; 12VDC BATTERY SEC Ind Battery Co. Sealed VRLA AGM CELLYTE 12FTA 155 Battery Charging Float Voltage: 12.25Vpc +/- 0.01Vpc @ 20-25C Max charge Voltage: 2.35Vpc +/- 0.01Vpc @ 20-25C I also would like to know if it can carry a SCANFROST REFRIGERATOR with the following specs: Scanfrost Fridge Voltage: 220-240V Frequency; 50Hz Input power; 68W Refrigerant: R134a 60g Volume: 130L Climate Class: T The inverter specialists in the house, your advice is sought here. Thank you
i love the details u gave. My answer will be based on d details. Yes it can power the fridge but ur batteries will discharge faster and u risk damaging the battery. So you need like 2 pieces of 200ah in parallel against ur current 150ah. So this the reason why d use of fridge should be totally discouraged on small kva inverters. Hope this helps. |
abunafiu, totalgreen, bodejohn, you have all answered well. the most important thing about solar is to start small. in my own case I started with a 4 battery bank 200a back up system years ago and today here i am! who would have thought?!
you are where u are today because u had a vision of how far u are going and u figured an economical way of travelling that distance. Something tells me you are not even there yet.....1MVA.... I.P.P........lol. We're right behind u sha. |
abunafiu: wonderful analysis. In addition to 20 pieces of 200w panels, our brother also needs a large battery bank considering number of days autonomy and 50% d.o.d. All these equals to close or above a million naira. My own example is assuming it cost 60k per panel, 20*60 is 1.2million. 60amps Charge controller 130k. Battery bank of 8 pieces of 200ah is 8*50k is 400k . 12mm cable depends on ur site, asumme 40k. 24v inverter is 40k. Now your total cost 1.8million approx. Note these prices are assumptions but current prices are within range. All materials listed are for standard installation although it excludes some finishing stuffs 2 beautify d installation. The good news now is that u can buy 4 panels @240k, charge controller @130k, cable @40k. 4 batt @200k and then 24v inverter @40k. Total is 850k. Then you add the remaining panels and batteries as u have more money. Now mr excel you see why you need to know what u want and why u want it. Guess u have 2 drop the fridge and other heavy stuffs and start gradually and see how it goes. DONT BE SUPRISED YOU EVENTUALLY MAY NOT NEED ALL THOSE PANELS AND BATTs. Once you start gradually bearing in mind ur total cost, your needs may be automaticaly adjusted due 2 first hand experience.am sorry, i went with total green's 20panels who later confirmed he assumed a 48v system. Let me use my personal system as example now. 10 pieces of 24v 120w @ 300k, 60amps mppt controller 125k, cables 30k, 4 used batts 120k. Total 600k approx. I use 2 fans , 5 energy saving bulbs, 1 fridge(6hrs daily) , 1 40in led tv, 1 tall boy home th system. All appliance i use at least 15hrs daily except fridge 6hrs. I also use Nepa for charging whenever available(sometimes 48hrs without nepa). But the thing is that i sometimes discharge my batt to 23.8v(danger) but average is 24.4v daily. Which means i dont have 24hrs autonomy not to talk of 3days. You see if i had like 20 panels and 10 batteries then my batt will never go below 24.4v and i can go 3days without nepa which is standard- but millions go hear am. |
TotalGreen: Brothers pls make i help @exxell, i think the group really would like u to understand what you are getting into thats why "i think or guess" the dont want to make it so easy.wonderful analysis.
abunafiu, truely, as the good book says: thou shalt know the truth and the truth shall set you free. as more and more people come to know more about solar, all previous misconceptions will be thrown overboard and they'll better be able to appreciate the best gift to mankind - the power of the sun.
hmmm, the best gift 2 man is d sun. Without sun there can never be transpiration=rain=plant growth=hydropower=many other freebees. Never heard of any single bad event attributed 2 d sun, well if its 2 much 4 u, there are trees 2 provide shadow. So, the God we all serve has perfected the sun 2 be d main source of energy for the earth. In my new area, power supply is so poor that my neighbours stay up to 48hrs without power. Sometimes i feel like giving out power but i cant risk a neighbours carelessness. They'll now ask 'how much is this thing?'. I answered its free from God. You only need to learn the truth and the truth shall give u free power just like i have. Hmmm, this truth bitter pass kola when they sit down and listen. Thank God for showing us the solar way which has enriched our lives further. @excell, any update?. Come up with ur power requirements. We cant wait to have u. |
Osama10: ^^^^. I dont sell panels. |
I dont sell panels. |
bjims: i have a 2.5kva 48v inverter newly installed in my house and the most powerful load on it is a small fridge.which size of generator should i buy to conveniently charge it.the tiger tg 3800 kick and start shall charge it. Its sold for btw 39 n 41k. But why spend 40k on a generator which will suck ur money from day one till its last day. Simply put some hundreds of thousands of naira together and buy urself solar panels and a reliable charge controller. Check my earlier posts for the solar link. Read up and make up ur mind. You dont need that noise making machine. |
tonyzaks: good day every1. i've a question; would it be appropriate to pair an external battery charger with an inverter to have a given amp.Yes, provided ur inverter and charger are of d same voltage. Ur total charging current will now be 10 plus 8 which results in less charging time. But is ur external charger an intelligent one?- else you risk damaging both ur batt and inverter. |

bodejohn: You need to avoid rushing into solar power if you do not want to be frustrated and join the league of Nigerians who think solar power is a fraud..@bodejohn- ure 100%. Most nigerians still beleive solar is fraud- may be because they thought it was as simple as 1+1. Hell No. Our friend here risk being disappointed if he does not take time 2 understand his needs. When i wanted 2 go d solar way, i was told 2 pieces of 200watts panel is just enough 4 me. Thank God 4 this thread, i started with 6 pieces of 120watts panel, sold off my old batteries and bought a set of 4 batteries.......and so on. Today with 10 panels and 4 batteries i cant help but ask for more.-but am satisfied with my present performance. I was able to achieve all these because i know what i want and figured an economical way of going around it. So our friend mr excel- you need 2 sit down and do those maths because hundreds of thousands of naira will eventually be involved. But the good news is that u can start small and expand as u enjoy ur system. |

bodejohn: Or else?....@bodejohn, dont mind our friend who thinks solar installation is straight forward like 1+1. So many factors need 2 be considered. Funny enough these factors vary from individual to individual. You remember when u wondered why i complain even with my 1.2kw solar panels that u dont have up to that yet u enjoy ur system. The reason simply as u figured was that i am always at home in the morg hours and most appliance including my fridge is running. As i told him, he needs to do some power economics before deciding on the number of panels he needs. I forgot to tell him that he can start little by little bearing in mind his ultimate destination. @excell, you'll never regret going the solar way. Just take ur time to study this page and then you'll know where to start from. Wish u luck. |
exxell: Please, I have a 2kva 24v inverter andI gave u d link to this thread so u can read from page 1 to the current page. From experience, bill should be the last thing to ask. You need to know what appliance you need 2 power and for how long you want to run them. You need to also figure out if ur current battery bank will be sufficient. Without knowing all the aforementioned you may be disappointed at ur solar performance. Assuming you want to charge ur 200ah batteries alone, 2 pieces of 200w panels will do depending on the vmp which shall determine if u'll connect them in series or parallel. This means you cant use any appliance while d solar is chasing ur batt. Why suffer urself when u can use ur appliance during charging-all u need 2 do is answer those questions above and do ur system sizing where u'll determine to number of panels u need. I'll stop here so that other senior members can contribute. |

dimdim001: What's the link to the solar threadhttps://www.nairaland.com/390522/solar-energy-complement-fta |
dimdim001: Enlighten us more on the one you use...like what is the watt/kva, what & what does it carry, how long does it stay on, how long does it take to charge, how much you got it...I intend to eventually go the solar way, & use it side by side with my inverter, this one that PHCN is increasing their so called maintenance feejoin the official solar thread. Solar energy complement to fta. You will get a complete analysis on how to start of. Feel free to ask and you will get answers from real life experiences. |
idsolar: Truly solar powered home sweet jo. kai i de enjoy mine in d north. i shall soon do an upgrade. no wonder George D de smile alwayspls which part of d north are u staying. Pls i wd love 2 spk wit u. Ur phone number pls if u dont mind. Thanks. |
fikfik: i agree 100%.brother, to d best of my knowledge, you need no less than 60a to start for u have nearly 100% efficiency and to handle future expansion. In my own set up- i use 10 pieces of 120w joy solar panels which i paralleled all 2geda, i sometimes get 44.5amps charging current but 34- 37amps on d average- so if had bought 45 amps controller, then i should be thinking of replacing it or which means i cant add more panels- my advice is get d 60amps and buy the few panels you can afford and add gradually. Most of us started gradually. About mixing panels, check d specification name plate- if they are d same then no problem or fall within d same range- however, if u can avoid mixing the better. Its only batteries that you should totally avoid mixing. About joy solar and other manufacturers, its up 2 u 2 make up ur mind and go for what ur heart likes. Wish u luck. |
kibukila: Thanks for all your wonderful response,I am planning to replace the battery, can I go for Ritar 100AH or there is a better brand than this?pls its better does you to buy 3 or 4 of such batteries if u can afford it. All u need to do is parallel all of them which translates to a bigger batt bank. Else ur single new batt will suffer d same fate as d dead one. Bear it mind that there is no short cut to enjoying renewable energy than doing the rite thing which may be expensive initially but in d long run it worth every kobo invested. Wish u luck. |
bodejohn: Na Chinese controllers me dey use o, if you no mind.boss pls send. Even if ur controller is aba made.....all that matters here is the knowledge shared. As chief george once said, 'so far as its working according to specification, it doesnt matter' . Your experience on these chinesse products will definatly make many of us follow u. Lets keep the green flag flying. |
bodejohn: Na Chinese controllers me dey use o, if you no mind. |
bodejohn: The only data i need from the panels are the wattage and the Vmp which i already know and wouldn't need to climb the roof to check anytime soon. The current ratings are almost irrelevant because of the MPPT controller I am using. The reason i have 5 panels in series is because my charge controller requires a minimum of 65v to work properly with my 48V battery bank. If you need these figures for any other reason or comparison, i can oblige you when i have some more time by taking the snapshot and uploading it.65v for 48v?, kindly give me a link to view the spec of the controller. Am glad we are all learning by sharing personal experiences. @ george ,The charging time i refereed to may be just imagination. And it may also be as a result of the on and off nature of the previous relay stab which kind of confuse the charging algorithm of the inverter. I only wanted a supporter to attest to if my experience is similar. I must confess, the prag guy gives me peace of mind. No more power fluctuation. |
fikfik: Uncle George, where do you get your suntech from or joy panel? can i use a 45amp MPPT for 12 250Watt panels?45amp mppt is ok wit 12 by 250w provided ur system voltage is 48v. But why buy 45amp, am of the opinion of u getting the 60amps so as 2 take care of future expansion. Some1 like oga george would have prefered a 60amps plus tristar (if it were available as at d time of purchase). So please buy 60amps and you will be able to handle future expansion easily. I personally use 10 by 120w joy solar panels, akinade too uses about 20 by 200 or 250w . Prices are a bit pocket friendly. Contact akin and george for price and performance comparison so u can make up ur mind. |
bodejohn: Oops, I didn't know you require that much details. It is however not a new installtion, the panels are already on the roof and I am not sure of when I will have time to check those parameters you require.i stand 2 be corrected. The only justification you have for connecting 5 panels in series is by knowing those parameteters.....else you are loosing power somewhere somehow. My self and Chief george had a lenghty discussion abt this and he confirmed this. He even had to revisit his panel wiring. Pls find time and revert pls. Enjoy ur weekend. |
I discovered hat since i installed the prag guy, it now takes a very long time for my inverter to charge. Infaat i have not seen it full. But the batt voltage increases slow and steady. Just my observation. Is this normal?. Bodejohn, you have not given the parameter such as vmp, imp etc of ur panels. Kindly do sir. |
