there is no point trying to explain to people who are patriotic to the point of denial and blindness. I get what you are saying but obviously not everyone does.

I wish there was more to help the poor in Nigeria honestly I do cos i think it is disgraceful that children die from illnesses that are preventable. I think it should be a national disgrace that an OPEC country has the 2nd highest maternal mortality rate in THE WORLD. In the world people - if nobody thinks that is unacceptable then I don't know what is.

I know doctors do their very best back home with the very limited resources they have or else they wouldn't be doing it - but it must be disheartening to practice medicine with facilities that are completely unacceptable in this day and age.

if people feel the need to insult those who speak the truth then go ahead, on another note why is using poverty as an insult so common among our people - medical doctors are not poor in this country so i don't get the insult if it was directed at kantama.

8 C'Grades from in Nigeria means you are really o.k due to all the marking whahala and other externalities on your exam paper and it also means you are good enuff to go abroad and score Straight A's in an American/European School.

8 A'Grades in Nigeria means you are good enuff to go to America/Europe
and read for Two degress at the same time in Four Year and also make money
on the side working part-time or run your own legit business on the side too lol!!!

this is not always the case - u are forgetting that how the young view education in America/Europe is not the same way it is viewed in a developing country. abeg leave that one I was one of those lazy students that passed my GCSE's with 10 A-C grades but could have done better as I was capable - i just did the minimum to pass and I did (thank God cos my parents would have killed me if i got anything below a C). Anyway when I went to Nigeria to write my JAMB I made the merit list for my uni (high Jamb score) and passed my SSCE (had to take some subjects not included in my GCSE for the course I wanted to study) and got A1-A3 grades so I think for me it was like seeing that education was not free and that REAL POVERTY was out there without a good education.

but with saying that I would rather get a 2.2 from a good university abroad than a 2.1 from a good university in Nigeria - cos i know which one will take me further in life.

please don't be fooled by thinking all nigerians students do well when they come to the west to study their degree - i met many (majority young men) of our naija students here in the uk who did not take their studies seriously and either ended up with a 3rd class or just did not graduate. I believe that we as a people are naturally intelligent but it has to be nurtured and educated properly so that its full potential can be tapped.

the only thing positive I can think of is the family network some people still believe in, a lot has changed in Nigeria over the past 20 years so i can't really say the sense of moarlity and proper upbringing still remains back home as I see what some of the youth are capable of and it is shocking

I hope that this topic was not started as a way of bashing nigeria as i'm sure the vast majority of us are fully aware of the many problems facing the nation.

I know this is an old topic but i had to add my 2 cents, anyone defending these fake pastors is a deluded fool.

when some of these rich pastors start using the money collected to build hospitals, schools or even buying computers for a local school then some of us sensible Christians will stop looking at these men with suspicion.

i don't know what makes people think people are deeply religious - going to church everyday, attending night vigil, dashing pastors money does not make u a religious or good christian if you go home beat ur wife, beat ur househelp, don't meet the financial responsibilities of ur family cos u dashed pastor money. I'm sure if u ask all these politicians that steal money how often they go to church they will tell u they have their own bench in the front of their church.

I laugh when i see national assembly members on TV praying and putting their hands on bible, how do they do that but steal from the mouths of hungry children in Nigeria.

English is not a foreign language in Nigeria it is the lingua franca. the official language of Nigeria is English - God help us that people don't know this.

why do people always argue this - french people don't speak good English cos surprise surprise their official language is french - if u want to do business in France u have to know how to speak both English and french. likewise the Chinese, the German and Spanish etc.


what scares me is how are these failures of today going to cope with the world of tomorrow.

i don't know about u but my father had a full time job and worked hard but still found time to teach me my times tables and check my homework and help out almost everyday.

the highest is not extra moral lesson but showing an avid interest in their education and what they are actually earning in school - but with saying that if these kids are failing now - what are they going to teach their own kids?

and people wonder why a lot of the youth back home have hidden complexes when they meet people who can display and apply their knowledge.

As a soon to be mother I feel that I have to add my 2 cents here.

This situation is worse than u all are seeing - forget how many people failed this year - these children are our future and if they cannot compete with children from around the world on an equal footing what will that do for the nation in the next 10 years. We already have so called university graduates who cannot write coherent English sentences yet claim to be educated. when the only people that can get a decent job are those educated abroad or in private schools in Nigeria - i think we are storing up problems for a frustrated future.

yes we can all sit down and say in my day my parents did this and that but i truly believe that a large section of today's parents really don't care or understand what being a parent is all about, i don't know what it is maybe they are so concentrated on putting food on the table or chasing naira they forget their fundamental duty when they bring another human being in this world.

some may say the students that failed are poor - but are u telling me that all rich people that send their kids to private school have intelligent children?? i doubt that. a lot of schools in Nigeria are not adequately equipped for the 21st century. Imagine kids here are able to submit their homework online (in the UK) however, there are children in Nigeria who will never see a computer in their school throughout their primary or secondary education. I don't want to start doing compare and contrast but some things need to be mentioned.

The government don't care cos their children are either in schools abroad or in the best private schools in Nigeria so what is their own.

Nobody likes learning and what i find extremely annoying with these kids of today is tomorrow when they can't even get a job in Mr Biggs they start blaming others for their misfortune and become parasites to members of their family who managed to do something with their life.

The problems are too complex for us to decipher here on NL but i think we should not be putting the majority of the blame on the students - please remember they are children and their secondary school exams is a culmination of what they have learnt over 5 years and not just in year 5 bad teaching will produce failing (or whatever its called). Me personally I lay the blame with the teachers, education ministry and parents. Also the wider society that now encourages students to be reality stars, footballers, politicians or musicians being academic is no longer "cool".

what is even funny is those rich folk will even leave lekki and go to india or the middle east for treatment (India kei!!!!!!! na wah o!!) is this not an embarrasment in itself. i had people fighing me a few weeks ago about hospitals in nigeria and what i found funny was they could call names of good hospitals - isn't it sad that a population of 150million are only being served with a handful of good hospitals that only a small minority can access.

the posters mother has a number of illnesses - if someone can come out here and tell me that if u call an ambulance in nigeria it will come immediately with no questions asked or money changing hands then we will all keep quiet - if not then this 67 year old lady has every right to stay in a country that will look after her adequately.

hey hey - i don't know the poster but that is harsh - i truely believe that they want the best for their mother, 80 million naira after buying a nice property and putting in the infrastucture she is used to will not last - we both know that but not everyone who has lived in the UK for A VERY LONG TIME understand that. maybe she has asked her children to control her finances - after all she is diabetic not suffering from dementia. I think the main point is this - neither of the kids can give up their job and live on a carers allowance to take care of their mother, I think once someone gets to that age its more a support system and people her own age she needs to interact with. maybe she should join a church group or like i said maybe rent out a room or get a carer to come round to look after her and also to have that human interaction we as human beings need.

personally like a lot of people have mentioned her don't send her back - for various reasons not just the medical one - she has lived most of her life here - this is home for her. being beaten up by armed robbers is no joke, and i doubt she wants to put herself in a situation where she can be exposed to that or even worse, cos lets be honest if she was only around for a holiday when it happened - it was an inside job!!!

Poster if u can hire a live in nurse or get a nurse to come round like 5 times a week that will be better. who will look after ur mother, sorry but someone that has been in the UK for 40 years will find it hard to adjust. a lot of things we take for granted here in the uk are not available back home no matter how rich u are. at her age the fear of being robbed again can even make her develop high BP alone.
