The Kaduna State Police Command said on Friday, that it had arrested a 5-man syndicate that specialised in printing fake local and foreign currencies. The State Commissioner of Police, Mr Olufemi Adenaike, while parading the suspects at the command headquarters in Kaduna, said that the suspects were arrested by his men while they were trying to deposit fake 1 million Naira currency notes in 1,000 Naira denominations in one of the banks in the state capital. Disclosing how his men apprehended the suspects, Mr Adenaike said that the 4 suspects were arrested at Barnawa area of the metropolis with two other members of the gang still at large. One of the suspects, Ibrahim Suleiman told newsmen that the fake currency was given to him to keep, by a close relation from Kano and he was unaware that what was given to him were fake currencies. Adenaike who was baffled by the large amount of money involved added that the Police were yet to establish their major marketers and where they print the fake currencies. However, they will be arraigned in court after investigation. Mr Adenaike also paraded 3 suspected kidnappers, one Abba Ali, Nasiru Abubakar and Mohammed Danlami for allegedly kidnapping and killing a 7 year old boy and another armed robbery gang for unlawful possession of firearms. He said that the suspected kidnappers conspired, killed and later buried the 7 year old Amir Aliyu, in a shallow grave, after the deceased’s father failed to pay the 1.5 million Naira ransom they demanded. The Commissioner, while disclosing other arrests made by his men, however warned that the Kaduna State Police Command will not relent in its fight against criminals, and urged the public to always report suspicious movements or characters noticed in their areas to the Police for prompt action. http://www.channelstv.com/home/2013/11/16/kaduna-police-arrest-syndicate-with-fake-1-million-naira-currency-notes/ |

The wife of the Ekiti monarch called on women to monitor their children and ward’s dressing at home before they leave the house. The wife of Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Bosede Adejuyigbe, on Wednesday advocated a law to punish indecently dressed youths in Ekiti. Mrs. Adejuyigbe, who made the call at a law week organised by female lawyers in the state, also stressed the need to establish a dress code which would be backed by legislation. She said that the legislation would empower law enforcement agents to sanction anyone found guilty of indecent dressing. “Any girl or lady dressed indecently should be flogged and arrested by the police, the Oba’s wife said. She called on women to monitor their children and ward’s dressing at home before they leave the house. In her contribution at the occasion, wife of the Oluyin of Iyin-Ekiti, Olori Josephine Ajakaye, encouraged ladies to be guided by the fear God in their dressing. “The way women or ladies are dressed at any point in time, tends to influence the way people relate to them.” “So, be guided by the fear of God in your dressing,’’ Mrs Ajakaye said. http://premiumtimesng.com/regional/149535-obas-wife-advocates-flogging-arrest-indecently-dressed-youths.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=obas-wife-advocates-flogging-arrest-indecently-dressed-youths |

A senior Nigerian military officer has confirmed to SaharaReporters that soldiers opened fire on suspected members of the Ombatse cult group in Nasarawa State last night, and killed four of them. The officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the shooting occurred at a checkpoint in Lafia, the Nassarawa State capital. He claimed that the soldiers fired in self-defense when the cult members attempted to attack the soldiers manning a checkpoint. “We are yet to get a full report from the unit that carried out the action,” said the officer. He added: “Our preliminary report is that they [suspected Ombatse members] were mobilizing to attack our men at a checkpoint. Our men opened fire on them and killed four of them. We are still waiting for the full report.” A resident of Lafia confirmed the killings, but said he was not certain about the identity of the casualties. “We heard gun shots and some of our people saw the corpses by the road side, but I cannot confirm their identities,” he said. Our military source disclosed that more soldiers had been drafted to the checkpoint. http://mobile.saharareporters.com/news-page/soldiers-fire-suspected-ombatse-members-kill-four |
A new trend seems to be unfolding in Lagos State as robbers now kill security operatives for the sole purpose of snatching their guns which are later used in carrying out robberies. The revelation came to the fore as the Lagos State Police Command arrested an eight-man robbery gang. According to Police authorities, the suspects, Ife Olubaba, Saheed Wasiu, Segun Idowu, Wasiu Rafiu, Odelade Kabiru, Waliu Sonni, Taiwo Obafunsho and Taiye Agege killed policemen and snatched their rifles. PUNCH Metro learnt that after the robbery, operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad commenced investigations after which the suspects were arrested in different parts of Lagos and Ogun states. Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, told journalists that one of the suspects, Olubaba, was a close associate of robbery kingpin, Abiodun Ogunjobi aka Godogodo. Manko said, “On October 9, 2013, a group of armed robbers shot policemen attached to Iju Police Station and snatched two rifles. On November 3, 2013, around 3am, as a follow up on the incident, SARS men launched a man-hunt and eight of the robbers were arrested in Lagos and Ogun states. “Two AK-47 rifles with two AK-47 magazines fully loaded, one automatic pump action gun, four locally made pistols and 135 live cartridges were recovered around Egbeda area of Lagos along with their operational vehicle, one Hyundai Tucson with registration number MUS350GB. “During the exchange of gunfire between the robbers and SARS operatives, Taiye Agege, who is the second in command to the gang, was fatally wounded.” The leader of the gang, Olubaba, told our correspondent that it was Agege that advised him to kill the policemen. He said they snatched the guns because the policemen’s guns were superior to theirs. He said, “It is Taiye (Agege) that is the leader of the gang, I am only the deputy. We were on our way to a robbery operation in Iju when Taiye said we should kill the policemen and collect their guns. He said the policemen’s guns were superior to ours. He then ordered the driver to reverse the vehicle to where the policemen were stationed. “He gave me a pump action rifle and he held his own pistol and alighted from the vehicle and we opened fire on the policemen. We killed the policemen for their guns. We quickly snatched their guns and drove off. Obafunsho, who is a female suspect, said she never participated in any robbery but Olubaba usually gave her money. She said, “I have never followed them for any robbery operation, I sell frozen foodstuff in Mushin and I have three children. Olubaba usually gives me money once in a while but it wasn’t until I was arrested that I knew they were robbers.” http://www.punchng.com/metro/we-killed-policemen-because-we-needed-their-guns/

ASUU President says progress was made at the meeting and that his team would take the President’s message to members After a marathon 13-hour meeting between President Goodluck Jonathan and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the union’s leader said there was a message from the President which would be presented to their members for consideration. There are however indications that the meeting, which started at about 2:40 p.m Monday afternoon and went on till aout 3:30 a.m Tuesday morning, may have yielded positive results. Monday’s meeting is the first time the president would lead government’s delegation team for negotiation with ASUU since the commencement of the strike four months ago. The presidency had taken over the negotiation with the striking union on September 20, with Vice President Namadi Sambo heading the government team. He however was unable to make any headway in the talks with the university teachers. Emerging from the meeting at the First Lady’s conference room at the presidential villa, ASUU President, Nasir Faggae said, “We have had lengthy meeting with Mr. President, rubbing minds on how best to address the problem of university education in this country.” “We now have a message from Mr. President that we are going to take to our members and we are expecting that our members will respond appropriately to the message of Mr. President.” On whether the lecturers are now going back to the classroom, the ASUU President said, “that is up to our members.” When asked to disclose the the President ‘s message that would be delivered to the members of the union, Mr. Faggae said, “I cannot tell you, it’s not for you, it is for our members.” On whether he was impressed with the President’s message, Mr. Faggae said, “Don’t put words into my mouth, our members will determine that” However, Labour Minister, Emeka Wogu told State House Correspondents that meaningful progress was made in the negotiations with ASUU, expressing hope that the striking lecturers would call off the strike. Mr. Wogu said, “We made progress, the President of ASUU told you that they are going back with a message from the Federal Government back to their members and the message is full of high expectations and hope.” On whether the strike would be called off, he said: “That is why the message is full of high expectations and hope. So our prayers is that they come back with positive outcome. They might not even come back to meet us, they might take decisions there that will meet your expectations.” “Nigerians should be patient for ASUU to finish their meetings and come out with a message to Nigerians.” Responding to whether the Federal Government made a fresh offer to the striking lecturers, the Minister said, “the offer we made are the offer they are taking in line with the 2009 agreement. The issues that led to the strike are issues contained in the 2009 agreement and we did not go beyond the agreement.” About four hours into the meeting (6:30p.m. Monday) the meeting broke for a 15-minute break. The ASUU President led his team to their bus, a white Toyota Bus with Lagos registration number, BU 190 EPE, to confer amongst themselves. While making the consultation, the ASUU leaders left the leadership of the NLC, the TUC and government representatives back at the hall. The meeting resumed at about 6:50 p.m. The ASUU President led members of the national leadership of the academic union, including his deputy, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, three past presidents of ASUU, Professor Festus Iyayi, Professor Dipo Fashina and Professor Abdullahi Sule-Kano. Other members of ASUU delegation include Professor Suleiman Abdul, Professor Victor Osodeke and Dr. Victor Igbum. The President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Bobboi Kaigama as well as staff and other members of the congress were also at the meeting. On the side of government were Vice President Sambo; Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Anyim Pius Anyim; Chief of Staff to the President, Mike Oghiadhomhe; Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; her counterpart in the Labour and Productivity Ministry, Emeka Wogu and the Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike. Also at the meeting were the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Mac John Nwaobiala; Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Julius Okojie and Director, Tertiary Education in the Ministry of Education, Dr. Hindatu Abdullahi. Synopsis of the contentious 2009 agreement The agreement included details such as the breakdown of lecturers’ salary structure, staff loans, pension, overtime, and moderation of examinations. Part of the agreement dwelt on funding of universities where both parties agreed that each federal university should get at least N1.5 trillion between 2009 and 2011 while state universities, within the same period, should receive N3.6 million per student. The agreement also had parts that asked the re-negotiation committee to ensure that at least 26 percent of Nigeria’s annual budget was allocated to education, and half of that allocation to universities. The agreement also asked that the 2004 Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, Act, and the National University Commission Act 2004, be amended. Text of the suggested amendment bills – including suggestion for amendment of the Education (National Minimum Standards and Establishment of Institutions) Act 2004 – were provided in the agreements. The agreement was signed by Bolanle Babalakin, the then chairman of Committee of Pro-Chancellors of Federal Universities; Gamaliel Onosode, chairman of the re-negotiation committee; and Ukachukwu Awuzei, the then president of ASUU. The agreement demanded a heavy financial commitment from the government and was an adaptation of an earlier agreement reached in 2001. It is unclear how much of the agreement have been implemented by the government. However, the secretary to the federation, Pius Anyim, after one of the recent failed negotiations, said that most of the issues contained in the 2009 agreement, had been fully met except for the earned allowances estimated at N92 billion. “Some of the issues which bothered on amendment of pensionable retirement age of academics in the professorial cadre, consolidated peculiar allowances (CONPUAA)- exclusively for university teaching staff, National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), setting up of budget monitoring committee in all public universities have been fully implemented,” he disclosed. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/147834-ASUU-strike-lecturers-consider-calling-strike-marathon-meeting-jonathan.html |

The Nigerian Army has denied a newspaper report that one of its former officers, a retired Lieutenant Colonel, was arrested in Yobe in an encounter with members of the extremist Boko Haram sect in the state. A Lagos-based newspaper, SUNDAY PUNCH, had reported on Sunday that the retired lieutenant colonel, who it said led the Boko Haram attacks on Damaturu, the Yobe State capital , on Thursday was arrested by security forces during the encounter. The paper further reported that the army officer was detained at a military facility in Yobe while arrangements were on to move him to Abuja for interrogation. But in a rebuttal on Monday, the spokesperson of the army, Brig.-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, said the reports were untrue. “Contrary to the newspaper report, no retired Lieutenant Colonel was ever arrested in any encounter with the Boko Haram insurgents anywhere,” Mr. Attahiru said in a statement in Abuja. “The Nigerian Army wishes to state categorically that the report was a figment of imagination concocted by some fifth columnists within the media that are desperate to malign the army,’’ it said. The statement said that the denial was borne out of the fact that the report had the tendency to mislead well-meaning Nigerians and the public. It recalled that the report claimed the Boko Haram attack took place on Oct. 24 and that the retired officer led it. Abdullahi Aliyu, the Commander of the 3 Division, Special Operations Battalion, Damaturu, had earlier on Monday refuted the report when Governor Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe inspected arms, ammunition and vehicles recovered from the insurgents. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/147451-again-nigerian-army-denies-arrest-of-ex-lt-col-in-yobe-over-boko-haram-attack.html |

The army has evolved new strategies to tackle attacks on civilians, a commander said. Islamist Boko Haram fighters who lay their arms and surrender will be not be killed, the Nigerian military has said. The 21 Armoured Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Maiduguri on Sunday said the unit had introduced new measures to counter the Islamists’ bloody attacks on civilians in Borno state. The acting Commander of the brigade, Col. Ibrahim Yusuf, made the disclosure at a news conference in Maiduguri. He said the army was willing to give safe passage to members of the sect who wanted to quit. “I want to assure you that we will give safe passage to members of the sect, including foot soldiers who are ready to surrender,” he said. “Those involved can either surrender themselves at any military outpost or go to their ward or district head. Let me say again that all those who surrendered will not be killed but will be given safe passage.” He said the army was doing everything possible to ensure that no civilian was attacked by Boko Haram in the state. The Islamists have recently targeted civilians in Borno and Yobe states more than before they were pushed out of the Borno state capital, Maiduguri. More than 200 civilians-mainly travellers- have been massacred by the group in the past weeks. The Brigade commander, Col Yusuf said the rising attacks on travellers and villagers by Boko Haram militants was as a result of frustration. “Most times, the Boko Haram members go to remote villages to kill innocent civilians in cold blood because they have been frustrated by the army. They cannot operate in the open, so they vent their anger on innocent civilians,” he said. Mr Yusuf said the military was equal to the task, and dismissed the recent attacks as signs of “weakness”. “We are also evolving strategies to make sure that we prevent future attacks, no matter how small.’’ http://premiumtimesng.com/news/national/147374-repentant-boko-haram-militants-will-killed-nigerian-army.html

Bukar Modu, a detained Boko Haram member, said that the sect had nothing to do with Islam, as it was mainly involved in armed banditry, looting and killing of innocent people. Modu, who was captured on Oct. 6 after the sect’s early morning attack on Muslim worshippers in Damboa, Borno, said this in Maiduguri on Saturday. He told reporters that the sect succeeded in attacking innocent people during their operations. “We went on a mission to attack people in Damboa on Oct. 6, a few days to the last Sallah celebration. “We shot many people but I was also shot in the leg during the operation; I later became unconscious. “My people took me away at the end of the operation but they decided to dump me in a nearby bush because they thought I was dead. “I regained my consciousness in the morning before I was apprehended by security agents, who provided food for me and took care of my bullet wounds,” he said. Modu said that he was recruited into the sect by his cousin about a year ago. “He used to keep his gun in our compound in Maiduguri. One day, he said that he was not comfortable with me being outside the sect because I knew all his secrets. “He gave me two options: to either join the sect or be killed; so, I had no other option than to join the sect,” he said. Modu said that he was given an “express training” on the handling of AK 47 rifle as soon as he joined the sect. “We were always given orders to attack individuals without questioning until we finally relocated to Marte in Marte Local Government Area of Borno during the middle of this year,” he said. Modu said that his group comprised about 150 militants, who took refuge in a nearby bush after the military invasion of Marte camp. “We were kept in the bush by our commanders; sometimes, we survived on filthy water because we did not have access to safe water and we barely had something to eat,” he said. Modu said that most of the “foot soldiers” of the Boko Haram sect had wanted to abscond but they could not do so because of the fear of being caught and executed. “Our commanders usually conduct roll-calls on a daily basis to prevent anybody from running away; once you are caught, the penalty is death,” he said. Modu said that many “foot soldiers”, who tried to escape at the camp, were summarily executed. “Any time we carry out an attack in a place, we steal food, drugs, money and everything we need. “Sometimes, I feel guilty of committing crimes against God but our commanders always tell us that it is God’s work that we are doing. “It is a terrible thing to be a member of the sect but many foot soldiers like me cannot leave for fear of being killed,” Modu added. The terrorists were armed with rocket launchers. At least 37 members of Boko Haram were killed when security operatives raided a secret camp of the insurgents at Alagarno Village, near Maiduguri, Borno State. This was made known in a press statement issued on Tuesday by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations of the 7 Division, Aliyu Danja. Mr. Danja said the operation was jointly carried out by the Nigeria Air Force and soldiers of the 7 division. “Troops of the 7 Division of Nigerian Army launched an attack on Boko Haram camp located in Alagarno. The operation which commenced on Monday 21 2013, involved a coordinated ground and air assault by troops of 7 Division in conjunction with 79 Composite Group, Nigerian Air Force, Maiduguri. “A total of 37 terrorists were killed in the (shootout) while several others fled with gunshot wounds. Arms and ammunitions were also recovered, three Hilux Vehicles and several motorcycles belonging to the terrorists were destroyed,” said Mr. Danja. Mr. Danja also confirmed that several Boko Haram members died during Sunday’s attack on Logomari Village. According him, about fifty Boko Haram members, armed with AK 47 rifles and rocket propelled guns (RPGs) had blocked Gambor/Ngala-Dikwa road at Logomari. He said during the attack, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, the terrorists killed four civilians, destroyed two fuel tankers and snatched an Isuzu pickup vehicle loaded with provisions. “The terrorists fled the scene on the arrival of troops of 7 Division,” he said. He also disclosed that Boko Haram had also attacked some members of the Youth Vigilante Group (Civilian JTF), who were returning from a funeral, killed three of them, and set their vehicle ablaze. “The youth vigilante who escaped however reinforced, pursued the terrorists and destroyed their hideout, killing several terrorists while others escaped,” he said. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/147060-soldiers-raid-boko-haram-camp-kill-37-terrorists-nigerian-army.html |
Robber takes car to pastor for blessing, police nab him in church By TheHerald Admin on October 21, 2013 A man, Yinka Oyeniran, who was nabbed after he kept a Toyota Camry snatched by his gang members in a church has been remanded in prison custody after his case was charged to court last Friday. Forty-five-year old Oyeniran was arraigned in Magistrates’ Court 2, Iyaganku, on a two-count charge of conspiracy and robbery. He was accused of conspiring with others at large to dispossess a woman of her Toyota Camry car with registration number LSR 292 AT in Ibadan, along with other valuables. Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Olabisi Okuwobi-Ilobanafor, had told journalists recently that Oyeniran was arrested in his church in Gbongan, Osun State through the collaborative efforts of policemen from Oyo and Osun States who laid ambush for him after they traced a car that was snatched in Ibadan, Oyo State, to the church premises. Though Oyeniran attended church regularly and deceived members of his church at Akinlalu junction in Gbongan, that he was a fervent and devout Christian, God proved to him that He cannot be mocked as his criminal acts became exposed through the car he kept in the church premises. Oyeniran, an indigene of Gbongan but who farms in Modakeke town, also in Osun State, had told his pastor and members of the congregation to rejoice with him over the purchase of a Tokunbo Toyota Camry car. Unknown to the pastor, however, Oyeniran and his four-member gang had snatched the car from a woman in Ibadan. Crime Reports gathered that the four-man gang which operated with the use of motorcycles, trailed their victim from a fellowship centre to her residence at Kute Wofun area of the city with an unregistered red Honda motorcycle on August 10 at 9p.m., and robbed her of the car valued at N1.3million. Not only that, the armed robbers reportedly collected the woman’s handsets, handbag, Blackberry valued N67,000, jewellery valued at N100,000 and a sum of N120,000 cash. Unfortunately for the armed robbers, the car was tracked to Oyeniran’s church where he hid it. Crime Reports learnt that Oyeniran was forced to push the car into the church premises when it stopped working after it was demobilised. In an interview with Crime Reports when the accused was paraded by the Oyo State Police Command, he mentioned his gang members as Taiye Victor, Tunde, an okada rider and another man whose name he claimed he did not know. The accused also revealed that he had gone for robbery on two or three occasions but denied ever using a gun, saying that the guns they were using belonged to other members. Describing how the operation was carried out, Oyeniran had said that it was Taiye who held the gun while he held a pipe they used in threatening their victim. He also said he was the one who collected their victim’s money, handsets as well as car key while Taiye demanded for the original documents of the car and removed its number plates. He however said he tore the documents into shreds and threw them into the bush on the way to Gbongan so as to avoid the scrutiny of policemen on the highway. Before Oyeniran confessed his deeds, he had initially denied snatching the car, telling the police that he bought the vehicle for N1million from Taiye who purchased it from Cotonou in Republic of Benin. The accused said he paid N200,000 upfront and gave an additional N300,000 when the car was brought, claiming that he was still owing Taiye a balance of N500,000. Other items recovered from the suspect, according to the PPRO, included one unregistered red Honda motorcycle, one red Nissan Sunny car with registration number AP 406 SGB, a bunch of keys and a rectum cable wire The sitting magistrate in Court 2, Mrs Oyediran, ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the case till November 19, 2013. http://www.theheraldng.com/robber-takes-car-pastor-blessing-police-nab-church/ |
The president’s convoy helped the injured in Ekiti state The advance team of President Goodluck Jonathan’s entourage, returning from Ado-Ekiti on Sunday rendered emergency rescue services to accident victims on the Lokoja-Abuja highway, witnesses say. The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reported that the accident, which occurred at Okpu village, few kilometres after Lokoja, involved two cars carrying 11 people. A Nissan Almera car with registration number AH 47 KAA going to Lokoja and a Honda Accord model with registration number BG945BWR en-route Abuja, were involved in the accident. The two vehicles had a head-on collision with serious impact, causing varying degrees of injury to the occupants of the vehicles. The accident occurred few minutes before the presidential motorcade came by the scene, NAN reported. Mr Jonathan was in Ekiti state over the weekend on an official visit. As the convoy arrived, the president’s security team rescued victims trapped in the two cars. The front door of the passenger seat of the Nissan car was axed before a middle aged woman, who was inside, could be rescued. The medical team, led by Dr Aliyu Usman of the State House Clinic, rendered emergency medical treatment to the victims, aided by two nurses. A policeman in uniform yesterday in Abuja shot a man in the leg after an argument on who should pay for a bottle of beer. The incident occurred at a beer parlour, popularly called ‘Yori-Yori shop’ located on the Ebitu Ukiwe Street, Jabi District around 2pm. Witnesses said the policeman was under the influence of alcohol before he fired his gun. Patience Patrick who serves as a salesgirl in a nearby shop said “the policeman came to Yori-Yori shop around 2pm and ordered for a bottle of beer. He was offered a chair and he sat holding a gun. He drank the beer and stood up with the intention of leaving the shop. The lady selling beer then asked for her money, which is N250, and the policeman refused to pay and told the girl to keep quiet. “The lady started crying and begged the policeman to pay the money but the officer ignored her and got out of the shop. She followed him outside, crying and while she was pleading with him to pay the money one man intervened and urged the policeman to pay for the beer took. He even told the police that his failure to pay the lady would tarnish the image of the police force. The policeman who looked drunk was angered at that point and he slapped the person in the face and threatened to open fire on anybody that talked to him again. So, man, too, was not happy with the way the policeman slapped him and he demanded to know why. Both men started arguing and the policeman engaged his gun and shot the man in the leg. He fell down.” She said when the policeman was sure that the man fell, he moved away from the scene, but before he could go far “people mostly attracted by the sound of the gunshot gathered and started beating the policeman. He was severely beaten by the crowd and fell. A police patrol team later came and picked him up in their van.” She said Bigee was taken away by the police and another group of policemen later came back to the shop and took the lady away. “That is why the door is locked.” Our reporter later went to the beer parlour and met a lady inside, who claimed to be a sister to the owner. The lady, who will not want to be named, said “the shop owner is my sister but not biological sister. I heard what happened and went to the police station in Utako to see her. I met her there and she has already made statement and has gone to the General Hospital, Wuse, to the man shot by the policeman. I was told the policeman is in detention but I haven’t seen him.” When contacted, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Utako Division, Mr Usman K. Umar, a Chief Superintendent of Police, confirmed the incident to Sunday Trust. When our reporter contacted the Police Public Relations Officer Altine Daniel, the officer also confirmed the incident, saying the police officer involved is Sergeant Oludare Ariyo of the Special Police Unit Base 7, who was posted to RCC Construction Company, Utako, Abuja. The PPRO said, “He left his beat and went to Kpana Village for a drink, but ended up shooting one Joseph Martins, alias Mr Big, over a small altercation. As a result members of the public descended on the policeman and took away his arm. A quick intervention by the police led to the recovery of the weapon, but with its magazine. Also, the police rescued the officer from the mob.” The Police spokeswoman said further that the victim sustained fracture on the leg and had been admitted at the General Hospital, Wuse, Abuja. She added that, “the officer will be dealt with according to the law, even though he is not of the FCT Police Command. The victim is in the FCT, so the FCT Police Command will take it up. First, he left his job to a drinking spot. Secondly, he shot a civilian. These are two serious offences.” She appealed to FCT residents to go about their normal businesses as the police would do everything possible to ensure that such incident does not happen in future. http://sundaytrust.com.ng/index.php/news/14752-policeman-shoots-abuja-resident-over-beer |

Prof Rufai says it is now unfair to ask her to speak on the strike. The immediate past Minister of Education, Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufai, who was sacked from the federal cabinet last month, has joined the ongoing strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, which she desperately tried to break while in office. PREMIUM TIMES enquries at Bayero Universities, Kano, BUK where Mrs Rufai was teaching Education Curriculum before joining the Jigawa State cabinet in 2007 and later the federal cabinet in 2011, revealed that although the former minister had returned to the institution, she was yet to commence work as a result of the ongoing industrial action. Public Relations Officer of BUK, Mustapha Zaharaddeen, told this newspaper in a telephone interview on Wednesday that the former minister had joined her colleagues in the strike. “How can she teach? She has joined the strike,” Mr. Zaharaddeen said. “She has no choice. How can anybody teach? Don’t forget, ASUU National President is from BUK.” When PREMIUM TIMES asked Mrs Rufai on Wednesday if she had joined the ASUU strike, she merely retorted, “It is an unfair question. Ask my university.” Efforts to reach the ASUU President, Mr. Fagge, was unsuccessful, as his mobile telephone number repeatedly indicated it had been switched off. Mrs Rufai, the first female education minister from the northern part of Nigeria, was sacked from the federal cabinet alongside eight other ministers last September 11. The other sacked ministers were Olugbenga Ashiru (Foreign Affairs), Hadiza Mailaifa (Environment), Shamsudeen Usman (National Planning), Ama Pepple (Land, Housing and Urban Development), Ita Ewa (Science and Technology). Ministers of State for Defence, Power and Agriculture, Olusola Obada, Zainab Kuchi and Bukar Tijani, respectively were also relieved of their positions. Mr. Jonathan is yet to appoint their replacements. Before she was fired, Mrs Rufai, who became Education minister in 2011, was a member of the Governor Gabriel Suswam-led Federal Government negotiation team, which held discussions with ASUU officials led by the Union’s President, Nasiru Fagge, who incidentally teaches at BUK. However, the government team could not make any head way in resolving the issues that led to the strike which is now entering its third month, until Mrs Rufai left government, unceremoniously http://premiumtimesng.com/news/146741-ASUU-strike-failing-resolve-crisis-ex-education-minister-ruqayyatu-rufai-joins-strike.html |
Police said the man asked a traditional ruler in Ogun state to for ram for Eidel Kabir A 50-year-old man who claimed, falsely, to be an Aide-De-Camp to President Goodluck Jonathan, has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command while attempting to extort money from a traditional ruler in Agbado town of the State. Police said Hassan Ayinde claimed he was an army colonel, and approached the traditional ruler of Agbado, Adedayo Shyllum in his palace on Monday soliciting for money to purchase ram for the Eidel Kabir celebration. The suspect, said to be from Ifelodun Local Government Area of Osun State, pressed the monarch to convince him of his role in the presidency as an aide; but the monarch, suspecting foul play, informed the police. The man was arrested by the police after interrogation. He confessed to the police that he was a dismissed Air Force officer, trying to make ends meet, a spokesperson for the police said. He further claimed that he attended the military school in 1979 and posted to Zuru Kebbi State as last corporal; and that he attended the Nigeria Defence Academy in 1980 and passed out in 1985. The fake colonel said he worked with the presidency in 1997 before he was dismissed in the year 1999 as a Wing Commander. When contacted, Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the case, adding that, the suspect also claimed to be residing at the National Defence College. “He is cooling his feet in our custody and will be charged to court at the end of our investigation,” the spokesperson said. The command appealed to the general public to beware of such fraudsters who may want to dupe them of their earnings and always contact the police whenever they are in doubt. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/146737-fake-jonathan-adc-arrested-while-seeking-ram-money-from-ogun-chief.html |
I belong to the school of thought that claims thus: “ We all came to religion in our individual ways and we each needed to respect the religious practices of others, seeing as it was up to every human being to find his or her own way to heaven”. This logic can also be extended to our tribal/ethnic origins and geographic locations. It is a sociological thing that should crave the understanding of every human being on earth. It is what has brought order to the world and why a Black man is sitting pretty over there as the President of the United States of America. Furthermore, a society that does not open its doors to other cultures is bound to be stagnant in the race for development. The more exposed a society is to education, the clearer an understanding of this reasoning. That is why the Boko Haram sect, in its present form, content and execution, will never thrive in the Southern section of the country. It is not only in the North that you experience abject poverty, it abounds everywhere along the coasts of the South. In fact, the oil producing area of this country is a paradox in the study of wealth and poverty. Recently, the papers reported of a notorious kidnapping kingpin named Kelvin, trying to become a modern day Robin Hood to his people in the South. In one week, he was fished out by the security agencies from where he was hiding. Why is it not possible to get Shekau and the key Boko Haram leaders in the North? With the understanding of the above, it is clear that the Boko Haram war would have been needless if the elites and leadership of the North had fed the largely illiterate masses with correct information. A lot of towns and villages in the South survive, not because of government presence but through community, co-operative and town development unions. It is very clear that, with our political structure- the way it is now- over-bloated centre, impoverished states and local governments, corrupt leaders and politicians, nothing much is expected from government. Due to the illiteracy in the North, a myth has been created out of the Boko Haram sect. They are far gone into delirium of being unaware of the fact that the destructions being created have impacted deeply into our existence. Whose duty is it to pass this knowledge to the largely illiterate people of Borno and neighboring states? I ask so because, a few years ago, a state governor from Borno was quoted in the newspapers as saying that he was happy his people do not read newspapers, when he was being fired by the Southern press for keeping 70 jeeps in his fleet. Ironically, this state is the headquarters of the Boko Haram sect today. Let us not beat about the bush, the principal cause of the Boko Haram insurgency today is the woeful failure of the Northern educated and political elites to give the people the right leadership and training; instead they use the people for their own selfish and political aggrandizement. The creature has now grown into a Frankenstein monster that does not separate the shepherd from the sheep, all is game to it. They are killing Christians, Muslims, students, women, children; and -wait for it- , people who cannot find solution to the simple problem in their domain, now want to rule the whole country as president. I say simple because, if the issue had been handled very professionally from the beginning, we would not have gotten to this stage. There is an unwritten rule in the field of criminology that no law enforcement officer must be killed by the criminals, no matter the level of provocation. Whenever such a thing happens anywhere in the world, the authorities ensure that the culprit is quickly identified, apprehended and summarily dealt with. This rule has been torn to shreds in Nigeria. Policemen and military officers are slaughtered like cows in their numbers. Barracks- supposed garrison- have been sacked. Not one decisive action from our Police and Military authorities to discourage a re-occurrence. War is a serious matter, it involves lives. Failure that leads to loss of lives to both the uniformed and civilians should not be treated with levity. How did Boko Haram men over run our military posts/barracks, taking with them spoils of war like ammunition and vehicles? Were our sentry guards sleeping? Definitely, there is a gap in our planning and execution of this Boko Haram war. We have too many saboteurs amongst the rank and file. If that is the case, is our army not a professional one? Do they not have procedures for dealing with saboteurs? Everyone along the line that has been involved in failed operations, including commanders, must be sanctioned, unless there are genuine causes for pardon in exceptional cases. A drastic situation requires a drastic remedy. Still on saboteur issues, the army and police authorities should post men who are familiar with the terrain to contain the insurgents. By this I mean, people from BornoState in the Armed Forces should be sent to the area to contain their own people and if they fail, they should be held accountable. With the level of destruction, it is clear that majority of the Boko Haram fighters are not Nigerians. No sensible person will help bring destruction to his homeland to the extent the Boko Haram have gone in the North. The authorities must begin to look at the international connection to this. Nomads from Mali, Somalia, Niger and so on, are the foot soldiers for Boko Haram. There is also a total disconnect between our intelligence officers and the people. Without information, no war can be won. It is very important that the forces on ground carry the people along. The way the insurgents are carrying on- killing the civilian JTF supporting the army- there will soon be loss of confidence on the people’s part. Every successful strike by the Boko Haram is a direct indictment on all our intelligence agencies; we have many of them. Present day war is based on intelligence. It does not matter the caliber of your arsenal, you must be able to infiltrate the rank of the opponent and checkmate their next move. Intelligence! Intelligence!! Intelligence!!! This is the key. It is time for all to wake up, as the security of the nation is the responsibility of all, no exception. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/10/so-the-boko-haram-has-become-invincible/ |
Following the recent threat by members of the Boko Haram sect to strike during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar has called on all heads of operational units and commanders of the force nationwide to be committed to their duties while ensuring a peaceful and incident-free Sallah celebration. The police boss also ordered commanders in-charge of the Police Special Forces – the Air Wing, the Maritime Command, the Counter Terrorism Unit and the Border Patrol Units to ensure purposeful and strategic deployment of their personnel and logistics to ensure all criminal threats are effectively checkmated. A statement from Force headquarters signed by CSP Frank Mba said, “This directive is contained in a Police signal issued on October 12, 2013, by the office of the IGP addressed to Assistant Inspectors-General of Police in-charge of Zones and State Command, Commissioners of Police.” “As the Muslim faithful in Nigeria mark the 2013 Eid-el Kabir, the Inspector-General of Police, Abubakar has ordered all heads of Operational Units at commands and formations of the Force nationwide to put in place high visibility policing strategies targeted at achieving a secure, peaceful and incident-free Sallah celebration. “Commissioners of Police are to adequately protect all essential infrastructure and vulnerable points, including highways, motor parks, and places of worship, shopping malls and recreation centres. “In addition, Commanders of Police Mobile Force Squadrons are to ensure that their respective Quick Reactionary Units remain on high alert throughout the holiday period.” Continuing, the statement said, “The IGP reminded Operational Commanders that though the nation is on holiday, Policemen are not on holiday and all Commanders are expected to remain at their beats and posts throughout the Sallah period.” However, officers and men deployed for the Eid-el Kabir celebrations have been urged to conduct themselves in a most professional manner, in line with the Force Code of Conduct and Professional Ethics and other extant laws regulating the rules of engagement. http://dailypost.com.ng/2013/10/14/boko-haram-police-ig-warns-unit-commanders-to-be-at-alert-during-sallah/ |
Attempt by a middle-aged man to present himself as a senior police commissioner and curry favour from unsuspecting government agencies in the Federal Capital Territory, has backfired, exposing him as fake Assistant Police Commissioner. Convinced that Kunle Adeshola, who also goes by the names of Dr. Kunle Shoal, Dr K. Adeshola and Sunday Mealayeshe Adekunle was not sincere in his exploits, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, immediately arrested and detained him in their custody. A statement from the commission made available to Vanguard yesterday, described the suspect as a serial impostor and self-acclaimed Assistant Commissioner of Police who has been parading himself as an operative of the EFCC and defrauding officials of government agencies under the guise of conducting phantom investigations. The statement, which was signed by EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, said Adeshola was nabbed on Thursday October 10, 2013 while trying to hoodwink the head of an unnamed federal government agency to write a letter supposedly to the Inspector General of Police to transfer him to the EFCC. According to the agency, the unsuspecting CEO wrote the pleading with the IG to second the fraudster to his agency with a view to sanitising the place. It was however leant that the suspects pocketed the letter and made the CEO to believe that the IG had sanctioned his deployment to the agency and was about to resume work there. However, EFCC agents arrested the suspect before he could “resume duties” at the agency. At the time of his arrest two fake identity cards were found on him, one of the cards bearing the name Dr. K Adeshola (ACP) identifies him as a staff of a nonexistent EFCC Monitoring Unit while the other is a police ID card with number: APF NO. 02576 with the name, Dr. Kunle Adeshola Search in his apartment in Lugbe, a suburb of Abuja yielded a number of documents suspected to be fake. They included copies of NYSC Exemption Certificates and blank copies of University of Jos certificate http://www.nigerianeye.com/2013/10/efcc-arrests-fake-police-commissioner.html?m=1 |
The Federal Government has fired a civil servant in the Ministry of Information for writing an article considered critical of the Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. In the letter communicating Yushau Shuaib’s removal from service, the government also referred to him as Assistant Chief Information Officer even though he was promoted Chief Information Officer with effect from January 1, 2012, suggesting that he might have been demoted as well. The former spokesperson of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, was sacked for writing an article, published by PREMIUM TIMES, alleging that some appointments by Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala were lopsided. The article, titled, “Still on Okonjo-Iweala over Controversial Appointments” published on March 6, also called on the minister “to ensure that appointments into important positions should be done in credible and transparent manners that can withstand public scrutiny.” Angered by the article, PREMIUM TIMES gathered that Mrs Okonjo-Iweala asked the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, to discipline Mr Shuaib. According to Mr. Shuaib, the finance minister telephoned him and fumed that he accused her wrongly in the article but that he remained undaunted. He was afterwards recalled from his post in NEMA, with his salary subsequently suspended. But in a letter circulated to his friends and associates on Wednesday morning, Mr. Shuaib announced that he had been eased out of service in the guise of retirement. He said, “Finally on Thursday October 3, 2013, I received a letter of retirement from the Federal Civil Service, which was backdated to June 20, 2013. Though the letter erroneously referred to me as Assistant Chief Information Officer (ACIO) (because as a fact, I had been promoted a Chief Information Officer (CIO) with effect from January 1, 2012), it contained the charge that I was retired for criticising a public officer. “I had made up my mind about the civil service that I had served diligently and professionally without allowing myself to be influenced or intimidated by anyone. “I had been summoned, issued letters of queries and confronted with verbal threats in the vain hope that I would retract the write-up and tender an apology. Of course, I stood my grounds in the same way that I had politely declined the minister’s request during the telephone conversation.” Mr. Shuaib was hired by the federal civil service in 1993 immediately after completing his national youth service assignment, for his dedication and service. As a corps member, he won the best writer and researcher award in Delta State for his brilliance and dedication to service. He also won the NYSC National Honours Award. He served in Federal Ministries of Information, Finance, Health, National Assembly, Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), National Press Centre and finally National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) as either Press Secretary or Head of Public Relations. Despite working for government, Mr. Shuaib remained one of the most published commentators on public affairs in Nigeria, explaining government polices and subtly criticising public officials from time to time. Information Minister Labaran Maku had told PREMIUM TIMES in April, when Mr. Shaibu was recalled from NEMA following the article, that it was not Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala that requested him to punish Mr. Shuaib. In a text message response to enquiries by this newspaper, Mr. Maku, through his spokesperson, Joseph Mutah, said then that Mr. Shuaib’s redeployment was in order. “The Honourable Minister of Finance didn’t authorise the redeployment and doesn’t have to do so. Such matters are within the purview of the Public Communication and Human Resources Departments,” he said. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/146282-nigerian-government-sacks-civil-servant-criticising-okonjo-iweala.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=nigerian-government-sacks-civil-servant-criticising-okonjo-iweala |
