Nigerians are always looking for short cut, but there isn’t any in our quest for economy prosperity. At the moment 1 Naira is about 7.5 South Korean Won, yet Korean economy is world class. 1 Tunisian Dinar is equivalent to 0.78 US dollar. Now does it mean that Tunisians are far much better economically than Americans? No , because this is all about numbers that are not economically significant. We have to look at our balance of trade with the world. Well only sell oil and import millions of items. We run a monotonous economy and cannot be competitive in the global market place. So long as we have this disparity in foreign trade, Nigeria will forever remain a backward country economically. China is even devaluing its currency so that the world will consume more of its products. Good balance of trade is what keeps your money strong not by artificial means. This is another exercise in futility. http://www.oanda.com |

Soludo commends Intercontinental Bank Posted to the Web: Tuesday, August 14, 2007 ABUJA — Central Bank (CBN) Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has poured encomiums on Intercontinental Bank Plc for its achievement as the first bank in Nigeria to cross the $1 billion capital mark. Prof. Soludo made the commendation while receiving the board and management of the bank who paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Abuja last week. According to the CBN Governor, “I wish to congratulate the board and management for your achievements. “As soon as the result of The Banker Magazine ranking was released, I got a call from London informing me of your achievement and I called your Chairman immediately to congratulate him. You have dared, you have overcome, you are still soaring and you have lived up to your name, Intercontinental. I want to again congratulate your board and management,” he said. Intercontinental is rated the world’s second fastest growing bank by The Banker Magazine which also ranked it the number one bank in Nigeria, number five in Africa and the 355th biggest bank in the world by first tier capital. According to Soludo, the CBN will honour the pledge it made last year to allocate an extra $500 million of the nation’s foreign reserve to the first bank that crosses the $1 billion (N130 billion) mark in tier one capital, to manage. He said: “Yes we made a promise on allocation of foreign reserve management and the promise, we are bound to keep.” Dr. Raymond Obieri, Chairman, Intercontinental Bank, who led the delegation thanked Prof. Soludo for his foresight and courage, adding that the mission of the visit was to thank him and also inform him and his team about the rating of the bank by The Banker Magazine. He described the award as an honour to the Central Bank. But Soludo noted: “I would want to put the credit back to you people for this achievement. It has made our job easier, because you people took up the challenge and survived to become the leader. You have showed character and capacity.” According to the bank’s Group Chief Executive, Dr. Erastus Akingbola, the bank’s global rating is the fulfillment of the vision which the bank set for itself three years ago, adding that the management had set a new vision for itself to be number one in Nigeria, number one in Africa and among the first 100 in the world. http://www.thebanker.com/cp/34/p165table.jpg http://www.vanguardngr.com/articles/2002/cover/august07/14082007/f514082007.html |
darfur, Can you specifically tell me where Nigerians have gone wrong in criticizing the government? I want specifics not by telling me that we should be happy that Nigeria is not like Zimbabwe or Liberia. I got a question for you. How can you work hard to elevate that company you work for to a greater height when your top management does not consider you as an asset? You have an idea and you want your top management to take a look at it and they say to you don’t worry we already know and are working to implement it. Years go by and nothing is done. How can you effect a change in your organization without management approval? The government does not listen; a World Bank chief said that on Vanguard. http://www.guardiannewsngr.com/news/article07. How can you help a government that does not believe that increment in pump prices will hurt Nigerians vis-à-vis our economy. |
Nigeria should be at par with South AFrica and Egypt not Zimbabwe. Besides Zimbabweans had it good before land redistribution. Can you tell me when we had it good |
Zimbabwe launches $200,000 note Zimbabwe is to start circulating a new 200,000 Zimbabwe dollar note, in a bid to tackle the country's inflation, the highest in the world. The new note, issued by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe from Wednesday, can buy 1kg (2.2lb) of sugar. Food and fuel shortages have become common as the government relies more heavily on imports, pushing prices to new heights. The official annual rate of inflation in Zimbabwe is nearing 5,000%. In practice, this means the price of a loaf of bread costs 50 times more in cash than it did a year ago. Shortages The new note is worth US$13 at the official exchange rate or $1 on the black market. Zimbabwe's government has created a commission to find a way to control soaring living costs. But correspondents say that as long as Zimbabwe has a shortage of staple foods, including maize, food shortages are likely to continue. Critics have blamed President Robert Mugabe's policies, especially the seizure of white-owned farms, for ordinary Zimbabweans' hardship. For his part, President Mugabe has accused foreign governments of trying to interfere in Zimbabwe's affairs. The new banknote comes after International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecasts that by the end of 2007, prices will be 1,000 times higher than they were a year earlier, Reuters news agency reports. "Price controls that are being enforced are likely to exacerbate shortages and ultimately fuel further inflation," said Bio Tchane, director of the IMF's Africa department, who described Zimbabwe's prospects as "bleak". Believe Strongly in Assets Declaration, Says VP By Tokunbo Adedoja, 07.31.2007 Following conflicting interpretations given to his recent comments on declaration of assets publicly by political office holders, the Vice President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has clarified that he believes strongly in the principle of assets declaration by public officers. He said he had infact declared his assets seven times in the past eight years including a recent one following his assumption of office as Vice President. A statement issued yesterday by Ima Niboro, Senior Special Assistant (Media and Communications) to the Vice President dispelled insinuations that Jonathan was intransigent on the issue of assets’ declaration. The statement said the Vice President was embarrassed "at the alarming headline with which Vice President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan’s remarks at an interactive session with journalists in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, over the weekend, were captured thereby giving the wrong notion that he was against assets declaration,” Niboro pointed out. "I want to note that the Vice President never at any point said he would not make public his assets. The fact is that he has seven times in total, before the Code of Conduct Bureau, which is the public institution charged with the issue of assets declaration. "Dr. Jonathan’s first declaration was on inauguration as Deputy Governor, the second at the end of the first tenure. His third declaration was at the beginning of the second tenure as deputy governor while the fourth was at the end of that tenure. The fifth declaration was on inauguration as governor; the sixth was to close out that tenure, and the seventh, on inauguration as Vice President." The Vice President's spokesman said Jonathan had pointed out in that session with newsmen that he fulfilled all particulars of the law concerning his assets declaration and that he has done so consistently since he was deputy governor of Bayelsa State. He pointed out that his choice to declare to the Code of Conduct Bureau was guided by the fact that he has always declared in that manner, even as he commended President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, who by choice has always published his declarations. The Vice President expressed sadness that theb slant given the story by some reporters had created a negative impression in the minds of the reading public aboutb his disposition to the matter of assets declaration. He stated that he was not aversed to making assets declaration by public officers public. http://www.thisdayonline.com/nview.php?id=84915&printer_friendly=1 |
There are South African and Egyptian billionaires on Forbes. Enough of this racism. I don’t know why Nigerians always play race card whenever they do not meet up to the benchmarks. We are over satisfied with little progress, that's why Zenith Bank was all over the airwaves because of their partnership with London stock exchange without telling us that Anglogold Ashanti of Ghana has been trading on New York Stock Exchange since 1998. |
If Nigerians in Diaspora say such things you should not even be viewed as Nigerians. Abandoning your country and adopting another countries way of life and citizenship status should mean you really aren't Nigerian anymore. You might be of Nigerian descent but you certainly are no longer Nigerian. These days you don’t even need a Nigerian to tell a foreigner that Niger delta is bad. Instead of us to criticize Peter Odili, Alams, FG and co who stole what belonged to these renegades who are causing a lot of damage to Nigeria than Nigerians living abroad. Tell our govt to develop Niger Delta instead of chastising Nigerians for criticizing Nigeria. Why do we continue to live a lie of Nigeria that was bestowed on us by colonialists. Ofcourse I firmly believe Nigeria deserves even more criticism than it receives. Not from outsider ofcourse as most of the time they do not even know where Nigeria is much less what life is like there. But any Nigeria in diaspora who has become a citizen of another country should focus their criticism on there newly adopted country as they essentially abandoned their former motherland by claiming another countries citizenship Myopic estimation of Nigerians. Some times most of these folks are more abreast with what is happening in Nigeria than Nigerians living in Nigeria with the quantum of information they have at their disposal. ICT has buried all those barriers so quit living in cold war mentality of Nigeria. You need to read the recent Foreign Policy magazine on Nigeria. |
Sugar was listed on the market a few months ago, it has very little or no debt as of then - google for a Dangote Sugar Refinery prospetus that may So money was never borrowed to build this refinery? So it just IPOed to raise some money and put them in the bank? till be laying around and you can source some of that info from there. Yes, the IFC and local banks will give you credit facilities for a project but you must still come up with your down payment Which means that he has huge debt portfolio. About this statement you made, what sense does that really make? So because Dr Mo Ibrahim was not ranked as being richer than Oprah then Dangote couldn't possibly be richer than her? Common sense tells you that Dr Mo Ibrahim made more money from selling CELTEL than your calculation of Dangote's worth and yet he does not make it to Forbes list even though he is involved in a multi billion dollar business. I think that with Dr Mo Ibrahim's achievement and connection he could have challenged Forbes if he is a billionaire. As per not listing the guy from Ethiopia, Mittal steel is listed as a Brit not as an Indian on Forbes |
Some Nigerians cannot cease to spit hawkish ignorance. Go to America and see how liberals and conservative criticize ther government. The same holds for UK. There needs to be constant criticism of Nigeria in order to stir the minds of people on how to move the country in the right direction. How can you improve without criticism? Practical example is that the grade you receive from your teachers is a form a criticism. Likes of Soyinka and Achebe constantly submit their works to be critiqued. Why does Nigeria deserve less? Dafur, I would want to answer my questions. Maybe you are telling us that the elections were not mired in fraud. The only reason why she is right in your thinking is that she (Baroness) has not felt power failure, never lacked medical care, never been without a running water etc. She cannot in her myopic imagination empathize what Nigerians go through. The reason why you think that we cannot talk about bad governance in Nigeria is that you really have not imagined what good leadership is because Nigeria has never known one. Your comparison of good leadership could be drawn from two benchmarks ie good and bad leaderships, but you have only tested one, so when your leaders tell you that we cannot move beyond big talks and dreams, we throw party for them. Any system that is not open to criticism is going to self destruct like Hitler. Nigeria is a society that does not take evaluation. We have insisted not to overly criticize Nigeria and today our nation is squalor and we still want the status quo to remain. Abacha was not criticized and he became a living monster. Corruption thrives in Naija because people like you have tolerance for it. The reason why Nigerians are trooping into S/Africa is because Nelson Mandela was critical of apartheid. The reason why Nigerians cluster at American Embassy is because Martin Luther King was critical of segregation. For you to resist a system, you have to be critical of it first. Criticism lays the foundation for violent or non violent movement. There must critical thinkers who will synergize ideas and bring them into fruition. By the way , are you saying that Nigerians do not need basic things of life or that Nigeria cannot afford? |
Even his attorney asserts that he is an American citizen why all these connections to Nigeria? If he had been convicted of a crime in no-nonsense Singapore, would America or Nigeria come to his rescue? Go figure |
Baroness is a paid agent of OBJ. She even castigated those who insisted that last elections were mired in fraud. How on earth would she ask Nigerians to accept that results knowing fully that they were below international standards to the point that a meth dependent welfare sucker in Britain would not stand it. If Brits, despite and in spite of their advancement could criticize their country who are we not to criticize our country. I will post these questions. Would enroll your kids in the same primary schools you attended with the hope that will get ahead in life? Would you rather study in South Africa than in Nigeria? Would you rather be treated of chronic illness in S/Africa than UNTH? Answer these questions truthfully and tell me if you are blindly patriotic or critically patriotic. It’s like saying that if you do not support the mission, you are anti military. |
Iyke-D What was the closing price of Microsoft today? So Bill Gates owns all Microsoft stocks? Does Dangote own all the stocks of Dangote Sugar with liabilities? I believe that the most capitalized stock in Naija is NB Plc which is partly owned by Heineken with a huge debt portfolio, It’s foolhardy to infer that Dangote has a lot of money and does source for funds from capital markets. International Finance Corporation invested about $75 million in Obajana Cemebt factory. He needs to separate his gross worth from his net worth. There is no way Dangote can build a mega factory without external capital inflow. If Forbes did not list Dr Mo Ibrahim, founder of CELTEL who sold the company for $ 3.4 billion. Who is Dangote to say that he is richer than Oprah? I thought Soludization of Nigerian banks had shown to Nigerians that there had not been mega banks in Nigeria and as such, Dangote cannot be richer than top tier banks in Nigeria. |
Calling Mr Jimoh an idiot without looking at his facts is shear ignorance. How can Dangote say that he is worth over $1.5 billion without stating his gross? Oprah’s net worth is about $1.5 billion dollars not her gross worth. I know for sure that Donald Trump claims that he is worth more than where Forbes ranks him, but the onus is on Trump to prove Forbes wrong. You cannot say that you are worth more than Oprah when your debt is very high. Tell us how much you owe and your worth, and then we can do the math. |
For folks who are spinning this, facial appearance does not depict nationality. There is no mention of the fact that he was born in Nigeria, so he was born , bred and buttered in America. Emeka Okafor is not treated as a Nigerian in the American press. Former NBA player. John Amaechi who came out to say that he was gay has not been called a Nigerian. How is Nigerian image at stake with regard to this amateur ganster? He is an American citizen of Nigerian descent. By the Dr John Agwunobi, US Assitant Secretary of Health is an American of Nigerian descent. |
what are lawyers doing in Nigeria? let human right lawyers slam them with law suits and demand for monetary compensations |
I think there is nothing Nigerian about this guy. If we are thinking that he got Naija passport, didn’t Andy Rooney of CBS show his Nigerian passport on 60 Minutes? He was born, bred and buttered in America, his mom happens to come from Nigeria. So this is like “my mom says that I am from Nigerian”. Trust America press, if he had been born in Nigeria and became a naturalized citizen, they will tell you. Let them treat him as one of their own. |
where is CNN's link on this story please? Back it up fellas |
Is this dude really a Nigerian or a Nigerian decent? |
Hi fellas, We have to agree that are there innumerable problems in Nigeria. I don’t know why we think it’s Ok for Nigerians to treat fellow Nigerians shabbily and inhumanely? It was not Ok for white colonialists to rule us with iron fist, but it’s acceptable for our leaders do as they please. Do Nigerians really deserve less? The reason why western media keeps portraying Nigeria in bad light is because there is no good progress on economy, human and infrastructural developments to OFFSET our bad image. We take 2 steps forward and 8 steps backward. We have no balancing act to counter western stereotypes. South Africa for instance has an emerging economy. Their economy is growing to point that they have the largest economy in Africa because they have created wealth for middle class, while in Nigeria, more and more people are getting poorer and infrastructures are deteriorating. I have some questions for all you blind patriotic Nigerians. Can you enroll your kids in the same elementary you attended? Can you enroll your kids in the same High school you went to? Would you allow your baby to be delivered in that same hospital in your town/village/ city where you were born? Don’t even talk about our universities. If we do not talk about these man-made problems our rulers will think that we are OK with the status quo. This is a sign of a country that has sunk into abyss of desolation. We must jettison this idea that all is well with us. All is not well with Nigeria. WE MUST CHANGE THE STATUS QUO |
Nigerians are always good at talking of mega ideas, but do not know how to build a hut. Mega NEPA, power is still epileptic, Giant of Africa still crawling, Mega GSM networks, services are still unsteady. Mega Transcorp. Mega NNPC, Mega NTA, Mega Ajaokuta steel. Why can’t we jettison this mega mentality and start from small ideas that will give rise bigger innovations. Most ideas start from drawing board and materialize into a gigantic feat , but Nigerians think in opposite direction that's why we are hedging toward retardation |
objective of the eyes is 2 to see good and ugly , but your brain is wired to make a distinction. I went on a date with a girl who had a V - neck top that was showing her cleavage and it seemed to that she was a little uneasy becuase she was using her hand to cover her flesh, but I told her that I was not staring and to my surprised she said that she would question my sexuality if I did not glance at her cleavage. |

I don't know why Nigerians always want to blow their trumpets. Why hasnt Dangote been listed on Forbes magazine? Even Dr Mo Ibrahim of Sudan who built CELTEL into a multi billion dollar company is not asking for accollades. Mo Ibrahim sold the company for billions of dollars, yet he is still not comparing his wealth to anybody. Folks are just talking, is Dangote talking about his gross worth or networth. N200 billion Naira is alot of money folks unless we are talking of stolen funds. Dangote's investments will find him out when he reaches a billion dollars mark. Isnt easy to become a billionaire in Naija when you underpay for a refinery to the tune of $1.4 billion http://www.thisdayonline.com/nview.php?id=83454&printer_friendly=1 PH Refinery Under-Priced by over $1.4bn, Says C’ttee |
