Well,i am 22+ & neva celebrated one in my life.Infact i dnt remember cuz we were nt used to it in my family.So it amazes me whn people attach much importance to bday.i am d last rose of d family,so i grew up seeing nobody payn attentn to it.whn i was a little above & below 18yr old,i was always jealous of friend who recieve special affectns on D-day,but as i grow older,i come to see as kids stuff ,so me thinks,i have finally come to accept my family traditn.as strange as that may appear to some folks here,i wuld argue & disagree till i am 10ft below d ground level if u claim dt ur parent & siblns are more lovin 2 u than mine.Paraphrasically,i have d best family in d whole universe.Not even bill gate with a promise of multi-milion $ batch party can change my mind.

"I am writing for those who are planning for higher studies. Probably the most frequent question comes to applicant’s mind is “What is most important for admission?” There is no common parameter that what I understood form my application and admission experience. For US/Canadian universities it seems applicant’s GPA, class rank (merit position), Statement of Purpose (Why interested in MS/PhD), GRE [as a standard measure for all applicants' admission test] and TOEFL for international students are important, research papers are very important when someone is applying for PhD or Research Assistance ship [one way of funding when one work for one professor's project and get tuition fee waiver and stipend for living].

For admission in US and most Canadian universities GRE act as an admission test which is required for all applicants including American or Canadian students. Why GRE is important because the applicants are from all over the world and when applicant’s university is unknown to graduate admission committee they look to the applicant’s GRE score for evaluating the applicant (and GRE act as a standard for all applicants as everyone has to take it no matter form where applicant did his undergrad/MS from). If GRE score is low and the university is pretty unknown then the chance become very low for acceptance.

Then TOEFL especially the spoken part is really important for those who wish to have a funding as a form of teaching assistant ship. TA ships are very competitive and given only to few applicants including American, Canadian or students coming from English spoken countries. If someone’s GPA or all other parts of profile are superb but TOEFL score is very low then chance of getting TA ship is rare because as a TA one has to interact with undergrad students and has to help the labs or grade their projects/quizzes and answer their queries.

Students have to submit both GRE and TOEFL scores for a application not either one. GRE and TOEFL are different exams and both are required for north American universities.

If you do bad or do not even participate in GRE and TOEFL then even if you get your admission, you might face problem getting your visa if one visa officer ask you for your GRE and TOEFL score. You may get admission into some low profile universities in US/Canada with low GRE or TOEFL score or even without appearing at GRE and TOEFL but when funding or good university is a concern then GRE and TOEFL matter. When you have admission but no funding offer form a university then it would be real hard to get a visa. But those who have funding offer VISA is nothing to worry about especially in US unless it is a real bad luck. [font=Lucida Sans Unicode]I know US embassy is even arranging seminar (I attended on in US Emabassy of BD) for attracting more students to apply for US as because last couple of years number of applicants decreased in alarming rate to US regarding VISA hassles. But now visa is real easy if someone has funding offer from a good university but they will definitely look to your profile for finding whether your sole goal for going to US is study.[/font]

Once students cross the minimum requirement of GRE score of one university say 1300 or Toefl iBT 100 then other factors become important like research paper (if applying for research assistantship or PhD), GPA and class position. Overally it is a whole package of your profile to make a successful application to get funding and admission.

If you have good scores in GRE and TOEFL then the whole world is open to you. So why not work for GRE and TOEFL from your early student life? It would hardly take 6 months for GRE and 1/2 two moths for TOEFL to make good scores. Work hard for building your future. Good luck. ""

Guys I am  very grateful for the sincere & priceless advice given to me so far.May GOD bless each and every on of us.Its not easy to ignore but i am convinced of my weak case before the consular.I would rather face the CO knowing fully well that I can defend any question showered on me in convincing tone.After all the effort and resources used , its not easy but all is well.I will heed to your advise.I will ignore the admission so, will be applying for MSC once i am through with my bachelor degree in chemical engineering.I will be through by next year so NO LONG TIN.I will start gathering information now concerning  good and affordable schools and what kind of test i can take to boost my chances for scholarship.I am thinking about taking GRE , what do you guys suggest?

HAPPY NEW YEAR FRIENDS.I am a regular follower of this thread for more than a year but never had a reason to comment or ask questions. Now I have one & I want everyone to help me. I will soon be going to the embassy for my f-1 visa and here is a brief detail of my academic standing.

Presently, I am a 400level student of university of Ilorin studying chemical engineering. Immediately after my 300level academic section, I applied as a transfer student to a varsity in NEWYORK with 1st choice program as CHEMICAL ENGINEERING and 2nd choice as COMPUTER SCIENCE WITH MATHEMATICS. Now I have been given admission to study COMPUTER SCIENCE WITH MATHEMATICS.I have also been asked by the school to forward my statement and passport for them to issue my I-20 but I am quite reluctant to go forward with the process due to how I perceive my case from the angle of the CO. There is a big question, I may have problem giving a satisfactory answer to, if actually asked by the CO.

CO: Why leaving your program (I am already in 400level) to start over somewhere else, isn’t that a waste of time?

**** Note that I applied as a transfer student and the school promised to evaluate/analyze my already taken courses, I know I have taken most of their 1st  & 2nd year courses (they are general courses & I saw it through their website), so I may be lucky to be enrolled in year 2 or 3.can I pick points from this to assist my answer.

Hello Ade, since you are currently in yr 4 why don't u wait one more year and finish at once then apply for masters.
It would look better from any angle if u do so.
Transferring now may raise all sort of questions and mind u, even if u get the visa, u might be required to start from yr 1 which is a waste of time.

Personally, I think you do have a good intention to study in America but those funny VOs might see you as a potential immigrant. If Nigeria is a country like China, I am 100% sure your visa would be approved at first attempt.

from the link above,seems like rejection of visa base on just 'going

i got some schools that allow transfer before the start of the first semester and few charges like 500dols for it,while most charge nothing.So i think they dont really welcome d idea dts why some do charge.well i think i wil consider one of those dt charge like 500dols so dt i wil be relieve and assume that they wil bear no grudge and wil faithfuly transfer my sevis number.

Guys i need ur advise on going to a community college in US.I dream of schooling in usa but the highly xpensive tuition fee usually placed on international student has not let me.I am thinking of using a comunity college as a steping stone towards advancing to any university after completing 2years of study in a comunity college.According to my findings,after 2years one can then go to a university as a TRANSFER STUDENT and spend the 3rd to 4th year after when one will be awarded a bachelor degree.To me,it seems like a cheap way of landing an internationally recognized degree.So,after readn a lot of opinions on nairaland(travel section),i got some info that i wil neva get a visa,infact a poster wrote that trying to go to a community college is a RED FLAG (indicatn that i am only desperate to leave the country) before a consular.good nairalanders,pls advice me on how i can go about it.i dont have the finacial resources to cope in a 4-yr university without working myself to the point
