ell77: Ha. Good afternoon. There have been a lot of posts here. I am not going to quote them all.
To all those who wish to leave Nigeria and feel they have the means to do so. Go ahead. Just plan well and you will be fine. But don't assume just moving abroad will be fine, do it in a well-informed and structured way. My question remains, if you leave and take care of your own family only, since you know this will not improve Nigeria, is there anything you believe you can do to improve Nigeria?
I personally believe every person can have an impact, for some they need the funds to do so, for others it's the right knowledge or support, for others it's having the time to do it. For others it's a combination of these things. Those who are complaining Nigeria is so bad because of the government (which is true), when you move out (after planning well) and making a successful life for yourself, do you believe it makes sense for you to invest back home for your own descendents to have the choice to go back and even your neighbours who were not able to leave with you? What it sounds like to me is people are happy to leave (fine) but think it's strange for someone who is abroad to help communities back home.
If potential investors in the diaspora and even in Nigeria are reading their thread they will give up on Nigeria. I do not give up on Nigeria because I have seen poverty and want to alleviate it, I have witnessed incompetence and wish to correct it.
I would love the government to change and be the government Nigerians deserve. But I believe, it may take a long time and we don't have to wait for that. We can make changes ourselves. Those changes might be small, but once successful maybe others will follow suit. As I said before, someone has to make Nigeria good for those who remain there (either by choice or by circumstance)
Also please note incompetence exists all over the world in every profession. If you have done your research (highly recommended), you will find not everything is guaranteed once you leave Nigeria and perhaps you will not only be ready but can protect yourself.
On a personal note, I find it very disappointing that people who actually believe in making Nigeria better are attacked whilst people who call Nigeria garbage are supported. If you live in Nigeria and are suffering, and I mean really really suffering. Who will affect your life positively, the naysayer who plans to leave the country and NEVER look back or those who want to help Nigeria (either based abroad or in Nigeria - even if that person feels they need to leave first because of the current condition but will eventually help Nigeria)? Gooday sir, I have a friend who relocated a few years back. He couldn't get any meaningful job in his new country and spent years as a cleaner. He wants to come back home but he's ashamed as no money to prove he went abroad, he even sold his father's land before travelling. Now he's so broke and full of hate. Sometimes, I suspect he's on Nairaland posting hateful comments because of frustration. Don't be surprised at people's behavior, I must say some people are acting that way for different reasons, jealousy, hate, ignorance etc. I respect you Sir |

There are many, very many foreigners living in Nigeria. Whites, Indians, Arabs, Lebanese, Nigerians, Togolese, Chinese, Ghanians, Ivorians, I repeat many more nationalities living here quietly and peacefully. |

TheCongo2: Yeah we pay tax in Canada but we also get money back from the government. In addition to that, we get a lot of free services. Free or subsidize education, free healthcare and so on. You people are enjoying but we have free schools here. Public schools are free up till secondary. One can't compare the standard to that of private schools but some are okay by African standard. If you pay tax up to 30% of your income then those things you mentioned are not actually free because you've been taxed for them. Here, people evade tax like anything TheCongo2: Yeah we pay tax in Canada but we also get money back from the government. In addition to that, we get a lot of free services. Look at the time frame it takes to learn a skill, chose one that doesn't exceed a year to graduate, apply yourself to it and the sky will be your limit |

Never you forger tax and cost of living. For example you can still get face me I face you house in Nigeria for N20K a year in some parts of Nigeria. Single room self contain can still be from N60,000 and above it depends on the area. You can never get this cheap rate abroad, plus tax and other items. Anybody doing menial job abroad will work for many years before they can afford to put up a decent structure in Nigeria unless they are into drugs or other shady stuff. It takes years of hardwork to accomplish such things |

Otherwise, it makes absolutely no sense to me! In the end, the child would have to renounce one citizenship if they cannot keep up with both taxes. Canadians pay higher tax but earn lower salaries compared to Americans. The US dollar has more value than CAD. |

geebaby10: Okay. I get you a tiny bit. But the rights and benefits of Canadians and Americans in other countries are no so different. Ease of migration is almost the same for both passports. But I agree healthcare isn't 100% in Canada but you can afford it. In America that you have the healthcare, the costs can run you (even as a citizen) dry plus the healthcare system in Canada will improve. America has a higher unemployment rate for college graduates and how about the violence in America? Black people are prominent in America because there are a lot of them. For every successful black person in America there a 100 living in poverty. So let's take the whole picture.
But it is as if you didn't read my epistle. My child is part of a family and not a stand alone human being. So decisions should be made for the whole family including future children to come. In this case I cannot live in the US with my child and if anything goes wrong next year I risk loosing my PR in the long run. So in this my situation is the US passport really better? What is your husband's view on this? If he is okay with it then go ahead, give birth in Canny then you can travel to US to be with your family after a week or two. Personally, I will prefer US passport for my children even in this situation. I will prefer my kids to attend US higher institutions so this will make my choice easy to make. If you don't foresee your children attending school or migrating to US when they become young adults, then no need for US citizenship. I wish you successful delivery madam |

Travel › Re: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by Affordablerent: 4:27pm On Mar 29, 2018 |
geebaby10: Thanks for your comment. Honestly right now money in secondary. My husband is of the same opinion but after all my reading I am yet to see any major way in which the US passport is superior. So please share your point of view.
From what I know they seem to be the same in value. The visa free countries for both passports are the the same for any country we care about visiting in the foreseeable future and the quality of life in Canada appears to be better. The quality of education is the same as well at least until university level and the child can enter the US freely.
Then is the US passport of my child of much value to my family as a whole when we the parents need a visa to enter the US? By God's grace, I will never live separately from my child(ren) until maybe university. So, the value only seems to come in when the child is 18 and can file for us parents to be citizens but if we live in Canada for long enough, we will have Canadian passports that is of the same value and we won't need a US passport that "desperately" and to be honest I can imagine myself living in the UK or in Canada but not in US.
Then what if my child is denied entry into Canada next year? I won't leave the child alone in the US or in Nigeria so if the issue isn't rectified on time I lose my PR. So after a few years all we would have is US passport for one child instead of Canadian passport for one child and Canadian PR for parents with the chance to give our other children Canadian passports stress-free because we would be living in Canada. So in the interest of my entire family is the US passport really worth more than the Canadian passport?
Please let me know what I am missing. It seems Oga is right on this. The opportunities in US are much more than in Canada, I'm yet to see a black person in Canada reach the same heights in politics as those in US have. Quality of life in US varies from state to state, we need to consider each of the states as a country to look at things with a clearer picture. As a US citizen, your child will have more rights and opportunities in other countries if he or she decides to explore or migrate elsewhere because Americans are well known for their cunning diplomacy. They make things somehow easy for their citizens living in other countries, not just America. The good thing about Canada is free healthcare but sincerely, will you compare the healthcare system of both countries? I'm yet to hear of anyone travelling to Canada for medicals except to give birth for passport purpose. Doctors are few compared to patients and waiting period to see doctors can be long. Some Canadians even travel to America for their medicals. |

@Geebaby10, may you birth safely. In my opinion you should give birth in US. You can't compare the worth of an American passport to that of a Canadian one(think of the future not only money to be spent). If your child has an American citizenship, Canadian permanent stay and Nigerian passport, he or she is covered all round. |
