Why is Burnaboy Hates So Much?

Fact or Fiction?

Right from the time Damini Ogulu popularly known as Burnaboy burst into the Nigerian Music scene in 2012 with his hit song ‘’Like to Party’’, there has never been a doubt about his musical ingenuity which has grown in leaps and bounds towering far above his peers, and becoming arguably the most consequential artist of an entire generation.

So why is someone like him hated? Is he really hated or this is purely a false perception?

Why would someone who has risen from the street of portharcourt city, Nigeria, to becoming a global star be hated in his home country?

Burnaboy has personally brought joy and pride to Nigeria with music which is relatively even more politically conscious than that of his peers.
For someone, who was inspired by Afrobeat Legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, it is not surprising that he has followed his footstep and has risen to global superstardom over a period of 10 years and he is just 31 years.

Is he really hated?

The answer is Yes and No but it not that simple. Burnaboy’s perceived hatred by the generality of Nigerians is fictional.

However, his brand as an artist has been at the receiving end of what many might consider hateful.




Here are the top 8 reasons why Burnaboy is perceived to be hated:


1. Stan Wars:

There is a constant battle for supremacy among the fans of the biggest musicians in Nigeria. This has largely shaped the perception that Burnaboy is really hated because of ‘ ‘banters’ by rival artists' fanbases in Nigeria.

 The Nigerian music conversation, especially on the internet, is dominated by Fans and stans of Various artists including Burnaboys, Wizkids’, and Davidos’ among others, thanks to the poor and deplorable level of music journalism in Nigeria.

Burnaboys fans are called Outsiders, Wizkid’s fans are called Wizkid FC or FC and Davido’s fans are called 30 Billion Gang or 30BG- These three are by far the most dominant fanbases in the Nigerian music scene.

Wizkid Fc is considered the most notorious because of their tendency to pick fights with other fanbases. In their ploy to defend their favourite artist-Wizkid- they make all sorts of social media posts (fact and fiction) just to prove that Burnaboy is not as great as Wizkid.

Burnaboy fans (Outsiders) also respond to this social media post with their rebuttals but it has far less impact because Wizkid Fc seems to have a far larger number of members.

What I find really fascinating is that these rival fans throw banters at each other artists on a daily basis, sometimes going overboard, without blocking each other. Some of them are even close friends in real life.

So do they really hate Burnaboy? I don’t think so. Most of these fans don’t even believe some of their assertions and would go on to state contradictions later.

For most of these fans, like in football where fans support their teams, they have a sense of duty to defend their favourite artist by putting down others.



2. Nigeria’s peculiar Musical taste buds:

In the early years of Burnaboy's career, he was more of a Reggae/dance hall artiste until he fully transitioned into Afrofusion in 2016/2017.

Unfortunately for Burnaboy, Reggae is not a popular genre of music in Nigeria, its beloved by many but not as much as indigenous Afrobeat which has been on a  meteoric rise since the early 2000s.

For this reason, the African Giant struggled to establish himself as an A-list artiste in Nigeria because of their preferential taste for a percussion base tune.
In fact, some people will claim, Burnaboy didn’t ‘blow’ till 2018, but that is not true because he has had a series of hits song before then including Like to party, Yawa Dey, Soke,  body to body, Pree me among others, all across three major projects.

So when foreigners finally got hold of Burnaby's song, they fell in love with him since then.

This has been described by many as hatred of Burnaboy’s craft seeing how long it took him to become an A-list in Nigeria despite being a hugely talented artist- probably the best on the continent

3. Emergence in the Industry:

Burnaboy started singing in the late 2000s in Portharcourt Nigeria before moving to Lagos in 2011. He had his first hit single in 2012 and has not stopped since then.
However, it took him another 6 years to finally break and establish himself both locally and internationally because his talents were at variance with the level of success he had achieved in the early years.
He struggled to replicate the success recorded by young artists like Wizkid, and Davido in their early years
Many assumed he struggled because he was not loved by the industry or was being discriminated against. But this is hardly the truth because he actually has a lot of successful hit songs then but lagged behind because of his mediocre management structure.



4. Victim of his own Success:

Since Burnaboy broke into the international music scene with ‘Ye’ off the ‘’Outside Album’’ in 2018 he has not looked back since then.
He has since released three more albums- African Giant, Twice as Tall and Love Damini,- All of which have been nominated for Grammy.

He is the first contemporary Nigerian Artist whose album would be nominated for a Grammy. He also won the BET award 3 years in a row- 2019, 2020, 2021.

He has had musical features with the best musicians around the world including Ed Sheeran, Khalid, Stormy, and Polo G among others.

This has unsurprisingly attracted jealousy from some of his colleagues and rival fan bases. But the generality of Nigerians is proud of all his achievements.


5. Public Scandals:

Damini has never pretended to be a stereotypical good boy but somehow he has managed to find himself somewhere around trouble if not making trouble himself.

His first scandal was in 2013 when lost the Next Rated award at Nigeria’s most prestigious award show- The headies. It was reported that he stormed out of the venue because he thought he has been cheated. Rumour has it that he is still angry with the organisers of the Headies and has never acknowledged their nomination

It was also reported that Burnaboy had once fired his biological mother as his manager. In a culture where humility and respect are considered sacred, especially towards elders, firing his mum was unacceptable ( he has since rehired her)

Another scandal was reported in the news that he alleged got into an altercation with Davido at a club in Ghana and he physically assaulted his colleague.

Other scandal includes his public spat with Ghana’s dancehall artiste, Shattawale, where they both made horrible allegations of sexual assault against each other.

All these and more have shaped Burnaboy’s public perception at least locally.


6. Poor Public Relations Management:

Every successful artiste needs a very sound public relations team to help with branding and image management. But burnaboy seemed to have suffered seriously in this area. Either he does not have a good public relations team or they have a bad strategy because they have done a very poor job.
For most of the scandal, Burnaboy has been involved with, his management has hardly ever released a press statement or made a strategic move to redeem the artiste's Image.
Most recently, Burnaboy was allegedly involved in an s shooting incident at a club in Lagos Nigeria. The artiste only responded with a sarcastic tweet and his management made no press releases.
I consider this to be the biggest problem with Burnaboy public perception. People hold on to some of this scandal and try to use it to put him down.


7. Predictability: obsession with validation:

Damini Ogulu is a genius by all standards. He proved himself repeatedly and he prides himself as the African Giant.

While all the above may be true, it seems his personal perception of self is not enough, he needs external validation from others.
His most public show of this was when he famously lashed out at the Coachella for writing his name in small font calling himself ‘’An African Giant’’. He went on to name his next album African Giant and the name has stuck since then.

Some other times, the outcome is not as positive. He would get into a petty arguments with fans of rival artists or even attempt t correct some of his musical statistics.

Wizkid FC have notoriously exploited this by constantly going at him with all sorts of tweets, even though they may not mean it


8. Relationship with other Artists:

Many artists who have worked with burnaboy have described him to be an amazing and professional artist while others have had reservations about his attitude.
The worst display of his relationship with fellow artiste was the incident between him and Reekado Banks who had offered to take up the Musical challenge Burnaboy posted online.

Burnaboy ridiculed him by turning Reekado banks down.
It's unclear what their relationship is like in real life but that encounter on Twitter left fans really divided

There is hardly anything particularly unique about Burnaboys experience with the fans in his home country, Nigeria. Wizkid, Davido and other top artists have to endure trolling, insults, and fake rumours as well.

If you are familiar with the Nigerian Music scene, you would know that there has been a long-running debate about who the greatest contemporary Afrobeat artist is.

This debate has been solely between Wizkid and Davido, powered by Wikzidfc and 30BG-the fanbases of both artists respectively.

Even though Davido put up a very good fight with several hit songs but he was mostly surpassed by Wizkid who is obviously more musically talented and charismatic.

Apart from the fact that Davido admitted to the fact that he was inspired by Wizkid, he has never been able to match Wizkid’s musical success both locally and internationally.

This was largely the case between 2013 and 2018, but Burnaboy joined the debate when he broke into the international market and became the first contemporary Afrobeats artist to be nominated for the Grammy in the Best Global Music Album category.

Since the debate will not go away we came up with a parameter which would objectively assess each musician’s accomplishment and rate them against that of Wizkid– who International System of Unit(SI Unit) as far as African Music is concerned

2021 is considered the most successful year for Wizkid.

Wizkid has well over 50 major awards.

3. Years Active Since break Out

Since then he has had 3 more nomination wins winning won; Best Music Video- Brown skin Girl, Best Global Music Album- Made in Lagos and Best Global Music performance- Essence.

5. Sold Out Arenas
Wizkid is the first Afrobeat Artist to sell out the Iconic 02 Arena in London in 2018.

Since then he has sold out several other times, and most recently for three nights in 2021 with tickets selling out in record time.

Made in Lagos has also sold over 420,000 units in the United States and should be eligible for Gold Certification later this year

Wizkid won Artist of the year at the 3rd Apple music award in 2021.

The award show which started in 2019 extended it recognition to African artists in 2021 seeing Wizkid snatch the award. He was also recognised in 2021 when Made In Lagos was recognised as the most streamed Album.

When Damini Ogulu popularly called Burnaboy announced the title of his of 6th studio Album to be ‘’Love. Damini’’, it was met with mixed reactions going to his tendency to use more emphatic and intrepid lexicons.
Since signing to an international record label, Atlantic Records, Burna has moved from ‘Outside‘ to ”African Giant” and then ”Twice As Tall”- all compelling and concordant with his image and charisma.
”Love, Damini” as a title added very little to the wave of anticipation that normally greets Burnaboy’s album announcement.
It was the summer of 2019 when Burna announced the title of his next album to be African Giant. It was hardly surprising that he went for such a title which was perfectly fitting for someone who prides himself as the greatest musician on the planet. Whether his outburst with Coachella over the use of Small font for his name was the main inspiration for the title is beside the point- Burnaboy is definitely a Giant in his own right and he needed to codify this status into his craft.
African Giant album announced Burnaboy perfectly to the world with a long list of hit songs, followed by an endless streak of records. It became the first Nigerian pop album to be nominated for a Grammy, which in itself was an unimaginable fit just 12 months prior.
Then came ‘‘Love, Damini’‘ in 2022 after 2 years of waiting!
If there was ever a doubt about Burnaboy’s ingenuity, his latest album clears the air.
He led the way for the album with his Smash hit ‘’Last last’’ a heartbreak song that become a global sensation thereby setting the tone and expectation for the main album. His thunderous and powerful delivery on the lead single is very hard to ignore.
Catchy, appealing, memorable and relatable is the perfect way to describe ‘‘Last Last”– go and ask Tiktokers!
With ‘‘Love Damini’‘, Burnaboy proved for the umpteenth time that he is capable of doing any genre of music- he literally can’t be boxed.
The album details the journey of a young Nigerian man navigating the world as he turns 30 reflecting on his life choices, goals, dreams, hopes or the lack thereof all wrapped with a perfect blend of melody, compelling vocals and incredibly outstanding music production.
He carefully reflected on pain of heartbreak, and the sorrow of losing a loved one, while also encouraging himself to dream wildly and live intentionally.
Burnaboy’s ability to deviate from the norm of just singing about women or frivolities and committing himself to use his music to tell us about life was further accentuated by this project.
The guest features on the album could not have been better selected. He perfectly started and ended the Album with the iconic group from South Africa, Ladysmith Black Mambazo. They helped curate the tone for the project while also bringing it to a close
None of the nineteen songs on love Damini is lacking in melody, lyrical depth and rhythm
Thanks to Burnaboy’s emboldening Vocals, his 6th studio project ”lacks skips” as they say in Nigeria, Burnaboys home country.
From J. Hus’ smooth rap entry to Ed Sheeran’s duet with Burnaboy to Khalid’s sonorous swinging vocals without missing out on the Reggae chorus powerfully delivered by Popcaan and of course Victony’s Amapiano spice, every single featured artist on the Album sat beautifully on the project like Icing on a cake.
Burnaboy has outdone himself again just when we all thought he could not do better than Grammy-award-winning ”Twice as Tall”.
This must be not just the best album released by Burnaboy but the best released from the entire continent in the last five years.
I honestly don’t know if Burnaboy will ever be able to do something better than this.
So just how bad is this album?
It is really bad if you mean ‘badass’, it is a badass album- the best I have seen from an Afropop star!
I will be surprised if Love, ”Damini” does not add another Grammy award to Burnaboy’s shelf.

For thousands of years, what women really look out for in men has not really changed. The same set of qualities the cavewomen found incredibly attractive is very much the same city girls look out for in men.
The cavewomen desire men who were strong; who could hunt; who could protect them among other things. The modern-day woman looks out for the modern-day equivalent of those qualities.

These qualities have varying weights or relevance when it comes to making a choice from an array of suitors women have to deal with.
The following are ten of those qualities:

Confidence
Most women associate masculinity with boldness, courage, and charisma. It's tolerable if a woman is shy or timid but it almost unforgivable for a man to be timid.
Confidence is one of the few qualities a woman notices almost immediately she meets a man. Every man that intends to have a place in a woman’s world is expected to have the barest minimum. This confidence could come in different shapes or forms. It comes in the man’s ability to face difficult situations; ability to speak in public places; ability to lead among others.

Women are literally mesmerized by confidence.

Good looks
Even though most people including women try to downplay a man’s physical appearance, the truth is this construct is false. Most women consider a man’s physical appearance before giving him a chance. If you don’t believe it, I will prove it to you.
Have you noticed in most relationships the man is taller? Why?
Simple, physical appearance is important.
Most women will not date nor marry a man shorter than them.
Other qualities women consider are muscular build, facial appearance, and facial hair.
Women associate facial hair with masculinity, strength, and dominance.
High social standing
Belonging to a higher social class is very important to women because of their strong desire for self-preservation.
Secondly, women naturally ‘date-up’ i.e they date men have a high social and financial status because such a man is assumed to bring more value into the relationship is able to provide for them what they cant provide for themselves.
Thirdly, Men with higher social standing are believed to wield a significant amount of social influence that benefits the relationship or the women in one way or the other.

High Income
All women without exception want a man that is able to provide at all times.
This has become more relevant than ever thanks to the uncertain economic and financial realities around the world.
A man with a low income is not even expected to be in a relationship let alone a man with no source of income.
Generally, it is assumed the higher your income, the higher your perceived social status, and the higher your chances of getting a high-quality woman.
Based on these facts, there are three types of men: High quality, medium quality, and low quality.
High-quality men earn over $80k per annum. They are able to afford basic needs, luxury and are never under any financial pressure
Medium quality men earn $25-$80k per annum. They are able to afford their basic need and occasionally able to afford the luxury.
Low-quality men earn less than $25k per annum. They struggle to meet their basic needs and have no access to luxury at all

Good social network
This is a measure of a man’s influence in his social space. This depends on the number of important personalities in his social space and how much power he wields.
A man’s social network is an index social wealth/capital that many women consider before giving him a chance.
This is very important in the business world and it determines how successful a man has become or would become.

Intelligence
Most women love and want men with high functioning brain capacity. This is more relatable to students who are still in school who have to navigate several academic hurdles. It is assumed that his intellect would add value to her.
In the business world, an intelligent man is an asset to his company and his social circle because he is able to provide meaningful insights into conversations and provide relevant solutions to problems. This feeling is very reassuring for most women.

Problem-solving ability
This is a skill that is not apparent at the beginning but that man would need to prove at some point during the relationship.
Women want someone they can talk to about their personal problems. Some they can trust to provide solutions to their problems consistently.
Women by nature like to share their problems with someone they love and trust. This is why it is important to them to have a listening ear and a problem solver in a mate

Emotional stability
Empirical facts suggest that women are more emotionally expressive and labile than men. They want to the exact opposite in men.
Women associate emotional stability with masculinity. A man who is too emotionally expressive comes off as needy and frankly unattractive.
The man is expected to find a wild balance between being measurably affectionate and being overly emotional.
Women hope to find emotional stability in their men

Responsibility
This is another quality that attracts women naturally. The ability to take responsibility in a social group is one that several women find ominous in their potential suitors.
The woman scrutinizes the man's level of responsibility in his family, his social group, and at work. This is a likely predictor of what a relationship with him might be.

Leadership
This is a bit controversial but I hope to weave my words carefully to please everyone.
Who leads in a relationship? Are couples partners? Is the man the head of the family?
Well, some women think so while others don’t.
While some women think men should lead they maintain they should have a voice and a stake in every decision making.
Others outrightly reject the idea of men leading. For them, it’s a partnership. The power dynamic is 50-50.
I am not sure what your answers to those are but what thing certain is women are naturally attracted to men with leadership qualities- they love men that can take charge.
Being able to lead means being responsible, decisive, organized, informed, and proactive.
A man who comes off as weak, indecisive, and confused is everything a woman despises.

The Pastor in charge of Omega fire ministries, Apostle Johnson Sulaiman has called on the government to grant access to pastors with the gift of healing to go and pray for people sick with covid-19.


He made this call while delivering a sermon. He called on pastors and preachers who have the gift of healing to come out and prove themselves



"If you are anointed to pray for the sick, this is the time..this is the time because what is holding the world is sickness"


"So we are begging the government....this is an isolation centre, let us go there. That's the only way we can reduce this nonsense because it will increase everyday" he said


He charged the government to distribute pastors with the gift of healing to go and pray for Covid -19 patients.


It would be recalled that the national lockdown has banned all public gatherings including religious gatherings.

A church in Texas sprung a surprise to the by giving to its members instead of asking for donations.


The local Texas church led by Pastor Paul Mussacio gave out cheques to each worshipper at two services.

Members got Cheques ranging from $250 to a $1000.

A total of $125,000 was given out which was donated by only a few members as a way to empower the entire church.

The clergy gave out the donation under the following conditions:

1. Cash it within 30 days

2. Do not donate back to the church

3. Use it where it is needed the most

There is a video making the round on social media which shows a visibly angry man speaking with some 'journalists'.


In the 39 seconds video, the man expresses displeasure at how his relative is being managed in isolation.


The man identifies himself as Mr Olawunju and he alleges that his relative has not been seen by any Doctors or nurses, worse still, has not been fed.

The executive Governor of Abia state, Victor Ikpeazu has declared that covid-19 will never get to Abia state because God has been protecting Abia state.


He said:


"We have a promise...Abia is the only state that is mentioned in the Bible and we have a promise from God that none of these disease will touch God's people"

A man suspected of having coronavirus in south-eastern Kenya was beaten up by a group of youths and later died in hospital.

Local police chief Nehemiah Bitok confirmed the death to the BBC and said no arrests had been made and investigations were underway

The attack took place in the fishing village of Msambweni in Kwale county, an area on the coast popular with tourists because of its sandy, white beaches.

According to Kenya’s Daily Nation newspaper, the man was attacked on his way home at around 21:00 local time on Tuesday after he had been out drinking.

Kenya’s health ministry has so far confirmed seven cases of coronavirus.

The East African nation has imposed strict travel restrictions on foreigners, closed learning institutions and banned public gatherings.

The President of the Nigerian senate, Ahmed Lawan has called on the Nigerian government to ramp up efforts to provide testing facilities across the country as part of the necessary frame work to provide effective screening for Covid19.


With a total of 8 cases now confirmed in Nigeria, the Senate President opines that the Federal government needs to do more to make testing more available and accessible in different parts of the country.

While speaking at the plenary today, he said

“There is at the moment no testing Centre in the entire southeast” he said.

He went further to say

“In the entire north there is no testing center. Eventhough there is a testing center in Abuja, Abuja is federal capital territory”

“The entire north cannot have no testing Centre in this kind of situation “


“When you have this kind of situation, you need to take very immediate action to test and confirm” he said.

There are about 24 states in the entire north and southeast of Nigeria with no standard testing center.

It would be recalled that the Senate Also called on the federal government to shut Nigeria borders until 13 high risk countries were banned today.

Following the backlash that greeted the appointment of Senator Abbo as the Patron of Actors guild of Nigeria, The President of the Guild Emeka Rollas has come out to defend the Senator saying his appointment was justified.

It would be recalled that veteran Nollywood actors, Hilda Dokubo and Kate Henshaw criticized the appointment of Senator representating Adamawa North of Adamawa federal constituency, Ishiaku Abbo. She opined that someone with such a track record is not suited to occupy the position of a patron having been accused of assaulting a lady in a sex shop in Abuja(caught on CCTV).
Mr Rollas appeared in an interview with Plustv where he made his stance clear. He went further to say "there is a difference between morality and legality".

He said the Senator has since apologized publicly and the assaulted lady has not come out to refuse the apology.
"When we talk about morality and legality, who is holier than Senator Abbo? There is a committee that was set up in the senate to investigate Senator Abbo and it didn't find him guilty" he said
Going further;
"Is actors guild the stage for all of these? We know the stage where people who are fighting for women's rights operate...Not within the confines where actors guild is involved"
"I don't want to mention names but if we begin to dig into the personal lives of people who have mentioned....these names may not pass the morality test. But I don't want to go that way."
He posited that the Senator was very suited for the position having passed the "morality and legality test" .
When asked if Hilda Dokubo and Kate Henshaw are member are members of the Actors guild, he said he is unsure, that he would have to check since there are 2 million members

As Coronavirus continues to spread across the globe with staggering rates of infections and mortality in places like China and Italy, there seem to be a paucity of cases in Africa.

Eventhough Africa is expected to be worst hit due to prevailing low socioeconomic conditions and poor healthcare systems, reverse has been the case.

The former President and one time military head of state, Olusegun Obasanjo has sent a congratulatory message to the newly deposed Emir of Kano.

In a letter shared on Twitter by Publisher and Journalist, Dele Momodu the former President expresses his deep regrets to Mr Lamido Sanusi over his removal by the Kano state executive council.

He said “it sad because it was underserved. It is good because you have paid the price…”


The embattled and, now former Emir has since been replaced by the son of the Former Emir Kano, Ado Bayero.

Is this a sign that the Deposed Emir of Kano might have a political prospect in the future?

The emir of Kano, Mr Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has been dethroned by the Kano state government on Monday the 9th of March, 2020.

This was contained in an official press release by Kano state executive council under the chairmanship of the Executive Governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.



The statement accused the former Banker and Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria of various acts of insubordination to the Government and people of Kano state.

Governor Ganduje has had a long standing feud with the Emir based on political views and differences.

Health experts have previously warned that the virus can survive on inert surfaces long enough to infect new hosts, although the risk is believed to be lower than human-to-human contact.

But a spokesperson for the World Health Organisation (WHO) told the Telegraph on Monday that the virus can remain infectious on banknotes for several days.

The Bank of England has also acknowledged that banknotes ‘can carry bacteria or viruses’ and encourages shoppers to wash their hands after using them.

The central bank has nonetheless stopped short of disinfecting and isolating used banknotes, as its counterparts in China and South Korea have done.

A spokesperson told the newspaper: ‘The risk posed by handling a polymer note is no greater than touching any other common surface, such as handrails, doorknobs or credit cards.’

The WHO’s public disease prevention advice still focuses on hygiene and maintaining distance from other people. Germany’s central bank, the Bundesbank, last week said there is no evidence of cases of coronavirus being spread via euro banknotes.

It added that ‘the probability of contagion with a virus via a banknote is very low in comparison with other surfaces’, and that door handles, hand rails, light switches and shopping baskets are more likely to spread viruses.

It is unclear exactly how long the virus behind Covid-19 can survive without a host, but it varies widely according to the type of material and conditions like temperature and humidity.

The President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has always been under fire for incessant foreign trips either for private reasons or state assignments. Many critiques opined most of his trips were unnecessary and have been of no benefit to the economy of Nigeria while also putting pressure on the taxpayers to fund fruitless adventures of a globetrotter.


Even though the Presidency has made it clear the trips are all justified and has helped to attract foreign direct investment into the country, the criticisms have not dwindled.

I woke this morning to a message on my phone from a friend who needed to know all the facts about the latest gist about maternal health- Cryptic Pregnancy.

Apparently she heard the story of a woman who ''specialises'' in Cryptic Pregnancies.The woman does this by injecting the women with series of injections for a period of 9 months during which they experience absent menses and other symptoms of Pregnancy.
This quack also discourages them from going for any medical test claiming the Pregnancy can not be confirmed by conventional medical tests.To cap the fraudulent endeavour, she insists they must have the baby by caesaren section for no justifiable reason.

After a long conversation about the various myths, lies and misconception about this medical entity, i thought it was necessary to clear the air and educate people on this subject.

What is Cryptic Pregnancy?

This is a Pregnancy that Conventional medical testing methods(urine test,Blood test, Ultrasound) fails to detect.
In other words, the said women is having symptoms that suggest she might be pregnant but medical tests all come out negative.


Does it have other names?

This is also called Stealth Pregnancy.
