They played some different variations of 3-4-3. They defended with 5 defenders and attacked with 3 attackers, sometimes 4. Even though the defenders were exposed a few times, the system generally made the players looked better than they are, and I think we have lacked that over the years. You would think some of their players are better than what we currently have, but I disagree.

Gyökeres was a monster. He reminds me of Vardy, with smart runs and positioning. He seem to be a clinical striker also. Højlund has a lot to learn still.

ten Hag also made some of those Ajax players look better than they were, until he got to the hot seat in the EPL, and bone choked his throat.
So many things that are being said about Amorim were being said about ETH 2 years ago.

Martinez will suit carrying it forward quite well. I'm just not sure about legs to cover all that ground on the recovery. an obvious way to mitigate being exploited on his side is Ugarte starting from the left of the pivot and holding a bit lower while Martinez does the progression.
Yoro will enjoy the RCB. he has all the attributes for it, especially switch of play and speed.
Rashford fits best as a center forward in the system. Zirkzee can't play as a CF in that set up. Garnacho and Antony will be out on the wings definitely. Antony may find more joy in the inverted role as well *just saying*. Bruno fits in the two positions behind the striker or as the progressive pair in a pivot. he's played the latter position on occasion and his range is quite impressive, as is his work rate. I'd say Mount as well but he seem to have subscribed to Luke Shaw's channel.

Yeah, it would be interesting to see who gets chances out of the blue and who suddenly becomes redundant.

I think Amass will get chances. I'm interested to see how Martinez will do in a back three cuz there will be a lot of space to cover on his side especially if an attacker is put on the left wing.

On the ball Martinez is tailor made for the back 3 but off the ball he might struggle with covering the flanks.

Amass or even Antony might flourish at LWB.

From what I have read Rashford does not fit in at all unless Amorim tweaks his system.

Even Bruno does not really fit in though his situation is not as bad as Rashford’s situation.

Garnacho also is not a good fit for the system and formation but he has some interesting attributes that might make him useful in the squad.


Hojlund and Amad appear to be the most natural fit in the whole squad.

The academy is full of people that would fit stylistically very well in 3-4-2-1 but this season will be too soon for most of them and most also might not be good enough quality wise.

Amass, Kamason, Williams, Mantato as wingbacks.

Kukonki as LCB.

Lacey and Mather as narrow inverted WFs supporting the striker.

Gore as one of the 2 CMs.



This is just my guess from watching different videos giving a tactical breakdown of how he sets his teams up. I have not watched much of Sporting.

I’m scratching my head for one but it’s hard. Even Ferdy was 22/23 when he joined United.

I think the closest i can think of was Nesta at Lazio. He was around 18-19 when he became a regular. Back then Serie A was by far the top league and Lazio were a Top 4 team.

Garnacho regressed terribly last season. At the moment he’s still an impact sub at best. But with his silly mistakes and decision making I would argue he learns a bit more from the bench. I was wondering why he hardly got minutes whenever he went to the Argentine camp. Now I know.

Cubarsi was really good and was deservedly rated higher than Gernacho.

I don't think i have ever seen a player that young excel at CB for a top or high-profile club. He is not a winger, or striker so he wouldn't get all the goal and assist highlights but what he did was incredibly difficult.

I haven't really followed Ruud's coaching or understand his ability. But do you think he isn't fit for the full-time managerial role?

His CV is too brief, and we don't know if he is good or not but let him win just 4 straight games and people will start asking for him to be made the permanent manager.

Then we might find ourselves wasting 2-3 years repeating the Ole cycle. If he ends up being incompetent, fans that are emotionally attached to him as a United legend will defend him to the death like happened with Ole.

He should go elsewhere and make his name and if in 2-3 years we are still in need of a top manager, we can offer him the job then.

He started most of the games in the 2nd half of the season, making his first start just before he turned 17.
He was named player of the match in his Champions League debut which was a knockout game. Youngest player to debut in a champions league knockout game.

Doing what he did at CB at 17 I think he had a far better season than Garnacho. If Garnacho was playing CB for us and making all his silly mistakes people here would have gone to babalawo to deal with him.

I knew he would not get to December. He is actually the worst trainer we have had since Fergie. His complete inability in 3 preseasons to implement whatever he was teaching them in training is staggering.

Fair point. Better late than never sha so let us call it a decent decision, cos we were about to enter a relegation battle by next weekend.

The relegation threat is not yet over but sacking him gives us the best chance of avoiding the drop. Very sad but it is what it is.
