Lots of average players in there. The likes of rashford, Bruno fernandes, etc. Average average average players. I will not watch their matches in a long time because they don't deserve two hours of my time. I feel sorry for ten hag. A good manager, but the players are not technical enough to execute his style of play.
We have played the worst football so far this season. Do we have the worst players in the league?

I said it last week that ETH is on watch this season. Fraud watch.

I expect Garnacho and AWB to go to the bench with Sancho and Dalot starting. Sancho to start centrally and Rashford on the left. Garnacho is our best weapon off the bench.

We lost 2-1. Got one back in the 90th minute.
Lol I watched the full game live na. Immediately he did it I wanted to mention you here lol. He even saved a penalty sef. That match was emblematic of our problems at Under-21 level. We dominated the first half only to be sucker punched 0-1. We started the 2nd half on fire only for Leeds to score with their first counter 0-2. We then pressed them like brezz for the rest of the game.

Our midfielders are decent but we don’t have good strikers or wingers, so we just control the game toothlessly until our defence slips up and we concede a goal.

Even the Under-18 strikers Wheatley and our Edo son Musa have been underwhelming so far.

You misread my post there. The 2nd part you highlighted was directed at Lauren James. I have seen folks talk about how she is better than most male footballers which is not true. No matter how good she is playing against women, it wont end well if they put her up against men. Na our sisters from Enugu pocket am the other day. How will she now fare against the likes of Rodri or Rice.

As for Sarina Wiegman her credentials speak for her. If they gave her say France or Germany, she will beat Southgate for sure. But will she reach back to back world cup finals with back to back Euro wins with this same England team is the question..
Ok i thought you were referring to Wiegman. In terms of going to back-to-back world cup finals or back-to-back Euro wins, how many men have done that? Let's start from there. Or why must that be standard against which she will be judged? So is it what a man can't do a woman must do? grin

The problem i have with your stance is your assumption that because of her gender she must be an inferior men's coach. If your argument is that we don't truly know how good she is because of the quality of her opposition or that male players might struggle to submit to her authority, then a discussion can be had. It is also funny that there is pushback considering Southgate got the men's job with a CV that included finishing bottom half of the EPL in his 3 seasons as club coach and ending that by relegating his team, and then leading an England Under-21 team that had John Stones, Harry Kane, James Ward-Prowse, Jesse Lingard, Loftus-Cheek, Michael Keane, and Danny Ings to bottom position in the Under-21 Euros.

They used to say the same thing about women in certain professions like being engineers, doctors and surgeons but it doesn't always hold true. Once the job does not involve pure physical or athletic ability our natural biological advantage is reduced drastically. If you go to any university the list of the top 10 fastest or strongest students will almost certainly have only men on it but when you check top 10 best students in academics you won't see such a disparity.
A coach is a thinker and a planner for the team, she is not out there running, jumping, and kicking.

what do u think will happen if she faces a top male coach like Pep
Probably the same thing that happens when other male coaches face Pep. Nothing to do with her gender. Pep will flog anybody's head whether male, female, trans, binary.
When she took over from another man as Dutch coach they had lost 4 out of 5 matches and she immediately took them unbeaten to be Euro champions.
We don't know how good she truly is because she hasn't faced the top managers in football, but it has nothing to do with her gender cos most of the time she has faced male coaches she has smacked their gorimapa heads. grin

I'm not writing her off coaching a men's team. Intellect or not, the requirements will be very differnt coaching men compared to women. Plus she has been flogging mid male coaches coaching mid female teams.
Now you are making a good point. The difference is the quality of opposition she has been facing (both male and female) not because she is a woman like you alluded to in your initial post when you said "no matter how she good she is she won't measure up to the average man".
When she took over from a man the England team had lost 7 of their previous 11 games and she has been spanking many male coached teams in her career.
If she faces a Southgate coached team with equal quality of players she will spank him with that his empty head.

You wan dey compare men and womens football? Because she is winning on the womens stage doesn't mean she will do the same with the mens team.

This is similar to those ones that keep comparing that Reece James sister to the men. No matter how good she is, she wont measure up to the average man. Na only her fellow women she fit dey flex for
Coaching is about intellect, personality and acumen, and in that regards men don’t have the biological advantage that they have over women in sports. Plus she is surely better than the current men’s coach who is a dullard.
She won’t get the job sha but let’s not just assume that she is inferior to male coaches. She has been flogging male coaches in her current job.

Nowadays teams are more efficient and they've realized that dribbles is not an efficient method of progressing the ball

As a youth player who grew in an academy, dribbles will likely be coached out of you unless you add productivity to it otherwise your career will be like Okocha Hazard Zaha and St Maximin

I strongly disagree. Defenders are no longer mumu. All of them have seen those skills a million times and many of them can do those skills. This is not the days when every team played in a silo and you'll be seeing some skills for the first time when you meet the opposition

There are much more dribble types than before and players are all exposed to them. Even on amateur level, there are far more dribbles and dribbling styles than when I was playing actively. The amateurs of these days can twist blood out of some of the pros of those days because those pros won't have seen those skills. Go to any power league or YouTube amateur channel and see what I'm saying
I don't agree. There might be better teams defensively now but individually defenders are not as good as the 90s and 2000s for instance. Shey its all these Lindelof, TAA, and Dalot and co. Mitoma is using ordinary cutting without dropping shoulder to cause heart attack all over the place against these defenders. If you isolate a single defender against a good dribbler he must chop. What they are doing now is community defending not that the individual defenders are better. Okocha will take the souls of these modern defenders. Just that his coach will sub him off after 1st half for being unserious. grin

You just stated the reason why this modern football has more quality compared to the oldie, now we have computerised training, grin we have keepers trainer, fitness trainer, nutritionist, physiotherapist etc, and a lot of training materials. I listened to Segun Odegbami many years ago and he said if I had the opportunity to have been trained with the training facility the current players are having now, he said 'I would have been a better player'.
I was mainly addressing his second point about boring games. These days teams sometimes use tactics to neutralize each other to death leading to boring games. In terms of quality it is likely that teams are now better in terms of physical ability and tactics but they might not be better in terms of technique.

intelligent write up but still doesn't stop creativity. Tactics are supposed to bring out the best in the team.

Hazard didn't stop being Hazard because he played for Mourinho neither did Ronaldo. I don't think tactics can completely change a player who has flair and creativity, it may hamper them like Ziyech but a good coach uses tactics to his team's strengths and not to hinder it. Pep didn't hinder Robben dribbling, nor KDB playing dead balls with how strict he is.

I would say the more prevalent press tactics has called for more players with work ethic than with flair, but player like Kvara, Leao still exist and thrive. It's just more difficult with opposing teams being more organised with zonal marking and new defensive structures than they used to be 20yrs ago.
LOL the zonal marking and new defensive structures are part of the tactical inputs i mentioned. More people on the defensive block is another. Counter-pressing is another. When there is more structure and less freestyling it helps inferior players in bridging the gap with superior players.

The biggest change from the 80s is two more players in the defensive block (7 as opposed to 5) and each player covers 5km more than those days so space is at a premium. Players can still dribble and even better than before, but the space to dribble no dey again
Players can't dribble like before. Some players of past decades will dribble shege out of your life in a small circle cos they didn't need that much space to dribble. Now what most players call dribble is simple push and run. The major reason is because all those shege dribbles are coached out of most players these days at a young age. The coaches will rather ask them to pass back and build up from the back again rather than try to find creative individual solutions. The player who dribbles rather than follow tactical instructions will soon find himself on the bench.

I agree about the defensive blocks being an issue these days though and alluded to that in my earlier post. The days of a winger twisting and turning his full back's blood into thick clot are long gone.

how can tactics neutralise both team and individual creativity? You're saying tactics nullify creativity?
A good example is how many games in the earlier Women's World Cups ended 6-3, 7-1, 5-2 etc but now partly due to better tactically prepared teams we are getting lower scorelines. There are creative tactics but a lot of the tactics in football are set up to stop the opposition. Also, the focus on tactics means freelancing flair players are often overlooked for players that can follow the manager's tactics to the letter.

Instead of Maradona collecting the ball and dribbling through a maze of defenders or Michael Laudrupp throwing endless risky through passes from his own half you now have endless passing at the 1st phase until a clear opportunity opens up. Because of tactics you now rarely have fullbacks isolated against wicked wingers like before as their own winger will often drop back to give cover unlike before when your own winger will stay forward lazily leaving you to be tortured by Ryan Giggs or Marc Overmars all game.

A very good team will usually flog a mediocre or bad team but the inferior team can use tactics to reduce the difference in quality. It is far easier to devise tactics to neutralize a team than it is to devise tactics to open up a team.

COAS IN FORWARD OPERATING BASE ERENA, NIGER STATE MOTIVATING TROOPS AFTER ENCOUNTER

Following troops' encounter with insurgents in Zungeru general area of Niger state, in which gallant troops of the Nigerian Army paid the supreme price in defence of our dear country, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Nigerian Army, Lt Gen Taoreed Lagbaja arrived Mina, Niger state capital, late night Tuesday 15 August 2023 and today, immediately moved to Forward Operating Base Erena in Shiroro LGA of Niger state, where he was briefed on the current security situation by the General Officer Commanding 1 Division, Maj Gen Bamidele Alabi.

Addressing the troops soon after the brief, the COAS urged them to rally together and be more resolute in bringing the nation's adversaries to their knees and restore sanity in troubled areas. He maintained that the fight against insurgents and bandits is a just cause, in defence of Nigerians and the nation. According to the Army Chief, "Protecting lives and defending your nation are the noblest service anyone can offer. You are therefore in the noble profession of arms and must not allow your morale to dwindle. We must defeat the adversaries of our people and take back every inch of space where they are hibernating in our land", he added.

Gen Lagbaja assured the troops that he will do all within available resources to give Nigerian Army personnel and their families the best in terms of welfare. He disclosed, that this is topmost in the pillars of his Command Philosophy. He directed the immediate reinforcement of the troops with additional combat enablers to enhance their operational effectiveness.

This is not unpopular na!

As the money in the game increases, the quality really reduced. Moreover, more teams becoming system-based teams contributes largely to it.

Now, there are more boring matches compared to matches say 10-15years ago. Even two big teams produces boring matches presently compared to before. If you no take time, you fit sleep grin
They have used tactics to neutralize team creativity and individual creativity. Players now have more stamina and are more tactically responsible but technical ability and natural flair is being ironed out of the game. Even the robotic Germans of the 80s and 90s had Littbarksi, Hassler, Moller and co. If you combine all the dribbling talent in Germany right now it is not up to the talent in only Littbarksi's body.
