We have come to expect composed finishing from Martial but what impressed me most about his goal was his instinctive run across the defender thereby making it almost impossible for the defender to tackle him legally. This boy is looking really good....but there is still lots of work to be done. |

Rio was definitely world class whether you like it or not....Becks was also in the middle part of his United career. |

Fergie always has an agenda with his statements. At certain points in their United careers Schmeichel, Roy Keane, David Beckham, Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic, Ruud Van Nistelrooy were world class. There are reasons why Fergie has a soft spot for the 4 that he mentioned. |

I agree that it appears that Coogar has it in for Rooney ( same way it appears that Elamps and Bingi have a share in Rooney's salary ). However it took months and months of sustained rubbish from Rooney before he lost support on this thread. I was in support of Rooney until last year when i decided that both he and RVP had to leave for this team to move forward. Even last season if we had given Wilson a continuous run of STARTING matches he would have delivered more than RVP,Rooney and Falcao. In playing those 3 expired players we had basically no strikers last year. |

lekkie073: with the exception of cantona, no marquee signing has done utd good.... from porbosky-stam-veron-di maria-falcao.....
compare to relatively unknown players like evra vidic js park ronaldo....
the best united players are always those that joined the senior team in their teenage years....thereby giving them the opportunity to grow into the team ....scholes giggs Beckham keane ronaldo rooney
I personally have never digged the idea of utd going for established players ....they just dont suit us Stam that won 3 EPL titles and champions league in 3 yrs was a flop? Was Ruud Van Nistelroy not a marquee signing? Was Rio Ferdinand not a marquee signing? It is not only about being marquee or not marquee, it is about getting the right player in terms of talent, physicality, personality and mentality. We need players with talent who are fighters (both mind and body) not lazy mofos like Veron and Di Maria |

You can always trust Henry to go missing at crucial times That is true. Euro 2000 against Italy. I already mentioned the UEFA Final against Gala in which Hagi got a red card early in extra time. When you play about 10 finals without scoring a goal it is no fluke but a pattern. When you score goals in about 7 finals too it is no fluke but a pattern. |

Ibime: It is on record that Henry was happy with Zidanes retirement after Euro 2004. Henry felt Zidane slowed the game down and with Zidane out of the way, he would profit from rapid counterattacking footie he was used to at Arsenal. After struggling in qualifying, Domenech had to go beg Zidane to return to the fold, the rest is history.
I have watched all International tournaments since Henry's debut. He has not done anything outstanding on the International stage, he simply rode the coattails of his teammates. Christophe Dugarry did more for France than Henry, that's how unremarkable his international career was.
I would take DD over Henry in any big game, however I also consider Henry to be the most outstanding striker in EPL history. It's a hard one to call. I would choose Henry to prosecute a season and use DD for the big games if given the choice. Exact same point i made. Henry had the superior talent and over the course of a whole season he gets the nod, but if it is a single game for all the marbles it has to be DD. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by afrodoc2: 6:53pm On Sep 06, 2015 |
Nihilist: The Inter Game was a 'must win' group match if Arsenal were to proceed to the knockout stages. That's a high profile big game against the 2nd best team in Italy at the time.
Finishing 2nd, 12 points behind the Barca team that would win a double+ super cup that year does not make Madrid 'poor'. As we know Barcelona would do that to any other team in the world.
Listing Arsenal's biggest rivals during his era,one would argue that games against these opponents can be justifiably classed as 'Big Games'
Overall Arsenal record: 316 starts, 215 goals.
vs Manchester United: Games 13, Goals 8 vs Tottenham Hotspur: Games 12, Goals 5 vs Chelsea: Games 17, Goals 8. vs Liverpool: Games 15, Goals 8. Big Game totals: Games 57, Goals 29.
Infact one would argue that due to the nature of the quality of teams he faced in some of his finals (Brazil,Italy,Barca), he was facing the only teams in the world with quality to nullify Henry's goal threat
So I'm not sure how Drogba is that much better than Henry in these 'Big Games'
He got the red card against you guys in the UCL final in Moscow. In the UCL final against Bayern he gave away a penalty, which if Robben had converted, we would probably not have won. He missed a penalty in the 2006 final shootout against Egypt. then failed from the spot during the 2012 final against Zambia.
Is it scoring in a couple of FA Cup finals that makes the Drogba the better 'Big Game' Player?
I don't like the idea of demystifying a Chelsea Legend, but Henry >> Drogba in every aspect . That Madrid team full of aging stars and Pavon,Gravesen, Carlos Diogo et al was average. Inter was must win but was group stage. Henry was the better player but Henry's fecal performances against Gala and Liverpool (single-handedly losing Arsenal the title on both occasions) would stand the test of time. It is fair to compare both players. Henry also underachieved for France IMO especially when asked to lead the team |

Nihilist: What is this high profile 'No Show'?
In 2003, Henry inspired Arsenal to a 5-1 Trashing of the Inter team that beat them 3-0 only a few weeks before to progress in the UCL
In 2006, Henry went to shit on the Legacy of General Franco by scoring the goal that led Arsenal to become the 1st English team to ever win at the Bernabeu, Knocking Madrid out BTW
Or is it the game against Liverpool that their unbeaten season when he rescued arsenal from a 2-1 deficit at halftime by scoring a Hattrick?
How can Henry be labelled a High Profile no-show? Or a Flat Track Bully?
Henry has scored against 34 of the 35 teams he has faced in the Barclays Premier League. The only team he faced and not scored against were Swansea City, against whom he played 24 minutes as a substitute during his brief comeback in the 2011/12 season.
Messi hasn't scored in a World Cup or Copa America final. Would you even dare to compare Drogba to Messi on some frivolous 'Big Game Player' games.
Doctor please...I'm a hard in the paint Chelsea fan...but comparing Drogba to Henry is an insult to va va voom. Anybody can be compared to anybody bros. I have said Henry is the better player but Drogba had a better record in finals. Are you talking of the Madrid side that finished 12 points behind Barca and 2 points ahead of Osasuna? It was a relatively weak Madrid side. The Inter victory which i remember cos of the way Henry disgraced Zanetti was a group stage match if i remember correctly. You can compare 2 greats of the game. Henry was the better player but Drogba performed better in big games. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by afrodoc2: 5:42pm On Sep 06, 2015 |
Nihilist: There's nothing subjective about it jor.
Thiery Henry is the best striker to have played in the EPL era thus far.
This is the guy many people felt was robbed of a Balon D'or at least twice.
Drogba is a Legend, but Henry is already deified Henry is the better player but he had some high profile "no shows". Without thinking far i remember UEFA Cup final against 10 man Galatasaray( Hagi red carded) and the F.A Cup final against Liverpool. There was something of the flat track bully in Henry (like Berbatov LOL). Legend no doubt and he has a statue in front of the stadium but Drogba performed better in the big games IMO. In any situation other than a final match or desperation time last 10minutes e.t.c i would choose Henry but in a match for your lives i go with Drogba the ultimate overachiever. |
