If that article is true then LVG might be a bit confused. Why play an obvious 4-2-3-1 throughout preseason when you are going to play 4-3-3 in the EPL?

Also if it is going to be a 4-3-3 why play Depay in the midfield 3 when his skill set is better utilized in the attacking 3 preferably at LWF?

I hope this won't be a second successive season of wasting the entire preseason on impracticable formations and player selections?

Jones is still repeating the same mistakes from previous seasons and even i am getting tired of his stagnation.
However if Smalling is to supplant him in LVG's assessment he (Smalling) has to improve his on the ball skills cos its obvious that ability on the ball plays a big role in LVG's CB decisions ( hence the insistence on a left footed CB).

If Reus fitness was guaranteed yes. You can't discount Muller's superior fitness levels though and 2 things in which Muller is at the very top level of football...... INTELLIGENCE and WINNING MENTALITY.

Personally the 3 guys i most wanted us to sign in the last 3 or 4 years have been Modric, Bale and Reus but i have been disappointed each time.

all of them are within reach and no club has made official bids for them. wolfsburg's chief confessed this morning that no club has made any bid for kevin de bryne(what are we waiting for?) i'm also sure there are no bids on the table for reus, griezmann, etc. if we are going to lose di maria, we need another marquee signing. money is not the issue for us anymore........it's about making a statement.

LVG's interview this morning on skysports had him admitting we still need a forward with pace, creativity and goals.

I have always liked Reus, he would excel in this team and this league BARRING injury problems.
I would take him ahead of ADM,KDB griezmann or pedro.........the only conflict would be a choice between Reus and Muller.

LVG talks too much and we have always known he is a bit unstable ( maybe more than a bit). Lets hope his tactical acumen surpasses his psychological immaturity

I have not drawn conclusions from the result, we all know its a friendly. what I have stated were observations but I don't know why everyone is quick to remind us that it was the same on last season's friendlies
firstly, LvG has a year experience in the EPL along his signings from last term - unless you want to tell me it doesn't mean nothing
secondly, no two seasons are the same
thirdly, both teams played to win the game so I don't know why people stress a deserved win is unimportant. will you prefer we play poorly & lose?
thirdly, barca is a formidable opposition without Messi but a super team with Messi #fact. take out Messi & drop him into Chelshit, Arsenal or United they become super teams. its the edge Madrid also get with CR & Bayern also get from Robben albeit to a lesser degree.
we could get the edge from Rooney but that is story for another day.
lastly, the performance was up there & the combinations in small patches of the field, especially Darmian-Mata-Depay, Shaw-Schneiderlin-Young was exciting.

I was responding to your statement that Barca without Messi is just there.

First of all any team that has the best player in the world taken off its lineup would suffer from it be it Barca with Messi, Real with C.Ronaldo or Brazil with Pele.
However this Barca team without Messi still has possibly 2 out of the 7 best players in the world i dont think its accurate to say they 'just there' especially after a preseason game. 7 to 8 of their players would walk into our starting lineup at this moment.

This was just preseason. U can't use it to judge what would happen in a competitive game. We saw how we beat all comers last preseason but fell at the first hurdle against Swansea.
We should be more concerned about chemistry,form n fitness rather than just the results cos no matter how much confidence we gain from flogging all these teams now it all goes out the window if Spurs smashes us in week 1

I do not blame LVG for this di maria issue. ADM has great quality but has always been inconsistent over the course of a league season . Also if there ever was a player who was the antithesis of LVG'S philosophy it is di maria with his occasional idiotic out of control runs.
I would be happy if we kept him for a 2nd make or break 2nd season but i am equally happy if we sold him and got quality replacement.

he's actually played a 4-2-3-1. from my observations, if he's going to revert to a 4-3-3 later, it will be a double pivot variation.

he's stated that the first team that will play 60 mins against Barca will likely be the team he starts the season with. based on this we can hopefully get a clearer picture of what's up his sleeve.

oh ok, i watched highlights. If it is 4-2-3-1 i hope the players master it and LVG sticks to it.

I don't think he's in the same position like he was last season, he had little choice.
remember the 3-5-2 did very well in preseason, so probably that wad the reason he persisted a little longer with it than was necessary.

Most analysts are predicting 4-3-3 formation for the season but we have played 4-4-2 in our 2 preseason matches.

If we are going to play 4-3-3 why not start from the early part of preseason?
Or does he intend to persist with 4-4-2 in the EPL?

I think the formation we employ this season would be even more important than any further additions to the present squad.
LVG has to utilize a system that is simple and effective early on rather than spend preseason and the first 4 months of the season experimenting on nonviable options.

There are many aspects to LVG's so called "philosophy".

1) The players believe and obey him in all things and do things his way.

2) The players play a style that gives the team the best balance and results rather than improve individual stats.

3) The players play with cohesion, patience and aim to control the tempo of the game.

Zlatan went against Article 1 at Ajax, Rivaldo went against Article 2 at Barca, and i suspect Di Maria has gone against Article 3 at United.

Yeah. while its normal to vary tactics n formation from time to time it is important to have a primary formation that works most of the time.
The reasonable options are 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1, 4-4-2.
