What club is that? And whoever said poetry performed on stage is spoken word? Spoken word is just rap without beats to me. Poems should be performed, but its beauty lioes in the hidden messages and metaphors when read.
Literature › Never Seek Poetry by afroxyz(op): 8:15am On Nov 29, 2012
Never seek poetry,
She seeks you,
Then leads you to the path
Like ants on a sugar trail.

She is heaven,
That cannot be reached.
She is hell,
That must be feared.

Yet she abides
everywhere,
Visible,
like the luminesence
Of fire flies lighting up,
The muddy river bank.

She is the sea
between man and gods,
The cloud of dawn,
that fastened noose of noon
The language of the spirits,
Sang aloud in whispers

Never seek poetry
Unless your verses
are strung like pearls,
And jewels are wasted,
On the plains
of your utterances.

Never seek poetry,
Unless you are a poet
She would be unattractive
Like a hippo in a corset

Literature › Perfect African Story by afroxyz(op): 9:51am On Nov 27, 2012
In the paint of gloom
With the brush strokes of doom
With a face of crime
And shoes hasty to strife.

You paint a portrait of me,
With no mouth to speak.

I carry a bag of rituals
To appease the gods of cannibals.
I cover my unclothedness,
With ethnic garments

I bear the eye of the mystics,
And the voice of a tribalist
I am unrefined,
That why I need a hand

You accuse in your books,
I look, bemused.

To build my toilets,
And till my lands
I depend on aid
For I am wild, untamed

East-west scavengers,
Spill the blood of trees,
Poison the roots of children,
Playing war games with m-16s

You have judged,
Should I feel begrudged?

For fame and glory,
Your pens spill gory,
In the name of a story,
The 'perfect' African story.

Literature › At The Campus Gates by afroxyz(op): 10:40am On Nov 24, 2012
Last saturday,
I passed through campus,
Amused,
By my foolishness.

Reminiscing,
On relationships,
That stood,
on broomsticks

Lofty dreams,
Strung with cobwebs,
Where reality,
is scene of my fiction.

Clothes mattered,
Phones, status symbols
Trying to impress
With money not earned.

The alcohol, and smoke
Behind closed doors,
Where only the walls
Understand our language.

The girls who took,
Looks over books
The guys who took,
Boobs over cooks.

But our calabash of dreams
fetch not of reality's streams
Flowing from life's hills
Outside our campus gates

Yeah, I have watched some spoken poetry performances and I enjoyed it. Its beauty is in the stage, cos it uses its tongue as a pen.
Literature › Spoken Word Vs Poetry by afroxyz(op): 11:16pm On Nov 22, 2012
They say,
Spoken word is poetry.
I say,
Try coke and pepsi

For one lives for the stage,
Rhythms and flowetry,
The other lives in the page,
Methaphors and imagery.

They say,
Spoken word is poetry,
I say,
A sea is not its tributary.

One is direct and vivid,
talkative and expressive.
The other is secretive,
Says more with few words.

They say,
Spoken word is poetry,
I say,
Use omelettes to cook egusi.

One is superficial and flashy
Seeking to capture your eyes.
The other is an endless abyss
An emptiness that fills the heart

They say
spoken word is poetry,
I say,
Compare silk and cotton.

One is a bride,
Without jewels
The other a maiden,
With a string of pearls.

They say,
Spoken word is poetry
I say,
Marriage is not wedding

For one,
The tongue is a pen,
For the other
The pen is also the tongue

They say,
Spoken word is poetry.
I say,
A War song is not music

ehie: i have to pst TS eLLIOT'S hOLLOW mEN

Mistah Kurtz -- he dead.

A penny for the Old Guy

I

We are the hollow men
We are the stuffed men
Leaning together
Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
Our dried voices, when
We whisper together
Are quiet and meaningless
As wind in dry grass
Or rats' feet over broken glass
In our dry cellar

Shape without form, shade without colour,
Paralysed force, gesture without motion;

Those who have crossed
With direct eyes, to death's other Kingdom
Remember us -- if at all -- not as lost
Violent souls, but only
As the hollow men
The stuffed men.
Like seriously in a thread for works by African poets?
Literature › The Masked Tongue by afroxyz(op): 9:46pm On Nov 18, 2012
Insensitive,
You say I am.
How can it be?
You can't connect to my heart

Out of your tipped nose,
Your utterances drop.
Like hot akara
From mama bisi's pot

Like water,
In broken clay pots,
Your words, melt
Like ice in the sun

You have masked,
The face of your tongue,
Like a damask,
On a leprous corpse

Tasteless,
Are your words,
Void of garnishing
Of proverbs and metaphors

Like a bride without pearls,
A maiden without jewels,
Your utterances walk,
Raggedly, without finesse.

In form and movement,
You look like my brother.
Yet in speech and accent,
You sound like another.

Waste you are,
Like cow dung.
'Cos you conspired (with strangers)
To poison our mother tongue.

Now, i'm not sayin he's not upright, but i'm cynical when it comes to them all!

I think you should do the shutting up and put your brain in order. Did he not include himself in the list? If someone speaks the truth Nigerians complain, then the next thing you cry out to God for redemption. Your kind are like the jews who murdered Jesus while still praying to God to send a messiah

Michky: Some people even go mad from smoking this shiit. Everyone saying its good on this thread must be trying to justify their helpless addiction. There's a school built by lagos state for such substance addicts. Many of its inmates are kids from well to do homes. Their families took them there as a last resort. Mehn, you need to see what this weed is doing to good homes. Yall should look for that school and get treated now abeg!
Sharrap! Who told you that its weed that made them mad? Theu won't tell you that its cocaine. That's what most of these rich kids take

SELFWORTH: You can tell by most of the responses here that none of you have lived with an addict (I.e someone who is dependent on something). It can destroy a whole family talk less of a marriage.

Taking it for leisure or anything else is like playing with fire. How many doctors will prescribe weed for treatment of an ailment . If you are stupid enough to agree to that you should be prescribed weeds please first ask the doctor whether he himself will use it if roles were reversed.

Not everything we desire is good for us. My advice is to seek treatment with your husband as a family. There are rough roads in every marriage . This is your cross bear it with him but don't let it drag you down. Unless an addict wants to quit, there is little you can do to help them. They may end up destroying themselves but don't let them destroy u or your family unit.
How would it destroy his life? Have U̶̲̥̅̊ heard of anyone who smoked weed and sold his house and properties like coke addicts do? Abeg talk another thing jare

Loveaflame: Some people can be so strange when it comes to real issues.Put the church aside,Africans believe in the supernatural. That is for real.We were and still many are idol worhippers by nature. You can't deny the facts that people still worship these gods or goddesses today.Except you are living on another planet. How do you explain ritual killings for money?Even in the developed world a lot of mysterious things go on there also.If you don't believe in the supernatural, then do this,go to your father's village and destroy their village shrine secretly and wait for the repercussion.Evil spirits are real.I have seen them many times. We should stop deceiving ourselves with the socalled Western Education we have been brainwashed with.No fear of God again in the nation. No wonder someone said we should let our leaders swear with Ogun(god of iron) or Sango(god of thunder),than with Bible or Quran. They will sit tight because they fear those ones than God.
So the Europeans that you borrowed christianity from nevet at one time worshipped idols? Idol worshippers by nature my ass!!

Bodyguards would have barricaded,
And the blood would still be an issue.
Offerings bowls would be passed around,
To feed the multitude.
To Jerusalem, a convoy of cars,
He would need- A grand entrance
For Pilate, an army of lawyers,
To mount defence.
The woman in Samaria would continually thirst,
Because he has ethnic preference.
The merchants in church would bring returns.
He would build universities his members can't afford.
In his 'holiness', he won't wash dirty feet,
For his reverence, he won't sleep in the streets.
Miracles would be public spectacles,
Lazarus would have paid a handful.
The blind man would lean on his staff,
Waiting for the angel to stir the water.
He would have sold his soul to the devil,
for the riches of the world.
He would send the 'holy ghost' fire,
To cremeate judas,
The cup of life would have passed over,
And he would be another jonah.
He would have used the courts,
To block the pains of the cross.
Asking not forgiveness,
for the mob that cursed.
he would never have died like a thief,
To bring humanity everlasting relief
Because jesus was not christian.

Before you start throwing tantrums, this is a poem juxtaposing the life of Jesus and the modern day christian.
