aryzgreat: Wia did ds nematode escape from? So Achebe did not win nobel award bc according to u, he spew hate and bile against Nigeria? So nobel is a Nigerian award? Before Achebe wrote "there was a country" yorubas never attcked him, but they turned vernomous after Achebe wrote d blunt truth about Awo-ole. SMH for tribalistic scums called yoruba! To hell with all of u and ur thin god awo-ole, he was a murderer and should be tried post humously in Hague for war crime against women and children of Biafra! mtcheeeeeeeew!
What truth? Why didn't he mention how the igbos taunted the Hausas when the saraduna was killed which led to the attack on Igbos? Why didn't he mention how Leopold Senghor refused to support the Biafra cause 'cos of how Ojukwu employed the media propaganda? Why did he not mention how Okigbo was running arms from birmingham to Nigeria? Why did he not mention how Azikiwe stayed outside the country for months prior to the coup even though the nation was hosting the commowealth conference? Like most people you don't care to verify information. So far it is Achebe that wrote it, then its true. Sheeple
Achebe died and Nigeria has been on d news for good thing, when last wass any good thing said about nigeria?

OP I forever thank you for your post. I had an argument with a friend based on what you discussed not far long. As far as I am concerned Soyinka is the true Nigeria. Even after being imprisoned by the FG for trying to broker peace during the Biafran, he still served by forming the FRSC and accepted the award. He had nothing to lose in that war yet he risked his life. Okigbo fought for what he believed in and died for it. But what did Achebe do? Stay from his foreign base and spew hate and bile. That is why he never won the Nobel award. He was a great man in the literary circle, but he could not transcend his tribal notions. That is why his prodigee Chiamanda could have the audacity to say "I'm Igbo and African". She like her mentor did not believe in Nigeria. We don't need such people in our trying moments like this

1stCitizen: The interviewers are completely immature and unprofessional.

They knew the guy did not know the answer and kept over-flogging the issue. He did not know it, Simple! That's part our failures as a society. I am pretty sure GEJ does not know the address of Nigeria's web portal.

Even after he answered incorrectly, the lady in their midst went further to repeat the wrong answer with sarcasm. Such a bunch of unprofessional idiots.
I have seen many interviews done on BBC, CNN, RT etc where the people being interviewed show some deficiency in knowledge...... they simply move on to the next question. When shall we learn?
Shut ur bloody trap! Its people like you who drag this country in mediocrity. If the system was right would such people pop out in leadership positions? Simple website he does not know. I doubt if he knows his office address. Wait! Letz ask his oga @ the top

jimcaddy: I really wonder if some people watched the game ysterday or wat they do is to hate bcause its Man Utd. United rily controlled d game caus Fergie got his tactics spot on. He knew a draw wuld send us thru, dat explains why rooney and chicharito were sat on d bench. Poor officiating from the turkish ref. He shld have used his fucking discretion to give nani a yellow just for the sake of this big match. Didn't De Jong get a yellow for a red card tackle on xabi alonso at the world cup? Just for the fucking sake of the match turkish ref. That decision ruined the tactics and gave madrid an extra edge. Even if madrid were still goin to beat us, at least we wuld not have gone down like dis without a fight. But we live to fight anoda day. Am glad UEFA has made their moni for pairing a game like dis at this stage. We still have two trophies to play for, so it wuldnt be a bad season afterall.
How did Man U̶̲̥̅̊ control the game? You were out played in possession, shots on targets and even corner kicks. Perhaps you watched the match on a black and white television set

My problem with all these folks with a foreign degree is that they still have the Naija mentality: 'Looking for a job. Can't you create one? Apart from your foreign degree what else can you offer. It beats me that with all the 'exposure' you get abroad, a foreign degree holder can't create a job, meanwhile they are people do it here in Nigeria. You think the country owes you something because of your foreign accent? Abeg park well. These folks are so quick to point out how the educational system is better, yet they still 'look' fo jobs. Get off your high horse and get something started. Shiekina

Okpu-achi
In the tiny city of london
The land of trading soujourners
Neighours to female husbands
And dancing warriors
You stand on your throne
At the town centre

Okpu-Achi
Like a baby to mama's nipple
Kindred suck from your roots
Even the far-travelled son
Lost in the city's belly
May but find his way home
To you. To rest

Okpu-Achi
Your shoulders rest the eagle
Your fingers caress the heavens
In recesses of your shade
Old flames kiss and play
Leaving twigs of love nests
Built under your bosom.

You stand tall, unbent
But for how long?
Would you tarry this great flood
Of the Ishimokoto river
That deafens the rantings of Ikoro
How long, before Abriba falls?

Your statement is misleading. The igbo is not a patrilineal society. Check your facts. However good work on one of Africa's great wordsmith

It is normal for people to respond the way you guys are doing, but any student of culture would understand the intrcacies in the act. The boy is standing in place for his grandfather who never had a white wedding. As such, the boy is merely a stand-in person for the grandfather to complete the ritual (for whatever purpose not explained). It can be likened for a relative standing in for someone getting married. The boy is not 'married' persay to the woman.

And how do you help him out when he is under the stress of providing for you and the future of the kids? And about the igbo part? Please don't expose your ignorance. Women are strong actors in igbo society. Study the Ohafia and Afikpo groups who have a strong female inheritance system. And where were the 'educated' yoruba ladies when the Igbo women organised the Aba women's riot as far back as 1929? Stick to the question and leave your tribal sentiments in your bedroom!

Ishi you are a very wonderful writer. I laughed all through, but your imagery was also powerful
" The journey back in deep silence is a colourless blur of passing trees and bushes, mud houses, gliding tar black earth and the warmth of Honourable's hand. Each mile we passed brought me closer and closer to the place I had reluctantly made my home. I tried to run from The Place, but somehow, mischief always chased me back, howling like a frightened cat. "
Keep it up.

Poems For Review › Re: I Need A Black Jesus by afroxyz(op): 3:33pm On Feb 01, 2013
I have read comments arguing for and against the poem. Some arguments were based on critical analyses, most on sentiments. The question I ask everyone is did Jesus bring any religion? No. All religions are ways through which diffrent societies sought to communicate with the supernatural. Just as our languages are diffrent, so are our social experiences and reaction to these experiences based on our perceptions. God exists, but people communicate with him in diffrent ways. Religion like other social phenomena evolves. Again I pose another question: how would those that existed before the coming of Jesus be judged? God is bigger than the mental contraptions we are putting up. We are lockikng God behind the bars of religion and that way we can't feel his awesomeness. The poem is talking about adopting our own solutions since it is US that experience these peculiar problems. How come we were doing better before these foreign adoptions? Have they served us more profitably? Hence the third question: look around and tell me any society that developed on foreign culture and religion. I rest my cae. To those who feel that God is the exclusive right of their religion (which every religion claims), sorry. Its much bigger than you. Just as there are diffrent races, but we are all human beings, we mourn, celerbrate birth, have urge for sex and defecate et al, so are diffrent religions which have a common feature of L♥√, unity, brotherhood, prayer and fasting, killing of the ego or lesser self. Hence one God.

Poems For Review › I Need A Black Jesus by afroxyz(op): 10:45pm On Jan 28, 2013
I need a black Jesus
Someone like me
Who speaks my language
And knows what I feel

Not the blond hair, blue eyes
But wolly hair, brown eyes
Someone who comes from within
Not from across the sea

Not the artistic creation
Brought to life
By micheal-angelo's brush
And the catholic pope

A black Jesus
Who knows how to be African
Understand my mother tongue
Eats yam and kolanut.

He would not despise my skin
Or castigate my kin
Telling me I'm ham's descendant
That's I'm the white's servant

A black jesus
Who our leaders would revere
And dare not swear an oath
Unless prepared

Yes he would resurrect
With me and my spirit
We would walk the seas together
And feed the ignorant multitude

Not the one that has created rift
And torn my brothers apart
His name on the slave ship
And endorsed the apartheid

Black Jesus, where are you?
Unsettle my reality
Tell me the devil wears white
'Cos he is an angel

We need a black Jesus
To free us from this rot
Not the one packaged and sold to us
And shares birthday with the sun god

Literature › Beyond The Rainbow by afroxyz(op): 7:42pm On Jan 25, 2013
There resides no gold
But the wizard of Oz
Conjuring altered egos
Over the rainbow.

Where monarch butterflies,
Skid on umbrellas of petals
In well manicured gardens
Fertilized by ash.

Swiped lives,
Like touch screens
Awake in a trance
Slaving for the system.

Over the rainbows,
Is where we find democracy
Red-dressed, arm-wrestled
By corporate machines.

The butterfly of morality,
Probes not its proboscis
On the petals of politics
Or suck of its nectar.

Over the rainbow.
Is where we locked God
Behind the bars of religion
Sealed in dogmatic boxes.

Society is pricked
With ideological needles
Our reactions, our norms
Forged in philosophical labs

Over the rainbow,
Beauty is the mirror's customer
Sanity in my insanity
'Cos a big-brother defines my reality

Over the rainbow lies heaven,
Nirvana of our fantasies
But fantasies are treasures
Beyond the rainbows

You have built walls
Round your fortress
Maginot lines of defense
To shield your opulence.

You laugh at them.
The poor and down-stricken.
Nothing but tools to be used
Then dumped like tissues.

They chant free songs,
Through bars and wires
Their cries and pain,
Tear no holes in your skin

You soothe their wounds,
With religion and faith.
Trapping their thoughts
In hopeful hopelessness.

Severing their chains,
With ethnic jingos.
Mis-educating with education
Choreographed reality tv

They bow their heads,
But their anger stands.
Waiting for the tunes
From the flutes of anomie

The laws you built
Are sand castles at shore
The ocean of revolution
Laughs at you

Dark shadows lurk
By your bedside
Bastards orphaned by
The light you killed

Dance steps of rage
Held bound in broken cages
Reflections of their true self
Come alive in broken mirrors

Your power is an umbrella
To dark hurricanes fermenting afar.
Like the ants that gather grain.
In anticipation of the rain.

For pay day shall come
When the people's anger
Shall be cashed and withdrawn
To buy your lives.

Soldiers would go on strike,
The police would take to flight
Even justice would be blind
When sorrow imprisons your smile

-It is just a matter of time.
