TheBookWorm: Ibadan's steady decline can be traced to Lagos success. The economic vacuum that is Lagos has sucked the life out of many cities in the South-West.

It is like the New York City factor. New York City is such a prominent city in the New York state, but other areas of New York like upstate New York have lost population and economic power.
Elimination of the regional administration that built it sucked the life out of it because regardless of Lagos as the most developed part of Nigeria, Ibadan was making progress and scoring many first in Nigeria and Africa, Ibadan was in a class of it's own. It was not even the commercial capital in the SW, it was the political capital hence siting nearly all the industrial estates in Lagos by the Western Regional Government..

Independence and the sad effect of lousy federal system induced policies and manifested problems caused migration to Lagos.

dangiwa09: You mean Ironsi caused all the destruction and pillage in Nigeria in just 6 months . He must be a magician or you need to go study Nigeria's History at least from 1914
Your sense of logic, history and government policies sucks...

We all thrived significantly during regional administration until that single act by Ironsi which killed progress in every corner of Nigeria.

In less than a decade under the old Western region, the SW entered into our history books the many firsts in Nigeria, in West Africa and Africa.

The industrial estates still responsible for a major chink of our non oil economy was established in that same era...

1914 has nothing to do with anything because 1914 or not, we thrived and made progress even before independence.

Afam4eva: I condemned the governor of Abia state when he did something relative. You can check my post history. The reason why Fashola's own was more pronounced is because he's the governor of the most important state in Nigeria. I condemned Fashola's action from a constitutionally point of view and not from a tribal prism like a lot of people did and i will continue to condemn any state governor that carries out similar actions because it's not in tandem with the laws of the land.
Must be your own made up constitution and not the Nigerian constitution.

Why I'm I even bothering with this zero credibility tribal and conflict of interest mod?

Ibadan was a first class city in the making, but Nigeria as a country derailed Ibadan and the SW in general..

You are too dumb to figure out that you can not drink your oil, you have to sell to sustain your miserable life and existence.

You are too dumb to figure out that even Lagos becomes an oil producing state next year..

You are you dumb to figure out that building this energy hub with deep seaport, refineries and LNG far aware from your violent and miserable creeks is another writing on the wall stating your lack of importance and irrelevancy..

talktimi: smh... Please figure out who sets and regulates the policies & curricular of all educational institutions in Nigeria. If the ministry should agree then fine if not on to the next policy. I have always been an advocate of regional integration but policies must be enforced in a legal way. Ok
And the federal government dictates curriculum and teaching methods in elementary school right?

I know people in your side of the country think the FG is the beginning and the end of life and you can not breath without the federal government's help and say so, but we don't roll like that on our side, we do what's best for us.

FCUKKK your FG..

Flood in Uyo prompts mockery of Gov Akpabio’s ‘uncommon transformation’ slogan

Heavy flooding caused by torrential rainfall around the city of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, last week fired up public anger against the administration of Governor Godswill Akpabio, with most residents trapped within the chaotic traffic in the city publicly making jest of the governor’s ‘uncommon transformation’ slogan

Mr. Akpabio, the two-term governor of Akwa Ibom State, is well known for praising self as the man behind ‘the uncommon transformation’, a boastful reference to his administration’s modest effort at building modern infrastructures like roads, bridges, a few public buildings for government use as offices and a cinema within the state capital.

But the curse of heavy rain these days is pushing the people to show just how low they think of Gov Akpabio’s claims.

During the heavy rainfall people in Uyo were busy taking photos of a city ravaged by flood and posting them along with their satirical comments on facebook and other social networking sites.

[b]
Princess Etim, a female journalist residing in Uyo is one of the few who were quick to post on her facebook page, a photo of the flood on Atiku Abubakar Avenue, Uyo. Etim took the photograph with her BlackBerry Smartphone, and mockingly tagged it as ‘Uncommon Atiku River’.

Commentators – most of them journalists living in Uyo – who responded to the facebook post, were quick to catch the joke and also used the word ‘uncommon’ to poke fun at Gov Akpabio’s most familiar phrase.

“The flood on Atiku Abubakar Avenue not bigger than uncommon IBB River,” says Helen John, whose facebook profile indicates she is an assistant editor with the Akwa Ibom State-owned The Pioneer newspaper.

“The one at Nsikak Edouk (avenue) is uncommon too, but (it is) the largest river in Africa,” writes Etorobong Ekpo who works as a principal reporter with a local private newspaper known as Quest.

The paper is said to be owned by a journalist-turned politician who currently serves as a chairman of a local government council in Akwa Ibom State.

A post from David Augustine, the editor-in-chief of Weekly Insight, reads: “ ‘After just three minutes of rain in Uyo, our drainage system (the best in Africa) would do the magic and it will be so dry, you would think it never rained’ Who said this and to whom and when….?”

And another post reads: “Akwa Ibom is working jare…you guys aren’t seen nothing yet…uncommon rain, uncommon flood… ado ok!”

Gov Akpabio is widely celebrated in the local media and the Peoples Democratic Party for “governing Akwa Ibom State well”.

But residents say beyond the facade, the poverty and unemployment rate in the state remained among the highest in the country.

Local contractors are routinely ignored for multinationals in the execution of infrastructural projects, and residents complain of huge capital flights from the state.

The largest employer of labour in the state remain the civil service which is already overstaffed.

Most state-owned industries have closed shop and the state is not known to have attracted any substantial investment in spite of Governor Akpabio’s several overseas trip in search of foreign investors.

Anyway, the south west has other languages aside Yoruba. What about Egun speakers found in Lagos and Ogun, how about the Ijaw spoken in ondo state?. Will you now impose Yoruba on them?.
What a senseless idea.

Fitzy4real: A half-baked idea...

Have they considered

1.) The non-yoruba's in public schools or would the language be imposed on them.
2.) How their students will write exams such as common entrance, WAEC, NECO, JAMB etc...
3.) South-westerners in living other geo-political zones of the federation or would they be left behind.

It is a good idea trying to preserve our languages but there are other more important issues facing the South west to be dealt with
Ride on Mr analyzer.

ILIDEFI: Many Yoruba graduates are terrible in English (both in their accents and d use of verbs), despite being taught in schools with English language. Can somebody now imagine how it would b in a couple of years time if dis new plan is implemented?
Let's face facts, dis move is anti-Nigerian. How would a child from another region whose parents come to settle down in d southwest for wateva reason, b expected to cope wen enrolled in primary schools in d southwest, in d event of implementation of dis plan? Are we saying dat ppl must b restricted to their regions? Yorubas, think for Nigeria, for once.
ILIDEFI: I strongly detest Eko Ile and his brother Eko Atlantic. Typical Yoruba bigots they both are. They've never been outside the south west but think they know anytin abt Nigeria.
To start wit, Lagos is not Yoruba land. Lagos was Nigeria's capital city, and today it represents Nigeria as a whole. D beauty of Lagos today is because it wz built by Nigeria, not by Southwesterners, who lack a sense of beauty. Eko Ile and co, how many other SW cities are like Lagos? It's just like northerners coming to boast about Abj cos it's in d north.
Granted dat Onitsha may be dirty cos of the large population of traders and the enormous trading activities going on there, but you guys should visit Enugu and Owerri. Are they in any way less developed than Ibadan and Abeokuta etc? The answer is no.
Go to villages in d East and see development. Men hustle and develop their communities. Fine houses are built, electricity is brought into communities, even roads are tarred by indigenes of various communities, unlike your SW ppl that depend on government to do everything for them.
You guys should change that dirty mindset you have about Igbos, which only portray jealousy. No other tribe in Nigeria wud'v been standing this tall like Igbos, if they faced the civil war, and the ensuing marginalization that Igbos have faced for many decades now. Igbos are still d best in Nigeria, and the transformation you all have been craving for will only come in Nigeria wen an Igbo man ascends the presidency. Mark my words.
At least we know what tribal platform you are operating from so no need to take village jokers like you seriously...

Tstark: This is NOT a good idea, yoruba people barely know how to speak English as it is, not this will only make it harder for them
Not knowing how to speak English is not the start and end of everything. South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore don't speak English and they teach in their local languages, but see where they are today.

1. Calculus
2. Exponential
3. Logarithm
4. Surd
5. Indices
6. Latitude and Longitude
(#200 recharge card).

@topic. Its a very good initiative, but they must involve all categories of citizen to be a success; Traditional council, Religion leaders, student bodies, Legal practitioners, teachers, NGO.

Please must we tribalize everything? I reason with Ngwakwe about exempting Lagos. Its because of the heterogenous nature of the residents which has been aiding the development of Lagos state. On the other hand, if Lagos is exempted, it will look as if we Yoruba had sold our inherittance. If implemented, other tribe will have no choice than to dance to the tone of the music.

God bless Yorubaland, God bless Nigeria
Look at all the developed and industrialized nations, they teach and study in their local languages. Forcing students to first learn English and many subs like English literature, you are in effect laying learning roadblocks and barriers.

The only challenge I see here is the fact that we have more than one Language to deal with.. but *wink*wink* this is all about DAWN.
