I can get behind this movement if the exception clause in the abolishment of the death penalty is removed. Making exceptions is a stupid slippery slope that then allows argument for any number of arbitrary exceptions that will take us back to where we are. Abolish the death penalty once and for all, and I'll get behind this movement. Everything else is a pretty reasonable ask. 1 Like 1 Share |

rosebowl01:You're clearly the one who is arrogant here, by acting like #15,000 is beneath you. But you're right about the internet being blind...blind to arrogant pricks like you who believe they should be worshipped and respected on the basis of their material wealth, not on the wealth of their moral characters. I'm happy the egalitarian nature of the internet gives a lot of grief to the morally bankrupt such as your kind. Bottom line is; if you want to fix your bush roaming people’s problem, why don’t you just set up ranches in your states in the North of Nigeria? Why are you hellbent on seizing southern lands that are already much smaller and denser? Why do you want to mix your poverty infested people and culture with people that you detest?Everybody is my people. From the relentless bush roamers, to my awesomely industrious brothers and sisters from the east, to my accommodating siblings from the west, to my savvy northern comrades, to my resilient southern family. They are all beautiful, I love them all, and detest no one. On the other hand, your unfortunate choice of words clearly shows who it is that is doing the detesting. That said, I find it rather interesting that you keep projecting your own characteristics on me. First, you called me arrogant, when your behaviour (not wanting to mix with me for nothing more than your assessment that we have different backgrounds) clearly shows you to be the arrogant one. Next, you accused me of detesting southerners when the sort of language you used to describe herders clearly shows you to be the one filled with hate and detestation. I wonder what else there is to you which you've projected on me. Poverty, perhaps? Not that poverty is a crime. You see, I'd gladly mix with you, irrespective of your financial status. You, on the other hand, think you shouldn't mix with people when they're poor. What does that say about your moral character? By the way, go use your 15k life savings to buy more gworo for your family.Even though I am presently inclined to agreeing with you that buying gworo for my family is a more worthy investment choice, my offer still stands if you can show that I've ever advocated for war. Heck, since #15,000 is beneath you, I'll raise the stake to #15,001. Oya, get searching... |

MetaPhysical:You've obviously developed an uncanny ability to perceive and differentiate between real and artificial terrorism. Good for you! As for me, I'm not that perceptive. All I see are lots of people suffering, from north to South and from east to west. I'm asking you, myself and the larger society what can be done to reduce these sufferings. The solution seems obvious to me, and it doesn't involve the vilification of any particular ethnic group. I can elaborate more on my proposition if it interests you. I hope it does. If not, good luck with your categorisations of types of terrorism. |

OdumegwuOjukwu: No, I won't give it another try. Your immunity to 'taqiyya' has completely disarmed me. You win!!! In an "unrelated" note, I am sure the irony of this whole situation escapes you, but because I am nice, I will point it out as follows. 1) You've probably assumed I am Muslim 2) You also assume that lying to 'infidels' (or otherwise taqiyya) is one of the core tenets of my belief system. 3) As a result, rather than engage with the substance of my arguments, you have denied me the validity of my answers by tagging them with 'taqiyya' (ill intent, that is to say). This is exactly the type inconsistency your brand of sociology leads to. Anyway, 'taqiyya'...so you've won. Hurrah!!! 1 Like |

nwanyionitsha: Instead of engaging with the case I made for empathy towards your fellow humans, you thought it would be easier to generalise me into a group of people you find disagreeable on the internet, and to which I definitely don't belong; since that would give you the pretext to dismiss the validity of my argument using ad hominems. I hope there's a lesson to be learned in the dangers of generalisations? Anyway, no apology, no retraction and definitely no #15,000 for you! |

OdumegwuOjukwu:Do you not see that by already assuming the worst of Fulani herdsmen as a group, you are invariably denying them the voice to speak for themselves? How can you, on the one hand, claim they are dangerous people, then on the other, expect them to answer for themselves? You've already made your conclusions and constricted yourself to view whatever they say or do with suspicion. What difference would it then make for them to "answer for themselves"? Give that a thought!!! |

OdumegwuOjukwu:"Anecdotal evidence" is an oxymoron when making arguments with inherent statistical properties; for example, using your experience with a few bad Fulanis to conclude that all Fulanis are bad. You're committing the same type of fallacy some white people make when they assume most Nigerians are bad people because they've had a few bad encounters with Nigerian mails. P.S. I wonder if it matters whether I am Fulani or not. |

OdumegwuOjukwu:Read the article I shared again. It is explicitly stated that arrests were made. Grazing route = Grazing Reserve = Cattle Colonies = Government Sponsored Ranching = LTP = Ruga = 'Stealing' native land for Fulani = Populating Nigeria with fulanis for insidious purpose.Like I said, I am not going to engage your conspiracy theories It was insensitive putting animal before man. Exactly what the president have been doing. I'm glad you realize the mistake. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do about killing animal for the benefit of man and gods. Their fate is sealed. Perhaps we could do it humanely at best. And by animal, I include fish, and chicken as I don't favour red meat.I don't agree that bringing animal cruelty into the picture is insensitive. Left to me, that's where we should be taking the conversation too. Animals too are conscious beings and have a right to life just as much as we do. Nevertheless, since this is meant to be a conversation on RUGA and LTP, I am willing to forego this aspect of the conversation. Any deescalation that transfers land to Fulani herdsmen through the back door will only create more problems and further bloodshed, maybe on a larger scale if current fellers is any indicators. It's in no one's interest to see any backdoor deals being made. Which is why we should encourage the FG, NEC, NGF, livestock breeders and farmers to go to the negotiating table and iron out the modalities of the LTP so that it benefits all stakeholders. Ah finally.**Sigh** |

MetaPhysical: Administration of criminal justice is important, but not quite as important as addressing the underlying social imbalances at the root of these conflicts. In Nigeria, we've been throwing armed robbers, kidnappers, yahoo boys and girls, and even violent ethnic agitators in jail since time immemorial, but has this done anything to address the occurrences of such social vices? No. If anything, criminality has drastically increased across the country. What does this tell you about the effectiveness of resorting to criminal justice administration as the sole remedy for social vices? There is an underlying reason we have an increasing number of people resorting to violent means like armed robbery, kidnapping and armed conflicts in pursuit of their goals, and that reason is desperation. Our society isn't doing enough to provide legitimate means for the plurality of us to freely pursue our goals. As such, those on the margins of society who have got nothing to lose, resort to violence as a means to bring their marginalisations to the fore, whether by able-bodied youth resorting to armed robbery, or jobless youths resorting to cattle rustling, or herdsmen resorting to the use of violence on farmers. It is this social inequity that should be addressed before looking to the criminal justice system for help. That's why I am calling for deescalation. So that we can figure out what everyone wants and needs on the negotiating table, then work out a plan that works for everyone, and where everyone benefits from. If after this, anybody resorts to violence, criminal justice can then be used as a tool to manage the insignificant minority to whom violence is an end unto itself. |

OdumegwuOjukwu: I thought we were discussing the specific policies of RUGA and LTP here? It seems your whole claim about RUGA and LTP being attempts by FG to seize lands isn't based on anything specific regarding the policies and their implementations, but based on your deep rooted suspicion of the Fulani ethnicity. With respect, having this conversation based on your subjective suspicions veers off too uncomfortably into the unfalsifiable realm of conspiracy theories. I am not so competent or willing to dabble into that because I don't deal in speculations. When you can show me specific properties about the RUGA or LTP policies that confirm this land seizing claim of yours, I will be open to taking your objections more seriously. |
Politics / Re: Call It Demonizing Or Anything, Let The Fulanis Do The Right Thing by AgentOfAllah: 12:26pm On Jul 18, 2019 |
OdumegwuOjukwu:Yes, I support the prosecution of any criminal who has participated in such hideous crimes. Justice is in fact a crucial step in the resolution of this crisis. This justice should likewise extend to criminals who have rustled the cattle of herdsmen, attacked their villages and families. If FG is indeed interested in Livestock transformation, why did they suspend implementation in so-called States that have accepted it? Or is the real target the South? Or is the real reason to populate every nooks and crannies of the country with itinerant fulanis? To what end? Internal colonization? Electoral value? The first question is interesting. The remaining questions are what one would normally refer to as 'loaded' questions. As I currently understand it, LTP is a separate project from RUGA. As far as I know, it is RUGA that has been suspended, not LTP. That said, I don't know enough about either of the policies to understand why RUGA was suspended. To this end, I think the FG should be more transparent about these projects and carry everyone along so that there would be no need to follow up relevant questions with loaded ones such as you have done here. And the animals are not at the center of this quandary, people are. Fulani herdsman crisis have done harm to people than to cows. Why would you suggest sparing thoughts for animals, when lives are lost everyday because Fulani man refuse to understand that his cattle business is his and his alone; just as traders, artisans, and others have already understood this.People are no doubt affected by this quandary. My suggestion to spare some thoughts for the animals involved is a whole new debate about the ethics of eating animals. I made a mistake in raising it here, but I am happy to discuss that further with you at a later time. Who is sparing thoughts for families whose loved ones are killed by herdsman? I surely haven't heard the president spared any thought or prayers for them let alone compensation.I imagine you are sparing thoughts for them. I am too, which is why I favour deescalation. I don't wan't to see any more people die because of problems that can be solved by negotiations. Oh yeah, one more thing: If you haven't heard the president spared a thought or prayers for the families of victims of the herders-farmers crisis, that does not necessarily mean he hasn't done so. We should be careful about making generic conclusions based on our subjective experiences. Read "President condemns "wicked" attacks by Fulani herdsmen in Benue" Why should the FG give herdsmen special preference to fulanis and herdsmen on scarce resources such as land? Why should I?FG shouldn't give preference to any group. |

OdumegwuOjukwu:Fair enough. I would assume you aren't one of the uninitiated. So that means you are able to offer at least one official document from the LTP or RUGA plan that details this land seizing policy of the FG in favour of Fulanis? I am really curious about this. To be up front, I have read a lot about RUGA and LTP on the pages of newspapers, but I have not yet seen a single policy document, so I don't know what any of these plans are about. If you have such documents, please share. I am happy to be educated by you today. |

Mmuoojukwu: To be fair, I was the first to admit, if you read my post again, that seeking to deescalate conflict is a radical, and, you might even say "dangerous" idea. As I see it, peaceful resolution of a crisis situation is a far more compelling dangerous situation to be in than, say, something like interethnic war. But that's just my sentiment dominated reasoning though. What does your non-sentimental reasoning say? 1 Like |
Politics / Re: Call It Demonizing Or Anything, Let The Fulanis Do The Right Thing by AgentOfAllah: 11:24am On Jul 18, 2019 |
OdumegwuOjukwu: I know of no such plan by FG, and as far as I know, this would be quite impossible because FG does not own any land in Nigeria according to the land use act of our constitution. Perhaps you could elaborate on that plan to seize farmlands to educate those who may be ignorant such as myself. One way to deescalate, I would say, is to support current efforts by the NGF, NEC, FG, farmers and livestock breeders to iron out the modalities of the National Livestock Transformation Plan that will be of net benefit to all stakeholders and then we follow up, protest and scream until it is implemented transparently and with sincerity of purpose. In the long term, we should spare some thoughts for the animals whose abuse is central to this sort of quandary and start looking to manage and curb our demands for, and consumption of animal products as a sentient species. 1 Like |

You didn't make it clear if you're advocating for war, but you certainly made it clear that you're sympathetic towards one breaking out. I suspect because the scale of destruction that takes place during wars is very very abstract to you. Your argument, on its own merit though, is rather nonsensical. It is this in summary: There is a crisis, therefore escalate the crises. Can you give examples of where this type of belligerent thinking ever worked? I have a radical idea: What about trying to deescalate said crisis? Anyway, no matter. If you're bent on your war, I just hope you'll be on the frontlines, commandeering your battalion to easy victory when that war you're eager for starts. 2 Likes |

asdfjklhaha:You have not given enough information to contextualise the situation. For example, was there anything to suggest to your mom that this was a sexual gesture or was it just that you innocuously sat on his laps? However, I will assume positive intentionality on your part and offer that there is nothing inherently wrong with sitting on your father's laps. Your mom is wrong to sexualise your relationship with your father. By so doing, she has casually objectified you and your father to one dimensional beings whose singular motives is sexual. This can be forever injurious to all of you, but especially you, as a young woman since her message now is that there is no man in your life, not even your father, whom you can trust and feel safe with. It will also deny you the opportunity to experience the full range of your platonic affection for your parents, which is unfortunate. I still struggle to express my affection to my parents because of these kinds of unnecessary barriers. Perhaps the most damaging effect of her action is that it feeds into the prevailing culture of toxic masculinity that victimises women and forces men to project a false image of the disaffectionate, malevolent sexual predator. I would give you the advantages of her actions, but I frankly see none. If anyone knows any, let me know. 3 Likes |

While I am morally and ethically on the side of Busola in this saga, I don't really know that Mrs. Fayemi's claim that sexual relationship with anybody below 18 is statutory rape. At 11, Nigeria presently has the lowest age of consent in the world, and so it seems statutory rape doesn't apply after 11 in Nigeria. Even more absurd is that two kids, say, 9 and 10, engaging in sexual relationship can technically be convicted of statutory rape because there are no legal protections for minors who find themselves in such a situation. Clearly, Nigeria's laws need serious overhauling. 5 Likes |

Gerrard59: Well, now you're beginning to ask the right questions! How do we judge who deserves to be paid? That's not so hard. American slavery is a pretty recent phenomenon so it's not so hard to trace the ancestry of slave descendants. All descendants of slaves, no matter their social or economic status, deserve to be paid. It doesn't even matter if they've mixed so much that you can't tell if they're black anymore, or if they are descendants of slaves that bought their freedom (that would only make them deserve more pay, in fact). Non of that information is of real consequence though. What's important is that they are descendants. There are a number of ways they can be paid: Tuition free education in the absolute best schools around for all, from nursery all the way to Ivy league education. Guaranteed jobs for those who have patiently acquired the minimum skill level required for civil service jobs, interest free mortgages or even outright provision of free properties in some of the most upscale neighbourhoods across the country. For those not interested in college, complete financial support to pursue their preferred vocational interests, free health care. These are just some of the ways restitutions can began to be paid. The modalities can be worked out by more competent policy hawks than myself. What makes you think I believe descendants of thieves would freely give back what their ancestors stole? No, they will kick and scream bloody murder!! Matter of fact, we've not even finished pronouncing "restitu..." and they're already panicking and playing this divide and conquer tricks on black immigrants, so as to weaken the positions of, and support for slave descendants. They may not have known about it, but if they continue to benefit from it after knowing their privilege comes from stolen labour, they have become generational partakers in the oppression. It's the apparatus of state that will eventually be used to enforce it when socialists begin to take over the reigns of power. |
