The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and Abuja has expressed worry over the recent judgement on the five suspected killers of Mrs. Bridget Agbahime who was killed in Kano state for alleged blasphemy. It was recently reported that the trial of five suspected killers of the 74 years old Bridget was brought to an end on Thursday, as a Kano magistrate set free all the accused. Bridget, an Imo indigene was killed on June 2, 2016, by a mob at Kofar Wambai market over alleged blasphemy in Kano state. The spokesperson of Northern CAN, Reverend John J. Hayab, told newsmen in Kaduna that the court judgment has further brought set back into the judiciary. He said such action would further encourage people to take laws into their hands under any guise since evil is seen to be unpunished. He however stressed that more needed to be done to ensure that the judiciary discharge its duty credibly. While he called on the Attorney General of the Federation to as a matter of urgency call the Kano State Attorney General to order to ensure that justice is done on the case; he assured that CAN would not relent in spite of the judgement already passed until justice is seen to have been done on the matter. "It is surprising that after all facts presented against the suspects, the Kano State Attorney General through the Principal State Counsel, Mr. Rabiu Yusuf told the court that, 'We received the case diary from the police on June 8. Having gone through the case diary, the Attorney General of Kano State evaluated the facts in accordance with Section 130 and 150 of the Criminal Procedure Code, presented the legal advice'," "The legal advice presented to the court dated June 24, states that there is no case to answer as the suspects are all innocent," Hayab lamented while he urged Christians and the general public to remain calm, assuring that all avenues would be explored to ensure justice. The five suspects freed on Thursday are Musa Abdullahi, Dauda Ahmed, Zubairu Abubakar, Abdulmumeen Mustafa and Abdullahi Abubakar. A Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja was yesterday told how the former Director-General of Nigeria Maritime Administration Safety Agency (NIMASA), Patrick Akpobolokemi and others requested for N496 million from a former National Security Adviser and diverted it to their personal use. Given evidence before Justice Raliat Adebiyi, an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) witness, Orji Chukwuma also revealed that Akpobolokemi equally transferred N504 million to a company, Arrow World Consultancy Services Limited. Presently Akpobolokemi is answering a 13-count charge bordering on conspiracy and stealing of over N754, 740,680.00 million belonging to NIMASA. alongside Captain Ezekiel Agaba, Ekene Nwakuche, Governor Amechee Juan, Vincent Udoye, Captain Adegboyega Sahib Olopoenia, and a company, Gama Marine Nigeria Limited. They had pleaded not guilty to all the count preferred against them. Led in evidence by the EFCC counsel, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, the witness (Chukwuma) told court that the sum of N816,200 million was fraudulently converted and transferred between 2014 and 2015. He said in the cause of investigation, it was discovered that the defendants converted money meant for the purchase of some items for NIMASA to personal use. Chukwuma who is an investigative officer with the EFCC recalled that the commission received intelligence report of alleged monumental fraud going on in NIMASA under the leadership of Akpobolokemi who was the Director General of the agency as at that time. According to the witness, based on the fraudulent presentation of documents presented by the 1st defendant through Office of National Security Adviser to former president Goodluck Jonathan, which was approved, he said an account was created in the name of a company, VIMSAS which was operated by the 2nd defendants and some others. When he was shown exhibit P9, he said it represented the alleged fraudulent representation by the 1st defendant to NSA on May 15, 2015 and a reply from NSA dated October 15, 2015 and a payment voucher. He said: “ Exhibit P10 represent a letter from NIMASA dated June 20,2014 and a correspondence from ONSA on July 30,2014 a payment voucher. The NSA approved the sum of N498million but the investigation revealed contrary. “A request of N318million was made and attached to the list of things to purchase but investigation revealed that the money was converted as against the list. There was instruction to move N498,200m from NIMASA account to VIMSAS account no 1013961926 domiciled in Zenith Bank. The 1st defendant gave the order for the transfer. “On exhibit P9, a mandate to transfer N318million to VIMSAS account with Zenith Bank account and was approved by the 1st defendant. We wrote to the bank and we received responses on the activities on the account. “It also showed that 2nd defendant is signatory to the account. On September 24 and November 16, 2014, a withdrawal of N3 million was made by the 3rd defendant on each day. On April 29,2014 an out flow of N11 million by Liquid Garden and converted.” He further told the court that there was no contract between VIMSAS and NIMASA’ no goods, services were rendered, only that N816,200 million was moved into the account and was converted to personal use. “Also, the sum of N318 million was also transferred to the Zenith Bank account which we discovered was used for personal purposes,” he said. He also told the court that through investigations, it was discovered that fictitious contracts were awarded to some companies one of which is Arrow World Consulting and Kofa Fadan Nigeria Ltd.. It was also discovered that the companies were paid for bogus contracts which were never executed. “During investigations, we spent two days searching for the address of the company which we finally located. “We also discovered that the sum of N11 million was transferred to one Aneke Julie Nkechi. It was discovered that she is related to Lady Captain in NiMASA. She was invited to the EFCC’s office where she claimed that she didn’t know how the money got into her account but later refunded the money to the Commission,” he said. “One of the defendants Ekene Nwakuche made eight withdrawals of N3 million each through the instruction of Captain Ezekiel Agaba,” he added. The court therefore admitted in exhibit, a statement made 1st and second defendants. While Edoka Onyeke objected to the additional statement attached. The matter was subsequently adjourned till November 30, 2016 for trial within trial. Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/11/efcc-witness-reveals-n754m-allegedly-diverted-ex-nimasa-boss/

Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki Friday visited President Muhammadu Buhari at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja. Buhari and Saraki met behind closed-doors inside the president's office. This was after the latter had joined the former in observing jumaat prayer at the State House mosque. Saraki was accompanied to the Villa by the chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation, Senator Danjuma Goje. Addressing State House correspondents later, the Senate President said Buhari's $29.9 billion foreign loan request which the Senate turned down on Tuesday was still a work in process. The upper legislative chamber had cited "technical grounds" rejecting President Muhammadu Buhari's request seeking approval for the loan. The Senate president, however, cautioned Nigerians against politicising what he called "very important issues". Saraki also clarified that the rejection of the loan request was not a reflection of the relationship between the executive and the legislature. He stated: "I came here to pray. I have finished praying and I just had a general felicitation with the president. It did not go beyond that. "We should not look at that (the loan request) as a reflection of the relationship between the Executive and the Legislature. "Don't let us politicise very important issues. As we said, this is work in progress." Read more at http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/politics/saraki-visits-buhari-says-29-9bn-loan-request-work-in-progress/170192.html#TpR8w3RtWDKM6ZP0.99

The Kaduna State Government has reported 725farmers who defaulted in the payment of agricultural loans they accessed from the Bank of Agriculture (BOA) Limited in March 2015 to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Media aide to Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, Mr. Samuel Aruwan who disclosed to newsmen in Kaduna, said the government had officially written the EFCC requesting for investigation and recovery of the funds. He said BOA in partnership with Kaduna state government in March 2015 disbursed agriculture loan to 1,859 beneficiaries but 725 beneficiaries failed to liquidate their loans to the tune of over N205 million. Aruwan said the state’s ministry of agriculture and forestry as well as the Bank of Agriculture, had been directed to furnish the EFCC with any additional information and/or documents that it might require. “The agriculture loan scheme is an intervention of the state government in partnership with BOA meant to assist farmers to have access to financial assistance to improve agricultural activities. It is a revolving loan that enables farmers to access funds and repay after a farming year to enable other beneficiaries enjoy similar interventions. BOA has therefore forwarded names and details of the defaulting beneficiaries to EFCC for investigation to commence,” he added. At least, three persons were wounded and two others arrested following fracas that broke out during the conduct of elections into the executive positions of the Ekiti state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) on Thursday. It was alleged that the victims, who were delegates from some primary and secondary schools across the state, were arrested and beaten by men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps( NSCDC) and Department of State Security(DSS). One of the contestants, Mr Lucas Adu, told journalists that those arrested were in the custody of the DSS while the injured had been taken to Ekiti State University Teaching hospital for treatment. He said trouble started when some of his supporters had queried the rationale behind the choosing of the delegates by the NUT electoral body. He accused the outgoing chairman , Mr Samuel Akosile of inviting the DSS and NSCDC men whom he alleged invaded the place and chased them out of the election venue. Adu said the security men had shot sporadically into the air to scare them, while some members got wounded in the ensuing melee. Adu accused the outgoing chairman, Com. Samuel Akosile and the NUT Secretary, Mr Olugbega Ajibade of short-changing a faction operating under the banner of Progressive Group of NUT by allegedly doctoring the delegate list to favour another contestant, Comrade Segun Odugbesan. He said the group had in a petition dated October 25 and signed by one Mr Adeparusi S.T. and addressed to the NUT headquarters in Abuja , had complained about the lop-sidedness and nothing was done to correct the perceived infraction. Adu said: “We want outright cancellation of this election. They started by doctoring the delegate lists. For instance, in Ado local government, the delegate list ought to be 87, they reduced it to 37, because Akosile knew that his group didn’t win in the local government. But he jacked the delegate lists in councils where his group won. “We wrote protest letters to the governor, national secretariat over the looming crisis. But when we got to the election centre, we said the manipulations should be addressed. They denied us of our right and we left the place in anger. But the State Secretary of the union denied the allegation, saying no delegate list was doctored, saying the delegates were carefully chosen in line with the constitution and based on financial strength of the local governments. Ajibade said nobody was beaten by security agencies, clarifying that security men were only there to maintain law and order. “Before the election, the issue was taken to the state executive council and all the representatives from the 16 local governments were present. At the meeting, the numbers allotted to each council was read and nobody raised objection. So, it was wrong for them to come and raised the issue on Election Day”.
