OK. I have not said that schools that do not do course work don't produce good PhDs, Oxford University, one of the best in the world does not require coursework for PhD candidates. I brought up the coursework issue and quality of PhD because of your stating that schools outside Nigeria award PhDs within 2-3 years. That's very misleading for those that don't know because even in Oxford, Harvard or MIT; PhDs are rarely completed in that time. A more realistic estimate would be 3-4 years, with or without coursework.

Of course papers are published by humans and every PhD candidate should have the potential to have papers accepted but I stressed the tough publication process because you stated that it is easy with your supervisor or some PhD-candidate-supporting journal...
Please don't misunderstand me.

samtol4:
No one is been deceived here .I am not a novice in the subject matter .Peer reviewed journals are not for Ghost or spirit it is human being research that is been accepted .You can't have all research accepted every time .There is time for rejection and acceptance .So indirectly schools that don't do coursework are not producing good PhD?

Don't be deceived, peer reviewed journal articles are not a piece of cake, even renowned scholars get rejections sometimes; there is no guarantee that your research work will be published on first attempt. I am speaking authoritatively. In the US and other places like Turkey it is mandatory to:
1. Complete 21 units of course work (7 courses)
2. Pass a qualifying exam
3. Publish a quality article with journal indexed in ISI
4. Write and defend PhD thesis
Those are the requirements for graduation. After completing all those steps it is difficult to say one has not done quality research and learnt extensively.

samtol4:
Publication in international journal is only difficult when you are in Nigeria but if you are in Overseas your supervisor will be a link to publish in reputable journals Infact many reputable journals are available for PhD students to showcase their research. Is it necessary for PhD student to write coursework again after completing coursework in Msc ?or is that a parameter to say a PhD is good?"A lot of schools award such"Please can you mention some of the schools so that members of this forum can avoid them

Yes there is the thing called a poor PhD where the candidate learns almost nothing about research, teaching or mentoring younger researchers. Such a PhD can be viewed as a glorified MSc just with a different title. Lots of schools award such degrees because it makes their records look good.

To throw more light on the issue of publication, having an internationally peer reviewed journal article (not conference) published is not a piece of cake. In the US and some other parts of the world where course work and qualification exam among others, are part of the requirements for graduation; it would be extremely tough to obtain a PhD within two years. PhD + MSc combined programmes exist but even those take 4-6 years to complete.

Again, only an exceptional genius can obtain a good PhD within two years.

PhD in 2 years is for geniuses; in three years might be possible but to finish without a single journal publication is a waste of time.
The average time spent in earning a good PhD is 3.5 years anywhere in the world.

samtol4:
congrats bros it would have been better you do your PhD outside Nigeria and you finish within 2 to 3years.

You should be asking yourself why you are so nosy; going through people's private files is not ok angry

sampete:
Just last week, I was going through the phone of a colleague when I stumbled on some xxxx rated videos and pics of her humble self. Out of curiously I opened one of the videos and started watching...immediately I sent some of those videos into my phone, then I continued watching. I was so engrossed in her acts that I didn't notice when she came in, she caught me watching her nude videos. I expected her to be angry or something, she wasn't, she just collected her phone and that's all!

This is a girl that takes church so seriously, she has even been trying to get me attend her church...I was shocked, disturbed, in fact my orientation about her changed.

Since then she has been acting kinda weird, always coming over to my place unlike befor, just yesterday, she wanted to spend d night in my side...pastor pickin wey I be, I cum say no!

The koko is why do girls leave nude videos and pics in their phone for people to stumble upon? I once picked up a phone misplaced by a girl where I saw so many nude pics of dat nearly got me blind.

Another instance was when a coursemate of mine gave me a memory card dat has been routed by shortcut virus, after removing the virus, her files came back and as I was going through, I saw some nude videos and pics. I got so shaken dat day when I came across nude pics and videos of this girl and another of my coursemate, a girl too, they were both in the act of lesbianism! Chai! These my eyes don see!

A call for paper could mean either one of two things:
1. Special issues of journals would usually call for papers
2. Conferences also call for papers.
In the aforementioned cases, you are expected to submit a complete article.

A call for abstracts requires you to respond by sending in only an abstract, the format and length will be specified. Some conferences call for abstracts first then the full paper afterwards while others require the abstract only. If an abstract is submitted, the expectation is that you will complete the work by sending in the full paper for review (conference or journal) and subsequent publishing (hopefully).

Sorry I can't help with your last question but I hope the information that I have provided helps to clarify things.

padeolu:

Please I need help on this question. Thanks.

What is the difference between call for paper and call for abstract?

In case of any of the two, what is one expected to submit? An abstract (summary), proposal or the whole research article?

Aside notice boards, where else can one source for (Nigerian) conference adverts since most (if not all) hardly reach the internet.

Thanks

Good day sir. Please do you know how much it costs to publish a journal online? Thanks.

I suppose you are asking about publishing an article in a journal and not the journal itself?
Well it depends on a number of factors, the price could vary from free to some hundreds of USDs:

1. "Subscription articles" are funded by payments that are made by subscribing individuals or institutions, and that are free to authors
2. "Open access articles" are funded by payments that are made by authors or their institutions or funding bodies, and that are free to readers
3. Every journal has her own price, there is no fixed price for all journals. Some of the factors that affect the price are: the impact factor, who/where indexes the journal, etc

So obviously it is not a question that can be answered by just quoting a figure. I hope the info has been of help.

Dear All, happy new year. It is time again to move on to a critical part of the doctoral journey which is the Research Proposal Writing (RPW).

A lot of intending doctoral students have challenges writing a winning research proposal .

This is a question to the experienced ones among us; What are the attributes of a research proposal destined for success .

While answering this question, you may choose to provide practical examples or share your personal experience with us.

Thank you.

Two things I would look out for are novelty and literature review.
Make sure you have read sufficient literature so that you can identify areas that have not been explored yet. A good literature review will also expose loop holes in already existing work.
Make sure your proposed solution is novel, it should be an original contribution to knowledge.
I hope that helps.

Please, stop being petulant. The idea you are trying to bring into this heated debate is still the same idea that kept most Nigerians in their ignorance. All you expect me to do is not to question PhD holders of what I find disturbing about them. For the fact that you are like one of those Nigerians who worship pastors stealing from them in Sunday congregation makes me a little perturbed about you very notion on what my posts are all about.

Don't you in your arrogance try to insult me again or I would retaliate with harsh ones. I think you are the person who doesn't know what PhD is all about. Most well known PhD holders serve the community and mean well for their various nations through their researches and experiment. And, here you are making mess of yourself trying to act tough. Please... angry angry angry angry

Are you threatening me, oh keyboard warrior? smiley You are not questioning, not even making constructive criticisms; all you are doing is trying your very best to ridicule people on here. Come back when you grow up, until then I will ignore you as you are dragging me down to your pitiful level.

The best way to deal with this troll is to ignore him, just don't reply to anything he says. He's behind a screen and that's where he will remain, nothing he says is of any worth. Ignore the troll and he'll find his way.

That's very useful information, I will let you know once I start sending out applications. I have heard that Singapore is quite a curious country, one that opens her doors to researchers so that might be a good option as well. Do let me know when you are in town. One of our collaborators is from Sabanci, in fact she is on my jury.

I have met some guys from MIT during my last visit to Singapore early this year. There is a joint fellowship for 100 positions yearly. You may consider that as well cos the progression is great. Do not hesitate to let me know when all is set..i have a friend currently doing her MIT-SIN postdoc also in your region.

I will buzz you also when i come around to your end cos i have stuff doing with Sabanci next yr.....

I have explained to you before the reason why I use the jargon 'peer-to-peer review' in my post. After reading your comment I find it appalling to comprehend due to the numbers of error in your use of English grammar, although, you are a PhD holder. Yet people click likes to it. Let me point them out for you above in bold. I find those minute errors with pedantic undertone ridiculous to say the least - having known you are a PhD certificate holder. That means I am not going to look up to you as a role model worth emulating or following the foot step, not until you can prove to me how useful you are to the advancement of the Nigerian society.

I concur on your journal grading method. However, that doesn't nullify the fact there are famous peer reviews and scientific journals out there. For example, there is science.org, nature.org,aip.org, etc. These are the famous on the list, well known to those in the academic community. Accept that I am correct not because you couldn't get your 'Turkish' research articles on any of the famous online journals but because you refuse to accept irrefutable fact and it is not the end of the world. All I am interested in at the moment is how much you can help to move Nigeria forward. Every other thing you say here is absolutely pedantic and irrelevant to the development of Nigeria.

Seriously, I admire your works but you must know how much interest you put into them to help your father's land is what matters. Not some puffy nature that cannot provide ways to find solutions to the problems in our society.

NNPC is a very corrupt corporation. Those in the top positions have been stealing the nation oil wealth for years without doing anything about the poor condition of the nation development. I cannot help laughing at that part of your post while I see you using the 'rotten' company as an example of where you have contributed your best to the good of that nation. That is completely unacceptable. Please, I would like you to post the link to your NNPC research work!

Thank you, sir.

Can you quietly bow out of this thread and stop exhibiting your ignorance in public? If you have nothing of note to contribute please keep quiet. From your posts, I can tell that you don't even have a clue of what a PhD is meant to achieve/contribute. Wip has been patient and kind enough to try and enlighten you but you won't humble your ignorant self.
Run along now and don't expose your folly any more than you have already.

@wip thanks for the encouragement boss and I hope all's good with you. I met with some Profs from MIT, Microsoft, Siemens and Toshiba in Italy this summer and they were quite interested in my work, and said I am welcome to join their group once I'm done. So of course I will explore those opportunities and look out for others.

Let me help you out.

My point being that there will not be much progress in this country when the COMPARATIVE wage for work done is so lopsided as it currently is.
Why should anyone want to do an honest job when he can simply become a politician, even at the LG councillor post and receive huge amount of money each & every month for doing almost nothing while his compatriots keep hailing him to even more promotion and pray to God for intervention?

Maybe if the person na confirmed MUMU.

Get it now

I'm sorry to say but that is the mentality that keeps us down there. I might be hoping against hope but hey I have hope! I understood you but I wanted you to spell it out. I will probably not be talking like this if I were in their shoes (politicians, etc) but from where I stand I can only hope for the best.
It is and has been a very sad situation.

The change we seek will not come over night but at this stage just showing an effort is a positive sign. It might be business as usual with the money but it would be nice to keep hope alive and have a positive attitude. An honest man is not necessarily a stupid man.

Oh, I forgot they furthered the course of making a law to allow child brides for SINator Yerima!!!

I also hope all the money being dished out to the union will be used to further the course of education and research in Nigeria.

Do you know what the term "zenci" means? Beyaz (White) Turk and Siyah (Black) Turk are totally different things. I wonder why people try to explain or interpret his statement in another way; once you say zenci, everyone knows who you are refering to. The Aljazeera article has nothing to do with his specific statement.
It is so annoying

vedaxcool: White Turks versus Black Turks

The origin of this distinction goes back to the 1980s, when the phrase "White Turk" was used by journalists to depict the rising urban bourgeoisie. It had a clear elitist and exclusionary undertone, distinguishing the so-called Kemalist secularists from the so-called anti-Kemalist "Islamists".

The "Black Turks" had no qualms with the distinction either. It was none other than Prime Minister Erdogan who declared in an interview, as early as 2003: "In this country, there is a segregation between White Turks and Black Turks. Your brother Tayyip belongs to the Black Turks."

The phrase "White Turks-Black Turks" quickly became a code word for the ideogical and cultural cleavages of the AKP era. Now, the distinction is based on lifestyle differences, with the urban, Westernised, educated and relatively wealthy classes opposed to rural, illiterate, backward and poor masses.

The class racism inherent in the distinction is mixed in certain cases with a strong dose of biological racism, as the infamous case of Mine Kirikkanat, a journalist who talked about Black Turks "with short legs, hairy and long arms, ruminating, burping and scratching" in an article she wrote in July 2005, illustrates.

It is often accompanied by an element of welfare chauvinism as the elites are no longer willing to share their prosperity with the poor masses.

Black Turks strike back

The Gezi protests have shown us that this distinction is more deep-seated and pervasive than we thought, and that White Turk elitism has created its own Frankenstein, Black Turk populism.

That a defiant Erdogan would rely on the imagery of the oppressed, yet silent and law-abiding majority, is not in itself surprising.

Erdogan has been spilling irritating statements that works on everyones nerves far and wide since the protest started, but on a general note Turkish are very nice, friendly and accommodating people, I go to Turkey yearly on holiday and they have tremendous respect for Nigerians, I have visited remote places and all I get is welcome and respect from the indigenes, and being a Nigerian Blackman/woman they want to take pictures and make friend with u and are always friendly, so from experience I take it that Erdogan has become confused in his own deluded world of trying to equate himself to the great Ataturk. An average turkish seperate politics and social norms from religion as laid down long ago by Ataturk but Erdogan is trying to force his citizens the other way by banning sales of beer near mosques and kissing in the public, hoping he wouldn't get resistance. grin grin

I live in Turkey so yes I can confirm that there are Turks that are very nice and hospitable. Erdogan is not trying to equate himself to Ataturk he knows it is impossible. Ataturk was not conservative, Erdogan is. In fact Erdogan if left on his own will get rid of all the Ataturk principles and instill the old Ottoman-type of system. The man talks carelessly and shows no remorse; he has an ego that is bigger than his own country; he has proved to be undiplomatic and his people are tired. The followers he has are the ignorant and illiterate that NEED to be dictated to and will not question anything.
