The Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency, OGEPA, has intensified efforts to enforce environmental compliance among industries with an unscheduled inspection of Metal Recycling Industries Limited in Ogijo, Sagamu Local Government Area. The General Manager of the Agency, Hon. Kehinde Bello, who led the enforcement team on the inspection, said the exercise was part of OGEPA's commitment to ensuring industries comply with environmental laws aimed at protecting public health and the environment. During the visit, the team assessed the company's pollution control systems, waste management practices, air emission control measures and other environmental management processes to determine compliance with approved environmental standards. Hon. Bello said routine and surprise inspections remain critical to the Agency's enforcement strategy, stressing that all industries operating in Ogun State must obtain the required environmental permits and adopt effective pollution prevention measures to minimise the impact of their operations on neighbouring communities. He urged the management of the company to sustain environmental best practices, address areas requiring improvement and continue to cooperate with OGEPA in promoting a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable environment. The inspection, according to the Agency, underscores the Ogun State Government's resolve to ensure industrial development goes hand in hand with environmental protection and compliance with existing regulations.

*Sports journalists advocate stronger grassroots sports programmes, greater stakeholder collaboration* The Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Ogun State Chapter, Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji, has called on the Ogun State Government to develop a comprehensive sports masterplan to ensure sustainable sports development and effective talent discovery. Speaking after his re-election during the association's delegates' congress in Abeokuta, Comrade Ogunsiji said investments in sports infrastructure must be complemented by proper maintenance, regular competitions and long-term athlete development. He expressed concern over the poor condition of facilities at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, particularly the abandoned swimming pool and the absence of a functional practice pitch, urging government to prioritise rehabilitation and maximise the use of existing infrastructure. The Ogun SWAN Chairman also called for the restoration of commercial and recreational activities within the stadium complex, saying reviving the night economy would improve security, increase internally generated revenue and make the facility more attractive to residents. Comrade Ogunsiji regretted that the gains recorded during the 2025 National Sports Festival had not translated into sustained grassroots sports programmes capable of producing future champions. He also urged the Ogun State Football Association, football academies and clubs to strengthen talent identification and development, noting that the state had not produced many players for the national teams in recent years despite its rich football heritage. The SWAN Chairman further appealed for stronger partnerships among government, corporate organisations and sports stakeholders to revive sports development initiatives and improve support for sports journalism. Meanwhile, the national leadership of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria has While presenting the certificates of return to the newly elected executive members, the National President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Comrade Isaiah Benjamin, represented by the South-West Vice President, Ayodeji Ogunsakin, urged the newly elected Ogun State executive to prioritise capacity building, especially in digital journalism and emerging media technologies, to enhance professional sports reporting. Ogunsakin also lauded the Ogun State Government for providing the chapter with a befitting secretariat, describing the facility as the best among SWAN chapters in the South-West region. He appealed to the state government to sustain its support for the association while urging other critical stakeholders in the sports sector to partner with the chapter in advancing sports development. Other elected officers are; Taiwo Fabajo from OGTV as Vice Chairman, Olusegun Folarin from Radio Nigeria as Secretary, Seun Odunlami as Assistant Secretary, Michael Adesanya from Core TV as Treasurer, Bayo Adegboyega from OGBC as Welfare Officer and Hassan Yusuf Olatunji as Financial Secretary.

No Hiding Place: Inside Operation Kosaye and Ogun’s New Security Doctrine By Seyi Bakare From intelligence-led policing and inter-state collaboration to sustained investment in security infrastructure, Operation Kosaye is emerging as more than a police operation. It is becoming the cornerstone of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s evolving security doctrine and a potential template for tackling cross-border crime in Nigeria. For years, the forests straddling the Lagos-Ogun border were synonymous with danger. Motorists dreaded the Sagamu-Ijebu Ode corridor after dusk. Farmers ventured into the bush with trepidation, while residents of boundary communities lived with the constant fear that kidnappers, armed robbers and other violent criminals could strike at will before disappearing into the dense forests separating the two states. Today, that fear is gradually giving way to cautious confidence. The change is being driven by Operation Kosaye—a coordinated security offensive that has, within weeks of its launch, altered the security narrative across one of Nigeria’s busiest economic corridors. “Kosaye,” a Yoruba expression meaning there is no hiding place, is more than the name of a security operation. It encapsulates a new doctrine of intelligence-led policing designed to deny criminals the sanctuaries they have long exploited along the Lagos-Ogun axis. Launched at the Police Training School, Iperu-Remo, the operation immediately sent a clear signal that state boundaries would no longer provide escape routes for criminal syndicates. A Joint Offensive Delivering Results Operation Kosaye was conceived by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, and rolled out through the coordinated efforts of the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, and his Lagos State counterpart, Fatai Tijani. Its operational focus spans the forests, border settlements and ungoverned spaces stretching from Kara and the Long Bridge through Sagamu, Ogere and Ijebu Ode to the Ikorodu and Epe boundary communities. The results have been both swift and significant. Security operatives combing the forests around Iperu and other flashpoints along the J3/J4 corridor rescued kidnapped victims who had been held captive along the Ijebu Ode axis, neutralised suspected kidnappers during fierce encounters, arrested scores of criminal suspects and recovered sophisticated weapons, including AK-47 rifles, pump-action guns, locally fabricated firearms, ammunition and communication equipment. Equally significant was the destruction of criminal camps and illegal settlements hidden deep inside the forests—hideouts that had, for years, enabled kidnapping syndicates to operate with alarming impunity. Perhaps more importantly, police authorities have made it clear that Operation Kosaye is not a one-off show of force. Supported by aerial surveillance, intelligence gathering and sustained inter-state collaboration, it is designed as a continuous operation intended to permanently deny criminal gangs access to the forests they once regarded as safe havens. Security Through Collaboration For Governor Dapo Abiodun, the significance of Operation Kosaye extends beyond arrests and recovered weapons. It validates a philosophy his administration has consistently advanced since 2019—that contemporary security challenges require collaboration rather than competition among states. For too long, criminals exploited jurisdictional boundaries, committing crimes in one state and escaping into another before security agencies could effectively coordinate their response. Operation Kosaye dismantles that advantage by creating seamless operational cooperation between Lagos and Ogun States. Commending the initiative through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, Governor Abiodun described the operation as bold, proactive and intelligence-driven, noting that it had significantly boosted public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force while making the Lagos-Ogun corridor increasingly inhospitable to kidnappers, bandits and other criminal elements. He urged other states across the federation to embrace similar collaborative security frameworks, arguing that organised crime can only be defeated when law enforcement agencies transcend administrative boundaries and work as one coordinated force. The governor also praised Commissioners Ojajuni and Tijani, alongside the officers and men participating in the operation, for their professionalism, courage and commitment to duty. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting security agencies with logistics, operational vehicles, surveillance technology and other critical resources necessary to sustain the gains already recorded. His Lagos State counterpart, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, echoed similar sentiments, describing the operation as a major offensive against criminality and pledging continued support through the Lagos State Security Trust Fund. That both governors have spoken with one voice underscores one of the defining features of Operation Kosaye: a rare but welcome example of inter-state cooperation against criminal networks that have historically exploited state boundaries to evade justice. Built on Years of Deliberate Investment Operation Kosaye did not emerge in isolation. Rather, it represents the latest chapter in a broader security architecture painstakingly developed by the Abiodun administration over the past seven years. From the outset, the governor recognised that sustainable economic growth could only flourish where lives and property were secure. That conviction informed the strengthening of the Ogun State Security Network Agency, Amotekun Corps, through continuous recruitment, specialised training and enhanced operational capacity. The corps has been equipped with patrol vehicles, motorcycles, communication gadgets and intelligence assets to improve rapid response and community policing across the state. Governor Abiodun has equally insisted that Amotekun must remain disciplined, professional and accountable, repeatedly warning operatives against extortion, abuse of power and any conduct capable of eroding public confidence in the corps. Beyond Amotekun, the administration revitalised the Ogun State Security Trust Fund, creating a sustainable platform for private-sector participation in security financing. Police formations across the state have also benefited from consistent government support through infrastructure upgrades, patrol vehicles, communication equipment and other operational logistics. The administration has further strengthened community policing by deepening engagement with traditional rulers, youth organisations, community leaders and local vigilante groups, recognising that intelligence gathering remains the first line of defence against criminality. Protecting a Strategic Gateway Ogun occupies a uniquely strategic position within Nigeria. Bordering Lagos—the nation’s commercial hub—and sharing an international boundary with the Republic of Benin, the state serves as both an economic gateway and a critical transit corridor. That geography also presents unique security challenges. Recognising this reality, Governor Abiodun has consistently prioritised border security as a strategic imperative. Only recently, the state government, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Tokunbo Talabi, met with the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the South-West to deepen cooperation against cross-border crime while consolidating gains recorded under the Gateway Shield security initiative. Similarly, security agencies comprising the police, the military’s 35 Artillery Brigade, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and Amotekun jointly undertook confidence-building patrols and operational assessments along the Ogun-Ondo boundary, particularly within the Ogun Waterside axis. The objective was unmistakable: to extend the collaborative security model beyond the Lagos border and ensure that every vulnerable frontier receives equal vigilance. Redrawing the Security Map Taken together, these initiatives reveal a coherent governance philosophy. Governor Abiodun views security not merely as law enforcement but as the foundation upon which economic development, industrial growth and social stability are built. That philosophy carries particular significance for Ogun State, home to one of Nigeria’s largest industrial clusters and a major gateway for the movement of people and goods into Lagos. Factories cannot thrive where workers are afraid. Investors do not commit capital where insecurity prevails. Farmers cannot cultivate their land under the constant threat of kidnapping. In that context, Operation Kosaye is far more than a successful police operation. It represents another milestone in an evolving security doctrine aimed at making Ogun State one of Nigeria’s safest destinations for investment, commerce and human development. The rescued victims, dismantled criminal camps, recovered weapons and numerous arrests demonstrate that intelligence-led policing, backed by political will, inter-agency synergy and sustained inter-state collaboration, can produce measurable results. The real test, however, lies in sustaining the momentum. If the Lagos-Ogun model continues to deliver results—and if other states embrace similar collaborative frameworks—Operation Kosaye may ultimately be remembered not simply as a successful security operation, but as the blueprint for a new era of policing in Nigeria. For criminals who once relied on forests and state boundaries as shields, the message is now unmistakable. There is, indeed, no hiding place.

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has approved the extension of the one-day-off-duty work palliative for eligible public and civil servants in the state. The Governor has also approved the payment of a ₦10,000 monthly transport allowance for an additional three months, covering July to September 2026. The measures are aimed at cushioning the impact of transportation costs on workers and motivating them to continue delivering efficient and excellent service to the people of Ogun State. It will be recalled that Governor Abiodun had earlier approved the palliative measures for the period of April to June 2026 in response to the increase in the pump price of petrol. Under the renewed arrangement, the one-day-off-duty concession will not apply to officers on shift duties or personnel providing essential services. These include medical personnel, judicial service workers, teaching and non-teaching staff in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions, security personnel, political office holders, accounting officers, directors, as well as other officers receiving Special Responsibility Allowances because of the nature of their responsibilities, which require their physical presence at work. A circular issued by the State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Iskeel Olanrewaju Saka, mni, urged all eligible workers to make the most of the arrangement while ensuring that service delivery is not compromised. The state government reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of workers and pledged to continue implementing policies that enhance productivity while easing the economic burden on the workforce.

The Ogun State Government has warned market leaders and traders to stop turning markets into illegal waste dumps or risk having their markets shut down in the interest of public health. The warning was issued by the Special Adviser to the Governor and Managing Director of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority, OGWAMA, Honourable Farouk Akintunde, following the evacuation of long-standing waste heaps at the Farmers Market on Solu Road in Ifo and Mamu Market in Ijebu North Local Government Areas. Akintunde described the practice of dumping refuse within market premises instead of at designated collection points as unacceptable. He said such actions create environmental hazards and expose food items to contamination, increasing the risk of food poisoning and the spread of diseases. He stressed that markets should be kept clean through proper waste management, noting that they are public places where residents purchase food and other essential items. The OGWAMA boss added that the state government has consistently engaged market leaders on proper waste disposal and expects full compliance with sanitation regulations. He warned that the government would not tolerate a return to illegal waste dumping after the recent clean-up exercise, adding that any market found violating waste management rules could be closed to protect public health.

2027: How Abiodun Is Securing Ogun Legacy Through Yayi By ’Dare Odufowokan In politics, succession is often the ultimate test of leadership. While some leaders leave office without a clear successor, others become consumed by bitter succession battles that fracture parties, stall governance and diminish their legacies. In Ogun State, Governor Dapo Abiodun appears determined to chart a different course. With less than a year remaining in his constitutionally permitted second term, the governor has moved decisively to settle the question of succession within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), endorsing Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as the party’s consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 election. Beyond producing the party’s standard bearer, the move is widely seen as an attempt to preserve political stability, sustain the developmental momentum of the current administration and ensure that the policies and programmes initiated over the last seven years are not abandoned after May 2027. The endorsement, announced during a strategic APC caucus meeting in Abeokuta, effectively brought an end to months of intense political speculation and the ambitions of more than a dozen aspirants who had expressed interest in succeeding Governor Abiodun. Unlike previous transitions in the state’s political history, where succession contests often left deep divisions within the ruling party, the governor opted for consensus-building, extensive consultations and stakeholder engagement before settling on Adeola. Addressing party leaders after the decision, Abiodun explained that the overriding consideration was the long-term interest of Ogun State. “Painstakingly, while placing the interests of the good people of our dear state above every other consideration, we have decided who is most deserving,” he declared. Moments later, Senator Adeola was presented to party leaders amid prolonged applause. The governor described the decision as one driven not by politics alone, but by a sense of responsibility to the future. “We needed to be forward-looking. There are so many things at stake, and the future of Ogun State remains paramount. What we have achieved reflects the true Ogun spirit. History will be kind to all of us because we have demonstrated that peaceful succession and consensus-building are possible in our politics,” he said. There was another important consideration. Since Ogun State was created in 1976, no governor has emerged from Ogun West Senatorial District. By backing Adeola, Governor Abiodun also aligned himself with the growing argument that the district deserves the opportunity to produce the state’s next chief executive in the interest of equity and fairness. The decision has continued to generate widespread reactions within the APC and beyond. For many party leaders, Adeola’s emergence was less about political compromise and more about selecting a candidate whose experience in public office has prepared him for the demands of governing one of Nigeria’s foremost industrial states. Former Political Adviser to the Governor, Adebiyi Adeleye, believes the APC made the right choice. According to him, Adeola’s progression from the Ogun State House of Assembly to the House of Representatives and eventually the Senate demonstrates both political maturity and administrative experience. “He is the most prepared and experienced candidate to lead Ogun State into its next phase of development,” Adeleye said, while commending Governor Abiodun for what he described as securing the state’s future through careful succession planning. Former Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Suraj Adekunbi, shares a similar view. He argues that Adeola’s years in the National Assembly, particularly as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, have given him invaluable exposure to public finance, budgeting and governance. “As a chartered accountant and experienced legislator, he possesses the qualities required to manage a state of Ogun’s economic significance,” Adekunbi noted. Across the state, support groups have also welcomed the governor’s decision. The Yayi Progressives Movement described the endorsement as a triumph of competence, continuity and equity, applauding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Abiodun and other APC leaders for supporting Adeola’s emergence. “Governor Abiodun has shown leadership by putting Ogun State first. History will remember this decision. Yayi represents competence, vision and years of dedicated service,” the group stated. Similarly, The Remo Group (TRG33), a socio-political organisation based in Ogun East, praised the governor for aligning with what it described as the wishes of the people. “By choosing Yayi, Governor Abiodun demonstrated that he understands the mood of the people. He has presented a candidate capable of winning the election while sustaining the developmental strides of the present administration,” the group said. Beyond political circles, many residents say continuity has become one of the defining issues ahead of the 2027 election. For Tunde Ogunyemi, a commercial motorcyclist in Ado-Odo/Ota, the governor’s endorsement offers reassurance that ongoing infrastructure projects will not be abandoned. “This government has done so much for the people. We want someone who will continue the good work instead of starting all over again,” he said. In Ilaro, the mood is equally optimistic. “Our turn has finally come,” said Alhaja Risikat Bello, a cassava trader. “Yayi is our son. We have seen what he has done for our communities and we believe Ogun West deserves this opportunity.” Civil servants and labour leaders have also spoken in favour of policy continuity. “We have seen what happens whenever governments change and projects are abandoned because of political differences. We hope this transition will be different,” said Comrade Arinola Ogunsanwo in Abeokuta. Supporters of the APC candidate also point to his legislative record. Within three years in the Senate, they say, Adeola facilitated more than 53 development projects covering roads, schools, healthcare facilities, police stations, community halls and other infrastructure across Ogun’s three senatorial districts. His regular empowerment programmes—including scholarships, grants for market women, transformers, ambulances and school buses—are also cited as evidence of his grassroots connection. The choice of Mrs. Kudirat Balogun, a finance and corporate governance professional, as his running mate has further reinforced, in the eyes of supporters, the ticket’s emphasis on competence, inclusiveness and balanced representation. Governor Abiodun has consistently framed his support for Adeola within the broader objective of preserving his administration’s achievements. “This move is about legacy and the future of the Gateway State,” he has repeatedly maintained. Adeola, for his part, has pledged to sustain the programmes of the present administration while introducing new initiatives to accelerate development. “When elected, I will not only sustain and build upon the achievements of the current administration, but also ensure a seamless transition, inclusive governance and sustained progress for Ogun State,” he has promised. His message since emerging as the APC candidate has been one of unity. “Going forward from today, I assure you that a new Ogun State is being built. Everything necessary to keep our people united and take our state to greater heights will be done.” Ultimately, every governor hopes to leave office with a legacy that endures beyond his tenure. For Governor Dapo Abiodun, that legacy is not only reflected in roads, housing estates, industrial investments, healthcare facilities and educational reforms. It also lies in his determination to ensure that those achievements are preserved by a successor he believes shares the same vision. Whether the electorate endorses that vision in 2027 will be decided at the ballot box. But within the APC, Governor Abiodun has already made his choice, and in doing so, has set the tone for what promises to be one of the most consequential governorship elections in Ogun State’s democratic history. *_Odufowokan is the Senior Special Assistant to the Ogun state governor on Public Communications_ |
The Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency, OGEPA, has called on industries operating across the state to strengthen compliance with environmental regulations, improve corporate social responsibility programmes and adopt sustainable environmental practices. The Agency's General Manager, Hon. Kehinde Bello, made the call during a familiarisation tour of industries in Ogun Central, Ogun West and Ogun East Senatorial Districts. According to Bello, the visit was aimed at assessing the level of environmental compliance by industries and strengthening collaboration between OGEPA and the private sector in protecting the environment. He urged companies to organise regular environmental training for their staff to enhance their knowledge and promote global best practices in environmental management. The OGEPA boss also encouraged industries to partner with the Ogun State Government on tree-planting initiatives to combat global warming, reduce the effects of climate change and promote environmental sustainability. The Commissioner described the investment as another strong endorsement of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s deliberate economic policies, which have continued to position Ogun State as the preferred destination for investors across critical sectors of the economy. He noted that beyond expanding the state’s agricultural value chain, the investment would enhance food security, boost internally generated revenue, promote rural development and create sustainable jobs for thousands of Ogun residents. Ogun State First Lady, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, has flagged off the annual free medical outreach at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu, with a renewed emphasis on cervical cancer prevention and complex surgical interventions. The programme, coordinated by the First Lady’s Ajose Foundation in partnership with a team of U.S.-based medical specialists, aims to provide free healthcare services to over 300 vulnerable residents. A key highlight of this year’s edition is the commissioning of an advanced colposcope at OOUTH. The device is designed to enable doctors to conduct precise cervical screenings and obtain timely tissue samples for early diagnosis. "Our core message is prevention," Mrs. Abiodun stated. "Early detection is far more effective and less costly than treating advanced-stage diseases. By providing access to advanced diagnostic tools, we are empowering women to take charge of their health before conditions become life-threatening." Dr. Bimpe Adenusi, leader of the 35-man U.S. medical team, confirmed that the colposcope significantly enhances the hospital’s ability to fight cervical cancer through high-precision examination, noting that this year’s mission represented a major expansion in surgical capability, particularly with the introduction of complex orthopaedic procedures that are often unaffordable for many residents. "We did a knee replacement surgery for a 5-year old this year, for he first time. Such surgeries cost millions of Naira, but thanks to the First Lady, we were to do both legs for that little boy for free, and there are more scheduled for hip replacement, bone setting and knee replacement surgeries. We are happy to get this support to help more people," Dr. Adenusi stated. Operating from nine different theaters, other surgical procedures include breast lump removal, fibroid surgeries, hernia surgeries and thyroidectomies. Mrs. Abiodun urged well-meaning Nigerians to assist the less privileged, emphasizing that quality healthcare should be accessible to all citizens regardless of status. "When you are in a position to help those who cannot help themselves, don’t hesitate," she said. "For me, this is about giving back." The wife of the APC gubernatorial flagbearer, Mrs. Temitope Adeola, who attended the flag-off, also commended the initiative and echoed the call for affluent Nigerians to invest in community welfare. The medical mission is ongoing, with specialists currently working to ensure all registered patients receive treatment as efficiently as possible. |

The Ogun State Government has described as false and malicious a viral report alleging that members of the State Executive Council are compelled to prostrate before Governor Dapo Abiodun whenever he is displeased with them. In a statement issued on Monday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, described the publication by an online blog, Naijamixed, titled "Cabinet members reportedly prostrate before Ogun State Governor when he is displeased with them," as a deliberate fabrication aimed at ridiculing the governor and misleading the public. Akinmade said the allegation was entirely baseless, stressing that no commissioner or cabinet member had ever been asked to prostrate before Governor Abiodun. He also dismissed as "ridiculous" the claim that the Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, prostrates before the governor, describing it as further evidence of the publication's lack of credibility. According to him, the blog abandoned the principles of professional journalism by publishing unverified and sensational claims designed to create unnecessary tension in the state. The government explained that the report deliberately distorted a widely publicised incident involving local government chairmen following allegations made by the former Chairman of Ijebu East Local Government, Hon. Wale Adedayo. Akinmade stated that the council chairmen voluntarily prostrated before Governor Abiodun while appealing for forgiveness on behalf of their colleague, noting that the gesture was rooted in Yoruba culture and was neither requested nor encouraged by the governor. "At no time did Governor Abiodun request, direct or encourage anyone to prostrate before him. The gesture was entirely voluntary," the statement said. The Special Adviser further recalled that the allegations raised by Adedayo were investigated by the Ogun State House of Assembly, while the Joint Account and Allocation Committee (JAAC) confirmed that statutory allocations to local governments were duly disbursed and not diverted by the state government. He added that the Ogun State Government had, on several occasions, supplemented local government funds to enable councils meet their financial obligations. Akinmade expressed surprise that the incident, which received widespread media attention at the time, was being revisited years later with what he described as a deliberate distortion of facts. He urged members of the public to disregard the publication and rely on credible sources of information, emphasizing that freedom of expression does not extend to spreading falsehood or inciting the public. The government also called on relevant security agencies to investigate the source of the publication and those behind it, with a view to preventing any attempt to undermine the peace and stability currently enjoyed in Ogun State. Akinmade reaffirmed the Ogun State Government's commitment to transparency, accountability and responsible engagement with the media in the interest of the people.

The Ogun State Government has temporarily relocated students of Our Lady of Apostles Girls Grammar School, Ijebu-Ode, to an alternative location as investigations into the recent chemical inhalation incident on the school premises intensify. Governor Dapo Abiodun disclosed this during an on-the-spot assessment of the school, noting that preliminary findings have confirmed the presence of methane gas in the affected area. The governor explained that the relocation became necessary to safeguard the health and safety of students, teachers, and other members of the school community, while also creating an enabling environment for experts to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the source and cause of the contamination. He noted that the state government, through the Ministries of Environment and Health, is collaborating with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the Department of Geology, Olabisi Onabanjo University, to determine the root cause of the incident. “Twice now, we have recorded cases of pollution in this school and some neighbouring schools. “What is interesting is that the gas pollution occurred at about the same time in the affected schools—about three schools altogether—and this has happened on two separate occasions. “Following the first occurrence, we installed gas analysers across the schools to determine the nature and concentration of the gas, which has now been confirmed to be methane. “Preliminary findings suggest there may be geological factors involved, possibly fault lines common to these locations, which could be responsible for the emissions. “We are awaiting the final report from the professionals handling the investigation,” he said. Governor Abiodun reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting the lives of students, teachers, and residents of the affected communities, stressing that every necessary measure would be taken to identify the source of the pollution and prevent a recurrence. He assured residents that the government remains focused on safeguarding public health and environmental safety, adding that updates would be provided as investigations progress. “In the meantime, we have evacuated the students from the school. The rumour that these incidents are being deliberately targeted at schools is unfounded and should be disregarded. This appears to be a natural occurrence, and we are determined to get to the bottom of it. “The students have been moved out temporarily, and until we are satisfied that the environment is completely safe and conducive for learning, they will not return. We will continue to investigate the cause of this situation and take all necessary steps to address it,” the governor added.
