As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark this year’s Children’s Day celebration, our hearts remain heavy with pain, fear and sorrow over the recent kidnapping of innocent school children in Ogbomosho, Oyo State, alongside the tragic killing of a teacher in the line of duty. At a time when children should be celebrated, protected and given hope for a brighter tomorrow, many Nigerian children are living in fear, uncertainty and trauma. Schools, which should be safe places for learning and growth, are gradually becoming centers of panic and insecurity. This ugly reality calls for sober reflection rather than celebration. We therefore call on the National Union of Teachers (NUT), the Ministry of Education, educational stakeholders, civil society groups, religious bodies and all well-meaning Nigerians across the South West and the entire country to observe this year’s Children’s Day as a “Red Children’s Day” — a day of mourning, awareness and urgent demand for government action. The blood of innocent teachers and the tears of kidnapped children cry loudly for justice. The future of Nigeria is under attack, and silence can no longer be an option. The Nigerian government must wake up to its responsibility of protecting lives and properties. Our children deserve safety. Our teachers deserve protection. Parents deserve peace of mind. Communities deserve security. We strongly call on the Federal Government and security agencies to: •Intensify efforts in rescuing all kidnapped children and victims. •Ensure that those responsible for these evil acts are arrested and prosecuted. •Strengthen security around schools and vulnerable communities. •Improve intelligence gathering and proactive security operations. •Declare stronger and stricter punishment against banditry, terrorism and kidnapping. •Restore confidence in the nation’s security architecture. Nigeria cannot continue to lose its future generation to insecurity. We refuse to become wanderers in our own land. We refuse to watch our homes become desolate because of fear and violence. We want sanity back in our country. We want peace restored in our communities. We want our children back home safely. We want our teachers protected. The time to act is now. A nation that fails to protect its children is gradually destroying its tomorrow. Let this Children’s Day not only be a day of remembrance, but also a turning point for national awakening and decisive action. Nigerian Government — act fast and act now. By Kayode Akinmade When the results of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Ogun East Senatorial District primary election were announced on May 18, 2026, the outcome was emphatic and politically instructive. Prince Dapo Abiodun, outgoing Governor of Ogun State, secured 75,550 votes out of 99,503 ballots cast, winning across all nine local government areas of the district. His closest challenger, incumbent Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel, who withdrew on the eve of the election, polled 398 votes. Beyond the overwhelming margin, the result reflected something deeper: a broad endorsement of Governor Abiodun’s record in office and his political standing within Ogun East. For many within the APC, the primary was not merely about succession politics. It was a referendum on performance, infrastructure delivery, economic expansion and leadership continuity. The question therefore is not simply why Prince Dapo Abiodun won the APC ticket — but why many party members believe he genuinely earned it. A Businessman Turned Governor Born on May 29, 1960, in Iperu-Remo, Prince Dapo Abiodun entered public office after years in business and corporate leadership. A man of many parts, he built his private-sector career through Heyden Petroleum Limited and held leadership positions in financial and investment institutions including First Marina Trust and the First Interstate Group. Supporters often point to this business background as one of the defining influences on his governance style — one that prioritised infrastructure, investment attraction, industrialisation and fiscal expansion. Upon assuming office in 2019, his administration unveiled the ISEYA development agenda — Infrastructure, Social Welfare, Education, Youth and Women Empowerment, and Agriculture — as the framework guiding governance in Ogun State. Over the last seven years, that agenda has become closely associated with road construction, industrial growth, transport connectivity and economic reforms. Infrastructure as a Defining Legacy No aspect of the Abiodun administration is referenced more frequently than infrastructure development. Since 2019, Ogun State has reportedly constructed or rehabilitated over 1,600 kilometres of roads connecting industrial corridors, rural communities and commercial centres. Among the major projects executed are the Epe-Ijebu Ode Expressway, Sagamu-Abeokuta Expressway, Sagamu-Iperu-Ode Remo-Sapade corridor, Ilishan-Iperu Road and the Ijebu-Ode-Epe dual carriageway. Township roads across Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, Odogbolu, Abeokuta, Ota and Ilaro also received extensive rehabilitation. For Ogun East, many of these projects carried direct economic significance. Improved road networks strengthened access to markets, eased transportation challenges and enhanced connectivity between Ogun and Lagos. Communities previously isolated by poor road infrastructure became more integrated into economic and social activities. The Gateway International Airport Effect Perhaps no single project defines the ambition of the Abiodun administration more than the Gateway International Airport located in Iperu-Ilishan within Ogun East Senatorial District. Commissioned on April 4, 2026, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the airport immediately became one of the administration’s most symbolic legacy projects. The commissioning ceremony attracted national political heavyweights including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Senate President Godswill Akpabio and several governors. For supporters of the governor, the airport represented far more than physical infrastructure. It symbolised Ogun State’s emergence as a strategic logistics and industrial hub. Manufacturers and businesses around Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode and adjoining industrial corridors now possess a closer aviation gateway outside the congestion associated with Lagos routes. The commissioning ceremony also featured the unveiling of Gateway Air, electric motorcycles, security vehicles and agricultural tractors — all reinforcing the administration’s broader development narrative. President Tinubu publicly praised the governor’s leadership during the event. “In less than seven years, you, Dapo Abiodun, have demonstrated commitment, vision and patriotism to grow Nigeria.” Former President Obasanjo similarly described the airport as a landmark achievement in Ogun State’s history. Importantly, the airport also fits into a broader transportation vision under the Abiodun administration — one that positioned Ogun among the few Nigerian states accessible through road, rail, air and water transportation systems. Economic Growth and Industrial Expansion Supporters of Governor Abiodun also point to the administration’s economic indicators. Ogun State’s Internally Generated Revenue reportedly rose from ₦52 billion in 2020 to nearly ₦192 billion in 2024, with projections approaching ₦250 billion. The state’s GDP was similarly said to have expanded from ₦2.9 trillion in 2021 to ₦7.3 trillion in 2024. In 2025, Ogun reportedly attracted over 70 percent of Nigeria’s Foreign Direct Investment inflow, further consolidating its reputation as one of the country’s foremost industrial destinations. Beyond statistics, the administration secured major investment commitments tied to industrial and logistics expansion. In 2022, Ogun State signed a $400 million Memorandum of Understanding with Arise Integrated Industrial Platform for the Olokola Free Trade Zone and the Remo Agro Processing Zone. African Industries Group pledged investments exceeding $500 million, while global manufacturing giant Foxconn reportedly expressed interest in establishing operations within the state. The Kajola Dry Port initiative equally formed part of the administration’s broader logistics strategy aimed at complementing the airport and strengthening trade movement between Ogun and Nigeria’s seaports. Social Programmes and Community Impact While infrastructure dominated public discourse, the administration also implemented programmes targeting education, healthcare and community development. The Women Development Centre in Ijebu-Ode was established to support entrepreneurship and vocational training for women. The Eriwe initiative extended support to fishing and riverside communities within Ogun Waterside and adjoining areas. Education reforms included the cancellation of school levies, introduction of the Ogun DigiClass programme and deployment of an Education Management Information System across local education authorities. Healthcare infrastructure also received attention, with approximately 140 primary healthcare centres reportedly renovated statewide. Traditional institutions within Ogun East publicly acknowledged aspects of the administration’s work. The Ijebu Traditional Council, during the lifetime of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, commended the administration’s infrastructure projects, governance reforms and the Obas and Chiefs Laws of Ogun State 2021. What the Primary Victory Truly Represented The APC primary itself became one of the strongest political validations of Governor Abiodun’s standing within Ogun East. Across Sagamu, Remo North, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun Waterside, Odogbolu, Ijebu East, Ijebu North, Ijebu North East and Ikenne, the governor secured commanding victories. Before the primary election, party leaders, lawmakers, councillors and local government chairmen openly endorsed his candidacy. The Ogun East APC Caucus also announced plans to collectively purchase his nomination form. To supporters, these endorsements reflected broad political consensus around his candidacy rather than mere elite alignment. Why Many Believe He Belongs in the Senate Supporters of Prince Dapo Abiodun argue that his transition from Government House to the Senate would give Ogun East a more influential voice at the federal level. First is executive experience. As governor, he supervised multi-billion-naira budgets, negotiated international investment agreements and coordinated projects requiring collaboration with federal institutions and foreign investors. Second is political access. His relationship with President Tinubu’s administration is viewed within APC circles as capable of translating into greater federal attention for Ogun East projects and infrastructure priorities. Third is continuity. Projects such as the Gateway International Airport, Kajola Dry Port, Olokola Free Trade Zone and industrial corridors within Ogun East may benefit from representation by someone already deeply familiar with their financing structures, implementation challenges and long-term economic objectives. Supporters also believe his background positions him to contribute meaningfully to legislative discussions around industrial policy, infrastructure financing, regional development and investment promotion. Beyond Politics, a Performance Argument Prince Dapo Abiodun’s victory in the APC Ogun East senatorial primary was not merely a routine political exercise. For many within the party, it was an endorsement of seven years defined by road construction, economic expansion, industrial growth, investment attraction and strategic infrastructure development. Across Ogun East, supporters point to roads rehabilitated, healthcare centres upgraded, industries attracted and an international airport commissioned within the district itself. Ultimately, the 2027 general election will determine whether the wider electorate shares that assessment. But within the APC, the message from the primary was unmistakable: many party members believe Prince Dapo Abiodun earned the ticket through performance, political influence and visible developmental impact delivered during his years in office. Akinmade is Special Adviser, Information and Strategy to Ogun State Governor.

Hundreds of members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday turned out to vote for governorship aspirant Abayomi Hunye during the party’s governorship primaries held at Tube Ward in Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State. The primary election at the ward was conducted peacefully, with Hunye arriving early to cast his vote before other party members and supporters participated in the exercise. Speaking with journalists shortly after voting, Hunye dismissed rumours circulating within the party that he had been disqualified or not cleared to contest in the primaries. According to him, the large turnout of supporters at his polling unit reflected his popularity and acceptance among party members across Ogun State. He stated that despite attempts to spread false information about his eligibility, supporters still came out in large numbers to demonstrate their loyalty and confidence in his candidacy. Reports from some other wards in the state alleged that supporters believed to be loyal to Hunye were chased away from voting centres. However, the governorship aspirant maintained that voting in his own ward remained peaceful and orderly, including for those perceived to support rival aspirants. Hunye appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun to ensure that all votes cast during the primaries are counted fairly and without bias. He also urged party leaders not to allow what he described as “enemies of democracy” to undermine the credibility of the primary process, insisting that party members should be allowed to freely choose their preferred candidate. The APC aspirant further reassured supporters that he remains fully in the race and urged the public to disregard rumours suggesting otherwise. Meanwhile, the campaign office of Hunye raised concerns over the arrest of one of his supporters, Mr. Segun Avoseh, during the APC governorship primary election at Maun Ward 1 in Ipokia Local Government Area. In a statement signed by the Abayomi Hunye Campaign Office, the campaign alleged that Avoseh, a card-carrying APC member and party agent, was arrested after resisting attempts to prevent supporters of Hunye from participating in the primary election. The statement further alleged that officers at a police station claimed to recognize only Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola as the sole governorship aspirant, leading to the continued detention of Avoseh. The campaign described the incident as a threat to fairness, neutrality, and democratic participation within the party and called on the Ogun State Commissioner of Police to investigate the circumstances surrounding the arrest. The campaign also demanded the immediate release of Avoseh if no lawful grounds exist for his detention, equal treatment for supporters of all aspirants, and protection of the integrity of the primary election process.

The Ogun State Government has inaugurated a cassava processing centre and a solar-powered borehole in Obafe Community as part of efforts to boost food production, agro-processing and rural development. Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Honorable Bolu Owotomo, during the inauguration, said the project was implemented under the Federal Government and Ogun State Government IFAD-assisted Value Chain Development Programme. Hon. Owotomo explained that the facility would serve four farmer groups with about sixty farmers and described it as the second major agricultural infrastructure delivered in the community within one year. He disclosed that more than sixteen thousand farmers have benefited from interventions under the Ogun State Economic Transformation Project, while over twelve thousand hectares of land have been cleared for cultivation in the last two years. The Commissioner added that farmers also enjoy subsidies on land clearing and agricultural inputs, alongside direct linkage to produce off-takers. According to him, the IFAD-assisted programme, operating in eight local government areas, has delivered sixteen cassava processing centres and fifty-five boreholes across farming communities in the state. Hon Owotomo assured residents that more processing centres, markets and solar-powered boreholes would be commissioned across other parts of Ogun State. In her remarks, the Acting State Coordinator of the programme, Mrs Abiola Sobukola, said the projects would reduce post-harvest losses, improve cassava value addition and provide clean water for processing and domestic use. Responding on behalf of beneficiaries, Mr Saubana Ojetola and Mrs Kikelomo Ogunsan thanked the state government for the support and promised to make proper use of the facilities.

The Ogun State Government has dismissed allegations by Gbenga Daniel over perceived or planned violence ahead of the Ogun East senatorial primaries, describing the claims as hypocritical, baseless and a desperate attempt to create unnecessary tension within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, in a statement on Sunday, said it was ironic that Daniel, whose tenure as governor was allegedly characterised by political violence, intimidation and thuggery, would now attempt to portray himself as a defender of peace and democratic order. Akinmade stated that Ogun people still remember the political climate during Daniel’s administration when opposition voices and dissenting interests were allegedly suppressed through strong-arm tactics and intimidation. He maintained that the administration of Governor Abiodun has, however, remained committed to peaceful democratic engagement, political tolerance and inclusiveness since assuming office in 2019. According to him, the state has continued to witness peaceful political activities, freer participation by opposition elements and a more open democratic environment devoid of harassment and politically-motivated violence. The governor’s aide accused Daniel of trying to manufacture tension ahead of the primaries because of fears over the outcome of the process, saying the violence narrative was merely an excuse to avoid what he described as an impending humiliating defeat at the polls. He said: “It is strange that someone whose political era was widely associated with violence and thuggery is now raising alarm over imaginary threats to peace under an administration that has been widely acknowledged for promoting political harmony and tolerance. “These allegations are clearly designed to heat up the polity, create suspicion and possibly discredit a process that may not serve certain personal political interests. It is also obvious that the violence alarm is being used as a convenient excuse to avoid a humiliating defeat in the primaries.” Akinmade assured party members and residents of the state that the Ogun East senatorial primaries would be peaceful, transparent and orderly, stressing that the APC leadership in the state remained committed to a credible democratic process. He added that no responsible government would sponsor violence within its own party structure after investing significantly in maintaining peace and stability across the state. The government urged political leaders and their supporters to embrace peace, avoid inflammatory comments and allow democracy to take its natural course. |

The Ogun State Government has disclosed that all persons admitted at the State Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, following the recent chemical inhalation incident in some schools within the town, have been discharged after receiving medical attention and being certified fit by health personnel. The Commissioner for Health, Tomi Coker, made this known during an engagement with parents, guardians and residents at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School on Saturday. She stated that the state government would deploy ambulance crews to all wards in Ijebu-Ode to ensure prompt emergency response. According to her, each ambulance would be staffed with a driver and a paramedic to respond swiftly to incidents in the area. Dr. Coker also disclosed that the government had established a medical response protocol to ensure that any patient taken to secondary health facilities and requiring advanced care would be immediately transferred to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital. “There were persons admitted at the Ijebu-Ode State Hospital and others at Ijebu-Ife who were affected by the methane emission. “Altogether, we had adults and children admitted, and I am glad to say that all have been discharged. They are hale and hearty. “Methane is a non-toxic gas; however, it competes with oxygen which our body and brain need to function properly, and that is why it is of concern to us. “In mild concentrations, it may not produce symptoms, but moderate exposure can cause fatigue, rapid heartbeat and breathing difficulties. “In severe cases, it could lead to convulsion or unconsciousness, but we thank God that none of the patients recorded severe symptoms in the last 24 hours,” she said. The commissioner urged residents not to panic in the event of any unusual occurrence, advising them to make use of the ministry’s emergency response line. She disclosed that district surveillance nurses, nursing officers and rapid response personnel had already been deployed to the community, while the ministry had also informed the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control about the incident. “We have an emergency call centre that operates daily. “If you smell, hear or notice anything suspicious, please alert us immediately so that our personnel can investigate. “We have environmental health officials, rapid response teams and adequate oxygen supply in our ambulances and health facilities across the state,” she added. Dr. Coker further revealed that the ministry would train teachers from public and private schools, while interested parents would also be trained as community first responders. She explained that emergency response procedures include promptly calling for help and protecting the respiratory system with a wet cloth where methane exposure is suspected. The commissioner added that toxicology tests would also be conducted on some of the affected children to determine the level of gas exposure. “So far, all the cases recorded have been mild or moderate, with no severe cases,” she stated. Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, disclosed that gas analysers had been installed around affected schools to monitor air quality in the environment. He said the government planned to expand the coverage of the analysers across schools in Ijebu-Ode, adding that experts from Olabisi Onabanjo University were collaborating with the ministry to interpret data collected from the devices. Oresanya further disclosed that health officers would be deployed to schools in the area beginning Monday. “We have been monitoring these analysers every hour over the past four weeks, especially around this school and other parts of Ijebu-Ode. “We are also collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Environment and research institutions to solve this challenge,” he said. Also speaking, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Abayomi Arigbabu, appealed to principals and teachers to help calm students and properly manage the situation. He also urged parents and residents to remain calm, assuring them that the state government would continue to prioritise the welfare and safety of students across the state. Arigbabu warned against the spread of false information capable of causing panic. “We had a situation yesterday in one of our schools in Abeokuta where someone entered the school premises and packed sand. Principals must remain vigilant. “I want to assure residents that the government will continue to prioritise the welfare of students and provide a safe learning environment. “With ambulances strategically positioned around the area, there is no need for panic. Residents should simply contact the emergency numbers whenever necessary,” he said. On his part, the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, disclosed that the command, alongside the School Protection Squad established by the Inspector-General of Police, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit and other specialised departments, had been deployed to secure schools and surrounding communities. He added that drones were already being used to survey and monitor the affected environment to ensure the safety of students and residents. |

The Ogun State Government has fired back at former governor and senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, over his recent criticism of Governor Dapo Abiodun and the All Progressives Congress consensus arrangement. In a statement issued by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Honorable Kayode Akinmade, the government described Daniel’s allegations as politically motivated and accused him of attacking the same consensus process that helped him secure the APC senatorial ticket in 2023. The government noted that Governor Abiodun had played a key role in ensuring party unity by persuading other aspirants to step down in support of Daniel’s emergence as senator. During a recent event in Ijebu Ode, Daniel had accused the Abiodun administration of neglecting Ijebuland, frustrating federal projects, and causing Ogun State to lose the proposed Dangote Refinery project. However, the state government dismissed the claims as false, insisting that the administration has completed several road projects and created an investor-friendly environment across the state. The government also rejected allegations that Governor Abiodun frustrated investments by the Dangote Group, pointing instead to ongoing expansion projects in Ogun State as evidence of investor confidence. The statement further accused Daniel of anti-party activities during the 2023 governorship election and claimed his political influence within the APC had declined. The Ogun State Government maintained that Governor Abiodun remains focused on governance and infrastructure development despite ongoing political criticism.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to restoring the relevance of traditional institutions in Nigeria’s governance structure, describing monarchs as indispensable partners in promoting peace, security, and grassroots development across the country. Tinubu stated this on Saturday during the final farewell and reception held in honour of the late Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona at the Dipo Dina Stadium. Represented by Dapo Abiodun, the President said the Renewed Hope Agenda of his administration had deliberately repositioned traditional rulers from ceremonial figures to active stakeholders in governance, conflict resolution, economic mobilisation, and nation-building. According to him, the Federal Government envisions a Nigeria where traditional institutions are recognised as critical partners in preserving cultural values, strengthening social harmony, and advancing grassroots development. “Our vision is clear — a Nigeria where traditional institutions are recognised as critical stakeholders in promoting peace, preserving values, strengthening harmony, and advancing grassroots development,” he said. Tinubu noted that traditional rulers possess indigenous intelligence, moral authority, and social legitimacy that modern institutions cannot easily replace, stressing that their roles remain vital in addressing contemporary national challenges. The President observed that while the 1963 Constitution accorded traditional institutions significant relevance within the governance structure, subsequent constitutional arrangements diminished their influence, weakening the synergy between government and grassroots leadership. He assured that his administration would continue to support constructive engagement aimed at assigning clearer constitutional responsibilities to traditional rulers through ongoing conversations at the National Assembly. “This is not about politics; it is about strengthening governance, deepening inclusion, and recognising an institution that has sustained social order for centuries,” he added. Tinubu further disclosed that the Federal Government had sustained strategic consultations with traditional and religious leaders through the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria on issues relating to national security, economic growth, communal peace, and social stability. He said the engagements had continued to strengthen trust between government and the people, while efforts were also being made to ensure traditional rulers were adequately supported to contribute meaningfully to national discourse and community leadership. The President charged monarchs across the country to remain at the forefront of peacebuilding and social stability amid prevailing security challenges. He urged royal fathers to make their palaces centres of wisdom, reconciliation, and conflict resolution, while also encouraging the strengthening of community-based security structures through intelligence gathering, early warning systems, and community vigilance. Tinubu also called on traditional rulers to guide youths against violence, extremism, drug abuse, and other social vices, emphasising that Nigeria’s cultural heritage should not be treated as relics of the past but as strategic assets for future development. The President commended the Oba Sikiru Adetona School of Governance for organising the lecture in honour of the late monarch, whom he described as a courageous, disciplined, and principled leader who ruled with wisdom, candour, and uncommon integrity. Speaking on the lecture theme, “Bridging the Gap Between Traditional Institutions and Modern Government,” Tinubu described the topic as timely and significant to Nigeria’s democratic evolution. “The theme speaks to one of the most important governance questions of our time — how to harmonise the authority of our ancestral institutions with the structures of constitutional democracy in advancing national progress,” he stated. In a keynote address, former President Olusegun Obasanjo described the late Awujale as a foremost traditional ruler whose influence transcended Ijebuland. Represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Housing and Managing Director of the Ogun State Property and Investment Corporation, Architect Abiodun Fari-Arole, Obasanjo said the late monarch was a close ally, a lover of his people, and a strong advocate of peace, justice, and fairness. He noted that Oba Adetona would be remembered for championing reforms in Ogun State’s Traditional and Obas Law, particularly the provision granting monarchs the right to determine how they should be buried after death. Also speaking during another lecture session titled “A Dialogue for a Stronger Future,” Sheikh Mustapha Bello stressed the importance of culture and traditional institutions in driving socio-economic development. According to him, culture defines the identity and history of a people and must therefore be accorded serious attention in governance and policy formulation. He maintained that traditional rulers should be actively consulted in the formulation and implementation of policies because they represent the true voice of the grassroots. Sheikh Bello added that although Nigeria operates a constitutional democracy, the country stands to benefit more if traditional institutions are fully integrated into governance structures. “Let there be specific roles for the Obas. They are deeply rooted in the traditions and culture of our people. Many of them are highly experienced, and their contributions can greatly assist government in formulating policies and initiatives that directly benefit the people,” he said.

Ogun State Government has denied reports claiming that Saudi airline operators rejected the Gateway International Airport, Iperu, for the transportation of pilgrims to Saudi Arabia for the 2026 Hajj exercise. In a statement by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Hon Kayode Akinmade, the government described the report as misleading and inaccurate. According to the statement, the relocation of the second batch of Ogun pilgrims from the Gateway International Airport to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos was caused by flight scheduling challenges involving Nigeria’s designated Hajj carrier, Max Air. The government explained that Saudi aviation authorities were unable to provide a landing slot for the airline within the required period, forcing the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON, to adjust the flight arrangements barely two weeks before takeoff. It stressed that the decision had nothing to do with safety concerns, poor infrastructure, or operational problems at the airport. The government noted that the first batch of pilgrims had earlier departed successfully from the airport without incident, describing the exercise as a major achievement for Ogun State’s aviation sector. It also maintained that the Gateway International Airport remains a fully certified international airport approved for Hajj operations by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority and other relevant agencies. The statement added that the airport is equipped with modern aviation facilities capable of handling large international aircraft. Ogun State Government therefore urged media organisations to verify information before publication, especially on issues concerning aviation and national infrastructure.

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to empowering the Arewa community through targeted capacity-building programmes aimed at enhancing their productivity and contribution to society. The governor gave the assurance on Wednesday while receiving members of the South West Arewa Community’s Renewed Hope Agenda for Asiwaju 2027, led by its Director-General, Alhaji Shehu Usman, during a courtesy visit to his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta. Commending the community for its peaceful coexistence with host communities, Abiodun emphasised the need to equip individuals with relevant skills to prevent them from being exploited for destabilising activities. “We will focus on ensuring that we provide human capital development for our Arewa brothers so they will not be used as tools for destruction. I assure you that whatever I can do as governor to support this initiative, I will do,” he said. Highlighting the dangers of youth idleness, the governor noted that meaningful engagement and access to opportunities are crucial in steering young people away from negative influences. “We must give people a sense of belonging and engage them on available opportunities—what they can do with their lives—because an idle mind is the devil’s workshop. That is why many youths become tools in the hands of dubious individuals due to idleness,” he added. Abiodun also expressed willingness to collaborate with the group in designing empowerment initiatives tailored to the needs of the community. “I will be happy to work with you to develop programmes that will help empower your people. You should identify what they can do, how they can be engaged, and how they can positively impact their lives,” he said. The governor further commended the group for its leadership role within the Arewa community in the South West, noting that such efforts help curb misinformation and foster better understanding among diverse groups.

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has called on aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State to respect local government zoning arrangements and embrace consensus-building as the party prepares for forthcoming elections. The governor made the appeal during a strategic meeting in Abeokuta with House of Representatives and House of Assembly aspirants, alongside party leaders from the state’s 20 local government areas. Addressing the gathering, Abiodun stressed that while many party members are qualified to contest, only one candidate can emerge for each position. He urged aspirants to prioritise party unity through dialogue and compromise rather than engage in divisive contests. He said zoning arrangements across local governments would serve as a guiding framework to promote fairness, equity, and inclusion within the party, adding that grassroots leaders are best positioned to assess aspirants and recommend suitable candidates. “I am not a dictator and I have no intention of imposing candidates,” the governor said, noting that decisions would be reached through consultations with stakeholders at the local level. Abiodun warned that contentious primaries often result in bitterness, financial strain, and internal divisions that could weaken the party’s electoral chances, adding that consensus-building would help strengthen cohesion ahead of the polls. To ease tensions, the governor pledged to refund nomination form fees to aspirants who do not secure party tickets. He also assured them of compensation and future opportunities within the party. He further disclosed that several aspirants who stepped down or aligned with party decisions have already been considered for government appointments, describing the move as a way to retain experienced members and discourage anti-party activities. Drawing from his political journey, Abiodun urged aspirants to remain patient and committed. “I started contesting in 1993 and only became governor in 2019. If you don’t get it today, you may get it tomorrow,” he said. He maintained that the incentives were not meant to induce loyalty but to appreciate commitment and strengthen internal cohesion. Party elders, including Kola Ogunjobi, Olu Agemo, Adekunle Adesina, Gbenga Kaka, and Iyabo Apampa, commended the initiative, describing it as a pragmatic approach to managing internal competition and rewarding loyalty. Observers say the move underscores the APC’s strategy in Ogun State to manage internal contestation through consultation, consensus, and strategic appointments as it seeks to maintain unity ahead of the elections. |
