The commissioning ceremony, attracted government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, market women, transport operators, artisans and residents who gathered to celebrate what many described as a new phase of infrastructural development in the area. For many residents, the occasion represented more than just the commissioning of roads, as it marked the fulfilment of a long-standing aspiration and the end of years of hardship caused by the poor condition of the road network. Speaking at the event, the Chairman of Ijebu-Ode Local Government, Hon. Dare Alebiosu, described the projects as another significant milestone in the infrastructural transformation of Ogun State. He noted that the roads were not merely transportation corridors, but critical economic arteries that connected communities, thus, facilitating commerce, enhance mobility and would also promote socio-economic growth. Earlier, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. According to him, the roads were executed in line with approved engineering standards and equipped with modern drainage systems and road furniture to ensure safety, durability and long-term serviceability. Reacting to the new feat of achievement by the State government, a commercial motorcyclist, Mr. Tajudeen Sanni, expressed appreciation to the government, stating that the reconstruction had brought immense relief after years of frustration. “Transporting passengers through this route used to be a nightmare, especially during the rainy season. Flooding and bad sections of the road discouraged *many people from using it. Today, movement is smoother, safer, and faster,” he said. Similarly, a commercial driver operating within the metropolis, Mr. Adeniji Ayinde, noted that vehicle maintenance costs had reduced significantly since the completion of the project. He commended the government . Also, a trader, Mrs. Ayike Adeaga, observed that beyond improving transportation, the roads have enhanced the aesthetics and image of Ijebu-Ode, making the town more attractive to visitors, investors, and businesses. Market traders along the corridor also shared similar views. Mrs. Funke Adebanjo, who has operated a shop along the Stadium Road axis for more than two decades, said the reconstruction had already impacted her business positively by improving accessibility and increasing customer traffic. The roads had served as strategic links, connecting residential neighbourhoods, commercial centres, educational institutions, worship centres, sporting facilities and other critical public infrastructure. Their reconstruction therefore aligned with the Ogun State Government’s broader developmental agenda aimed at improving the quality of life of citizens through sustainable infrastructure development, just as It further underscored the administration’s resolve to bridge infrastructure gaps, improve connectivity and create an enabling environment for economic growth and community development across Ogun State.

*Abiodun Rejects Blame for Dangote Refinery Exit, Unveils Progress on Port, Oil Projects* Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has dismissed allegations linking him to the relocation of the Dangote Refinery from Ogun State to Lagos, insisting that the decision was taken before he assumed office, while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the proposed Deep Sea Port project in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area. The governor also disclosed that oil exploration and drilling activities have commenced in Eba, Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, as part of efforts to position Ogun as an oil-producing state. Governor Abiodun made the remarks during the commissioning of the six-kilometre Stadium–Luba–Tam Balogun Road in Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area. “We are working tirelessly on our port project. The Deep Sea Port is on course, and Ogun State will have one of the deepest and longest ports in Sub-Saharan Africa, if not the entire continent. “It will boast the longest berth in Sub-Saharan Africa. Very soon, we will unveil full details of the project,” he said. The governor recalled his campaign promise to make Ogun an oil-producing state, noting that the state had always possessed significant oil deposits that remained untapped for years. “During my campaign, I promised that Ogun State would become an oil-producing state under my administration. The oil we are now working to establish in commercial quantities has always been here. Previous administrations had the opportunity, but it is under my tenure that meaningful progress is being made,” he stated. Addressing the controversy surrounding the Dangote Refinery project, Abiodun said those who managed the affairs of the state at the time should bear responsibility for its relocation. “A few days ago, I saw reports on social media claiming that just as Dapo Abiodun allowed the refinery project to leave Ogun State, he has also abandoned the Deep Sea Port project. “First, was I the governor when the refinery was moved to Lagos? If anything, I did everything within my capacity to retain the refinery in Ogun State, but others, through their irresponsibility, allowed the project to slip away,” he said. The governor highlighted several landmark projects undertaken by his administration in Ogun East Senatorial District, including the federal takeover of Tai Solarin University of Education, the development of the Dry Port, ongoing oil exploration activities, and the reconstruction of the Sagamu–Ijebu-Ode Expressway. He disclosed that more than 26 roads had been completed in Ijebu-Ode since his administration declared an emergency on road infrastructure in the area, while 12 additional road projects are currently under construction. Governor Abiodun urged residents to take ownership of the newly commissioned road and refrain from dumping refuse in drainage channels, noting that the project was funded with taxpayers’ money. He expressed confidence that the road would boost economic activities and improve the quality of life of residents. In his remarks, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ade Akinsanya, said the road project, which features reinforced concrete drains, kerbs and road markings, reflects the administration’s commitment to providing durable infrastructure across the state. He noted that the road would improve connectivity within Ijebu-Ode and adjoining communities while stimulating economic activities in the area. The Chief Economic Adviser and Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Dapo Okubadejo, described Governor Abiodun as a silent achiever whose developmental initiatives, including the Deep Sea Port and Dry Port projects, are transforming Ogun State’s economic landscape. The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has pledged that the state will deliver 95 per cent of its votes to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections, declaring that the President deserves a second term in office in recognition of the far-reaching economic reforms initiated by his administration. Governor Abiodun gave the assurance on Friday during a strategic meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held at the Presidential Lodge, Ibara, Abeokuta. The governor noted that the reforms introduced by President Tinubu have helped to reposition the nation's economy and lay a solid foundation for sustainable growth and development. He also commended members of the APC in Ogun State for conducting peaceful and crisis-free primary elections, saying the state had distinguished itself from others through the orderly and transparent process. According to him, the success of the primaries was made possible by the high level of unity, maturity, and discipline displayed by party faithful. "Our primary election was inclusive, transparent, and fair. This was made possible by the commitment and mutual trust among our leaders. Such a process has never happened in the history of our state. "We sat down, discussed, and chose our candidates without rancour. It underscores the exemplary political maturity that exists in Ogun State. Though many people contested, only one person could emerge. Those who aspired, contested, and later stepped down in the interest of party unity are the unsung heroes of this process," he said. Speaking on the choice of a running mate for the APC governorship candidate, Senator Solomon Adeola, ahead of the 2027 general elections, Governor Abiodun disclosed that the party had unanimously zoned the position of deputy governor to Ogun East Senatorial District, specifically the Ijebu axis, considering that the governorship candidate is from Ogun West Senatorial District. "We recognise the need to commence political activities in earnest, and only one key position remains to be filled—the office of the Deputy Governor. We therefore consulted widely with party leaders and agreed that the position should go to Ogun East. "Since I have emerged as the senatorial candidate for Ogun East and I am from Remoland, it was decided that the Ijebu people should produce the Deputy Governor. "We have also substantially agreed on the area within Ijebuland from which the candidate should emerge, and that is the Ijebu-Ode Federal Constituency. That was one of the major reasons for today's meeting," he stated. The governor congratulated the people of Ogun West Senatorial District on producing the party's governorship candidate for the forthcoming election, noting that his administration had broken the over 50-year jinx of the district not producing a governorship candidate since the creation of the state. Governor Abiodun described the development as a major milestone in the state's political history and a demonstration of the APC's commitment to fairness, inclusiveness, and equitable power-sharing among the three senatorial districts. He further stated that his administration would deploy technology-driven solutions to tackle banditry and kidnapping while strengthening security across the state. He stressed that the people deserve a robust security architecture capable of protecting lives and property, particularly children who represent the future of society. The governor noted that, having invested heavily in infrastructure development across the state, his administration would now place greater emphasis on human capital development and social investment programmes aimed at cushioning the effects of the current economic challenges on residents. He reaffirmed his administration's commitment to improving the welfare of the people and ensuring that the dividends of democracy are felt across all sectors of the state. In his welcome address, the State Chairman of the APC, Chief Yemi Sanusi, also commended party members for their exemplary conduct during and after the primaries. In a sermon titled “Remember You Have a Short Time,” Pastor Abolaji Olufemi of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church reminded the congregation of the brevity of life and the importance of fulfilling God’s purpose. The cleric urged people to make meaningful impacts with the gifts and opportunities entrusted to them by God, stressing that only those who surrender their lives to God can fully accomplish their divine assignments. *From Sporting Arena to Creative Hotspot: How MKO Abiola Sports Arena Became Abeokuta’s New Content Creation Destination* Once known primarily as a venue for football matches, athletics competitions and major sporting events, the newly transformed MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Kuto, Abeokuta, is gradually assuming a new identity. Beyond sports, the facility has emerged as one of the most sought-after locations for photography, videography and digital content creation in Ogun State. The remarkable transformation of the arena followed extensive renovation and beautification works carried out by the Ogun State Government before the 22nd National Sports Festival, Gateway Games 2025. The upgrades turned what was once an ageing sports facility into a modern sporting complex equipped with world-class infrastructure and visually appealing aesthetics. Today, the arena attracts a different kind of crowd. On weekends and even weekdays, photographers, fashion enthusiasts, social media influencers, content creators, newly engaged couples and families can be seen moving around the facility, taking advantage of its picturesque environment. The lush green turf, colourful tartan tracks, modern architectural designs, upgraded seating areas, digital installations and beautifully landscaped surroundings have combined to create a setting that rivals some of the most photogenic public spaces in the country. What was designed as a sporting venue has inadvertently become an outdoor studio for creative expression. For many young content creators in Abeokuta, the arena offers something previously unavailable within the city, a clean, contemporary and visually attractive backdrop capable of elevating the quality of photographs and videos without the need to travel to Lagos or other major urban centres. The transformation has also changed public perception of sports infrastructure. Rather than serving only athletes and sports enthusiasts, the arena is now functioning as a community space where recreation, tourism and creativity intersect. Visitors come not necessarily to watch sporting activities but to experience the ambience created by the extensive facelift. The renovation project introduced significant improvements including upgraded sporting facilities, a modern tartan track, enhanced spectator areas, a digital scoreboard, new courts and an Olympic-size swimming pool, positioning the complex among the most modern sports facilities in Nigeria. Interestingly, the growing popularity of the arena among photographers and content creators is generating additional economic opportunities. Professional photographers now use the venue for pre-wedding shoots, fashion campaigns and commercial projects. Vendors, transport operators and small businesses around Kuto are also benefitting from the increased foot traffic generated by visitors who come solely to create content. For many residents, the arena has become a symbol of what purposeful infrastructure development can achieve. The facility is no longer just a venue for sporting competitions; it has evolved into a landmark that showcases the changing face of Abeokuta and Ogun State. As the memories of the National Sports Festival gradually fade, the legacy of the event continues to live on through the MKO Abiola Sports Arena. Every photograph taken, every video recorded and every piece of content shared online serves as a reminder that the arena has become more than a sports complex, it is now a cultural and creative destination attracting a new generation of visitors eager to capture its beauty. What began as a renovation project for a sporting festival has unexpectedly produced one of Abeokuta’s most vibrant public spaces, proving that great infrastructure can inspire not only athletic excellence but also creativity, tourism and community engagement.

HND–BSc Top-Up Programmes Must Not Be Abolished in Nigeria By IGE OLALEKAN BABATUNDE LIGHTHOUSE MEDIA PROMOTION The recent discussions surrounding the proposed abolition of HND–BSc Top-Up programmes in Nigeria have generated serious concerns among students, education stakeholders, parents, and professionals across the country. While reforms in the education sector are necessary, abolishing the HND conversion pathway without providing a stronger and practical alternative may deepen educational inequality rather than solve it. For decades, Nigeria has battled with the painful dichotomy between Higher National Diploma (HND) holders and Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree holders. Polytechnic graduates, despite their technical competence and practical exposure, continue to face discrimination in employment, promotion, salary structure, and career advancement. The HND–BSc Top-Up programme emerged as one of the few bridges helping thousands of Nigerians overcome this imbalance. Therefore, rather than abolishing the programme, the Federal Government and educational authorities should focus on improving, regulating, and strengthening it to meet global academic standards. Countries across the world already operate similar academic pathways successfully, and Nigeria should learn from these models instead of shutting down opportunities for its citizens. Lessons from Developed Countries In the United Kingdom, HND Top-Up programmes are widely recognized and respected. Universities such as Coventry University, Middlesex University, University of Portsmouth, and University of Sunderland allow HND graduates to proceed directly into the final year of bachelor’s degree programmes. The UK educational system understands that technical and vocational education is essential for industrial growth and national development. The result has been enormous. Britain has successfully produced skilled graduates with both theoretical knowledge and practical competence. Their industries benefit from technically trained manpower, while students from working-class backgrounds enjoy flexible and affordable access to university education. Canada also operates a flexible system that accommodates diploma and HND holders through university transfer and degree-completion programmes. Institutions such as Humber Polytechnic, Seneca Polytechnic, and Thompson Rivers University provide pathways for technical graduates to upgrade academically without restarting from the beginning. This system has strengthened Canada’s workforce development and improved access to higher education. Ireland equally recognizes HND progression programmes through institutions such as Technological University Dublin and National College of Ireland. Their educational system encourages lifelong learning and academic progression, especially for students with practical and vocational backgrounds. Australia, Germany, New Zealand, and the United Arab Emirates also maintain flexible academic transition systems for technical graduates. Germany, in particular, has become one of the world’s strongest industrial nations largely because it respects vocational and technical education. Universities of Applied Sciences in Germany integrate practical training with academic advancement, producing highly skilled professionals for engineering, manufacturing, and technology sectors. These countries do not see technical education as inferior. Instead, they use it as a tool for national productivity, innovation, industrialization, and economic growth. Why Nigeria Should Retain the HND Top-Up Programme 1. It Promotes Educational Inclusion Many Nigerians who attend polytechnics do so because of financial limitations, admission challenges, or interest in technical education. Abolishing Top-Up programmes will close one of the few opportunities available for academic progression among polytechnic graduates. Education should create opportunities, not barriers. 2. It Reduces Unemployment and Poverty Thousands of HND holders use conversion programmes to improve their qualifications, compete fairly in the labour market, and secure better employment opportunities. Removing the programme may worsen unemployment and discourage young Nigerians from pursuing technical education. 3. It Supports National Development Polytechnic graduates are among the most practical and industry-ready professionals in Nigeria. They contribute significantly to engineering, ICT, media production, business administration, technology, agriculture, and entrepreneurship. Countries that invest in technical education grow faster industrially. Nigeria cannot claim to pursue industrialization while weakening the academic advancement of technical graduates. 4. It Encourages Lifelong Learning Top-Up programmes provide opportunities for workers and professionals to continue their education while employed. Many programmes are flexible, part-time, weekend-based, or online, helping individuals balance work and education. This system improves human capital development and national productivity. 5. It Helps Bridge the HND–BSc Dichotomy The discrimination against HND holders has existed for too long. Even the Federal Government recently acknowledged the need to abolish the HND–BSc dichotomy and empower polytechnics to award degree qualifications. If government truly seeks equality in education, then pathways that help bridge the gap should be strengthened rather than abolished. Countries Operating Similar Academic Progression Systems The following countries currently operate systems similar to HND Top-Up or diploma-to-degree progression programmes: •United Kingdom •Canada •Ireland •Australia •Germany •New Zealand •United Arab Emirates •Malaysia •South Africa •Singapore •Netherlands •United States •Scotland •Wales These nations understand that vocational education and university education should complement one another, not compete against each other. The Economic Value to Nigeria Retaining and improving Top-Up programmes can benefit Nigeria economically in several ways: •Increased skilled manpower •Reduction in graduate unemployment •Stronger technical and industrial workforce •Better entrepreneurship development •Increased innovation and productivity •Improved international educational competitiveness •Higher revenue generation for institutions •Reduction in brain drain Nigeria’s economy needs technically skilled graduates now more than ever. Polytechnic education remains one of the strongest tools for economic transformation. The Way Forward Rather than abolishing HND Top-Up programmes, the government should: •Standardize the curriculum nationwide •Ensure strict accreditation and quality control •Eliminate unapproved and illegal programmes •Upgrade polytechnics to degree-awarding institutions •Promote equal recognition between HND and BSc qualifications •Strengthen partnerships between universities and polytechnics •Improve funding for technical education Abolition without adequate alternatives may create more educational hardship and widen the gap between privileged and less privileged students. IN SUMMARY Nigeria must stop treating technical education as inferior. The future of modern economies depends heavily on practical knowledge, innovation, technology, and vocational competence. Countries like the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Ireland, and Australia have embraced flexible academic progression systems because they understand the importance of inclusive education and workforce development. The HND–BSc Top-Up programme should not be abolished. Instead, it should be reformed, strengthened, and properly regulated to meet global standards. Nigeria needs more opportunities for its youth, not fewer. Education should build bridges, not walls. |
*From Pride to Neglect: Bushes Swallow Toilets Built for National Sports Festival at MKO Abiola Sports Arena* What was once built to serve thousands of athletes and spectators during Nigeria’s National Sports Festival now stands abandoned, overgrown and nearly forgotten. Behind the imposing structures of the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, the public toilet facilities constructed for one of the country’s biggest sporting events have been overtaken by thick bushes, dirt and decay, a stark symbol of neglect after the applause and celebrations faded. A visit to the arena reveals a disturbing scene. Tall weeds now surround the toilet blocks, partially concealing entrances that once welcomed athletes, officials and sports lovers from across the country. Broken doors hang loosely from rusted hinges. Windows are shattered. The smell of dampness and waste hangs heavily in the air. In some sections, the buildings have become hideouts for rodents and reptiles, while discarded plastic bottles, food packs and refuse litter the surroundings. Residents and sports enthusiasts who frequent the arena say the situation has worsened over time, with little or no maintenance carried out since the festival ended. “It is painful to see,” said a local football coach who trains young athletes near the complex. “During the sports festival, everywhere was cleaned and beautiful because government officials were coming. But after the event, everything was abandoned.” The National Sports Festival has long been celebrated as Nigeria’s version of the Olympics, a platform meant to promote unity, youth development and sporting excellence. Massive public funds are usually committed to renovating stadiums, hostels and support facilities ahead of the games. But the current state of the toilet facilities at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena raises fresh concerns about the culture of abandoned public infrastructure in Nigeria. Observers say the neglect reflects a broader problem where projects receive attention only during major events or political visits, with little planning for long-term maintenance. Sports fans visiting the arena expressed disappointment that basic sanitary facilities have been left to deteriorate despite the arena remaining an important public space. “How can a national facility look like this?” asked another visitor. “People still come here every day to exercise and watch matches. Toilets are essential.” Beyond aesthetics, public health experts warn that neglected sanitary facilities can pose environmental and health risks, especially in places that attract large crowds. The overgrown surroundings also raise safety concerns, as isolated and abandoned structures can become shelters for criminal activity or dangerous animals. For many Nigerians, the scene is sadly familiar: expensive public projects commissioned with fanfare, only to be consumed by neglect months or years later. Yet, some residents believe the facilities can still be restored if authorities act quickly. “The structures are still there,” a trader near the arena said. “If government clears the bushes, repairs the toilets and puts maintenance workers in place, people will use them again.” As athletes continue to train on the fields and young talents chase dreams within the arena, the abandoned toilets stand quietly in the background, a reminder that infrastructure without maintenance eventually becomes a monument to waste. The question many are now asking is simple: after the games ended, who was supposed to keep these facilities alive?
