By Otunba Adejare Rewane Adegbenro - Security expert and peace advocate There is no denying that Nigeria continues to grapple with serious security challenges. Across different regions, the threat has taken multiple forms—banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, and communal clashes. These challenges are often discussed along ethnic and religious lines. While such clashes exist, this narrow framing obscures deeper and more complex drivers of insecurity. One critical but under-reported factor fueling violence in parts of Nigeria is illegal mining. Globally, history has shown that wherever mineral resources—especially gold—are exploited illegally, violence often follows. From parts of the Sahel to Central Africa, unregulated mining sites have become magnets for criminal networks, arms trafficking, and insurgent financing. Nigeria is no exception. In several flashpoints of insecurity, illegal mining has created economic incentives for armed groups, who destabilise communities, displace residents, and exploit chaos to continue their activities. It is also important to state clearly that Nigeria’s current security challenges did not begin with the present administration. Insecurity has evolved over decades, shaped by governance gaps, porous borders, climate pressure, and underdevelopment in remote areas. What is different today, however, is the scale of institutional rethinking and strategic recalibration underway within Nigeria’s security architecture. Under President Bola Tinubu, deliberate efforts have been made to strengthen coordination at the highest levels. The reshuffling of the service chiefs, alongside the appointment of a former Chief of Defence Staff as substantive Minister of Defence, reflects a move toward institutional memory, operational coherence, and strategic continuity. For the first time in a long while, all arms of the security services are reportedly working in tandem—an alignment that has improved inter-agency cooperation and reduced duplication of effort. At the centre of this evolving framework is the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, whose role has gone beyond domestic coordination to include active engagement in international security collaboration. Nigeria is increasingly plugged into global counter-terrorism networks, particularly with the United States and other strategic partners. These engagements involve intelligence sharing, capacity building, and technical support—many aspects of which, by necessity, cannot be disclosed publicly. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s foreign engagements further underscore this approach. His recent diplomatic and security-focused visits, including engagements in Türkiye, were not ceremonial but targeted at deepening defence cooperation with countries that have confronted prolonged insurgent threats. Such partnerships offer Nigeria access to advanced intelligence systems, military training, and counter-insurgency expertise that strengthen long-term security capacity. On the domestic front, plans to reinforce community-based security mechanisms, including forest and ranger units, highlight the recognition that local knowledge is indispensable. Communities understand the terrain—forests, informal routes, and hidden enclaves—better than anyone else. When properly regulated, vetted, and supervised, these local structures can significantly enhance intelligence gathering and early warning systems. That said, no security initiative is without risks. Community-based systems, like all human institutions, can be compromised by coercion or infiltration. This reality reinforces the need for strict oversight, accountability, and intelligence vetting. It does not, however, negate the value of the broader strategy when implemented responsibly. Operational challenges persist. Vast, underdeveloped terrains, poor infrastructure, and the threat of improvised explosive devices continue to test the military’s response capacity. Senior security officials have acknowledged that response times in remote areas can be delayed, not from indifference, but from logistical constraints. Even so, security forces have recorded measurable successes in dislodging bandit and terrorist enclaves—progress that often receives less attention than isolated attacks. This moment, therefore, is not one for cynical disengagement or relentless delegitimisation of state efforts. It is a period that calls for vigilance, constructive criticism, and national support. Citizens play a crucial role by cooperating with security agencies, particularly through the provision of timely local intelligence. Counter-terrorism thrives on information, and communities are often the first to notice unusual movements or threats. While democratic scrutiny remains essential, persistent sensationalism and the rush to undermine ongoing security operations can weaken morale and distort public understanding. Nigerians must recognise that many critical actions in national security are necessarily confidential and cannot be litigated in newspaper headlines. Nigeria’s security challenges are real, but so are the efforts to confront them. The repositioning of the country’s security architecture has begun, and continuity is vital for these reforms to yield maximum gains. A stable and secure Nigeria is fundamental to the administration’s broader economic vision, including the pursuit of a one-trillion-dollar economy. Security is the foundation upon which investment, growth, and national prosperity rest—and it is clear that this reality is not lost on the current leadership. The fight to stem security challenges is not merely a military campaign; it is a societal one. It demands unity, patience, responsible discourse, and a shared commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s future. Security is not a private concern; it is a collective national responsibility. It demands that Nigerians—regardless of faith, ethnicity, or political leaning—stand united in support of policies aimed at restoring peace and stability. At the same time, the Tinubu administration must decisively improve the welfare, equipment, and morale of our security forces, while according traditional institutions clearly defined constitutional roles that place them at the forefront of grassroots intelligence, mediation, and decision-making. Only through unity, shared responsibility, and institutional strengthening can Nigeria secure the peace it urgently needs and deserves.

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has cautioned against attempts to create division among residents of Tongeji Island and across the state over ongoing oil exploration activities in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area. The governor gave the warning while commissioning the Abeokuta–Obalende and Osinubi New Roads in Ijebu-Ode, where he clarified that the oil drilling exercise is being carried out by the Federal Government through the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), and not by the Ogun State Government. Abiodun explained that although hydrocarbon deposits have been identified in parts of Ogun Waterside, including Tongeji Island, their commercial viability is yet to be established. He dismissed claims that funds meant for oil exploration had been diverted, describing such allegations as misleading and politically motivated. According to the governor, the discovery followed reports of crude-like substances seeping from the ground, which prompted technical investigations by the NNPCL. “After conducting preliminary tests, they informed me that oil had been discovered in Ogun State. However, drilling is necessary to confirm whether it exists in commercial quantity, and that process was approved by Mr. President,” Abiodun said. He added that security around the drilling area has been significantly strengthened, noting that a Naval Base has already been established near the oil well to safeguard national assets. The governor expressed concern over what he described as misrepresentation of his comments in some sections of the media, which he said sparked unnecessary controversy. “At no time did I say that commercial drilling had commenced at Tongeji Island. What we have are promising indications, not confirmation of commercial quantity,” he stressed. Abiodun further revealed that a Naval post has also been established at Tongeji Island, with approval granted by the Chief of Naval Staff for a Forward Operating Base to reinforce Nigeria’s territorial presence in the area. Commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the governor said the revival of the Olokola Deep Sea Port project would significantly boost Ogun State’s economic prospects, adding that the President has directed visible progress on the project within the next year. On infrastructure development, Abiodun reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving road networks across the state, stating that performance — not rhetoric — remains the government’s response to criticism. He disclosed that more than 20 township roads have been reconstructed in Ijebu-Ode, including Awujale Road, Ijebu-Ode–Epe–Mojoda Road, Molipa–Fusigboye Road, Stadium–Luba–Gateway Annex Road, Imoru Road, Tam-Balogun Road, Osinubi Road, and several others, with additional projects currently ongoing. Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ade Akinsanya, said the completed roads were executed to enhance connectivity, reduce travel time, and stimulate local commerce. Chairman of Ijebu-Ode Local Government, Hon. Dare Alebiosu, noted that the improved road network has boosted economic activities and strengthened public confidence in government. Also speaking, the lawmaker representing Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu North-East and Odogbolu Federal Constituency, Barr. Femi Ogunbanwo, praised the governor’s consistent investment in infrastructure across Ijebu land. Market leaders, represented by the Otun Akile Iyaloja of Ijebu-Ode, Mrs. Kikelomo Olufunmi, said the roads would ease movement of goods and enhance trading activities. Traditional rulers and community leaders at the event commended the governor for delivering on his promises, describing the projects as impactful and timely for the development of the area.

Ogun State Government and the World Bank Group have jointly invested over 5 billion naira in women-focused empowerment and livelihood initiatives over the past six years, Governor Dapo Abiodun has disclosed. The governor made this known on Wednesday while receiving a delegation from the World Bank Group, led by its Vice President, Ms. Galina Vincelette, at his office in Abeokuta. Governor Abiodun said the investment was deployed through the World Bank–supported Nigeria for Women Project (NFWP) and the state’s domesticated empowerment scheme, Oko’Owo Dapo, which was established after the success of the initial programme. According to him, the Nigeria for Women Project, implemented through Women Affinity Groups (WAGs), has significantly transformed the socio-economic lives of women across the state. “The programme has deepened financial inclusion, strengthened social cohesion, and equipped women with leadership and basic accounting skills. “About ₦3 billion was disbursed under the World Bank-supported initiative, while the Ogun State Government complemented it with another ₦2 billion. In total, roughly ₦5 billion has been invested in this impactful livelihood programme,” the governor said. He added that the state government subsequently launched Oko’Owo Dapo to sustain and expand the gains of the initiative, noting that the programme has so far empowered about 55,000 women across Ogun State. Governor Abiodun also highlighted the achievements of OGCARES — the Ogun State COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus Programme — describing it as a critical intervention that strengthened household resilience and supported food system recovery during and after the pandemic. On the Ogun State Economic Transformation Project (OGSTEP), the governor said the programme has recorded measurable progress in skills acquisition, agricultural productivity, and land administration reforms. “We have significantly increased the speed of issuing Certificates of Occupancy. “Under the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), which focuses on connecting farms to markets, we are currently upgrading about 209 kilometres of rural roads. Improved rural access reduces transportation costs and enhances agricultural productivity,” he stated. The governor further disclosed that Ogun State would soon commission its Electricity Distribution Company, as part of deliberate efforts to improve power supply and stimulate industrial growth. He said the state is pursuing multiple Independent Power Projects (IPPs) and has already established the Ogun State Electricity Board, following recent constitutional amendments empowering states to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity. “Power remains the biggest enabler of economic activities. We are working with strategic partners to generate and distribute electricity within the state. “We are also on the verge of constructing mini-grids across Ogun State to meet our growing energy needs,” Abiodun said. Speaking earlier, the World Bank Group Vice President, Ms. Galina Vincelette, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to supporting Ogun State and Nigeria in addressing key development challenges. She said the Bank would continue to promote public-private solutions, particularly in the electricity sector, while strengthening investments in human capital development. Also speaking, the World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Mr. Matthew Verghis, disclosed that the Bank is preparing a new Country Partnership Framework for Nigeria, with strong emphasis on job creation. “Creating jobs is the most sustainable way to reduce poverty and raise incomes. Our existing programmes, including the Nigeria for Women Project, will continue. “Nigeria currently has a $17 billion World Bank portfolio, one of the largest globally, and our support remains strong,” Verghis said. Mrs Abiodun added that rubella infection during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth and severe birth defects known as Congenital Rubella Syndrome. Citing statistics from the World Health Organization, the First Lady noted that although global measles-related deaths have declined by 88 per cent since 2000, an estimated 95,000 people mostly children lost their lives to the disease last year. She described the campaign as a collective commitment to safeguarding the future of children, stressing that vaccination remains one of the safest, most effective and affordable public health interventions available worldwide. In her remarks, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, said measles and rubella continue to rank among the leading causes of childhood mortality globally and pose serious risks to pregnant women. She urged school administrators and teachers to cooperate fully with health officials, stressing that prevention remains better than cure. Following the suspension of the selection process for a new Awujale of Ijebuland by the Ogun State Government, a group of residents on Monday staged a peaceful protest across parts of Ijebu-Ode in support of the government’s decision. The protesters, under the banner of Ijebu Sons and Daughters and Ijebu-Ode Progressive Youths, marched through major roads in the town carrying placards with inscriptions such as: “Awujale stool is not for sale,” “Governor Abiodun, save Ijebuland from crisis,” “We want the best prince as Awujale,” and “Let there be a free and fair selection process.” The procession converged at the Ijebu-Ode Local Government Secretariat, where the Chairman, Hon. Dare Adebiosu, addressed the crowd. Hon. Adebiosu assured the protesters that the Ogun State Government has no preferred candidate, explaining that the suspension was aimed solely at ensuring strict adherence to due process. “The government is not interested in who eventually emerges as Awujale,” he said. “The decision was taken to ensure fairness and transparency in the selection process.” He commended the protesters for their peaceful conduct and assured them that the process would resume, leading to the emergence of an Awujale who reflects the will of the people. Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Alhaji Babatunde Salami said the demonstration was intended to send a clear message to the kingmakers to act responsibly. “The Awujale stool is highly respected in Yorubaland, Nigeria, and even beyond,” he said. “This is not a position that should be treated casually. We want the kingmakers to choose the right person for our land.” Another protester, Mr. Yusuf Adetilewa, expressed dissatisfaction with what he described as rumours of bribery and corruption surrounding the selection process. “We are here to insist that due process must be followed,” he said. “We do not want moneybags to hijack the process and render it meaningless.” Mrs. Morolayo Oyesefo also called for equal treatment of all contestants, noting that holding a traditional title should not be used as a basis for disqualification. “We have heard allegations of bribery involving both contestants and those conducting the selection,” she said. “The government must punish anyone found guilty. We do not want the process compromised, as this could lead to unnecessary litigation.” Meanwhile, the Alagemos in Ijebuland have thrown their support behind the actions of the Ogun State Government aimed at ensuring a seamless selection process. Speaking after a meeting held at the palace of the Ija-Oloko of Imosan, the Alapini Awopa General of Ogun State, High Chief Tajudeen Adekunle Muili, expressed confidence in Governor Dapo Abiodun’s handling of the matter. “I do not believe the suspension was done for the governor to impose his will,” Chief Muili said. “Rather, it is to ensure that due process is followed. We appreciate the steps taken so far and only urge that the process be expedited.” Also speaking, the Gbosa and Baale of Imosan, High Chief Wahab Samsideen Adebayo, said the suspension would allow kingmakers to properly conclude the process by giving all contestants equal opportunity. “The Funsengbuwa Ruling House has submitted the list of candidates,” he said. “The kingmakers should now sit down and complete the process transparently.” “All we want is an Awujale who will promote peace and progress in Ijebuland, not one who will oppress the people,” he added

He noted that the newly inaugurated road formed part of over 1,600 kilometres of roads constructed by his administration, adding that work would continue on major routes including the Atan–Lusada–Agbara Road. Earlier, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr Ade Akinsanya, had said that the three-kilometre road would improve access to the MKO Abiola Trade Fair Complex and surrounding communities. Community leaders and transport operators praised the project, describing it as a major boost to mobility and economic activities in Abeokuta.

Ogun State Government has dismissed as blackmail and reckless defamation allegations by a Labour Party chieftain, Mr. Arabambi Abayomi, that the administration of Dapo Abiodun is selling government-owned housing assets, including the Ibara Government Reserved Area (GRA). The government described Abayomi as an attention-seeking rabble-rouser with a penchant for blackmail, alleging that his claims were motivated by resentment after he was kept at arm’s length by the administration. In a statement in Abeokuta, the Special Adviser on Media and Strategy to the Governor, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, said the allegations were misleading and deliberately aimed at distorting the state’s ongoing urban renewal programme. Akinmade said it was ironic for Abayomi to portray the revitalisation of GRAs across the state as the sale of public assets, noting that the initiative had received commendation from eminent Nigerians. He recalled that former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the Alake of Egbaland, Adedotun Gbadebo, and the General Overseer of Citadel Global Community Church, Tunde Bakare, had all praised the projects, which are transforming GRAs into modern smart cities. “The fact is well known that Ogun State’s urban renewal programme for Government Reserved Areas involves transforming dilapidated houses and shanties into modern, vibrant smart cities,” Akinmade said. He explained that the programme covers GRAs in Ibara and Idi-Aba (Abeokuta), Igbeba (Ijebu-Ode), Ilaro, and Ota, and includes the rehabilitation of old structures, the construction of new housing units, and the provision of modern infrastructure such as roads, drainage, water supply, and electricity. According to him, the project spans over 100 hectares, with plans for 500 housing units in Ibara and 100 units in Idi-Aba, adding that more than 150 houses have already been completed. Akinmade further alleged that Abayomi had previously organised several press conferences praising Governor Abiodun in an attempt to ingratiate himself with the government, but became hostile after what he described as the discovery of his “multiple faces” and his subsequent sidelining. “GRAs are the exclusive preserve of government. What responsible governments do is clear shanties and replace them with modern developments, which is exactly what the Abiodun administration is doing,” he said. He accused the Labour Party chieftain of habitually seeking relevance by attacking governments that declined to patronise him and urged the public to disregard his claims. “Instead of focusing on rebuilding his party, he is busy chasing shadows. We know him very well, and nothing he says can be taken seriously by this government,” Akinmade said. |

......as Blogger Just Adetoun Faces Cybercrime Charges Ogun State Government has confirmed the remand of a medical doctor accused of issuing a fraudulent medical report to aid popular blogger Adetoun Onajobi, widely known as Just Adetoun, in evading police arrest. The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Oluwasina Ogungbade disclosed in a statement that the Ogun State Police Command had also filed a six-count charge against the blogger, who is currently on the run, following a petition submitted by the state government. According to Mr Ogungbade, Adetoun, an online personality with a large following, has a history of alleged cyberbullying, harassment and the use of offensive language against individuals on social media. The controversy intensified after an incident involving world-renowned boxing champion Anthony Joshua in Ogun State. Adetoun allegedly posted videos online claiming there were no ambulance services in the state and further accused Governor Dapo Abiodun of being in Ghana, engaging in social activities, instead of attending to the boxer’s welfare. The Attorney General described the claims as false, malicious and misleading, stressing that Ogun State operates multiple state-owned and state-supported ambulance services. He warned that such misinformation could endanger public safety by discouraging residents from seeking emergency medical help. Mr Ogungbade said the police formally invited Adetoun for questioning on January 5, 2026, after issuing a notice on January 2, but she failed to honour the invitation and allegedly went into hiding. While evading the police, the blogger reportedly released another video claiming she was ill and unable to present herself for questioning. He noted that Her lawyer later submitted a letter to the police, attaching a medical report from a Lagos-based doctor indicating that she was medically indisposed. However, police investigations revealed that the medical report was allegedly forged. The doctor who issued it reportedly confessed that he neither met nor examined Adetoun, contradicting the contents of the report. The doctor has since been arrested, charged and remanded in prison for alleged fraudulent medical documentation and obstruction of justice. Authorities say investigations are ongoing to identify other possible accomplices, while Adetoun remains at large. Mr Ogungbade questioned why the blogger, who had earlier claimed to possess evidence to support her allegations, failed to present such evidence to law enforcement or publish it publicly. He added that the alleged use of a forged medical report further weakened her credibility. The statement also accused Adetoun of previous misconduct, including allegedly bullying a woman cleaning an estate in Lagos and unlawfully filming and sharing images of the woman’s underage child on social media.

Ogun State Government has expanded its poultry production capacity with the completion of a 5,000-birds-per-day processing facility at the Ajegunle Farm Settlement in Odeda Local Government Area, increasing the state’s annual processing capacity by an additional 1.3 million birds. The Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Bolu Owotomo, disclosed this during a tour of agricultural facilities at Ajegunle Farm Settlement, Eweje Farm Institute, and Odo Fufu in Odeda and Yewa South Local Government Areas. The tour formed part of the first phase of an assessment of ongoing and completed agricultural projects across the state under the Ogun State Economic Transformation Project (OGSTEP). Hon. Owotomo said the new processing plant would significantly reduce poultry importation while strengthening local production. He noted that Ajegunle Farm Settlement, designated as a poultry hub, currently hosts about 400 resident farmers and has continued to attract private investment following the provision of complementary infrastructure such as blast freezers, cold rooms, waste processing facilities, a warehouse with fitted offices, and 20,000-capacity poultry pens. According to the commissioner, a private investor has recently completed a 13,000-capacity poultry pen at the settlement, underscoring its growing economic importance. He revealed that the state government, through OGSTEP, has delivered 28 agricultural projects across Ogun State in the last two years. Other intervention programmes, including the Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP), OG-CARES, and the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ), he added, have also played key roles in revitalising the agricultural sector. “These projects are designed to increase food production, improve farmers’ livelihoods, and reduce post-harvest losses in Nigeria, which are currently estimated at ₦3.5 trillion annually,” Owotomo said. Highlighting the need for increased local poultry production, the commissioner noted that Nigeria’s per capital chicken consumption ranges between 1.7kg and 2kg, compared to 13kg in Ghana, 36kg in South Africa, and 46kg in Brazil. He added that despite importing about 70 per cent of its poultry needs, Nigeria still lags behind in consumption. At the Eweje Farm Institute, where 10 poultry pens with a combined capacity of 100,000 birds and five four-bedroom residential buildings have been constructed, Hon Owotomo assured that sustained investment in agricultural infrastructure would further position Ogun State as Nigeria’s leading poultry hub. At Odo Fufu in Ilaro, Yewa South Local Government Area, the commissioner said the newly completed cassava processing facility would boost value addition, reduce waste, and improve farmers’ incomes. On sustainability, Owotomo stressed the importance of farmer ownership, effective monitoring, and Public-Private Partnerships to ensure long-term viability of the projects. “We are encouraging farmers to take ownership of these facilities, while the Ministry will ensure strong monitoring and evaluation alongside Public-Private Partnerships to guarantee sustainability,” he said. In separate remarks, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture and Food Security, Dr Angel Adelaja, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs Kehinde Jokotoye, expressed confidence that the projects would significantly improve productivity and strengthen Ogun State’s economy. Also speaking, the Principal of Odeda Training Institute, Mr Ademola Benco, and the Chairman of Ajegunle Farm Settlement, Mr Rotimi Sogunle, described the projects as unprecedented, noting that their full utilisation would further enhance agricultural production in Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole. The commissioner was accompanied on the tour by the Chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Waliu Owode, as well as directors from the Ministry.
