Politics / Group Petitions President Tinubu Over Allegations Of Misconduct, Fraud Of MD, Ru by Ainaolusegun: 9:47pm On Oct 31, 2023
A group of concerned citizens of Nigeria has submitted a petition to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, calling for the immediate suspension and investigation of the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency, Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad, over a litany of allegations, including gross misconduct, monumental fraud, and misappropriation of public funds.

In the Petition, Mr. Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad was alleged to have engaged in gross misconduct and unethical behavior during his tenure. Furthermore, it claims that he has been involved in misappropriating public funds intended for electrification projects, with allegations reaching as high as 1.5 billion naira and 750 million dollars from the World Bank and the African Development Bank (AfDB).

The most damning accusation against Mr. Ahmad is the looting of the agency's resources for personal gain, allegedly at the expense of delivering essential electrification services to underserved communities. He is also accused of diverting public funds into private accounts through several staff members who acted as conduits for these illicit financial transactions.

This diversion of public funds as alleged has purportedly been carried out through multiple bank accounts, leading to substantial financial losses for the agency and the Nigerian people. The existence of over 37 different accounts linked to Mr. Ahmad, which seem to contradict his last asset declaration with the Code of Conduct Bureau, has also raised suspicions.

Under Mr. Ahmad's leadership, the Rural Electrification Agency received significant financial support from the World Bank and AfDB, amounting to over $550 million. However, the promised benefits of this support, aimed at providing energy access to impoverished communities, have reportedly not materialized.

The petition further highlights the alleged involvement of Olaniyi Netufo, the Executive Director of Corporate Services, in private business activities while serving as a public officer. Documents attached to the petition suggest that Netufo holds a majority shareholding of 40% in a private limited liability company called NECOL (Nigeria) Ltd, raising questions about potential conflicts of interest and ethical concerns.

Despite these grave allegations, Mr. Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad has remained in his position, with claims of being untouchable due to purported backing by top government officials, including the National Security Adviser Mal. Nuhu Ribadu, the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Kashim Shettima, and the Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila.

In a recent development, Mr. Salihijo Ahmad was accused of influencing the Deputy Spokesperson of the Federal House of Representatives with a substantial sum to issue a false press release stating that he had been cleared by the House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts and other committees, including the House Committee on Anti-Corruption. However, it was revealed that Mr. Ahmad had refused to honor the Anti-Corruption Committee's invitation for investigation and had requested a postponement.

The petition concludes with three key demands from the concerned citizens:

1. The immediate suspension and investigation of Managing Director Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad by relevant anti-corruption agencies to verify the allegations against him.

2. The removal of any government officials found to be complicit in protecting Mr. Ahmad from facing accountability for his alleged actions.

3. A comprehensive and independent forensic audit of the Rural Electrification Agency to uncover the full extent of financial mismanagement and fraud.

Sports / Isiaka In The Saddle by Ainaolusegun: 9:53am On Oct 14, 2023
ISIAKA IN THE SADDLE

Biodun Alabi

I attended the swearing-in of new commissioners and special advisers into the new Ogun state executive council.

I took a deep look at the list of names of the appointees ....my interest was to see what was on offer for the sports ministry.

Nothing struck me except resignation to the fact I found no name that is familiar with sports, so I buried my worries......and hoped that whoever is named for the sports ministry could 'disappoint' the general belief that only someone, who has been 'around' sports, should man the office.

It's the same situation at the federal level as we await what magic senator Enoh could conjure as sports minister as he's also a 'strange' name to sports.

But time and seasons have sufficiently proved in Nigeria that only names don't bring competence to a job......inner capacity, basic and street intelligence and exposure do.

Former Ogun state commissioner for sports, chief Bukola Olopade, had only his secondary school football exploits and being an ardent follower of Nigerian and global sports from his youthful days, as his only credential when he came to office......he added, of course, his university education and sojourn abroad which afforded him the needed education and exposure for the job.

He still stands tall, till today, as the sports commissioner with the highest number of garlands of feats in the administration of sports in the state.

The new man, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka may not have the same background, but could have something in his sleeves to deliver on the job......it will be unfair to write him off on the basis of his NAME.

He, however, must deal with him becoming another scapegoat in the history of sports governance in the state......for a very simple point.

The point is - sports has not been a profound agenda of this administration, it's been without a clear and well wrought policy......it has no interpretational values in the current scheme of the Ogun Political Economy.

The administration has highlighted strong character in many other areas of governance for which it's been applauded on many fronts, no doubt.

With Hon. Wasiu Isiaka coming in to meet this, it's a win or burst for him.

The Ogun State Government has called on Haulage Consultants and Agents across its 20 local government areas to show more commitment to the revenue generation drive of the present administration to avoid sanctions.

This warning was given by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Olu. Ola. Aikulola, who described his meeting with Corporate Haulage Revenue Consultants/Agents in Abeokuta as instructive and compelling in view of the present realities.

Aikulola noted that revenue is the blood of the government without which investment in health, education, security infrastructure, among others cannot be realised, pointing out that corporate and road haulage collection cannot be taken for granted.

Lamenting the amount realised so far in 2023 from haulage, the Permanent Secretary said that it is a far cry from expectation, just as he added that revenue collection is an important benchmark for rating government agency's performance.

He, therefore, warned that any haulage Consultant and Agent whose performance is below expectation would be sanctioned accordingly, assuring that government would on its part remain committed to paying commission to them as and when due.

"The government is not comfortable with the revenue performance. What is coming in is too far from what is expected. There will be sanctions after this meeting. If we review your performance and discovered that you are not performing, we will remove your name. We want a change of narrative," Aikulola stated.

"Earlier, Director, Geological Services in the Ministry, Mr. Lekan Eniolawun, said the Consultants at the inception of their engagement had been informed of regular meeting with the management of the Ministry to afford them the opportunity of sharing their challenges on the field while a way forward is charted, adding that it would also help the performance review of each company.

Speaking on behalf of the Consultants, Mr. Kayode Sijuade, who appreciated the Permanent Secretary and his team for providing the needed leadership, said a regular enforcement reminder to companies on their payment would be helpful in boosting revenue.
