Mariam Sobogun As part of expanding its frontiers of knowledge and global exchange, Department of Islamic Studies of Crescent University, Abeokuta, recently hosted scholars from continents of Europe, America, Asia and Africa to dissect history of Islam as being framed by Westerners and their media. An academic seminar organised in honour of an amalgam of international delegation named Oasis Initiative, explored the dynamic history of Islam across Europe and Africa, revealing a pattern of growth rooted in solutions, not force. In his seminar lecture titled "The History of Islam in Early Medieval Europe", His Eminence, Dr Umar Faruq Abdullah led discussions to trace how the Umayyads extended their influence into parts of Europe, opening pathways for cultural and economic exchange. He explained that from Andalus in Muslim Spain and Portugal, Islamic governance fostered coexistence and intellectual advancement, to Septimania in South-Eastern France. A key historical insight highlighted was how Islam spread by addressing societal needs. In Sicily, Islam expanded through problems only Muslims could solve within the context of the Shariah. These practical solutions, grounded in Islamic principles enhanced living conditions and contributed to the gradual acceptance of Islam. As parts of Northern Europe faced economic decline, many turned toward Muslim regions for trade, drawn by systems known for fairness, structured markets, and ethical dealings. In West Africa, despite vast natural resources, internal divisions limited growth. Muslim traders and scholars introduced cooperative trading communities, fostered alliances through intermarriage, and established systems aligned with Islamic principles. This created stability and interconnected networks that supported both economic and social development. These foundations later resonated in reform movements such as that of Usman dan Fodio, who advanced Islamic governance and scholarship in the region. The seminar reinforced a historical pattern where Islam expanded through governance, trade, knowledge, and social reform, shaping societies across continents. The visitation of members of OASIS Initiative was led by His Excellency Sharif Shaykh Muhammad Jaylani Haydara and other distinguished members. In his appreciation remarks, Dean of College of Arts, Management and Social Sciences (CASMAS), Emeritus Prof. Kamaldeen Balogun, who played the host assured that Crescent University would continue to provide a platform for engaging with these rich legacies of faith, history, and global connection. Prof. Balogun said since history "has been perverted and given another coloration, importance of history of religion is very important" in its proper perspective. He emphasized the need for a paradigm shift by seeking knowledge which he described as the only password. Others present at the programme are the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Crescent University, Abeokuta, Prof. Rasaki Kareem, Head of Department of Accounting,Prof. Tunji Siyanbola and Head of Department of Islamic Studies, Dr Idris Oni

By Adejare Rewane Adegbenro No nation thrives in isolation. In an increasingly interconnected world, a country’s global relevance is shaped not only by the strength of its domestic policies but by the depth of its diplomacy—how effectively its leaders engage, negotiate, and position their nation within the global order. Since assuming office on May 29, 2023, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has embarked on a series of international engagements, visiting countries such as France, Turkey, and Brazil. His latest stop, the United Kingdom, is perhaps the most symbolically significant. It marks the first state visit by a Nigerian leader to Britain in 37 years—and notably, the second time a democratically elected Nigerian president has been hosted by the British monarchy. Predictably, critics have dismissed the visit as another round of diplomatic pageantry, far removed from the daily struggles of ordinary Nigerians. But such a view is not only reductive; it overlooks the strategic undercurrents that define modern statecraft. Nigeria remains one of Britain’s most important partners in Africa. Trade between both nations exceeds £8 billion last year, with Nigeria exporting crude oil, gas, and agricultural products such as coffee and tea. This alone underscores the significance of the visit. Far from being a mere photo opportunity, it represents a calculated effort to deepen economic ties, attract foreign investment, and reposition Nigeria within a competitive global marketplace. More crucially, the visit came at a time when Nigeria’s security challenges demand urgent and sustained international collaboration. From insurgency in the North-East to the proliferation of transnational criminal networks, the country’s security architecture is under strain. The United Kingdom has long been a strategic ally, supporting Nigeria through military training programmes, advisory roles in counterinsurgency operations, and capacity building within the armed forces. A high-level engagement of this nature—particularly one that includes key figures such as the minister of Defence, Christopher Musa offers an opportunity to strengthen these frameworks. It opens the door to enhanced intelligence sharing on terrorism, improved tracking of illicit financial flows, and more coordinated responses to organised crime. While King Charles III does not shape government policy, royal endorsement carries symbolic weight, reinforcing diplomatic goodwill and continuity in bilateral relations. Equally significant is President Tinubu’s engagement with Keir Starmer, the British Prime Minister. This meeting held the potential to translate symbolism into substance—expanding cooperation in security, trade, and institutional reform. Diplomacy, after all, operates on both tangible outcomes and intangible signals. Being hosted by the British monarch enhances Nigeria’s global image, projecting stability and credibility at a time when investor confidence is critical. It also strengthens Nigeria’s voice within the Commonwealth, a platform that can be leveraged to mobilise broader international support in addressing its security challenges. To dismiss such a visit as unnecessary is to misunderstand the mechanics of global influence. In today’s world, strategic relationships are not built overnight; they are cultivated through sustained engagement, symbolism, and negotiation. The real test, however, lies beyond the ceremonies and state banquets. The value of this visit will ultimately be measured by how effectively its diplomatic capital is converted into concrete outcomes—stronger security cooperation, increased investment, and tangible improvements in the lives of Nigerians. What may appear ceremonial at first glance is, in reality, a quiet exercise in power—one that, if properly leveraged, could yield significant dividends for Nigeria’s future. Ogun State Government has announced a major boost for retirees, with benefits rising to as much as 280 percent under a new pension arrangement. Governor Dapo Abiodun made this known during the presentation of cheques to retirees, saying the new Additional Pension Benefit initiative will significantly improve welfare in the civil and public service. Under the scheme, retirees will receive between 116 and 280 percent of their Total Annual Emoluments as a one-off payment. This exceeds the federal benchmark of 100 percent and is expected to benefit up to 80 percent of retiring workers. The governor explained that the new structure eliminates the need to withdraw part of pension savings as lump sum, allowing full contributions to remain with Pension Fund Administrators and generate higher monthly pensions. He added that the initiative also ensures prompt payment of benefits, addressing past delays associated with gratuities. Officials say the state has already paid billions of naira to clear pension backlogs and restore confidence in the system. Labour leaders and pension stakeholders have described the initiative as a groundbreaking reform that could serve as a model for other states. In the first phase of implementation, over one hundred retirees received cheques ranging from seventeen million to twenty-two million naira. The government says the reform is part of broader efforts to guarantee financial security and improved living standards for retirees.
