Obaseki in a statement described her as the best fit for the job, expressing confidence that she will leverage her wealth of experience and network to drive positive change in the profession and the global built environment sector.

World Habitat Day 2023: Obaseki charges Edo people on preservation of environment for sustainable future

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has charged citizens and residents of the State on protection and preservation of the environment for a sustainable future.

Obaseki gave the charge when he received the Commissioner for Urban and Physical Planning, Isoken Omo, members of the Ministry, environmentalists and school children, who embarked on an 8.5km walk to mark the 2023 World Habitat Day.

The walk kicked off from the Edo State Secretariat, Sapele Road, through Ring Road, to Oba Market, Siluko Road, Oliya Market, Akenzua, Airport Road, and terminated at the Government House, Benin City.

Receiving them after the walk at the Government House, the governor charged parents to plant trees for their children to celebrate their birthdays, noting that if one million children plant trees in a year, the State would have successfully planted one million trees.

He said, “Every child must plant a tree every year to commemorate their birthdays. If we have one million children under the age of 10 to 12 years old in Edo State and if they plant one tree each, we can boast of one million trees a year.

“We need to clean, green and restore the environment to how God has created it in the first place or else we, our children, and those that will succeed us on earth will suffer from our negligence.”

Obaseki continued: “I want to congratulate all that have been able to complete the 8.5km walk, as the significance of the walk is to let people know how important and significant the habitat is to mankind. We must make the habitat and environment sustainable for us.
“We all have seen what is going on, particularly with climate change. There is no greater evidence to show or let us know that we can't take our habitat and environment for granted. With the negligence of our land and environment, you see what we are going through in terms of flood, erosion, and landslide. We need to do something urgently to save it or very soon it will be difficult for us to live in. Our continued deforestation will cause our rainforest to become savannah.
“What we are doing is not a joke but a very serious issue. We have taken the issue of the environment for granted for too long and we are losing it fast. As a government, we need support to green the environment, we will continue to give the charge but need our community, professionals in the built environment, teachers, and government workers among others to help us raise the alarm that we can't continue to operate this way.”

He added, “Our responsibility is to fight back, to clean and green the environment by doing the right thing. We are very concerned that is why we are working on our 30-year Urban and Regional Master Plan which will be legislated into law beyond this administration, showing them the roadmap on what they should do to protect the environment, habitat and failure makes it unlawful.”
On her part, the Commissioner for Housing, Urban and Physical Planning, Isoken Omo, said, “Edo is known as a clean place that needs to be protected as any negligence of the environment will have a negative impact and effect on the people.”
She added, “World Habitat Day is celebrated every first Monday in October, and it's a time to pause and look at our habitat if this is where we want to be. We need to do the right thing to keep the habitat to enable us to live comfortably with it. What we do with our habitat is important and we need to collaborate to make the habitat habitable.”

CAF Confederations Cup: Obaseki hails Bendel Insurance’s gallantry, assures continuous support

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has commended the exceptional performance and remarkable display of courage and determination by Bendel Insurance Football Club during their weekend clash with RS Berkane of Morocco in the second preliminary round of the 2023/24 CAF Confederation Cup.

The governor, who noted that the team played excellently throughout the 90 minutes on the pitch, stated that with such quality of play, resilience and teamwork, the team has the potential for more incredible achievements and triumph, reassuring continuous support to the team to realise their fullest potential.

Obaseki noted, “I commend the exceptional and remarkable performance of Bendel Insurance FC during their last weekend clash with RS Berkane of Morocco in the second preliminary round of the 2023/24 CAF Confederation Cup.

“The team, despite their 1-0 loss to the home team, played excellently well, dominated the game and created numerous scoring opportunities throughout their 90 minutes of the fascinating and tension-filled match but was unable to convert the opportunities into goals.

“You have continued to make us proud and we are proud of your achievements so far having just returned from relegation. I urge you to keep your chins up and gear up for an impressive run at the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) which has just commenced.”

He added, “As a government, we will continue to support you, providing you with the necessary resources and other incentives to thrive and realise your fullest potential, even as we call on our dear football-loving Edo people to continue to stand with our darling team, Bendel Insurance.”

Obaseki inaugurates 34 SSAs, 152 SAs, charges on grassroots devt

[/i]The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Monday, inaugurated 34 Senior Special Assistants (SSAs) and 152 Special Assistants (SAs) in five local government areas in Edo South Senatorial District of the State, with a charge to be the bearers of truth and complement the government’s efforts at driving development in the grassroots.

Obaseki said the appointees were selected from Ikpoba-Okha, Oredo, Ovia South West, Ovia North East, and Orhionmwon local government councils in Edo South Senatorial District, noting that appointees from other two local government areas that make up the senatorial district will be announced soon as the party finalises on the selection of credible members that are worthy of the appointments.

The governor disclosed that, “Out of the seven local government areas from Edo South, we are appointing SSAs and SAs from five local government areas. The reason is that we are trying to foster unity and inclusiveness in our party so that all are given the opportunity to participate. Those local governments we have not accepted their list are those local governments where work is still in progress. We are insisting that the leaders must agree and confirm that the people who are nominated are people who are faithful, worked for the party, and have the capacity to work for the governor.

“One of the key criteria for appointment is that you must be resident in that local government as you can’t be a political appointee in absentia. Gone are the days when you get an appointment and go abroad, it can't happen again. You have to be resident in your local government. You need to be there to know what is going on so as to help us develop the local government and State.”

He further noted, “You all are my appointees, you work for me not the local government. We are working in all the wards in Edo State; we have teachers, health workers, and many others as we work together to develop the State. We want people on the ground to communicate to the people what we are doing and also want feedback from them.

“This is not a fancy appointment but involves real work this time around. You have SSAs who you work with and will coordinate your activities and give me a monthly report of what is going on. You must show me your contacts and relationship with the people and show me the medium of communication to ensure a real impact in all the wards.

“You all belong to our party as your appointment is based on the fact that you belong to our party and must show commitment towards that. You must promote the interest of the party. The people have decided to follow our party and it showed at the last local government election in the State.”

According to him, “I am passionate about the poorest of the poor in the State, let me know those who can’t feed and eat in your various local governments to enable the government to send palliative measures to them as we must care for our people. We must know those children that can't go to school. We must know the state of our schools. We pay civil servants to work and want you to be our eyes to know those who are really working.”

The governor added, “We want unity in our party because we are in charge and the party to beat. Election is coming and politicians will throw all sorts of lies to discredit our party. Your role is to put things in the right perspective as you are the bearers of the truth of what the government is doing and make sure you are there to correct any lies they put out there. You must counter all the lies they put out on social media. I have faith in you to do well and accomplish the goal set out for you.”

On his part, the Edo State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr Anthony Aziegbemi, while congratulating the newly inaugurated appointees, charged, “You have been appointed at a very crucial time as we head into critical and serious political times starting from next month. It's not a mistake that you are inaugurated at this time from five local government areas as you have your work cut out for you.

“If you were SSAs or SAs in the last dispensation, the work is different this time around because there is a lot of work to do for the party. We know that you are ready to help the party to win the governorship election next year. The interest of the party is towards the 21st of September next year.”

Other guests at the inauguration ceremony include Secretary to Edo State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq.; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon. Osaigbovo Iyoha; Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA), Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, and other party leaders and members across the State’s 18 local government areas.

Obaseki, others eulogise Senator Alimikhena’s wife

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Friday, led top government functionaries and other dignitaries to the funeral mass of the wife of former Senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, Francis Alimikhena, Monica, who died at the age of 69 years.

Speaking to journalists after the funeral mass, the governor described the late Mrs. Monica Emesomia Alimikhena as a very quiet, committed and prayerful woman, who was very devoted to the development of her community and the State.

Other guests at the event were the Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu; Sen. Adams Oshiomhole; former Governor of Edo State, Prof. Osariemeh Osunbor; former Deputy Governor of Edo State, Chief Mike Ogiadomhe and the Chairman of Edo State Peoples Democratic Party, Anthony Aziegbemi, among others.

Obaseki further said, “I had the privilege of interacting with her in her lifetime. She was a very lovely woman. During my campaign in 2016 and also as a Governor, I visited her house in Abuja and will not forget the good and lovely meal she used to prepare for me.

“She was very quiet, committed and a prayerful lady who always saw progress and always prayed for her husband, the State and all those who interacted with her in her lifetime. We would miss her but we thank God for her life and what she represented and pray for God to rest her soul in peace.”

The governor also added, “It’s a difficult time for our Senator Francis Alimikhena. I have been with him and knew when the challenges of her health started and we need to pray for him and pray the Lord strengthen him for he is in a difficult time especially now.”

In his sermon, the Bishop of Auchi Diocese of the Catholic Church of Nigeria, Archbishop Gabriel Dunia, urged mothers to emulate the life of late Alimikhena, who he said was fervent in prayers, guiding her family till her last days.

“Our mummy prayed for all those who came across her in life and as mother, that should be our duty. Mothers should pray for the family to enable the society to raise good leaders who will lead and govern our people, the State and nation. I encourage all of us to participate in the governance of the State and serve the people truthfully irrespective of their personal interests.

“Our mummy led her family faithfully through difficult times and life challenges and we all have many lessons to learn from her life.”

The son of the deceased, John Alimikhena, thanked the governor, his entourage and other guests for gracing the occasion and supporting the family at the time of their grief.

World Tourism Day 2023 Celebration: Edo leveraging rich culture, tourism potential to boost revenue, drive economy

The Edo State Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Tourism, Dr. Uyi Oduwa-Malaka, has said the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration has made tourism a major backbone of his reforms, leveraging the State’s rich arts, culture and tourism potential to boost its revenue and drive economic development and growth.

The Commissioner said this while delivering her speech at Ogba Zoological Garden and Parks, venue for the 2023 World Tourism Day celebration, with the theme, “Tourism and Green Investment.”

Noting that the government has prioritised the sector on the back of its enormous economic benefits, the Commissioner said the governor set up a Tourism Agency for effective operationalisation of the tourism sector.

She said, “In Edo, we must lay the praise for our tourism development and budding success at the deserving feet of Governor Godwin Obaseki, who to begin with, made culture and tourism a major backbone of his seven-point agenda. He soon enough started to unfold his vision by building the Sir Victor Uwaifo Creative hub, the Museum of West African Arts (MOWAA), among other tourism infrastructure.

"We have a very engaging Heritage Policy process in place; engaging stakeholders in matters involving, identification, preservation and protection of our tangible and intangible heritage.”

Oduwa-Malaka further said the Obaseki-led administration is working with stakeholders to drive traffic to its heritage sites in the State, adding, “We are partnering with the hospitality industry, security outfits, and film producers. In the last one month, we have been involved in shooting two major films and I understand that about four others are incubating.”

In his keynote address, a tourism expert, Mallam Alasa Hanson Ikhelowa, who applauded the state government, acknowledged the deliberate and well-coordinated steps to develop the tourism sites in the State, noting, "Many of the tangible assets that abound in different States have not been fully developed. So also the intangible assets should be worked on to turn them into a money spinning venture.”

World Tourism Day: Obaseki commits to boosting tourism receipts with new investment in culture, arts sector

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the State has attracted investments in the arts and culture industry, which will not only boost tourism receipts but recalibrate the State’s position as a hub for creativity and artistic endeavours.
The governor said this in a statement to mark the 2023 World Tourism Day (WTD) by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) on September 27.

The governor said that the investment in the state’s art and culture scene include the building of world class museums and a landmark archaeological project in the city centre, which will bolster the State’s capacity to attract international tourists and also provide opportunity for youths to learn and revive the State’s rich cultural heritage.

According to him, “While efforts are ongoing to develop the Benin Cultural District to be a thriving hub for arts and culture, we have attracted investment for the Museum of West African Arts (MOWAA) as well as an archaeological project that seeks to unearth materials that help us better understand and appreciate our cultural heritage.

“The construction of MOWAA Institute is ongoing and we have other elements of the Benin Cultural districts coming to fruition, showing an unwavering commitment to transform the State into a space that promotes and nurtures its tourism assets.

“To mark this year’s celebration, the state government has lined up a number of activities such as a stakeholders’ engagement on the validation of the Edo State Heritage Protection and Promotion Policy and other programmes to drive this year’s theme, Tourism and Green Investments. There will also be guided tours and workshops organised in collaboration with experts to mark this year’s World Tourism Day celebration in the State.

The governor further noted on this year’s WTD, which is marked yearly by UNWTO and its Member-States, across the world, including Nigeria, that, “For us, building on the envious cultural heritage of our forebears is sacrosanct. Not only are we committed to promoting them, we are keen on building a new consciousness that would see to the revival of the ideas and concepts that influenced the immaculate artefacts that are celebrated across the world today. These can only be achieved through increased investment in tourism and preserving our cultural heritage.”

CAF Confederation Cup: Confident Bendel Insurance FC lands in Casablanca ahead of clash with RS Berkane

The Bendel Insurance Football Club of Benin, on Tuesday afternoon arrived in Casablanca, the capital city of Morocco ahead of their second leg continental clash with Renaissance De Sportive Berkane in the second preliminary round of the 2023/24 CAF Confederation Cup.

The crucial CAF engagement is scheduled to hold on Friday, September 29 in Berkane, Morocco.

The Bendel Insurance FC team flew into the Arab City aboard a Royal Air Maroc flight, which touched down at the Mohammed V. International Airport, Casablanca at about 1pm, Nigerian Time.

The team departed the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, Nigeria on Tuesday morning, and arrived safely into the warm embrace of Emmanuel Ovye Oliver, the protocol assistant and some other officials of the Nigeria Embassy in Morocco who were on ground at the airport to receive them.

Recall that Bendel Insurance FC were forced to a 2-2 draw by RS Berkane at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium, in Benin City, on Saturday, September 16.

The Benin Arsenal coach, Monday Odigie, who is leading the team, said they are confident to defend their pride and dignity in Morocco in the return leg clash.

The stand-in captain of Insurance FC, Amas Obasogie, said: “Knowing the honour that awaits us if we beat our opponent to qualify for the group stage, we are going to fight for everything in the field of play to go home victorious. We made two mistakes in Benin and will not want a repeat.

“We are facing a very strong opponent who have been champions twice in a space of three years but we will not allow their intimidation to affect our play. They should expect a good fight from us the way they also fought in Benin.”

While Obasogie noted, “Above all, we want to fight to win for our State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, who has been wonderful in giving his all in sponsorship and motivation that has taken us this far both in the domestic league and at the continental level.”

Edo revs up effort to improve security on highway

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has restated his administration’s commitment to the safety and security of the people, assuring sustained efforts to ensure the safety of motorists and commuters on the highway.

The governor, who was represented by the State Commissioner for Public Security and Safety, Kingsley Uwagbale, stated this when he inspected the clearing of both sides of the Benin-Lagos expressway by Ovia River Bridge, in company of the Chairmen of Ovia North East and Ovia South West Local Government Areas.

The clearing of both sides of Benin-Lagos Express Road is part of measures by the state government to curb crime and ensure the safety and security of lives and properties of residents and travelers across the State.

Uwagbale said the target is to ensure visibility on some identified flashpoints, noting that the development is part of the state government’s commitment to ensure safety of commuters before and beyond the ember months.

According to him, “It’s important for us, on behalf of the Governor and the local governments of Ovia North East and Ovia South West, to ensure that our roads are safe as the ember months are here. We are here to inspect the roads and ensure that we clear the bushes on the sides so people can see clearly and can be safer.

The Commissioner added, “We are impressed with the work done but more work needs to be done. This is a good job so far but it can be better, more importantly the other roads. The Benin-Akure Road, we are going to look at that; the Benin-Ehor Road is another one we will be looking at. I just want to thank the two chairmen of this axis who have been very cooperative. We will continue to support them.”

On his part, the Ovia South West Local Government Chairman, Engr. Edosa Enowoghomwenma, who expressed appreciation to Governor Godwin Obaseki for the initiative, said, “The first time this initiative was executed, the crime rate on the Benin-Ore Road was reduced drastically and we must commend His Excellency for this achievement.”

Also, Ovia North East LGA Chairman, Hon Collins Ogbewe, said, “We will put in more efforts to make sure that our roads are cleared and well-opened so that it can be safe for commuters to move.”

The exercise is expected to continue on the Benin-Akure Road; Upper Siluko Road; and Benin-Ogbese Road among other identified flashpoints across the State.

Edo unveils new city project to decongest Benin City, commences sale of plots

The Edo State Commissioner for Housing, Urban and Regional Planning and Development, Isoken Omo, has said that a new city project, CORAL City, is being developed to decongest Benin City.

She noted that about 467 plots in CORA City are now ready for subscription.

Speaking during a press conference in the State Secretariat in Benin City, she noted that there is a lot of pressure in the city centre, leading to indiscriminate developments, which led to the new city project.

According to her: “The development of the CORA City is to reduce the pressure in Benin City. The Edo State New Town Development Authority was set up by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration and CORA City is its first project. The project is located along the Ogba-Irhirhi axis in the State. The project is in four phases and work is ongoing on the first phase of the project.

“We have residential, commercial, multi-purpose plots, including religious, leisure, schools, markets, health centres, green areas and every other needs for a city to thrive.

“The project is coming with full infrastructure, including roads, drainages, walk ways, water, power, and telecommunications facilities. The project would house about 50,000 people when it's fully completed.”

Omo said the project was opened for subscription about two weeks ago with 467 plots for sale, which includes those for different land uses.

“We have individuals and comprehensive developers and it’s open for subscription,” she added.

The Commissioner also noted that the state’s Clean and Green Initiative is now to be known as Grow 100.

She noted that the project includes different arms, including human capital development, infrastructural transformation and development of two master plans.

Omo stated: “In our master plan, we have set up the clean and green initiative where we are going to employ 100 young persons between 25 and 30 years of age. We have started training them. We have architects, town planners, civil engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical and structural engineers, land and estate surveyors, builders, GIS specialists and landscapers.”

She said they will be trained in the different aspects of the master plan, property, projects and construction management.

World Tourism Day: Edo to rally stakeholders on heritage promotion, protection policy to drive sector growth

Edo State Government, as part of activities to mark the 2023 World Tourism Day, will bring stakeholders in the State’s tourism sector together to seek their buy-in and input in the recently drafted Edo State Heritage Promotion and Protection Policy, a document aimed at setting guidelines and implementation strategies for the conservation and promotion of the State’s tangible and intangible heritage materials.

This was contained in a press statement by the State Commissioner for Arts, Culture, and Tourism, Dr. Uyi Oduwa Malaka, while disclosing plans by the State to join the world in the celebration of this year’s World Tourism Day (WTD), which is held annually on September 27.

According to her, “World Tourism Day is a day set aside by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) to foster awareness of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, and economic values to mankind.

“The theme for this year’s celebration is “Tourism and Green Investment," which emphasises the vital need for investment in building a tourism sector that delivers for people and the planet.

“Tourism is a positive force of nature that helps to connect our heritage, historicity and our present. It connects culture civilizations and melts humanity into a common narrative of origins and experiences.’’

The Commissioner further stated that activities to mark the occasion would hold at the Ogba Zoological Garden on Wednesday September 27, with the major focus on unveiling that State’s Heritage Promotion and Protection Policy, noting that, ‘‘it will feature stakeholders input in the recently drafted Edo State Heritage Promotion and Protection Policy, guided tours, workshops and it will highlight some of the milestones recorded by the state government in the tourism space.

“This policy places robust emphasis on preservation, conservation and maintenance of our heritage sites and intangible heritage that is consistent with this year’s theme of green investment.”

The statement further encouraged participants and stakeholders in the sector to suggest ideas that will promote sustainable tourism practices through environmentally friendly initiatives.

Group applauds Obaseki on free bus ride scheme

A socio-political group, Concerned Edo Citizens Forum, has applauded Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on the free bus ride scheme for residents in the State to assuage the hardship caused by the removal of fuel subsidy.

The free bus scheme kicked off on September 11 and is scheduled to last for two months.

In a statement by the Convener, Concerned Edo Citizens Forum (CECF), Comrade Roy Oribhabor and the group’s Director of Publicity, Mr. Felix Osas Osagie, said, “We hereby commend and appreciate the Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki for demonstrating leadership in a critical time in the history of Edo State through the provision of free bus rides across the State is a welcome development.”

“The approval of free buses to reduce the stress and difficulties Edo people undergo on a daily basis as a result of the removal of fuel subsidy is commendable.

“The palliative is timely and beneficial. We commend and appreciate the Edo State Government under the leadership and hegemonic disposition of Mr. Godwin Obaseki. The stress Edo people pass through was terrible to bear but the intervention of Mr. Governor has drastically reduced the difficulties. We salute the governor for a job well done.

“The CECF is proud of Mr. Governor's performance in office and also advised him to remain undaunted despite the opposition’s shenanigans. We appreciate the management of ECTS for doing a good job.”

Govt Offices in Edo State not Personal

…‘Directive to Office of the Dep. Gov. sufficient notice for relocation of office in service rules’

Government offices in Edo State are not personalised and are often subject to change as is expedient for smooth administration of the State, a source close to Edo State Government House, who is familiar with administrative matters, has said.

He noted that the official channel of communication within government is through the civil service and that the directive to the Office of the Deputy Governor notifying them of the relocation of the office accommodation of the Deputy Governor suffices and applies to all who work from the old office.

A letter was written to the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Deputy Governor weeks ago by the Head of Service, Anthony Okungbowa Esq., directing officials in the Office of the Deputy Governor to relocate to the new location on No, 7, Dennis Osadebe Avenue, GRA, Benin City.

“That letter is sufficient in informing everyone working out of the Office of the Deputy Governor that they have been relocated. In fact, many of the workers have moved their work tools to the new site. It is therefore disingenuous for the Deputy Governor to claim that he is not aware that the office has been relocated.”

The source, who faulted the claim by the Deputy Governor, Hon. Philip Shaibu, that he was not informed of the relocation of his office, stated that the Deputy Governor cannot justify not being informed personally because the office he occupies is not personal.

According to him, when the Governor goes, the office of the Governor remains and same for the Deputy Governor.

According to the source, “The people he calls my civil servants are not his civil servants but they are Edo State Government workers working in the office of the Deputy Governor to carry out activities and assist the Deputy Governor in the performance of duties assigned to him by the Governor as there is no constitutional role for the office of the Deputy Governor.

“When a letter is written to that office for relocation, it means that everything and everyone including the Deputy Governor, moves with them. The Deputy Governor cannot justify not being informed personally because the office is not personal,” he added

The source further noted that before now since the relocation, the Deputy Governor worked from his house and so how can he now say he was not informed of the relocation of the office.

“The sudden defiance on his part as noticed in the preceding week, prompted the letter of 15th September 2023, which was written to the Deputy Governor directly and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq. reiterating the directive for the relocation of his office,” he added.

We’ve strengthened Edo’s primary healthcare system for quality, efficient service delivery, says Obaseki


The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his government has in the past seven years invested in revamping the State’s healthcare system to meet global standards, focusing on primary healthcare to ensure an affordable, quality and efficient healthcare delivery to Edo people.

Speaking to journalists in Benin City, the governor said his administration prioritised the decentralisation of the healthcare system, ensuring the expansion of healthcare services to more remote locations across the State, so that no matter how far people live from the city centres, they will be able to access quality and affordable healthcare.

According to him, “For us, the emphasis has been on primary healthcare. Part of our whole healthcare strategy is hinged on four key factors. The first is healthcare financing. Somebody must pay, unlike in the past where everybody relied on government expenditure which just didn’t help our healthcare system. Most people now pay out-of-pocket. Without a healthcare financing system, it will be difficult to sustain any healthcare system.

“What we have done is to launch the Edo State Health Insurance Scheme. We asked ourselves, with the government’s limited finances, where should the government spend its money? Is it in secondary care or primary care? We chose primary care. Then how should we approach primary care? We decided to approach primary care from two perspectives: primary care at the time had just buildings. We said no, it’s human capacity more than anything else that drives the healthcare system.”

He further stated, “Most of the primary healthcare workers we met were residents in the local governments, and because the local government structure was very weak and couldn’t support an efficient primary healthcare centre, it didn’t work. We had to set up a separate agency – the Primary Healthcare Development Agency.

“We moved the primary healthcare workers into that agency which we now share with the local governments. With that, we have control of them. We now changed their conditions of service and scheme of service to create more incentives for them to do the work and ensured adequate capacity building.”

Obaseki added, “Lastly, we adopted technology. If you go into any primary healthcare centre, we know you have come there because the healthcare workers take your vitals, record them and the doctor can see from the back-end the condition of that patient and then follow up. Our goal is to have 200 of these primary health care centres across the State with one in every ward.”

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has put all modalities in place to mobilise support for Bendel Insurance Football Club of Benin against their opponent in the continental face-off, Renaissance Sportive de Berkane (RSB) of Morocco at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on Saturday, September 16, by 4pm.

The government is providing free buses through the Edo City Transport Services (ECTS) at 14 different pick-up points to and from the match venue. Entry to the stadium is free to encourage fans to fill up the 12,000 capacity stadium.

The Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to Edo State Governor, Mr. Andrew Okungbowa, said the governor expresses appreciation to football lovers for their massive support for Bendel Insurance Football Club against their last opponents, Aso Chlef FC of Algeria.

According to him: “We are equally calling on Edo people to come out en masse and support their darling team against their Moroccan counterpart. Edo State through Bendel Insurance is at the verge of making history.

“For over three decades ago, we didn’t compete at this level on the continent. Now we have the opportunity to prove ourselves. We were victorious in the first preliminary round. We are at the second stage. We need your support to go far. We are appealing to everyone to be at the stadium to massively support the team.

“The governor has done everything possible to encourage the team. The team is not lacking as all that is needed has been provided. We have also put everything in place to mobilise our people as it will be another history making event.

Executive Chairman, Edo State Sports Commission, Mr. Yusuf Ali, said 15,000 tickets have been produced for the game and the ticket is free so we can fill the 12,000 capacity Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium to cheer Bendel Insurance Football Club to victory.

“We would still maintain the 30 buses shuttle and 14 pick-up points where the buses will carry fans to and from the stadium at the end of the game. We have already organised a road show to let the people know about the match. This is a 12,000 capacity stadium but we have printed 15, 000 tickets and the tickets are ready and it’s free for everyone as the gates will be wide open to receive as many fans as possible.

The MD/CEO, ECTS, Mrs Hauwa Dupe Ohikhuai, said: “The route for the free bus service include Ugbowo axis, Airport Road, Sokponba Road, Ikpoba-Hill, Eyean-Aduwawa axis, King Square axis, Ogida Siluko Road, New Benin, Sapele Road and Ekenwan Road.”

Obaseki eulogises ‘Big Mummy’ Ojemudia, celebrates her legacies

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has celebrated the life and legacies of late Deaconess (Dr.) Victoria Omorogieva Ojemudia (Nee Chief Gaius Ikuobase Obaseki) fondly called 'Big Mummy,' who died at the age of 96 years.

Obaseki, who was fostered by the late Deaconess Ojemudia, spoke glowingly about her life and times at the Night of Tributes held in her honour, at Horatio Marquee, in Benin City. He described her as an educationist to the core, disciplinarian, godly and a very realistic woman, as well as the glue that brought the family together.

He said, “Big mummy is an educationist to the core. She was an integral part of the Baptist family. She is a very realistic woman and a mother who in the last few years has been making preparations for her exit. She hoped she would celebrate her 96th birthday this year but every time we have sessions together, she sometimes calls to see the children because she wants to tidy up her affairs before she passes on.

“She was the glue that brought the family together and we would all miss her greatly. She had an encyclopedic mind as she remembered everybody, checked on everybody and cared for everybody. We have lost our matriarch. At various performances tonight, especially that of the children, we are reminded of her core values and that is what she stood for, which is our family values.”

The governor continued: “We should take solace in the fact that we had the privilege of having our matriarch for almost a century as she was quite generous with material things.

“For the Ogbeide-Oyo family, this is a great loss for us as we have lost our matriarch and we are sad and in mourning over her death.

“We appreciate the fact that she must be resting in the Lord because of the way she lived her life.”

Obaseki added, “I want to thank all who are present here today to celebrate with our lovely Big Mummy. The dignitaries present have made this appear like a State event and I can't thank you all enough for this honour.”

The Edo State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Joan Osa Oviawe, during her tribute in honour of the matriarch’s contributions to the development of the State’s education sector, said her life was a shining example of love for children, family, society and nation at large.

She said, “She is a dedicated teacher and committed proprietor. Her life was built on faith, commitment and resilience. She possesses the ability to influence and infuse discipline to all that come across her. She is generous and always giving. She was a great disciplinarian and supporter of our EdoBEST reforms programme.”

MOWAA ‘ll reposition Edo as global arts, tourism hub, says Obaseki

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the development of the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) will contribute immensely towards the quest of his administration to reposition the State as the arts and tourism hub in Africa.

Obaseki, while speaking to journalists in Benin City, the Edo State capital, said the project is part of ongoing efforts by the government to transform the State’s art and culture sector, boost tourism receipts and grow the State’s economy.

According to him, “One unique advantage of Edo is its culture. Nobody else has it and the world now recognises this. It has become even a lot more famous with all the controversies surrounding returns of our artefacts. So, I thought that if the world has acknowledged and recognised these unique attributes, how do we as a State and as a people monetise it?

“How do we take advantage of it? How do we give it some tourist value? You know, if people go out to the world to see these things, how can we tell our story differently so that more people can come here and see us, not just see things?”

The governor continued: “Because these are artefacts, products our forebears created long ago and those same creative instincts that led to all of these are still here with us as it's still the same blood that flows in our veins. So, why not create a similar environment that will allow for these creative instincts, these creative geniuses in our people to blossom?

“You can only do that when you have supporting infrastructure to do these things, that's where things like the MOWAA’s Institute under construction, the museum, and the display areas become important and necessary; that's the reason. It's not just about the returns of the Benin artefacts.”

He added, “The other issue is that we still have all sorts of arts here, ancient and modern. The key is, how are we preserving them, how are we conserving them? If the works that we are asking to be returned were not preserved and conserved, will we find them today to be returned?

“For us, we see arts as fortune, so we’re trying to create the environment, including the infrastructure. The thinking is to make the wealth, the fortune that is embedded already in our arts. That is why MOWAA is important, that's why the Institute is important, and that's why we’ve redesigned the city centre as a cultural centre where people can come in and see elements, and relics of this great kingdom.

“That’s why we are restoring parts of the moats so that people can come in, look at the moat work, go through a moat walk, and try to understand the things that influenced this great empire.”

Obaseki, Namibian envoy applaud Esama of Benin for contributions to Nigeria, Africa’s devt

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki and the Namibia Ambassador to Nigeria, Humphrey Geiseb, have lauded the Esama of Benin Kingdom, Sir (Chief) Dr. Osawaru Gabriel Igbinedion, for his contributions to the progress and development of Nigeria and Africa continent.

Obaseki, who received the Ambassador and his wife, Lena, at the Government House, in Benin City, the Edo State capital, said the Esama of Benin, who recently celebrated his 89th birthday, exploits across various sectors has created new frontiers that opened limitless opportunities for Edo people, Nigerians and Africans.

Commending the envoy for honouring the illustrious Benin son, Obaseki noted, “We thank you and your beautiful wife for honouring our illustrious son, the Esama of Benin Kingdom on the occasion of his 89th birthday celebration.

“We thank and appreciate you and also acknowledge that personalities can also drive our diplomacy as this is what Chief Igbinedion is helping us to do in this continent and Country in particular. We pray God gives him good health and long life, and next year as we celebrate him at 90, you will be here to celebrate with him.”

The Namibian Ambassador, on his part, commended the governor for creating a business friendly environment for investors in the State, noting that the Country will partner with the State to drive growth and development in both regions.

He said, “We are looking forward to returning again and again given that there is more connectivity between Abuja and Benin City.”

Geiseb said the visit to the State, apart from strengthening the relationship between Edo State and Namibia and sharing free ideas where opportunities exist for investments, is to attend the 89th Birthday celebration of the Esama of Benin Kingdom, Gabriel Igbinedion.

Obaseki partners private school operators to improve learning outcomes, standard of education

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Wednesday, met with private school operators in the State to rally their support for the government’s efforts at enhancing the quality of education and improving learning outcomes across schools in the State.

The governor, at a closed-door meeting with the private school operators, at the Government House, in Benin City, reaffirmed his government’s commitment to tackling learning poverty and enhancing access to inclusive and quality education.

The Associations present at the meeting include the Association of Private School Owners of Nigeria (APSON), the Association for Formidable Educational Development (AFED), and the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS).

The Edo State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Joan Osa Oviawe, who spoke to journalists after the meeting on behalf of the governor, said the government is committed to providing a thriving business environment for small and medium-scale enterprises including private schools, adding, “His Excellency listened to concerns and issues raised and discussed and we came up with an agreement.”

She continued: “The immediate task on the part of the proprietors is to submit to the directorate of quality assurance, a list of their members. Before we start to discuss or talk about various issues raised, we want to know and benchmark their members, who are registered in Edo State, those who are providing standard quality of education, those not meeting the standard but willing to improve, and those that really have no business providing education because their quality are sub-standard.

“The associations have promised that before Friday 15th September 2023, they will submit the list of their members in Edo State.”

On his part, the State Chairman of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), Edo State Chapter, Dr. Lemmy Russel, has expressed the readiness of the private school operators to improve the quality of education in Edo State.

He said the governor and the private school operators explored various issues relating to challenges and way of improving the State’s education sector, among others.

The NAPPS chairman said, “We just came out of a meeting with the governor and have agreed to work with the Ministry of Education and the Directorate of Quality Assurance. It's our hope to work as a team.”

Obaseki, Namibia explore trade, investment opportunities in livestock farming, technology, others

…says partnership ‘ll stem protein shortfall in Nigeria

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has initiated talks with the Namibian Government to explore trade and investment opportunities in livestock production, technology, and management services, among others between the Country and Edo State.

The governor disclosed this when he played host to the Namibia Ambassador to Nigeria, Humphrey Geiseb, and his wife, Lena, who were on a courtesy visit at the Government House, in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Obaseki called for increased collaboration to drive economic growth and reap other economic benefits that lie in increased bilateral trade relations between the national and sub-national governments.

Obaseki said, “We appreciate you for taking the time to meet with us on a government-to-government basis and explore opportunities available in terms of economy and other forms of cooperation. We have had a cordial relationship with your Country in terms of the struggle for independence to date.

“We appreciate the fact that we are extending the relationship beyond national to sub-national relationships. Businesses and citizens live in the States and I am not surprised that many Countries like yours and diplomats like you go into Countries to see how to do business together, taking advantage of the bilateral agreement and other agreements already established by the two Countries.”

The governor further noted, “Namibia has a strong economy and has challenges like any other African country but has established global competitiveness in other areas and that is where we would like to collaborate with you. We believe opportunities exist in terms of services and I don't see why we can't work with some of your professional services firms in the areas of technology, and management services, among others.

“Most importantly, we admire the way you run your livestock industry in Namibia and it is one area, as a State, that we would be exploring opportunities to see how we can collaborate and cooperate to help us stem the protein shortfall in our Country.”

He added, “We would be counting on your support to see how you can partner with us with high-value agricultural regions in Namibia to enable us to establish working relationships with those regions to see how we begin to boost investment and trade. We believe this is the first of many visits, and we would take time out to come and see you in Abuja and commence further conversation on these areas of cooperation.”

In his response, Geiseb said the visit was to explore areas of investment in Edo State, adding, “Our cooperation between Nigeria and Namibia is very good as Nigeria has supported Namibia during its struggle for independence.

“Today, Namibia and Nigeria maintain a cordial relationship and continue to ensure strong cooperation in various areas and this year or next year, we will host the 5th session of the Nigeria-Namibia Joint Commission of Cooperation to discuss cooperation in various areas.”

He further noted, “Our visit today is aimed at strengthening the relationship between Edo State and Namibia and sharing free ideas where opportunities exist. Edo State has a lot of opportunities that Namibia business people could tap into and through that, we are hoping we can come to participate in the Benin Trade Expo taking place this year or next year. This will give us the opportunity to showcase Namibia’s products and also observe products produced in Edo State.

“There are many opportunities for cooperation and bilateral trade in various areas as the governor has expressed the readiness of the State to work with Namibia in the areas of animal husbandry as we work to produce quality beef and export same to the rest of the world.”

CAF Confederation Cup Qualifier: Obaseki confident of victory as excitement builds ahead of Bendel Insurance Vs RS Berkane game

Football enthusiasts in Edo State are brimming with anticipation as the State capital, Benin City, wears new look, with different parts of the city painted in yellow, the iconic hues of Bendel Insurance, as the Benin Arsenals get set for the highly-anticipated CAF Qualifiers clash with Renaissance Sportive de Berkane (RSB) of Morocco.

The Edo-based Benin Arsenals will play host to the 2021/2022 CAF Confederation Cup winners this Saturday, September 16, 2023, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, in the first leg of the Second Qualifying Round of the competition. The teams will battle for 90 minutes for a place in the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup Competition.

The Benin Arsenals who are Nigeria’s Federation Cup holders, secured their spot in the Second Round of the CAF Confederations Cup after an impressive first and second-leg performance against Aso Chlef of Algeria, who are the 2022/23 Algerian Cup winners.

There are improved economic activities in the city centre as local businesses have seized the opportunity to capitalise on the feverish excitement, witnessing increasing sales with several vendors selling the team’s merchandise, such as jerseys, flags, and scarves at every nook and cranny of the city.

Fuel Subsidy Removal: Over 23,500 passengers benefit from Obaseki’s free transport service in 24 hours

Over 23,500 residents of Edo State have benefited from the free transport service of the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, in the first 24 hours of the commencement of the scheme, aimed at cushioning the effect of the fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government on the people of the State.

The governor had yesterday flagged off the free bus service for passengers on all routes operated by the state-owned Edo City Transport Limited (ECTS), with the pledge that his government will sustain efforts to reduce the hardship inflicted on the people by the subsidy removal, ensuring improved wellbeing and welfare for the people.

The free transport scheme, which is for initial two months, operates between 6am and 7pm daily, covering all ECTS operational routes, both intra-city and inter-city routes, including Auchi - Igarra - Ibillo–Ososo; Uzebba–Ikhin – Otuo, and Abudu-Ubiaja, Abudu-Urhonigbe and Ewohirin to Ewatto.

The intra-city routes are Ramat–Kingsquare; New Benin–Kingsquare; Kingsquare – Ekenwan Road; Kingsquare–Airport Road; Kingsquare–Sapele Road and Kingsquare – Adesuwa, Kingsquare–Ogida; New Benin – Upper Mission; Kingsquare–Ugbowo; Kingsquare–Agbor Road; Kingsquare–Upper Sokponba; New Benin – Ugbowo and New Benin–Aduwawa.

Briefing journalists in Benin City, the Edo State capital, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Edo State Transport Authority, Edugie Agbonlahor, said the state-owned transport company has witnessed a surge in commuters as a result of the free bus service, noting that about 23,652 passengers have benefitted from the service in the last 24 hours.

According to her, “We are glad with the positive impact being made through the free bus service of the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal on Edo people. We have continued to witness a surge in passengers for our inter-city and intra-city routes, recording a total of 23, 652 passengers, including 23,143 intra-city and 509 inter-city commuters in the first 24 hours after the flag off of the scheme.

“We know that these numbers will continue to skyrocket following the success recorded as we intensify efforts to expand the programme after the initial two-month period.”

The National President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA), Dele Kelvin Oye Esq., has lauded the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki for his administration's progressive economic reforms which have transformed the State into Nigeria’s petrochemical hub with two operational modular refineries.

The two modular refineries in the state have continued to wax strong, with both now having a standing order of 300,000 barrels of crude from the Oza oil field.

Decklar Resources Inc and its co-venturer Millenium Oil & Gas Company Limited, which operate the Oza oil field, confirmed that aside from the 200,000 barrels of crude ordered by the Edo Refinery and Petrochemical Company Limited, Duport Midstream Company Limited has placed an order of 100,000 barrels of crude from the field. The products from the modular refineries in Edo State include diesel, low-pour fuel, and naphtha.

In a statement on Monday, the NACCIMA boss said Edo State has also been experiencing an influx of investments into various sectors of the State’s economy, which is a testament to the favourable business environment created by Governor Obaseki.

Oye said, “The Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) has lauded the progressive economic reforms introduced by Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State. The initiatives aimed at transforming the state into a petrochemical hub have yielded positive results, with the two modular refineries in the state making standing orders of 300,000 barrels of crude from the Oza oil field. This is in addition to the 100,000 barrels ordered by Duport Midstream Company Limited.

“The products from these modular refineries include diesel, low-pour fuel, and naphtha, which provide an avenue for revenue generation for the state."

In a statement by the Chief Executive Officer of Decklar Resources, Sanmi Fumuyide, he disclosed that trucking of crude oil from the Oza Oil Field to the Edo Refinery and Petrochemicals Company Limited facility has reached a cumulative volume of over 55,000 bbls.

This is in line with Governor Obaseki's promise to drive economic growth in the state through his industrialisation policy.”

He noted, “Furthermore, Edo State has also been experiencing an influx of investments into various sectors of the economy, which is a testament to the favourable business environment created by Governor Obaseki. The governor's efforts towards improving infrastructure, such as the road networks, have also attracted private sector participation in the state.”

Oye added, “NACCIMA commends Governor Godwin Obaseki for his people-oriented and innovative policies that have resulted in a surge of economic growth in Edo State. Ighodalo said this at the inauguration of the sub-committees for the 2023 Alaghodaro Summit, held in Government House, Benin City.

CAF Confederation Cup: Edo readies as Bendel Insurance hosts Morocco’s RS Berkane Sept 16

Bendel Insurance FC of Benin, Edo State is set for another thrilling continental showdown as they advance in the CAF Confederation Cup with a first-leg clash against Renaissance Sportive de Berkane (RSB) of Morocco in the Second Qualifying Round of the competition.

The Edo-based team will host the 2021/2022 CAF Confederation Cup winners for a place in the group stage, on Saturday, September 16, 2023, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, the Edo State capital.

The Benin Arsenals who are Nigeria’s Federation Cup holders, secured their spot in the Second Round of the CAF Confederations Cup after a remarkable first and second-leg performance against Aso Chlef of Algeria, who are the 2022/23 Algerian Cup winners.

The team, which has remained unbeaten this season, has continued to enjoy the support and motivation from the state government which has rejuvenated the indomitable spirit for which the Benin Arsenals have always been known.

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the Federal Government lacks the capacity to effectively manage itself and cannot be trusted to fix federal roads in the State, noting that the State Government will work with the newly inaugurated local council chairmen to build alternative roads to end the suffering of residents and other users of the federal roads in the State.

Obaseki, while addressing journalists in Benin City, said his government remains committed to advancing development in all communities and improving the livelihoods and welfare of the people of the State.

The governor said, “The Federal Government as you know today lacks the capacity to manage itself not to talk of building these roads. It will take a while for them to be able to build and fix those roads. Fortunately, we have had other connections, so our priority is to design and work with the State and local governments to build alternative State roads. Infrastructure is important and we should be able to move our people, their goods and services across the State to bring development.

“Today, we are in a crisis in our Country. What is hurting Edo is the advantage we have in terms of our location of being at the core of the Country and therefore being connected with roads owned by the Federal Government. When we build those roads, they will be barricaded and restricted for use.”

Decrying the current economic realities in the Country which has continued to impoverish more citizens, Obaseki noted, “As you know today, we are facing very harsh economic times and it's tough. Every day, the naira gets devalued and more people go into poverty as they can’t feed themselves. As a people and a society, we can't turn our eyes and abandon our people. We must look for a way to strengthen them and ensure that our citizens don't go to bed hungry.

“The poorest of the poor and the weakest in the society must not go to bed hungry and must be taken care of as it's our responsibility as a government. We can't wait for palliatives but rather create our own palliatives for Edo people; that surely, we will do for them.”

Edo govt announces routes for intra, intercity free transport service

The Edo State Government has released routes for its new free transport service scheduled to kick off across the State from Monday, September 11, 2023.

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, had, on Monday, approved free transport service for passengers on all routes operated by the state-owned Edo City Transport Ltd (ECTS) to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal policy by the Federal Government on the people of the State.

The free bus service which spans an initial two-month period covers commuting within the Benin metropolis and from Benin-City to the major cities in the three senatorial districts and will run between 6.30 am and 7 pm daily.

In a statement to announce the routes, Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State Governor, Andrew Okungbowa, restated the government’s commitment to the welfare of Edo people, reassuring that the government will sustain efforts to ameliorate the sufferings of residents amid the fuel subsidy removal policy of the Federal Government.

According to Okungbowa, the inter-city routes are Auchi - Igalla - Ibillo–Ososo; Uzebba–Ikhin – Otuo, and Abudu to Ubiaja.

Others are Abudu to Urhonigbe and Ewohirin to Ewatto.

He further listed the intra-city routes to include Ramat–Kingsquare; New Benin–Kingsquare; Kingsquare – Ekenwan Road; Kingsquare–Airport Road; Kingsquare–Sapele Road and Kingsquare – Adesuwa.

Other intra-city routes announced by the state government are Kingsquare–Ogida; New Benin – Upper Mission; Kingsquare–Ugbowo; Kingsquare–Agbor Road; Kingsquare–Upper Sokponba; New Benin – Ugbowo and New Benin–Aduwawa.

Okungbowa noted, “We are confident that this transportation support by His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, will significantly reduce the citizens’ mobility problems and improve their welfare within this period of hardship occasioned by the fuel subsidy removal of the Federal Government, while all efforts are being made to purchase new gas-powered buses for the State.”

Obaseki mourns passing of Sen. Alimikhena’s wife

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has mourned the passing of the wife of the immediate past Senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, Lady Monica Alimikhena.

In a statement, the governor described late Lady Monica as a compassionate mother.

He said, “It is with a heavy heart that I received the news of the passing of the wife of the immediate past Senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, Lady Monica Alimikhena.

“A kind and compassionate mother, Lady Alimikhena was a rare gem, who contributed immensely to the development of her immediate community.”

“She supported her husband, Senator Francis Alimikhena in his efforts to ensure the advancement of the people of Edo North.”

The governor added, “She was a strong grassroots mobilizer and served her people creditably. Her efforts to provide succor to women and children remain indelible.”

7 million documents archived as Edo transits to paperless govt Sept 1 - Obaseki

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his administration has embraced technology through the e-Governance system leading to the archiving of seven million government documents in readiness to transit into paperless government operation from September 1, 2023.

Speaking to members of the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA) led by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, Obaseki said the Executive arm of government is concluding its digitalisation processes, requesting the legislative arm to follow suit.

The governor said the new regime will ensure accountability, transparency, effectiveness, efficiency and quick service delivery to Edo people.

According to him, “In the area of digitisation, one of the conversations we will be having with you in a few weeks’ time is to ask what the legislative arm of this administration is doing in terms of digitising the legislature? The Executive arm is concluding the digitisation process already.

“As of today, we have scanned, archived and digitalised over seven million government records and from September 1, we are cutting off and transitioning into a paperless government.”

The governor said prior to his assumption of office, the work environment was hazardous, noting that the exit door in case of fire at the state secretariat building was filled with files.

He noted that his visit to the Secretariat Building on November 14, 2016, enabled him to arrive at a sense of direction on the need for paperless government.

“Today, the Edo State Civil/Public Service is the most digitised in Nigeria with over 5,000 computers and fibre optics connections across government offices. By September 1 this year, like I said earlier, Edo State would go completely paperless, which will make us the first State to achieve this feat. I would be the last governor to work on physical files in Edo State.”

Speaking on the September 1 cut off date, the Edo State Head of Service, Anthony Okungbowa Esq., said Governor Obaseki has made the State the most e-governance compliant in the country.

“As I speak to you right now, no State in Nigeria is ranked close to us in terms of technology adoption in running government and delivering effective and efficient services to the people.”
