I'm a physician who practice in Florida and I have taken care of at least 40 patients ranging from 95–106 years old.

I’m interested in the genetics of my patients, and the things they have in common.

Most of them were women, W:M ratio 7:3.

They were single, divorced, or widowed very early.

They did not have many children, 0–2 children, which was not the rule at their time.

The women were mostly Caucasian, or Asian, and the men were of African-american or Hispanic descent.

Education or social status had nothing to do with their longevity. All of them had humble origins, and had to work very hard in agriculture, war, house, masonry, sales, and many have had several jobs. Most of them kept working late despite retirement, and one was still volunteering in a local library.

None of them were obese or overweight. Weight ranged from 95–140 pounds and Body Mass Index was below 25 for all of them.

Their diet was healthy by all standards - with a classic Mediterranean, Kosher, Asian diet - high in fish, vegetables, roots, oil, coffee, tea, water, and had no Toxic Habits.

Faith played a major role in their lives - most of my patients had a strong faith support, and visited a church/temple/synagogue, and were involved and respected in their congregations.

Surprisingly, only 10% of my patients actively exercised when younger as part of their routine (except for 4 soldiers who became sedentary after 2–8 years in the military), however they resumed an active lifestyle in their 50–60’s.

Half of the female patients looked younger than their stated age.

Some of them were cancer survivors, and their cancers were diagnosed early, and managed appropriately.

Fact is that you cannot clean out your lungs. If you smoke, quit smoking. That is the most important step. But for those who never have smoked there is no way to clean out your lungs. Ex-smokers will notice some brownish phlegm come up every once and awhile for several years after quitting. This is old tar from the cigarette smoke that is excreted by the mucous glands from the bronchial tubes and the smaller airways, called bronchioles. The remainder of the tar is visible on the surface of the lungs like a tattoo for the rest of your life.
When I was sectioning corpses as part of my anatomy training in medical school, you could see who had been a smoker and who was not. Look at the photos below. The difference is that drastic!

The only thing you can do is to prevent inhaling cigarette smoke by becoming or staying a non-smoker. Also, avoid super-polluted areas of the planet like Beijing or Delhi as pollution also enters your lungs and stays there partially.

I thought I was growing old. Hiking up the hill behind my home, a climb of 800 feet, was turning into drudgery.

Then one afternoon, when walking up 30 feet to my house (on a hill) I got very tired. My shoulder ached. I slowly went up the rest of the way, sat down in an easy chair, and rested. My shoulder hurt; I assumed it was a pinched nerve, so I stretched, but it did no good.

At 10 pm I went to bed, but was very uncomfortable. Finally I got up and sat back in my easy chair. I was still uncomfortable. I read a book and few hours went by. I got back into bed, but it made my shoulder feel even worse. Back to my chair.

Finally I thought I should call the “Advice Nurse” at Kaiser. I called, and was put on hold. I recalled that my MD had expressed some concern about my heart; this clearly wasn’t associated with that, but while I was on hold I Googled “heart attack”. I read down the list. Yes for that symptom; check. Neck pain! Check that symptom. Check. After 3 checks, I hung up on the Kaiser wait and dialed 911.

“Can I help you?” the woman asked.

“I’m not sure, but I think I may be having some symptoms of a heart attack?”

“Is your address …” Yes, I said. “Is there someone there who can open the door?” Yes. “Someone is on their way and should be at your home in 5 minutes.”

Wow. 911 worked just as it was supposed to!

I met the ambulance down in the street. “I’m the guy who called.” They told me to get in. (My wife couldn’t come, because we were babysitting our granddaughter; she arrived later that afternoon.) On the ride they measured my blood pressure, took my pulse, took a blood sample, and did an EKG which they emailed to the hospital.

In the ambulance, I told the nurse that I wasn’t sure I should have called. She laughed. She said I had waited too long. “I get two kinds of people,” she said. “Those who wait too long, like you, and those who call because they have a splinter in their toe.”

When I arrived, I was sent immediately into an emergency room and examined by a doctor. They injected me with a blood thinner. Within a half hour the blood sample confirmed I had had a heart attack. It was mild (it turns out that there was only minuscule permanent damage) but it was real.

They asked me if I would prefer open heart surgery or stents. I chose stents. They were inserted that afternoon. Since I had requested no anesthetics (other than local) they let me go home that evening.

Three weeks later I (with doctor’s permission) climbed to the top of Vernal Falls in Yosemite. At the top I did a “Rocky Balboa dance” celebrating my recovery. But even more joyous was to discover that I had only had a heart attack. That was quite a relief from my prior self-diagnosis that I was having trouble walking because I was “getting old.” Heart attacks are treatable; getting old isn’t.

All this happened back in 2011. Today I feel great (but I carry a nitroglycerine pill with me just in case). I hiked the Mist Trail up to the top of Vernal Falls again, about a month ago, along with my two grandchildren.

We don’t. Its frankly one of the things that irritates me about the form of ‘democracy’ we run now. The senators talk about our potential population growth all the time, they’re actually proud of it. They don’t make plans to keep it sustainable though.

The reason can be traced to 1986. That was our paradigm shift, away from our Latin American inspired import substitution/central planning days to what my Economic history professor calls the “neo-liberal imposition of the Washington consensus”. Now personally I tend to find ideological labels hilarious, but he does have a point. The closest thing to a plan we have the Sustainable Development Goals aside is the Vision 2020. Which isn’t a plan, but a vision which has been partly fulfilled.

We are likely to be a top-twenty economy by 2020 (already are by some metrics). Now personally, I can see and admire the intellectual argument for trade, I have read about its historical benefits, but as somebody who tries to coral my ideological tendencies, I do not understand why laissez faire precludes planning.

We are a top twenty economy yet 80% of our growing population lives below $1 per day: Laissez Faire.

We are a top twenty economy, yet struggle to maintain 5,000MW power generation: Laissez Faire.

We are a top twenty economy, yet face a demographic time-bomb in our agricultural lands as more young people emigrate to the city or out of the country: Laissez Faire.

We are a top twenty economy but cannot guarantee security throughout the nation: Laissez Faire.

By 2050, we will have a population nearing 400 million: Laissez Faire. Laissez Faaire we’re too focused on ‘growth’, to hell with development and the planning that it entails.

However compounding matters is that the civil service is largely filled with incompetents and political cronies, I (and possibly most of my fellow citizens) wouldn’t trust them to carry out a plan with anything approaching competence. How do they say it: “between the devil and the red sea”, that pretty much sums up Nigeria.

Saheed Osupa, who wrongly calls himself Lord of music, while all he can sing is Fuji, has now gotten irritatingly hoarse voice.

When he was younger, his voice was so good.. Soooo sweet. Although I suspect that the older a musician gets, the less beautiful their voice is. Saheed Osupa’s case is a wonderful example.

How that he’s grown older and fatter (pot belly), his voice has gone from bad to worse, and making his songs seem like jangled cacophony. The voice is now HOARSE.

This dude can sing. He knows how to sing, but the voice is just as though a frog croaks… It’s a pathetic story. Some even say there may be a spiritual reason behind that.

Nonetheless, all hope is not lost. Maybe he can still train his voice to get better and more pleasant to the ear. He needs to develop the willpower and create the time to achieve this, otherwise, the sales of his new albums can be greatly affected.

If you see the guy who calls himself king of music, please tell him to train his voice.

What has been your experience migrating to Canada?

Oh boy!!

Well I am from India and I came to Canada in 2015.

My spouse and I initially wanted to live in Vancouver, but after reading about the high cost of living and even higher competition with regards to jobs, we chickened out and decided to land in Toronto.

How was the initial experience you ask?

Well right from landing at the Pearson airport to getting a taxi and settling in our hotel room, we felt right at home. Searching for rental units, applying for jobs, learning to use the transit systems and breathing in clean air took up most of our time over the next few weeks. With each loonie that we spent, we were loosing 50 times the value in Indian currency. It demanded utmost mental strength not to think much of that.

At that point of time, both of us had more than six years of work experience and were in highly skilled professions. Our resumes received fair amount of responses. However, the moment the prospective employers realized that we have “zero Canadian experience”, they just vanished into thin air.

Finally after three months, both of us got relevant job offers and haven’t looked back ever since.

What we learnt from this experience?

The Canadian economy is not as shining as it is perceived from the outside. Unless you are highly skilled, it is going to be a “not-so-easy” journey.

What we hope you learn from our experience?

Be prepared for the worst.
Save as much as you can before moving to Canada.
Add new skill sets.
Learn French (many jobs need bilingual candidates).
Consider entrepreneurship (in the long run). It is definitely not a cakewalk, but do not limit yourself to the odds of finding a relevant job.
Treat the time before you get a job as a well deserved vacation. Try to spend it wisely with family and friends. Do not get frustrated. Use it to learn and acclimatize yourself to your new “home”.

Attend all the food festivals around the city, see all the good places, visit Niagara Falls, live the life that you immigrated for.

Can you really make a living as a YouTuber?


Obviously it’s possible because many people do it. YouTube these days is certainly not making it easy on content creators that’s for sure. They have problems of their own with not being able to make a profit. Now they have to deal with the bad PR of ads going on questionable videos. As a content creator getting into YouTube is an uphill climb. Most of the good ideas are already taken and even if you come up with something unique you still have to compete with the insane amount of content that is uploaded daily. Cutting through to grab the attention of even a small percentage of the community is an art form within itself.

I am by no means an expert on YouTube. What I can do is give you some tips going forward looking at it like a business person. First, don’t rely on advertising moving forward. It seems extremely chaotic and I don’t even think YouTube knows what they are doing at this point. You can’t rely on that revenue stream to be the main bulk of your money.

Instead look to monetize in other ways. Such as finding one or two key sponsors who you can help support their business in exchange for supporting your channel. Podcasts do this and I think it works well. Make sure to support businesses that you would use yourself. You have your viewers because they trust you. Don’t exploit that trust for money. You can also sell your own products or the products of others on a commission basis. Then of course there is good old Patreon. Patreon is by far the holy grail. Build a devoted following who will support you directly. If you can do that imagine the possibilities. No rules. No investors. Just you and your fans, doing what they are hiring you to do.

It can still be done. Will take some time to adapt, but I’m confident in what creators will do to keep providing what their fans want to see.

What does an Australian think of Nigerians?

Australians do not know anything about Nigeria. If you tell them, you lived in Nigeria; they will mention how they went on a trip to Tanzania to build huts ,they will ask if you can speak Afrikaans or Swahili, they will ask if you know some random African person, ask what is hello in Nigerian (when there are over 500 languages and English is the official language).

I was once invited to a friend’s house for dinner and I was asked by her mother, ‘what is Nigeria known for’. I was about to mention food, music and movies but this friend’s younger sister blurted out ‘corruption’. Everyone else on the table laughed. Then the father started talking about Nigerian prince scams and all other nonsense. I was told apparently that the sister wrote a paper on Nigeria and corruption.

I was in a computer class once and the teacher was teaching about e-waste and how in Nigeria, people go through old hard drives and such and find passwords which are then used to steal information from people abroad. I kid you not, the whole class turned around and looked at me like I was going to steal all their money.

Other conversations with Australians include them thinking there are no fancy cars in Nigeria, that there is crime and a lot of theft, scams as usual , poverty is rampant etc.

So, the reaction to Nigeria is not very positive.

However, I should add that the Aboriginal and Torres strait Islander population have a more positive view. I have Indigeonous friends who want to visit Nigeria with me and ask about the food, music and culture.

The white population on the other hand, not so much.

I often see shops of electronics technicians, rewinders, turners, etc. and gadgets repairers littered with used, old and useless appliances and gadgets.

I once asked one of them the reasons why for that. He’s a veteran technician and his shop is full of disused appliances.

According to him:

Many customers will bring their faulty gadgets and ask him to repair them, but they won’t come back again to claim those gadgets. Some of them would give some down payment, and would never come back.

There are some who would eventually come back to take their appliances – but after months or years. Some gadgets would have been repaired, but the owners won’t come back to claim them.
