Abraham Lincoln, if he were alive and brought up to speed. However, here and now we get to choose between Trump and Clinton. There are no other choices, and if you are able to vote, whatever you do—vote, don’t vote, vote for a splinter party candidates, or write in someone—will help either Trump or Clinton win, given your own situation.

This time around we’re in an unusual situation because the best candidate of the two for liberals is Clinton, but the best candidate for conservatives is also Clinton, who’s also the best candidate for moderates.

This is because the Republican candidate lacks both the preparation and the temperament required of a President. Whatever you think of Clinton, you know she can do the job. There probably has never been a candidate for the American presidency who understands exactly what the job entails as well as she does.

For moderates it’s a no-brainer, because she’s a moderate.

For liberals Trump is an abomination—a swindler and con artist and thin-skinned bully who’d be the bull in the china shop, so for them it should also be a no-brainer.

For small-c conservatives it’s painful. Their rational choice among this year’s Republican candidates would probably have been Jon Kasich, but he’s not available.

And for them I’d say Clinton is a more conservative choice than Trump. I mean, face it—she’d be presiding while the House remains firmly in Republican control, so not one of her policies will be implemented if it needs legislation or new funding. But at the same time she’d prevent the runaway spending that happened the last time a Republican President had a Republican Congress and Supreme Court.

In terms of social policy, remember that we’re electing a President, not a monarch. No President can pass laws single-handedly. Or appoint judges. Even if the Senate goes Democratic, it won’t have a filibuster-proof Democratic majority, so Supreme Court nominations wouldn’t fly unless they as moderate as someone like Judge Garland, who even Chief Justice Roberts approves of, and he’s certainly a conservative.

And from a small-c conservative viewpoint, you know that Clinton wouldn’t do anything startling. She’s a steady-as-she-goes type of politician. Whereas Trump seems capable of anything, as his mercurial moods strike him. It’s not surprising that he admires Putin, who’s a similar personality type.

I’ve never seen so many conservatives—from grassroots up into Washington DC Republicans—who are as opposed to the Republican nominee as they are to Trump, and it’s centered on nonpartisan things. His temperament. His grasp of the job. The likelihood that he would damage the Republican brand severely if he won.

I have not in my lifetime—and I’m old—seen a presidential candidate of either party who seemed so unsuited to the job, and whose background outside politics gave so little “outside” source of confidence in him either.

Clinton is imperfect but she’s in the ballpark. Trump isn’t in the ballpark.

That’s what it boils down to.

Do you regret moving to Canada?

I did and I left.

My background is somewhat different. I was born in the States, but my father is Canadian and my mother is from Europe, so I already had Canadian citizenship. My family moved to Canada when I was eight and I stayed until about a year after finishing university, then moved to the States after getting a job. A few years later, after working and going to grad school, some family issues came up and I had to move back. I wasn’t eager to leave, but I thought I would give it a shot and I was told that there would be plenty of jobs for me in my field, even though I did a ton of research and saw it would be tough. But I was fairly young at the time and I wanted to be closer to my family.

The move did not work out well at all and I soon regretted it. I had great difficulty getting any notice for jobs in my field. I knew I’d probably have to go down a few notches and prepared for it, but the only things I could find were call center and basic admin work. It was humiliating, especially after grad school and working some good jobs at some good organizations in NYC, a place from where my skills should have been transferable or recognized. In the few interviews I was able to get, I was told that I lacked “Canadian experience”, which has apparently become a cliche. At my last interview, the interviewer brought this up and I responded by telling him that I was way more qualified than he was to do his own job. I just didn’t care at that point and didn’t hold back. He agreed and said that I would have a tough time finding good work because lots of Canadian employers are biased against those who went straight to the States after college.

After that, I figured it was time to go and I moved back to NY.

Other reasons why I left:

I couldn’t stand the extreme cold.
My friends, whom I had grown up with, were all married and I was the only single person, so my social life sucked. It was tough to meet new people and I didn’t find the few people I did meet to be all that interesting.
Bad dating scene.
Even if I did end up getting a decent job, my career prospects would have been limited and there would be little chance for growth, so I wanted more diverse opportunities.

Taxes.
The anti-Americanism was a pain in the ass to hear. Canadians have a global reputation of being extremely tolerant and polite…except when it comes to Americans. A lot of it was just nonsensical and it’s a form of prejudice, full stop. It was annoying because I was born in the States and I hated hearing others slag on my place of birth. It’s also incredibly hypocritical to boast about tolerance (even defending intolerant acts by other, non-American cultures!) when practicing the opposite.

Political correctness overdrive. Now, I’m not in favor of insulting others, but the PC environment in Canada is stifling. I remember being told in school that we were to refer to “janitors” as “sanitation engineers”. What the Bleep?! I can imagine it being worse now under Trudeau.

Lack of traveling options and I wanted to travel more. Canada is extremely expensive to travel from.

There are other reasons, but these come to mind right now.

Granted, I do think Canada is a good country and I don’t have any regrets about growing up there. For sure, it was a good place to grow up. It just didn’t work out for me as an adult.

What's the ideal age to start a business?


There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, but recent research suggests that 40 may be the magic number.

Despite media speculation about the entrepreneurial spirit of the younger generation, the average age of an entrepreneur in the UK is 47 (46 for men and 48 for women). US research puts the figure a little lower, saying 40 is the average age to start your first business.

This makes sense. For many, being a twenty-something is characterized by career uncertainty and debt, while a lack of experience working for other companies could make starting your own a risky business.

Your 30s is the era of children and mortgages: a combined responsibility that could rule out taking a leap into the unknown.

Your 40s, on the other hand, represents an attractive combination of financial security and business experience.

Those entrepreneurs were 35, 35, 37, 42, and 42, respectively, when they founded those companies.

I’ve seen a study that says a business with a founder aged 39 is the most likely to succeed. And according to the Kaufman Foundation the average and median age of US-born tech founders was 39, and twice as many were older than 50 as were younger than 25.

There are outliers, and these outliers seem to get most of the attention - Zuckerberg, Spiegel, Gates, etc… These guys came up with original ideas probably because of their lack of conditioning in the work place, and they were damn smart guys. And these outliers have really distorted everyone’s perception of founders’ ages, mine included up to a few months ago.

Now at LaunchPad I’ve been working with entrepreneurs aged 20 to 45. My initial plan was to hire young kids, give them equity, they do 80% of the work, I give direction, money and support.

I wasn’t that keen on working with the guys in their 40’s - not enough energy, not big enough dreamers - but I kind of went along with them.

Here’s a picture of me with one of my ‘middle-aged’ co-founders! Since this photo was taken a year ago, Clay has gone nuts on the exercise and is in amazing shape. Anyway!

I learned some lessons. The tech startups with the 40+ year old founders have done way better than the ones with the guys in their 20’s (we have none in their 30’s), with one exception. It's not only that the startups performed better, but I could see the older guys knew what they were doing, they managed better, executed better.

The guys in their 20’s need a lot of hand-holding - and that's fine - they'll gain experience and get there one day.

Pre-Zuckerberg, everything I've just said was common sense. It still is.

In fact in one startup we had 3 different founders try it out, all in their 20’s. All of them couldn’t make it happen - they all gave up on the idea.

I was convinced the idea should have worked. Two months ago a 40 year old guy decides he’d give it a go. Within 2 weeks we’re profitable, we have 17 staff 7 weeks after launch, and I see this as a US$20m+ business within 5 years. I could see how this older guy could manage so much better - not surprising given he has plenty of management experience.

If you’re in your late 30’s to late 50’s don’t let age put you off even slightly - you’re probably in your prime and you can’t waste it.

And if you’re in your 20’s and 30’s go for it too - you have a lot more upside from a successful venture.

What is the dark side of PhD?



Here are some dark sides of PhDs.

Impostor syndrome. You feel that you are not good enough. You always question yourself.
Tunnel vision. PhDs are trained to become expert in their fields. With such intense focus, PhDs may end up being experts but not know much about other things. For me, I used to have lot more interests before the PhD but after PhD, well, I just really like my research.

Mental illness. There is depression and other kinds of mental illness. Lot of PhDs are super stressed! It is not good for them or their loved ones.

Health issues. Many PhDs sacrifice their health. Many just work with not much exercise, rest, or good diet. That leads to pretty bad health outcomes.


Overly critical. As a PhD, we are taught to analyze and break things down. That is good for research but not so good for real life. I have seen friends argue over simple things just because they could not take a joke but instead had to systematically break it down. In spousal relationships, I have heard a PhD student tell his wife why he is absolutely right by breaking down the argument and doing something like a full presentation. That did not go well for him.
Bias! Most schools teach their PhD students in certain ways. This creates lot of bias. For instance, market efficiency people will literally think that market irrationality people are not smart and even crazy. Because of training, PhD students may have certain strong biases.

Opportunity cost. Many people forego lot of income and fun because of PhD. I know people that could have been VP if they did not do a PhD. They literally give up a lot of money and fun.
Despite all these negative issues, I still enjoyed my PhD. I learned a lot. I learned how little I know. I became more humble. I also learned how to question things and do my best to answer interesting question.


Along the way, I made good friends and I got good life lessons from professors and staff.


So although the PhD was quite intense for me, it was worth it for me.

It’s not uncommon for Yoruba movies to depict handsome man buying or renting a resplendent house/apartment for a strange woman. It’s not uncommon for a man to buy a car as a gift (or a birthday gift) for a woman he just meets. He can take her for shopping at Dubai, and then give her millions to start business.

Many a girl will watch the movies and think the situation is just like that in real life. But only life experiences will teach them the realities.

When a girl comes across a man who loves her, and the man showers her, her friends and family with gifts and money, the girl is lucky indeed.

But in reality, such girls have nothing to offer the man, save the so-called honeypot, which sometimes stinks.

Even most girls cheat on their generous lovers.

Now, what does the man stand to gain in such relationships? The answer is NOTHING. If you go broke, they have no help to render to you, except to jilt you and move on with another man.

That’s when they will tell you: “Calculate all the money you’ve spent on me, and I’ll refund you.”

That’s the most ungrateful thing a woman can say to a man.

He’s done to you, what your daddy cannot do. Yet you say you can refund all he has spent on you. In reality, most girls or their newly-found boyfriends don’t have the ability or intention to refund anything. They’re just bluffing.

No wonder, some girls are suffering in spite of their beauty. Nemesis will catch up with those who end up making their benefactors appear like fools.

No wonder most men don’t want to spend heavily on women again. Ki lo se lo n gbehin ale. Ija lo n gbehin ale. (Meaning, it’s common for a concubine to end up saving to you: What’s the big deal in the help you’ve rendered to me? Splitting is usually the end of love relationships).

Am I crazy to leave a six figure salary to get a PhD in computer science?

While you are not necessarily crazy, this does not sound like a great decision to make. I am not even thinking about whether this makes economic sense, which it probably doesn't, but rather, what can you expect to get from a PhD experience at this point in time.

Let me start by saying that getting a PhD in CS makes perfect sense for a lot of people. Hell, I even got one! But those people are usually in a different situation than yours, as a matter of fact, the PhD will allow them to get to where you are (see Xavier Amatriain's answer to Knowing what you know now, would you still get a PhD if you had the chance to go back and do it over again? Why or why not?).

So, why would someone like you want to get into a PhD? Whenever I talk to people in your same situation (yes, there are many), I hear things like:

I want to do "pure" research.

If I do a PhD I will be able to gain more understanding on topic X

If I get a PhD I will have access to better jobs

I want to publish

I want to eventually become like Yoshua Bengio or one of these other famous Professors/Researchers

They are all ok reasons, but, honestly, they don't stand on their own and they respond mostly to a romantic view of what PhD is than to the harsh reality of PhD life.

As Sean Gerrish pointeed out in his answer, chances that you become that very famous researcher/professor are very slim. You might as well take on baseball, and try to make it to the Major League, for what is worth.

Also, a PhD is very unlikely going to unlock access to better jobs. There are very few places where having a PhD is going to be a requirement (mostly academia). Having a research publication track record might matter to have access to some kind of jobs. Not that I would particularly recommend those jobs. But, if that is your dream, having a few good publications could be a good investment. That said, investing 4+ years of your life for getting a few good publications seems very low ROI to me. It is probably much better to carve some time on the side to collaborate with a research lab or professor you know, take a sabbatical, or even try to publish something you are working on.

Finally, while a PhD is likely to increase your knowledge on a very narrow topic, this is hardly ever useful. I can't tell you how many PhD's I have interviewed who could only talk about one particular aspect, but had forgotten even the most basic things in their knowledge area. Being super knowledgeable about, say, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) while not knowing anything at all about Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) or more basic ML models (e.g. Logistic Regression ) will make you more employable for a very, very small number of jobs.

Also, it is important to note that many people that I have known who want to go back to college to do a PhD they suffer some version of the Impostor syndrome. They feel like they don’t know enough about a given topic, and they feel they will improve by doing a PhD. However, most likely they know as much as any PhD student on the topic, and going through this will not increase their knowledge significantly. Besides, there are probably much more efficient ways to increase knowledge on the topic if that person really needs it.

So, unless you are ok with ending up with adding 4+ years of ok experience just to end up more or less where you are in terms of employment (or worse, taking on a mediocre academic position), my advice would be to keep learning while on the job. I am sure you will have many opportunities to grow in many different directions.

Yesterday morning I was with two other ex-Morgan Stanley guys. One now works as a partner of a distressed-debt fund. The other runs a courier business.

Both have done incredibly well for themselves.

Over breakfast, we discussed the global economy, the impact of technology, Brexit, Morgan Stanley, and many other things.

In everything we discussed there was some disagreement. Except for one thing. All of us were in complete agreement that Alphabet (Google) is the best business in the world. By far.

We all agreed that if we could only own one asset, it wouldn't be gold or silver, or property in London, or US Treasury Bonds. It’d be Alphabet stock.

Its management thinks so long-term, executes so damn well, and gets in all the right spaces. It is just awesome…

Some Christians don’t celebrate birthdays and some do. The only two recorded birthdays in the Bible were celebrated by unbelievers and marked by bloodsheds.

When David said “Teach us how to count our days” he meant we should be taught how to think about our days and years and life, to apply wisdom, to make adjustments and to stop doing what would translate to a wasted life when we draw our last breaths. He didn’t mean we should be taught how to party, drink, boost our ego and do foolish things (that are rampant nowadays).

There are more than 7.5 billion people on earth. You may think something is special about you, but you are wrong. Billions of other people think the same – each person think they’re special.

Over 300,000 people were born on March 9, 2018. Let’s say on March 2045, most of them would still be alive and celebrate their birthdays.

Assuming about 400,000 people were born on March 9, every year. In 20 years, that would be 8 million people.

I celebrate birthdays for my loved ones. But I don’t do that for myself and I don’t want people to do that for me. Why?

People are selfish and self-centered. They want others to care about them, but they don’t care about others. Imagine celebrating someone every year, who has never asked you about your own date of birth.

Most other jobless people try to fill this vacuum by announcing their own birthdays on social media platforms like Facebook, then many of those who don’t really care about you would come online to like and comment. Fake love online.

If I celebrated my birthday on a certain day in June or April or October, I should bear it in mind that millions of other people are doing the same on that particular day. So there’s nothing special about me. Why should I be egocentric?

Happy birthday to the best or the most wonderful wife, dad, hubby, mom, brother, etc. in the world! YOU’RE WRONG!

That person may be the best in your family or village, but not in the world. Another example of illogical flattery.

People are now insane with “birthdays” while they neglect other aspects of life that matter. You may go into debt or do something crazy, to desperately catch attention or inflate your egotistic self. But this is also vanity and running after the wind.

Companies that cheat you or don’t care about you can send automated birthday greetings to you. Remember, it’s automated – it’s impersonal.

I’ve struggled and I’ve risen by my own effort and sweat. No-one came to my aid, save the divine Providence. I don’t want anyone to greet me on my birthday. I don’t want distractions. I got important and productive things to do.

This doesn’t matter, whether I celebrate my birthday or not, it doesn’t add any value to me or my bank accounts (neither does it subtract any value from me or my bank accounts).

To me, every day is unique and I take it as it comes. I don’t have any special days – my date of birth is not an exception.

If you’re successful people will come around you. If you’re not, people will distance themselves from you.

This is my opinion. I know certain readers out there could be parochial in views. I don’t care.
