What's the hardest part about getting older?

At age 55, I find the hardest part about getting older is the mismatch between the internal and the external.

Internally, I haven’t changed all that much from the optimistic, energetic and goofy young woman I was in my 20’s. I am lots wiser than when in my youth due to learning from life experiences; however, at the core, my personality has remained fairly consistent.

I have many ideas for creative projects I would like to initiate, forms of physical exercise I enjoy and want to continue, places I want to see, loved ones I want to communicate with, etc.

I have not lost my adoration of cute shoes, especially strappy retro styles. I would wear them every day if I could.

However…

Externally (physically), my body just doesn’t have the energy and stamina of even 5 years ago.

Menopause has been a particularly difficult portion of the aging process for me. Sometimes I feel like a young adolescent who is enthralled yet horrified at the bodily changes brought about by fluctuating hormones. Where in the hell did this body come from? Some days my inner self just doesn’t seem to fit inside the skin quite as nicely. I find this disconcerting.

Menopause has also meant that my metabolism has slowed. I wasn’t a heavy eater before, and it seems that even my lighter diet contains more calories than my body requires. My increasing waist line is evidence of this state of affairs. At this point I have to decide whether I want to give up my passion for baking, my love of a nice glass of wine between work and dinner prep, or just learn to be happy at a higher weight.

I have developed lax ligaments in the toes of my left foot. This means a special insole in my shoes, which means no more wearing strappy retro styles that I adore so much. Which means that I have to tweak my style of dress to accommodate the kinds of shoes that I can wear. (I am hopeful that my podiatrist can help ameliorate this issue so I can return to my former fashion choices.)

This also means that my beloved Zumba sessions are halted, and maybe even banned forever, as well as the dance videos I incorporated as regular exercise. Dang. And I was just beginning to learn tap dance.

I want to age gracefully. However, I find myself raging a bit on the inside at the sense of injustice that growing older means giving up things that have brought joy to my life.

Let me confess that I like Okro (Okra) soup. Apart from that it has great nutritional value.

Has anyone lived a lie their whole life?

I am a 64-year old man. For the better part of my life, I had to live a lie. Not because I wanted to. I had to. There is no way I can fully explain what it was like growing up in a very abusive home. Knowing, after being told continuously that you were never wanted in the first place. Anything and everything you believed in or wanted to accomplish, you were told you were too stupid to ever achieve. To realize, when you are only 6 years old, you were attracted to your own gender and you did not know why. To fully discover you were gay when you were 14. To know you could never say or admit it to anyone. To have a boyfriend, a lover, who would be the love of your life, and knowing it could never be.

Being discovered who you were at 16 and damn near losing your life over it. Having been beaten before, this beating was ten-times worse than anything you have ever endured. The lie grows. It manifests itself into becoming someone you never were.

Does the lie include deception? In many ways yes. Making every appearance you are straight when you are not. The only truth you had was genuinely falling in love with only one woman. She would eventually discover your lie, yet understood why you never said anything. Why you hid. Why you never removed your shirt. Why you never allowed her or anyone to see your back, let alone your body naked unless it was dark. Why you shied away from people. Why, even with a high intelligence, you chose to act dumber than you were. Why you were never really happy.

I carried a lie until I was 61 years old. I only started admitting it after my wife of 40 years died. That lifetime of lies cost me everything, except for the only grandchild, my oldest grandson, whom I have raised since he was a baby. He is deaf and has ASD, so he does not fully understand what being gay is.

I lost my children, as they disowned me. Friends deserted me, even though they admitted they had suspected I was gay for years. It wasn’t until I came out did it become an issue. I was cast out of my religion.

You see, lies do not get you anywhere. Even the truth can get you hurt, badly. I guess Karma really can be a bitch. She is definitely getting me back in spades. Maybe I should have…?

The logic is: Lawyers want you to pay them for their jobs, and for you to continue doing that as long as they’re working for you… But they don’t want you to give money to the police. They think the police should work for you free.

Perhaps lawyers think if you give money to the police, you may not be left with much to give to them.

I think I get rejected every day.

I got rejected yesterday. I’m not ready to say what it was about but it was something important to me.

I got rejected the day before. Someone I really admired didn’t want to go on my podcast.

I got rejected the day before that. I was doing stand-up comedy and I didn’t get as many laughs as I would’ve liked.

I got rejected the day before that. I wanted my daughter to go with me to Paris and she said, “no” because of school work.

I got rejected the day before that.

I’m not sure what happened to me. Because I still get disappointed after a rejection.

But I know that after a rejection I can ask “why” and I can improve.

After a rejection I can figure out if there’s a “backdoor” that can still get through to the people who say “you can’t”.

After a rejection I can ask experts and mentors (or read about them) and learn from their successes.

After a rejection I can take a walk and look at the beautiful rooftops with gargoyles and gardens and the intimate secret etchings of architects and take a deep breath and appreciate the moments we are allowed to breathe.

After a rejection I can come up with 10 more ideas of ideas I want to work on and use the experiences of failure to become a better person, to have a better chance at success, to work with better people who will contribute to my success (and I to theirs) and to increase my odds of doing what I love.

I say to myself, “If only she had said ‘yes’ yesterday to this project I really wanted. My life would be different!”

I could say that yesterday and still feel the sting. But in a day or two that sting will be over.

And I will be “on to the next one” as Jay-Z says. A billionaire rapper rejected more than anyone.

I used to buy from Jumia and Konga (cash on delivery) when they used to deliver within 4 business days of an order. I stopped using them when they cancelled cash on delivery (for a good reason), and they delayed orders for weeks. I even discovered that their prices are not after all, lower than prices of other physical stores.

I discovered that Slot.ng prices (which specialize on phones) are OK. You can even take phones back to them if there are issues, without the frustrating formalities that will make you go through.

Since I’ve been buying phones from Slot.ng, I’ve not had a cause for a single complaint. Nevertheless, I didn’t fail to notice M-Chris, which probably has more stores than Slot.

I decided to give M-Chris a try. I bought a FERO basic phone (I usually bought phones for people), only for the beneficiary to report to me later, that the battery is very poor. Obviously, the original battery has been removed so that customers would later come to buy original battery with extra cash.

The last time, I bought FERO from Slot, there was no complaint as far as the battery is concerned.

Recently I bought an Infinix Hot 6 from M-Chris, only for the phone to go off the following day, after it has been charged fully. I returned the phone, and I got another one after 2 weeks.

But I’ve made a decision, I won’t buy phones from M-Chris again, although I need to confess that their customers support is OK.
