You get a haircut every few weeks. Everyone does. Men, women, children. Even balding men need a trim occasionally (as I’m finding out, sadly).

But what if I told you that you’ve been doing this all wrong?

What if I told you that your barber, or hairdresser, is terribly under-qualified. That you have been risking your hair — which is just a few centimeters from your brain, after all — to an under-educated, under-trained amateur.



What if I insisted you were making a huge mistake in your barber choice. Instead of your current choice, you should choose another kind of haircutter. A better one. This one should be qualified. He (or she) should be properly educated. He should hold a Ph.D.

If I told you that, what would you say?

You’d say I was crazy.

Because having a Comparative Literature degree from a French university has absolutely nothing to do with how you perform at cutting hair. Of course.

But wait a second. Such “crazy” advice is given to us every day. Very smart people, with net worths of millions of dollars… even billions of dollars… regularly follow similar advice.

I’m speaking about the hedge-fund industry. This is an industry that manages almost a trillion dollars of civilization’s wealth. The role of the hedge fund is to produce “alpha” — a fancy way to say that it is asked to produce “market-beating returns.” If you are a wealthy person who, over her lifetime has earned ten million dollars, you prefer not to leave all your cash sitting in a bank, earning negative interest rates, after inflation. You want your wealth to earn a return. And so you give a portion of it to a hedge fund.

Thus the “hedge fund industry” plays an important role in the financial world.

You would think, wouldn’t you, that the people who run hedge funds would want to hire the most talented traders and analysts to work at their firm. You would think that hedge-fund customers would insist upon such a thing. You would think that hedge-fund hiring departments would scour the world, looking for smart people who have creative and interesting ideas about how to manage money — how to create those market-beating returns while controlling risk.

Except… none of this is true.

In fact, the world of hedge funds is bizarrely insular. If you do not live in New York, if you do not live in London, if you did not win the birth lottery by being born in an English-speaking country, if you did not go to Harvard, if you did not get a job at Goldman… well, then, good luck getting a job at a hedge fund. I suppose you can apply, but… don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

Which is strange, when you think about it, because all those qualities: where you live, what language you speak, what name is on your diploma, whether you held a job at Goldman Sachs — all of those things are entirely unrelated to how you will perform as a trader or investor.

In other words, the hedge-fund industry operates as if it thinks all hair-cutters must hold Literature Ph.D.’s from the Sorbonne.

Everyone in the industry knows this is absurd — that the performance of any new hire is orthogonal to where a person went to school, or even if he did; or to where a person held her last job.

I’ll take this a step further. Really smart hedge-fund operators ought to know that hiring one more me-too Harvard ex-Goldman prop trader will generate, at best, me-too performance. Every Goldman clone will have similar “ideas,” will look in the same places for financial opportunities, will pile into the same lame trades, will follow the same stampeding herd.

Here’s an idea. What if we hired hair-cutters who were actually good at… cutting hair?

My company, Collective2, has a mission. It’s a simple one. We are going to destroy the entire hedge-fund industry. We are going to tear it down, burn it to ash, plow salt into its earth.

We think that anyone can generate alpha.

No, not that everyone can… simply that anyone might:

That guy in India, who didn’t win the lottery by being born near Manhattan, but who can code algos to predict market movements.

That doctor in Boston, who has a full time job helping humans live longer, and who has utterly no desire to work at a hedge fund, thank you very much; …but who notices that one particular pharma company’s sales reps seem to be applying high-pressure sales tactics, and who therefore decides to short its stock.

That Chicago-School economist, whose ten years of research have shown him that cartels inevitably collapse, and who therefore shorts oil futures, knowing that OPEC’s latest “production quota” announcement is just a bunch of hot air.

Here’s the thing about trading performance. It’s the one job in the world where it’s obvious who’s good at it, and who’s not. You simply look at the person’s track record. Nothing else matters. Not where a person lives. Not which company he worked at five years ago. The performance matters. That’s it. Period. Full stop.

I’m actually blown away that most people end up having kids. I look at having children as a burden onto my ridiculously free lifestyle.

I have no obligations or responsibilities except to myself. I will end up saving millions of dollars. I will save hours and hours of time to do more exciting things like travel around the world and watch really cool old movies. I will be able to fulfill my life’s purpose of helping people form better relationships with each other.

And yes, I understand that I don’t realize the wild, unconditional love I could feel for having a kid.

I don’t want to have to feel such love for my kids in the same way that I don’t want to feel such addiction to heroin. I’m sure it feels amazing to watch my offspring run around, but I’d rather just avoid the whole situation altogether and do stuff that I want to do.

And yes, I understand that kids will take care of me when I’m old. But guess what? I’m going to be really rich when I’m old, so I won’t need a kid to take care of me. Plus, I would love to relieve them of that obligation in the first place.

I am simply too selfish to have kids.

Plus, my little sister is going to have kids, and I’m going to be coolest, most loving uncle anyone’s ever met! And then, after I’ve played with my little nieces and nephews, I can go home and do whatever the hell I want—alone!

Lastly, I just don’t feel strongly enough about wanting to carry-on my lineage. I’ll be dead by then, so I don’t give a shit. It doesn’t matter to me. When I die, that’s the end of the world for me. It’s the end of my narrative. And carrying-on my lineage is not a big enough sell if I can’t actually watch it happen for eternity.

As you ask me why I don’t want any kids, I think the more interesting question is why do you actually want kids?

If Saudi Arabia and Israel went to war, who would win?



Israel, beyond a doubt.

Having worked with many Saudi military personnel over the course of my professional career, I can assure you that a fair percentage of their officer candidates are incompetent, unqualified, undisciplined, and totally dependent on the skills of the vast army of expatriate technicians and Western advisers to operate and maintain their most basic equipment. Some of the individual enlisted personnel take their jobs seriously, but that’s all most of them look at it as: a job. Back when I worked in Saudi the actual operational readiness and size of individual units fluctuated because they were dependent on who showed up for work on any given morning(!)

There is no pressure for the officer candidates to perform well in their technical examinations due to the fact most are guaranteed their positions anyway due to nepotism. The day the Saudis actually hold their officer corps to a reasonable standard of professional competence is the day they will finally have a chance at beating the IDF. It didn’t matter if an officer candidate failed all the tests I gave him, he would still pass the course with nary a word. Nobody took their coursework seriously and this reflected the lax standards of the Saudi military on the whole. They’re terribly complacent.

It doesn’t matter how motivated the enlisted men are, without good leadership the Saudi military is doomed in any conflict it attempts to pursue.

With regards to the overdependence on Western expatriate advisers, generally speaking their training does little good because like I said, many of the Saudi officers fail to take it seriously. The overdependence on Western technicians to maintain all the tanks, radar equipment, missile batteries, etc is also problematic because the first time the Saudis have to go to war without them they’ll be completely clueless. Case in point are the number of Saudi military vehicles abandoned in the Yemen war with easily rectifiable technical problems. The Saudis are inadequately trained in conducting field repairs or recovery efforts, so they simply abandon the vehicle and move on. This will result in greater attrition and eventually cripple their war effort against a foe with similar conventional capabilities and a better grasp of logistics, like the IDF.

Don’t get me wrong, the Saudis have some cutting-edge military equipment, the best oil money can buy. Some of their weapons are most likely more sophisticated than anything the IDF can put into the field. But superiority in equipment means nothing if the Saudis lack skilled personnel or leadership adept at deploying, operating, and maintaining it effectively. As it is the leadership are likely to misuse their excellent equipment and the operators are likely to handle it incompetently.

The Saudi Air Force - which is the branch of the armed forces where one assumes technical competence is taken seriously - was a joke among expat workers when I lived down there.

A few incidents which have been mentioned here on Quora before include the one where the fighter pilot pulled the ejector lever while still in the hangar, killing himself, and the fighter pilot that crashed in the desert after refusing to refuel from a female USAF crew. Most incidents involving Saudi Air Force crashes are due to pilot error, but the Saudi government usually blames the aircraft instead and cites mechanical problems (unlikely, given how well-maintained the aircraft are due to the efforts of the most competent US, British, and French technicians oil money can buy). This has made the Saudis blind to the fact that their pilots are the problem, and need to be held to a higher standard. The IDF does not have this problem and Israeli fighter pilots have a reputation for being some of best in the Middle East.

These are issues that can be corrected with time, but the fact remains that the Saudi military is in need of major reforms before it would have a prayer of engaging and defeating the IDF.

These people who feel higher than you may come around and be more attentive to you and start doing good when you are down low.

But, as soon as you’re getting better, get a new job, make more money, find a new great relationship, in any area spiritually, physically, emotionally. If you start to excel outside of that little box that you were in before, then that person may begin to pull away. They may begin to to do things that they normally did not do before - give you the silent treatment, withdraw, be more unavailable, not answering your phone calls, not returning your emails,… They won’t be there for you when you make a party because you found a new job, they won’t answer your call to hear how happy you are with your new love relationship.

The truth is: Placing an advert on Nairaland does not automatically make a company legit. Even I know a popular exchanger who used to advertise regularly on Nairaland, but the man is a wicked, corporate thief.

About two years ago I started a list called “Things I wish I had known earlier” in my journal.

I initially came up with 25 lessons about life, career, love, and relationships. Things I’ve learned from mentors, books, friends, readers, etc.
I created the list for myself because I realized that I forgot important lessons at the same rate I learned new lessons.

And when I shared the list on my blog for the first time, a lot of people thought it was useful. Two years later, I still read the list a few times a year. Plus, I added new lessons I’ve learned recently.


Here’s the latest edition. I hope you find it useful.

1. Struggle Is Good
Never say “I can’t take it anymore.” Say “Bring it on!”

2. Don’t Complain
Complaining is the biggest waste of time there is. Either do something about it, and if you can’t, shut up about it.

3. Always Strive For Something
When you wake up in the morning, think about what you’re trying to achieve. Humans need a vision to wake up every morning. After you picture your vision, go after it. Every day.

4. Spend Time With People You Love
That’s your family and best friends. If you don’t have a family, create one. Most people in life are only visitors. Family is for life.

5. Don’t Start A Relationship If You’re Not In Love
I’ve done this more than once. You kind of like someone and think: “We might as well give it a shot.” Not a good idea. You’re either in love, or you are not. Don’t fool yourself. It’s not fair to you and the other person.

6. Exercise Daily
A healthy body is where you have to start everything in life. If you can’t build a healthy and strong body, what can you build in life?

7. Keep A Journal
No, keeping a journal is not for children. It helps you to become a better thinker and writer. “I don’t want to be a writer” you might think. Well, how many emails and texts do you send a day? Everybody is a writer.

8. Be Grateful
Say ‘thank you’ to everyone and everything. “Thank you for this beautiful day.” “Thank you for your email.” “Thank you for being there for me.”

9. Don’t Care About What People Think
We all die in the end, do you really think it matters what people think of you?

10. Take More Risks
Don’t be such a wimp. Seriously.

11. Pick An Industry, Not A Job
If you want to become good at something, you need to spend years and years doing that. You can’t do that if you hop from industry to industry. Pick an industry you love and start at the bottom. You will find the perfect role for you eventually.

12. Lead The Way
When you find yourself in a situation where everyone looks at each other, it’s time for you to lead. You‘re a leader when you decide to become one. There’s no initiation or a title. Just a decision.

13. Things Are Not What They Seem
If something sounds too good to be true, it is. A little skepticism never hurts.

14. Money Is Not The Most Important Thing
You have to train yourself not to care about money and focus on providing value instead. Also, don’t become too dependent on the stuff you own — otherwise, the stuff will own you.

15. Be Nice
I don’t mean you should be a pushover. You can be someone that doesn’t take shit and be nice about it. Just don’t insult people, think you’re better than them, or act like an idiot.

16. Strain Yourself
Take on challenging things in your life. No strain no gain.

17. Get Comfortable With Being Uncomfortable
Life, work, relationships, challenges. It’s all uncomfortable. So get comfortable with that.

18. Learn Every Day
You’ve got to train your brain to stay alert. You don’t have to read a book a day to learn every day. Learn from your mistakes. Learn from the people around you — be open to what they can teach you.

19. Rest Before You Are Tired
Even if you love your job, and every day seems like a holiday, you need to take time to rest. You’re a human and not an android, never forget that.

20. Don’t Judge
Just because people make different choices than you, they are not stupid. Also, you don’t know everything about people, so don’t judge them — help them.

21. Value Yourself
“Who am I to say something?” Well, you’re a human being who wakes up every morning and contributes something to this world. You have the right to say and do anything you want. Recognize that.

22. Have Patience
Rome wasn’t built in a day, right? But that’s too obvious. Rome also wasn’t built in a year, or even two years, or even five years. Some things take decades to make happen. How’s that for your perspective?

23. Think About Others
Just be mindful, that’s all. We all have families, bills to pay, and our own issues. Don’t always make everything about yourself.

24. Give Without Expecting Something In Return
Don’t keep score. You will become a bitter person if you do that. Give solely for the joy of giving. If you get something in return, great, if you don’t, great.

25. There’s No End Game
We, as a species, just are. Don’t try to figure it all out. Enjoy your journey.

26. Enjoy Small Things
I like clichés because they are true. Especially this one. You know why? Everyone says they know it, but no one lives up to it. They just chase big things.

27. Don’t Take Yourself Seriously
Yeah, yeah, you’re an individual, and people have to take you seriously, I get it. But at the end of the day, we’re all a bunch of ants trying to chase the same things. Lighten up.

28. Take On More Responsibilities
Sounds paradoxical (like many things in life), but believe me on this one. The more responsibilities you have, the more purpose you have in life. Just don’t get overwhelmed. You’re not that important.

29. Don’t Blame People
What’s the point? Do you want to punish them? You don’t do that to people. Also, don’t blame yourself — you’re only human.

30. Never Look Back Too Long
Reflecting on the past is only good for one thing: Learning.

31. It’s Okay To Be Sad
Life’s not always great. We all know that. But why do we pretend we’re okay while we’re not? Because we’re too proud. If you’re not doing well, admit it. Now, you can work on getting better.

32. Avoid Negative Situations And People
You can’t underestimate the impact others have on you. Get away from negativity at all cost.

33. Invest In Yourself
Skills are worth more than a good job, career, money, and even a reputation.Why? The world always needs people who can do something well. Be that person.


34. Rely On Yourself
Because it’s the best feeling in the world to know you can figure things out by yourself. But don’t overdo it. Ask for help when you need it.

35. Don’t Listen To “No”
The best things in life only happened after people heard “no.” Did they quit? No.


36. Buy A House
A lot of wealthy people say they never buy a property to live in it because it’s not an investment. They’re right. But a lot of people still don’t care because they like to own the house they live in. I agree. And if you move on, rent it out. It’s an investment.

37. Hold Yourself To A High Standard
When you do something, do it well or not at all. Always strive for outperforming yourself.


38. Create Something
Not to leave a legacy, you won’t be here to see it anyway, but to be of use. Make music, write a book, build a table, anything. You’ll feel good about yourself, plus you give something back to people to use or enjoy.

39. Take Action
Don’t just sit there, do something. Without action, there is no outcome.


You might know a lot. But just like Socrates, who believed he knew nothing, you and I also know nothing at all.
So we have to keep learning.
