What knowledge does the wealthy 10 percent understand that the other 90 percent are missing?

That big money is served in small increments. Whether that's ROI on investments, profits, margins on products you're selling, whatever. People who don’t understand this are always trying to double or quintuple their money in as few transactions as possible, while the largest and most successful companies and people in the world win by making “small money” over and over again.

That wages and income are about what the job is worth, not the individual. As a person, as a human being, your value is immeasurable. If you went missing in the woods our society would easily spend five or six figures trying to find and rescue you, without hesitation. But dude, putting a sticker on a box is still only worth $5. If that. Your income potential isn't about what you need or what the employer can afford, it's about the value of what you do. Those who are in the upper income brackets have understood and embraced this reality and have worked to bring something of value to the market or their company.

That personal debt is not a “tool”, it's shackles - delayed gratification is more gratifying than instant gratification. If you can't pay cash, you can't afford it. That guy you know making $70,000 per year driving an $80,000 BMW and carrying $15,000 in credit card debt looks like he's well off, but he's an idiot. His entire paycheck is gone by the end of the month, and none of that stuff is his. He's basically just renting it from the bank. He’s paying more annually in interest than he’s earning in his IRA. One hiccup in his income and the bank takes it all back, making all the money he's paid thus far for nothing. But the guy who saved up and paid cash? His savings account grows every month and no one will ever show up and take his stuff.

The value of the dollars you have vs unearned future dollars. Those people who got a “great deal” on IKEA furniture or faux leather couches will be buying another one sooner than the person who bought quality goods. And the thing is, the people who cheap out know that when they buy it. They rationalize it by saying “If I get 3 years out of it, that's fine, I can buy a better one later when I can afford it.” When you do this, you're basically deciding to throw away the money you have and committing future dollars you haven’t even earned yet. A smarter decision: save a little longer and spring for quality goods that don’t need to be replaced so quickly.

Math. The broke girl really wanted a particular dress, but it was over $100 and she didn't have it. When the dress went on sale for 20% off, she rushed to one of those payday advance places and borrowed the money to get it. The interest on those type of loans of course negated the savings. But she didn't care, and justified it by thinking “Oh well, it's the same money anyway”. She didn’t realize that the problem wasn't how she bought the dress…

The importance of life insurance. I won’t get into the personal responsibility argument about leaving your loved ones to fend for themselves... The point is that life insurance is hands-down the easiest and lowest-impact way to pass wealth on to the next generation. For a few measly dollars a month, your kids can be millionaires (or at least hundred thousand-aires). Even someone who will never make enough money in their lifetime to buy a home and dies broke and penniless could leave enough to get all of their grandkids through medical school. It’s a total no-brainer, and you can afford it. If you’re retired, your adult children should be paying the bill for you. Stop making excuses.

That lotteries are just another tax on the poor. You do realize the government keeps half of it, right? That’s before the winner is taxed. Yep, that $7 million jackpot really represents $14 million in actual lottery ticket sales, so you’re basically just voluntarily paying more taxes. You won’t see the 10% standing in line buying lottery tickets. Even during the big jackpots. Your odds of winning are one in 292 million - that’s 0.0000003425% - and yet there are people who drop $20 per week, every week for forty years or more hoping one day it will be their turn. That same money invested from ages 20 to 60 would be worth $300k on their 60th birthday, even with the most conservative market estimates. Or another way to look at it - you could turn $40k into $300k simply by not playing the lottery. It’s dumb. Stop doing it.

Above all… If you can commit to living within your means, your means will increase over time. Feeling broke today? Look at your paycheck. Now imagine you didn't have to spend all of that on car payments and a house that's bigger than what you need, and the credit card payments on all the stuff you bought to fill it. Just imagine that whole paycheck staying in your bank account and not going out the door to those payments…

You aren't so bad off anymore, are you?

Now imagine what your savings account would look like in just one year if you threw it all there and forgot about it. Because that's where you could be, if you thought about money differently.

Successful people know it’s not about how much you make, it’s about how you spend it.

I'm seeing this pretty late. However, I'll register.

I'm about to finish my college education in less than one month and had worked as a loan officer for more than 4 months. Last month I quit my job and prepared to start my freelancing life as a web developer ( I major in English and Finance, not computer science) because the life of working for a company made me realise how inefficient and boring it was to have others controlling my time and work schedule.

However, two days ago, all of a sudden my parents called to ask me to go back to my hometown and a relative has arranged a well-paid job for me (They still don't know that I plan to be a freelancer, they would go nuts if they knew).

I respect my parents' opinion and know that they think they are making the best choice for me. I don't know what would happened if I follow my passion but I know for certain that if I go back home, I would live a normal life like my brothers, my cousins and most of my fellow classmates, and then have an arranged marriage in less than one year or two, which I think is the official end of my life.

I've turn my parents down by promising that I will earn 10,000 RMB/month in two years. I'm 25 and I set the goal of earning more than 10,000 RMB/month by the end of September,2013, that's less than 4 month, because I know my parents wouldn't have the patience to wait for 2 years. If I can't prove myself to be a man who can take on the responsibility by earning enough money quickly, they would push me to marry or take another job.

My family have sacrifice a lot to support me to go to college and I'm the hope of the family of 8. I don't dare to let them down, how can I achieve my goal ? Is it even possible?

Abass Akande Omorapala Obesere has been in the music industry for more than 30 years, and he’s used that name since its inception.

I’ve long wondered what the meaning of OBESERE is. In the early 1990s, he sang that Obesere may be then name of his dad or mum, but I know that’s not an original Yoruba name.

In most interviews granted by Abaass Akande, I’ve not seen any interviewer asking the meaning of the OBESERE, since that’s not part of his real official name. If I’d heard him being asked such a question, I’m sure he would have answered.

I got no access to him, and I know he’s millions of fans all over the world (I’m one of them). I think some of his fans here would know the meaning.

A software engineer in my team doesn't know how to clean up her computer filled with malware. Should I get my boss to fire her?
I believe she should know how to do such basic things.

If I were your boss and you came up to me with such a suggestion I would most likely:
Fire you.
Fire the person that conducted the behavioral interview and gave you a hire.
Does that surprise you? Unfortunately, it probably does, so let me elaborate.

I read people relatively well. However, it doesn't take a fine people-reader to understand that someone who doesn't have a problem to shallowly evaluate people based on their own beliefs regarding a single thing they believe they should or shouldn't know is, most likely, a terribly arrogant person with a superiority complex. Additionally, I do not read your intent as optimizing the team for the good of the company - I am reading it as "by pointing out other people's weaknesses to my superiors, I will gain their trust and advance quicker at the expense of the misfortune of my team-mate". So, you're basically optimizing for yourself and will sacrifice a potentially fine software engineer in order to do so. I may even speculate that you want to grow a more personal relationship with your boss in order to come to a position where you could do less, or worse, and get away with it.

I would never want to see such immature, toxic, cognitive patterns in my team members. You are there, together, for a reason, and you must be able to rely on each other, for better or worse. If you cannot have the basic trust in your team-mates, or the basic good will to help your team-mates when they are struggling, or, perhaps most importantly, the decency to face them first when you have issues, instead of immediately running to your manager - then you will most likely be the reason that the entire team will fail, when facing difficult times, regardless of your potential engineering superiority. So, I can't have that. You're awesome, man, and you apparently know that all too well, but I can't have you here because you need to grow up and learn how to behave in a society.

One last note - as others have pointed out - cleaning up her machine, installing software, etc. is not a software engineer's job. I have too much of my own debugging to do, so that I do not have the time and I do not want to spend my time debugging anything else, including hardware, OS, drivers, common software, etc. I just call people whose job is to keep machines running well and move on to the next thing on my plate.

Hi! This will be a short answer because, from my personal experience, it's a simple thing for me to explain. I'm not a doctor so this will be a non medical answer. My husband died eight months ago of cancer and, though he was in no pain at all and never asked for painkillers, which he loved by the way, he knew he was about to die because he had absolutely no energy left whatsoever. His body was shutting down over a period of about three weeks and with every day that passed he became more and more still and uninterested in anything but breathing.

Obviously, this differs from person to person, but I think that when the body begins to change so much from what we've always known, we feel that difference and can feel that we are too weak to get better. One other thing, which is just my opinion. Usually, when someone is close to death, people begin to arrive to say their last good byes or, in my husband's case I began to stay at the hospital twenty four hours a day. The dying person sees all of this attention all of a sudden and the attention, together with how the person is feeling are a message to him or her that the time to leave us is arriving soon. This is a terribly sad experience and it's best to have someone present to give comfort to the loved ones who remain. I had no one and the anguish was and still is, unbearable. I hope I've been able to answer your question in my own small way. Bye!!

I am making this addition to my original answer :Since I wrote this, I've received sincere condolences and have read some of the most intense and heartbreaking stories of losing loved ones that I have ever read in my life!!!! I know that I'm having a hard time, but I'm ashamed to say that I just didn't realize (not because of stupidity or selfish reasons) how many of us are suffering or have suffered the loss of someone who meant the world to us.

As I read your kind responses and encouragement and the stories of all of you who are still suffering now, in this moment, as I am, I feel totally overwhelmed and, even if this sounds like a line from a story book or something, I have this intense desire to give every single one of you a giant hug!! I'm not a hugging type of person either, but I think that we *all * need one!!

You really, really can't imagine how emotionally close to all of you that I feel!! I need to say two more things here :As I said in the comment that I added, I am, for some reason, not notified by Quora of every response. Since I wrote the comment, though, I've learned how to check for them. I will respond to everyone. It may take time, so please, please forgive me and know that I am reading EVERYTHING!!! I am also “absorbing “everything I read. It's not just like a quick passover of the message and it's over with. No, in fact, I'm thinking about you all during the day rather than myself. So, please know that you have written some powerful accounts of what you have been through and I hope that many people are reading them, as I am, and are realizing what common experiences we have without even realizing it sometimes. The final thing is to explain why it will take me a little more time to respond.

I didn't want to sound too depressing when I originally wrote, so I didn't mention this. When Jack (my husband who's name was Giacomo in Italian) died, we went through a period of the last three weeks before his death that I wouldn't wish on the devil himself!! The very concise version is that he had been promised a hospital bed on a “first available “ emergency basis by doctors whom we had trusted for twelve years. Instead, he was left to die of hunger and thirst on our sofa (actually a tiny love seat with no arms so you can imagine that!!) for nine days before I finally, against his wishes, freaked out totally and called an ambulance. He wasn't physically able to ingest food or any liquid but water. In those nine days he ingested a total of 3/4 of a litre of water and nothing more. He was completely conscious.

I have decided, for my own sanity, to write a report to the hospital about the various and horrible, horrible failures on their part, in the death of the most wonderful person I've ever known. There were also people, though, who went above and beyond normal care and I'll write about them too!! My point is that on Monday I will be beginning to write the story of this (for us) tragedy. Since, I want this to be taken seriously by the hospital I'm having an Italian friend help me with writing it in perfect Italian. All of this is going to take up the entire next week of my time and my emotions.

I wanted to explain this only so that you would understand why it's taking me so long to get back to you. I will still be reading any and all replies here with the total and complete respect that I have had for every one of your responses from day one!!! I really appreciate everyone's patience and I just want to make sure that you know that I feel very honored that you have chosen to share your experiences with me (and I hope with many others) and somehow your sadness has opened my eyes to the fact that I may have been too self absorbed (in grief) to realize that I am far from the only person who has had a bad time (to put it very mildly!). Few examples:

I arrived at six.
Hmm.. sounds right.

I jogged at six.
Nah..that's weird.
I was jogging at six or I went to jog at six. Yup that's right.

So for verbs that refer to a prolonged activity, the past tense should have a period/duration qualifier and not a point in time.

That is why I can say, I slept through the day.
But not I slept at six.

Edit:

I went to sleep at six.

"Sleep" here is more of a noun than a verb, as in the sentence "I went to bed at 6" . It acts a state of being rather than an action. The verb in this sentence is "went".

P.S: I am one of those non-native English speakers who used the same phrase ..till I read this question.

Even there are many scammers roaming Nairaland. They won't like this post.

When I first wrote this in a column in the Financial Times in 2005 I got a lot of hate mail. People thought I was trying to ruin the younger generation.

Zero people agreed with me.

There was no discussion. People simply thought I was stupid (maybe I am).
Now I think it’s time for a “discussion”. Student loan debt is higher than $1.5 trillion. That means the head start that college was supposed to give is now a detriment.

But what if it’s free or cheap, many people ask me.

Doesn’t matter. Spend the four years really learning skills that are useful. If you want to learn the great liberal arts alongside those skills there are MANY online courses you can take for cheap or free.

The landscape has changed since a generation ago. The landscape has changed even since five years ago.

But still… most parents want to send their kids to college. Have them waste the four years, and even the money. Get into debt. “It will pay off,” they think, even though the data is that incomes for people ages 18-35 have been going straight down for 25 years.

And kids want to go. Their friends are going. So they will go. It’s hard to get in the middle between an 18 year old and their 50 best friends (believe me, I’m trying).

But…ten years from now it won’t be just a discussion, it will finally be a valid choice. I am sure of this. The direction of everything points to this. Higher debt, declining salaries, the decreasing importance of certification, the increased importance of skills, the alternatives in online education, and finally, less corporations requiring the degree.

They all point to one direction: less college, more skills, more real learning.
Today I talk about this with my close friend and one of the best internet marketers on the planet. There’s only one way to figure out what to do with your life.
It’s simple.
Just look at today. Or do less than that. Just look at this moment.

What sets your heart on fire. What section of the bookstore would you be willing to read every book. What did you LOVE at age 14 and how has that love aged? College won’t teach you what you love. Only experience and trying will teach you.

“If you can afford to send your kids to college, and they want to go so they don’t have to be encumbered by all this debt, and they want to be a doctor, a lawyer, an engineer, an astronaut, one of these things where you do need a degree, then great,” Ryan said. “But to go to college because you’re still trying to figure out who you want to be… that’s a terrible place to figure that out and insanely expensive.”

I offered my daughter “The Altucher Fellowship:” There are just two rules. 1. skip college (or a do a gap year). I’ll pay her to do whatever she wants for just a year. 2. She has to publish a book of essays (because I think she’s a good writer with potential).
She said “no.”
I told Ryan. He said I’m screwed.
“The reality is you were screwed from the beginning because it’s your daughter, so she’s going to be smart. All kids are going to rebel at 18. They can’t help but take the opposing position to their parents… Just accept the fact that you’re screwed.”


2. MYTH: It’s an investment in your future
Ryan said, “I think, as a parent, you’ve got to help your children not just make good education decisions… but also help them make good financial decisions.”

“It’s not a great financial decision for an 18-year-old, who really doesn’t know what they want to do when they grow up, to enter into six-figures worth of debt on something that may or may not ROI.”

There are other options… Every job requires skills training. Even if you have a college degree, you still need training.

I went to college for computer science. Then my masters. And when I got a job, they didn’t know what to do with me. I wasn’t up to date. I had to go to remedial school.

And it’s the same for today.
Look at Facebook. If you take social media marketing 101 today, by the time you graduate, everything you learned is outdated. They just changed the algorithm a few weeks ago. And they’ll probably change it again. Which means a lot of businesses are already behind.

So if you invest the time to always know what these changes are you’ll be able to pivot. And you’ll collect a paycheck.

That’s a viable investment.


3. MYTH: College Degree = Success
“A college degree is not a prerequisite to success or happiness in life,” Ryan said.

And he’s right. Many of the most successful people I know didn’t go to college.
It’s hard to stop believing something that was told you to all your life. That’s why people got upset when pluto wasn’t a planet anymore.

Beliefs are ideas. And ideas are the currency of the future. So if your ideas are based around an old way of thinking, your ideas will be that too… old.

“The promise that was made to millennials—the same one that was made to me, and probably the same one that was made to you—“Go to college. You’ll get a good job,” simply isn’t true anymore.”

If you want to be successful you need to spend at least 1% of your day doing what you love. And then combine that with something else you love. And soon you’ll be the best and most successful person at that intersection.


P.S. – This is the new promise…
You can’t rely on any government, bank, or educational institution. Any institution that makes money when you borrow money.


They will advertise, “improve yourself” and try to lend you money.


They are primarily designed to make the rich richer and the poor poorer.
Do this instead…reinvent yourself

The world is changing quickly. A few years ago we didn’t have tablets or smartphones. Now a billion+ people have it.

A few years ago we didn’t have search engines. Now everyone has all the knowledge in the world at their fingertips.

A lot of people are making money from this…reinvent yourself and you will too.

Today: you need to start learning new skills, practicing new efforts, trying on new careers for size.

Christianity generally doesn’t allow polygamy, but Islam allows it.

I’ve seen Christians who unofficially have sired children through many women, and I’ve seen a Christian woman who have been married illegally or unofficially to several men in their lifetime.

Some devout Muslims have decided to remain monogamous throughout their life; while some Muslim women would never allow their husbands to marry another wife (despite knowing that Quran endorses it).

Hi, I’m a hermaphrodite

I was born with both male and female genitals. Unfortunately the testicles were found to produce no sperm (underdeveloped). Whether my ovaries have eggs is still unknown.

Based on my own situation, cases in the medical literature and personal contacts with other hermaphrodites, I can say that it is indeed possible for some hermaphrodites to get pregnant. This fully depends on which organ configuration they were born with, though.

Maybe I’ll end up being able to get pregnant as well, but that will take more medical research, something which unfortunately is hard to find with how few physicians have the faintest clue of people like us.

What would happen if the US attacked North Korea? North Korea would gain sympathy from certain powerful nations, which would show secret support and supply to North Korea. Unless the US uses nuclear weapons, which is forbidden, the war would drag on, and on. It would result in stalemate.

Eventually, America would discover that they are fighting against external mercenaries and influences. They would have wasted lots of soldiers and money. The USA is heavily in debt (to the tunes of trillion of dollars). They should avoid going further heavily in debt. They should try to do things to better lives of their citizens, rather than engaging in senseless war that is prohibitively expensive.

Let the US learn from history. If they start a war they cannot win, that would embolden other enemies to defy the US.

Let them continue to slam sanctions against North Korea, but they should avoid open conflict with the country.
