Lagos, Nigeria: Why will Lagosians rather cross the busy highway than use the pedestrian bridge?


There are a number of reasons for this.

1) Impatience: Sometimes climbing the footbridge means walking back a little distance. Most people simply see this as a greater inconvenience than getting hit by a speeding truck.

2)Fear of heights.

3)Lack of trust in the structure of the bridge: Some of those bridges look like death traps, eg the bridges on Herbert Macauley way. You actually cannot blame people for being afraid of falling 10 feet into onrushing traffic.

4) "L'effet Mouton": Also known as the herd mentality. It takes a lot of mental courage to use a bridge when 30 other people are trying to cross the same road without it. There is the slight pull of "do I think I am smarter than them" that occurs when one decides to do things differently.

5) Insecurity on the bridges: Most of the bigger pedestrian bridges are home to vagrants and all sorts of people and can be especially scary at night or during the rush hour.

6) Poor Orientation/ illiteracy/ Pseudo-literacy

There are other reasons. I think a good solution to this problem would be a good sensitization program that takes people's legitimate and crazy seeming fears into cognizance.

Also some of these issues like insecurity and rickety bridges should also be tackled to ensure a good user experience on the bridge. This could be the best form of orientation as a user with a good experience on the bridge can become the best advocate for it.

For web , I think there is no better choice than JavaScript . Nodejs for backend , React js for frontend

Mobile Apps : Swift and Java , Kotlin are already preety famous so you can go with them . But I believe you are lazy like most of us , so you need something that covers both iOS and android . OK then here comes , React Native which helps you write native apps on both iOS and android

with JavaScript . So react native could be a good choice for you if you wanna go for app development

Desktop Apps : Obviously c# is a good choice but we are lazy na ? So we have Electron which helps you write desktop apps with JavaScript . So you can either go with c# or electron. It's upon you

Games : C# and c++ aren't going anywhere here . Have a good look at game engines like Unity .

To make a change in Nigeria, you would have to deprive some greedy people of their billions of dollars, ergo you need to step on some toes, when a BILLIONIER soaked in corrupt practices and surrounded by thugs and assassins tries to step on your toes, you and your family might not survive. I believe president Muhamadu Buhari wants to make a better Nigeria, but how many people like him are in service today?

Nope. There's no genocide in Nigeria - only that some disgruntled people like to exaggerate issues.

Why would someone who has a very high IQ achieve nothing worthwhile in their life?

I worked with a lady whose teenage son was supposedly tested with a 180+ IQ. He also was on the CARS scale, but barely. According to her, he was sought after by government agencies and universities. He graduated high school at 14, graduated college with a BA at 16, and went to law school. Unexpectedly, he showed up at home one day sometime after his 18th birthday and announced that he was done with school.

Hoping to scare him back to college, his mother and father threatened him that he'd have to earn money and pay rent. He went to work mowing lawns and laying sod. While there's nothing wrong with that, more (as in money-earning potential) was expected of him. His mother was very upset with his sudden lack of interest in college. She begged him to return, but he stood his ground and refused. He soon got his own apartment.

He met a pretty girl through his lawn work, married her, had a couple kids, and seems very happy and content with his life choices.

Still today, coworkers will mention him with pity, like he is a failure. In what way? He's not rich? He's not solving world hunger? Well, he's loved, has healthy children, and is happy. I think that's more worthwhile than what a lot of us ever achieve.

I go to a private Jesuit school. The school can make tons of ridiculous rules but nothing beats this one.

You see this?


That's an elevator.

The school administrators had one built in the campus for convenience since the High School building spans for 5 floors. They increased our tuition fees just to build this.

Now, we were excited that we were going to have an elevator. Doing 5 flights of stairs every day as a senior was tiring, especially from the fact that the canteen resides at the first floor.

Other facilities (library, soccer field, sports complex) are even too far yet we have to walk there as fast as we could during our activities so we could save time. The elevator would definitely make it easier for the students to run some errands.

But, guess what? Students are not allowed to use it. Only the teachers, the maintenance staff, and the administrators are allowed.

They say we should just take the stairs since it's beneficial to our health and to cut the costs for the electricity since our school has a reputation of being eco-friendly.

The irony is, they abuse the use of the elevator. What if they're at the 3rd floor and had to go to the 2nd floor? Better take the elevator!

If we were caught using the elevator, they could have our IDs taken and be suspended. Cool kids would brag about riding the elevator and not getting caught. We have reached to that point.

Great way to stain our permanent record even if we paid for the construction of it and the electricity that runs the elevator!
