An eight-year-old girl now lies critically ill in hospital in the Adamawa State capital, Yola, after her father cut into her throat with a kitchen knife.

The father who is believed to be suffering a psychological problem after a long time of drug abuse said upon being asked by neighbours why he turned against his daughter, that he just felt like doing it.

The story broke Wednesday afternoon when one of the people at the Yola town neighbourhood where the incident took place, complained on her Facebook page that they took the girl to the hospital and they were having difficulty in getting a doctor to attend to her.

Our correspondent who was one of the newsmen who mobilised to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yola, however, found that the girl had already been stabilised and admitted at the emergency unit of the hospital.

On interaction with neighbours, our correspondent gathered that the father acquired some wealth from cattle trading and even went for the Muslim pilgrimage last year, but that he started taking drugs at some point, as a result of which his mental balance and business fortunes declined rapidly.

“His wife became really worried when the man began to threaten that he would slaughter members of the family one by one,” one of the neighbours, Maryam Umar, said, adding that the man’s wife, Fadimatu, responded by taking all the kitchen knives away.

She could not say where the man, Seidu Dan Iya, got the knife with which he sliced the throat of his daughter who now lies between life and death.

The doctor who attended to little Zarau Seidu, Elkannah Patrick, said the girl has a 50-50 chance of survival.

The ENT doctor told newsmen that he had cleaned up the site of the cut and would now source the right tool for a more comprehensive surgery, and reiterated that the girl had half a chance to live.

“We cannot determine yet if there is infection. We hope there is none because infection will seriously imperil her chances of survival,” he said.

The Head of Clinical Services of the FMC, Yola, Dr Yerima Suleiman Yusuf, said the hospital would treat little Zarau free of charge.

He said, “We have a Paupers’ Fund from which we will treat this patient because we realize that the mother is not ready and the father is a psychiatric case.”

The man is currently with the police, giving the Adamawa State Police Command the second psychiatric case in less than two weeks following the case in Mubi last week of a man who killed his wife and reported that he thought he was fighting a stranger.

Three years after the first aircraft landed in Kano, Bauchi people also had their own share of the spectacle in 1928.

In preparation for the arrival of the aircraft, an expanse of land was cleared by prisoners to serve as the aerodrome about half a mile from Bauchi.

After their long flight from Egypt, the planes made an impressive landing on the hastily improvised aerodrome before a large crowd of native chiefs, spectators and entertainers.

The first picture shows the arrival of the second plane, which made the best landing.

The second picture shows the Emir of Bauchi Yakubu Usmanu leading other traditional rulers in the province to see one of the aeroplanes immediately after landing.

The third picture shows the young Emir of Misau Ahmadu dan Tafida seated in the cockpit of one of the 'planes.

The fourth picture shows the chief mechanic of the aircraft, while the fifth and sixth pictures show drummers and entertainers at the grand event.

A 34-year old lady, Ayomide Oyewole, has landed in trouble after she burgled a shop at a popular market in Lagos, stole dried snake and was caught.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at the popular Igando Market in Alimosho Local Government area of Lagos.

The Police at Igando Division alleged that the suspect, Ayomide, broke into the shop at night, stole the dried snake and fish belonging to one Mrs. Morenike Taiwo worth over N360,000 including other items.

However, while she was escaping, she was caught by security men, who eventually handed her over to the Police for prosecution. The items she allegedly stole were recovered from her as exhibits for prosecution but later released to the owner on bond.

After interrogation, the Police found her culpable and she was then charged before the Ejigbo Magistrate Court, where she pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Supol Kenneth Asibor, asked the Court to give a date for hearing since she pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that she actually committed the offence.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has arrived in Kaduna to commiserate with the parents of Precious Owolabi, the youth corps members who was killed on Monday, during the face-off between Shiite protesters and the Nigerian police in Abuja.

Owolabi was working for Channels TV until his death.

Osinbajo is accompanied by Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who received him at Kaduna Airforce Base, according to a tweet by Osinbajo’s spokesman, Laolu Akande.

The parents of Owolabi live in the university town of Zaria.

Rebbeca Sharibu, mother of the abducted Dapchi secondary schoolgirl Leah Sharibu, has said that she is still hopeful that her daughter would return alive.

Grace Taku, an aid worker kidnapped in Borno State on July 18, had claimed in a video released by the insurgents on Wednesday that Leah had been killed.

According to Grace, who works with Action Against Hunger, Leah and some other people were killed because of the inability of the Federal Government to save them, Igbere TV reports.

“I am begging on behalf of all of us. I don’t want such to happen to us and it also happened again with Leah and Alice, because Nigeria could not do anything about them, they were not released they were also killed,” the woman said in the video.

Mrs Sharibu, according to report, said though she had not seen the video, she was optimistic that her daughter would return home alive.

“No matter how long it takes, my hope is still alive that my daughter will come back alive from Boko Haram. I still look forward to that day and I am confident that she will return,” she said.

She also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to rescue her daughter, saying she was bothered by the recent silence over her daughter’s case.

“I also want to still appeal to the people that are holding my daughter to please have mercy on her and release her without any condition. She does not know anything. What has she done to deserve what she is going through?” she said.

The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki said his administration will not avail the federal government land for the contentious Ruga settlement in Edo State.

The Governor spoke while giving a lecture on the topic “Challenges of Pastoralism and International Migration for Sustainable Peace and Development: Edo State Experience” at the Department of State Services Institute of Security Studies (Executive Intelligent Management Course 12), in Abuja.

He said the narrative that the pastoral movement and farmer/headers clashes are not related to the security challenges in Nigeria is not true.

His words: “In Edo State, we have found so-called herdsmen with maps in the forests, they clearly cannot be herdsmen who are dependent on their livelihood from their animal assets; that cannot be.

“I think it is important in the context of this discourse to make that distinction between conflict as a result of economic activities, separate from deliberate conflict that is related to other issues like insurgency and terrorism.”

The Governor said over the years the state has had issues of pastoralists or herdsmen who have come to parts of the South, Edo State using grazing routes and mixing with locals.

“Our approach is, animal husbandry is a business just like we have poultry, piggery or what have you, so from that perspective, we want to now upgrade agricultural practices as it relates to livestock.

“During the era of General Babangida, he set up ranches in Edo; we have one in Igarra and several parts of the state. They are either privatized or left fallow, so we are talking to people who purchased them to see how they can be re-activated.

“For us, because it is business like any other private business, the state should not really have much to except we create an enabling environment for those people we want to invest in livestock business.

“So, the issue of giving state land for livestock, it won’t happen in Edo State.

“However, for individuals who have land and they want to go into livestock business like we are supporting people who are doing cassava and others, we as government will support them.”

On how to resolve the incessant herders/farmers conflict, he said: “The Sambisa Grazing Reserve (4800 ha) is an ideal and symbolic place to take-off by establishing a ranch run by the military.

“It would significantly improve the security situation in the zone and encourage cooperation between pastoralists and the military.
“In the North West, the military should also be encouraged to create ranches in the Gidan Jaja Grazing Reserve (565,000 ha) for the same purpose of improving security and cooperation with pastoralists,” the Governor said.

Obaseki said violent extremism, recurrent herder-farmer conflicts, cattle rustling, armed banditry, violent cross-border crimes, insurgency, illegal migration and other forms of crimes have “threaten the fabric of our country. ”

According to him, national cohesion is seriously threatened by the conflict “as many farmers and pastoralists have lost their lives and property in several orgies of violence.

“As we gather here for this lecture, so many Nigerians are living in fear of attack or reprisal attacks due to the growing herders-farmers’ conflict,” he said.

I'm a student in a tertiary institution located in Cross River state, but I base in PH.

Last month when I was about coming home for the first semester break, my school mate gave me a package to deliver to his girlfriend who lives here too.

Fast forward to when we met in PH, she came over to get it and in the process of discussing and casual playing, we ended up hugging and kissing.

It ended on an agreement note that her guy shouldn't hear of it. As a matter of fact, we agreed to say we met at the junction.

I thought it had ended and i took my mind off it, only for my guy to start calling me, threatening fire and brimstone.

What happened?

I called the babe and she told me her conscience was heavy, she had to tell him.
Now all my guys are against me.
The problem is that i don't know how I'm going to face my friends when I resume school.
I now look like a Judas.
What steps can i take to ease the tension?

As part of measures to halt the spate of killings and kidnappings in the southern part of the country, the police authorities have concluded plan to scale up the numerical strength of the force by injecting 40,000 part-time constables into the system.

As a result, the recruitment of the constables will begin in August, according to findings by Saturday PUNCH.

The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba, who confirmed the development, explained that at least 50 persons would be recruited from each of the 774 local government areas in the country, adding that the recruitment exercise might kick off in August.

As part of measures to check rising insecurity in the face of insufficient manpower in Nigeria’s police force, the Force had in May concluded plans to engage thousands of Special Constables to work with conventional policemen in communities.

The police had presented the idea to the state governors who were said to have bought into the scheme.

The men, who will not be armed, are expected to handle charge room and administrative duties, crowd control, accident scene duties, alternative dispute resolution and other less sensitive and less risky functions.

They are expected to dress in police uniform but with a different force number to distinguish them from the regular cops.

It was learnt that respectable members of the society like pastors, imams, teachers, lawyers, journalists and youths would be considered for the volunteer job.

The constables, after receiving training in police colleges, will work on a part-time basis with regular policemen, he said, adding that this would free up more police manpower to deal with serious operation and other security issues.

Mba stated, “Our focus is to pursue a technologically-driven Police Force to reduce the number of policemen on the road.

So, we have decided to introduce the special constabulary system which involves the recruitment of voluntary citizens to work as part-time policemen.

“They would be recruited from their immediate constituency where they would work with the conventional policemen.

The Nigerian Police Force currently have over 300,000 policemen out of which significant number are guarding political officer holders and VIPs.

Meanwhile, Mba told Saturday PUNCH on Friday that the police had prepared a new operational order targeted at addressing the current insecurity situation in the country.

According to him, it involves the deployment of more personnel, as well as helicopters, drones, technical platform and other special equipment in the South-West, South-East and South-South regions.

Already, about 100 patrol vehicles have been acquired and are being customised with various communication gadgets and equipment to enhance the counter-kidnapping operation.

Speaking on the new counter-kidnapping operational order, Mba said, “It involves the deployment of special operatives and operational assets, including special equipment, helicopters and drones in the South-West, South-East and South-South regions to replicate the successes we have achieved in the North-West where kidnappings and killings have been checkmated by the police.”

The spokesman assured that Nigerians would, in the coming weeks, see the difference in the security situation in the South, adding that the security on the highways would also be re-jigged.

He explained further that there would be increased supervision of police operatives deployed for the counter-kidnapping operation, noting that the security system being put in place would be water-tight.

Mba added, “In the next couple of weeks, Nigerians would see the difference in the security system in the South as we ramp up our security system and take the battle to the criminals terrorising innocent citizens.”

Asked about the number of operatives that may be involved in the special operations, Mba declined, saying he would not disclose this for strategic reasons.

To strengthen the new operation, the police spokesman said they would partner with state governments in the region to ensure its success.

He said the arrangement to deploy helicopters and drones in the South-West would take priority as search for kidnappers and killer herdsmen continues.

The police will initially focus on Ondo forests as search for the killers of Mrs Funke Olakunri, the daughter of Afenifere leader, pa Reuben Fasoranti, continues.

Hi guys, my fiancee & i have been together for years now & preparation is on for our wedding later this year, the relationship has been fantastic, but there is this very big 'BUT' about my fiancee, & as a matter of fact she sees it as nothing or no issue at all, but this Same thing is giving me real headache & sleepless nights because i really do love her & i do know for sure that i cannot cope with it.

Yesterday, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos State governor, promised to provide Lagosians with alternatives to road transportation.

He also said that these alternatives would be made to be efficient and safe for Lagosians and those who choose to visit the state.

In a statement at the 4th Lagos Traffic Radio Lecture Series, Sanwo-Olu said the government has identified the need for intermodal transport to resolve gridlock, adding that that was why the blue line was initiated and BRT lanes constructed.

According to report, he was informed of his mother's demise while he was celebrating his graduation and Second Degree from Nims University, India.

Sulaiman Abdullahi, from Adamawa State, fell ill immediately after hearing the news of his mother's demise, he never got better, so he died.
