He may have gotten the loan via the backdoor. I am aware of an instance some years back, where the same Ubah was able to use his paddy-paddy connection in a particular bank to obtain a very huge loan. Politics › Enugu Community Decries Incessant Kidnapping Of Villagers By Herdsmen by AkalaJ(op): 4:24pm On Jun 18, 2021 |
https://thenationonlineng.net/enugu-community-decries-incessant-kidnapping-of-villagers-by-herdsmen/June 18, 2021 By Damian Duruiheoma, Enugu
The people of Agu – Amaede community in Eha-Amufu town, Isi-Uzo council area of Enugu State have cried out over incessant kidnapping of their kinsmen by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
The assailants struck the community last week and kidnapped seven villagers, including a woman and two teenage boys.
They were reported to have killed one of the victims, said to be a commercial motorcyclist and collected some ransom before setting their captives free after three days in captivity.
Speaking with journalists after a two-day emergency meeting by members of the community, the national vice president, Agu- Amaede Development Union, Mr. Ogenyi Donatus, said the community had been seriously troubled by the incessant kidnapping of their kinsmen by Fulani militia masquerading as herdsmen.
Ogenyi said that since January this year, no fewer than eleven people of the community had been kidnapped by the Fulani herdsmen with the people of the community contributing to pay ransom for the freedom of their kinsmen.
He said, “Since the activities of the Fulani herdsmen started here, our people can no longer sleep with their two eyes closed. We have been living in panic.
“We returned home after hearing what happened and resolved to proffer solutions to this incessant kidnapping of our people.
“Our people are in distress. That’s why we’re happy that you journalists came to hear from us. We cannot sleep in our place again. The worst is that we cannot go to our farms anymore. Our people are majorly farmers. It has been a terrible experience for us.
“There’s a way we live here in this community. Majority of our people settle in the farms and return home once in a while and a few others live in the village centers. That farm settlement is where the Fulani people are rearing their farms.
“On a personal note, the only sister that I have, told me that the Fulani herdsmen came to their farms last two weeks and were going from house to house and taking food, water and anything that is good to them. She is a widow and had no capacity to stop them. So what some of our people do is to simply allow them to do whatever they want. But they still go ahead to unleash their cattle on our people’s farms. And no one will complain because the men go about with sophisticated weapons.
“We’re in an area where governments don’t hear the problems of the people.”
He further stated, “Another problem we have is that we don’t have access to network providers in our farms. That’s why anytime the Fulani herdsmen come around, they will operate for hours without restraints and go anytime they want without anyone challenging them.
“Some of our people living in the village centers here can access networks but once you cross to the farmlands, you are cut off from the networks because it’s kilometers away. That’s why it is very easy for the herdsmen to go there and perpetrate any evil unchallenged.
“Few weeks ago, they came to one of the farm settlements at Okpokwu and a man that attempted to challenge them; they chopped off his right hand with cutlass. They equally kidnapped one of the farmers there and released him few days later after our people contributed to pay his ransom.
“The worst of the experience is that while perpetrating the act, they will go to the shops around that place and drink themselves to stupor for hours without anyone challenging them. That’s because there’s no network to call anyone for help
“This latest case where they kidnapped seven persons from here is not the first time they have come here to kidnap our people. In January, they kidnapped the treasurer of our town union, Nick Ugwu and it took the contribution of our people to pay his ransom for him to regain his freedom.
“Why this kidnapping is becoming rampant like this is because of the bad road we have here. That is the Eha Amufu- Ikem-Obollo Afor Road. Since the current dispensation in 1999, no governor has come to our aid. It was the current governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi that started the construction of the road. But we want them to hasten the construction of the road so that we know how to avoid the kidnappers since security operatives have decided not to harken to our calls each time there’s a crisis like this.
“The road is so bad that even if you are with a bicycle, you must stop and push it to pass – Same thing with motorcycle. If you are with a car, you must slow down very well before passing through that place. That is the period the Fulani herdsmen strike and kidnap people because they’re hiding in the bushes.”
On whether the community has reported to the police, Ogenyi recalled that in the recent case, “We called the divisional police officer of Isu-Uzo but his phone rang severally without him answering the calls.
“So far, about eleven people, including youths and a woman have been kidnapped here by the Fulani herdsmen and the most painful part is that the families of the victims cannot afford the ransom placed on their heads. It takes the contribution from the members of the community to pay the ransom and get our people their freedom.” Lalasticlala Mynd44 |
Politics › Re: Why Those Clamouring For Tinubu's Presidency Should Rethink by AkalaJ: 10:17am On Jun 18, 2021*. Modified: 1:04pm On Jun 18, 2021 |
Op, you are entitled to your opinion, just like anyone else. But I have to say that your opinion is not realistic in our political climate. It's not enough to say you want lagbaja and tamedun as your preferred candidate. Anyone that wants to aim for political office must either be willing to do the dirty work of politicking by getting out in the field to do the hardwork of building structures from the grassroots, or have an influential 'baba isale' that would sponsor his candidacy. That's just the way the cookie crumbles, and this isn't only unique to Lagos politics. The likes of El-Rufai and many others in the North rode on the popularity and goodwill of Buhari to become governor. In a democracy, the party decides its flag-bearer which it then presents to the electorate to vote for during elections.
If Fashola, Obi, Obaseki, and the others you prefer as president want to stand a chance of being elected into that office, then they need to show enough ambition to build the necessary structures (instead of waiting for a Tinubu, Buhari, Oshiomhole or any other baba somewhere whom they can ride on his coat-tails to get power). Besides, we know how that usually ends (in betrayal). Tinubu has so many lazy loyalists (unfortunately he can't satisfy all of them) who are waiting for him to help them get political power through his hard-earned structures built over the years, without them putting in the effort. He has done what many of his critics don't have the heart to do - - grooming others into becoming leaders in their own right. Anyone that feels he (Tinubu) is not good enough to vie for the presidency should go ahead and put in the work, get his party's nomination, and e sure his name appears on the ballot box on election day, so that we can appraise his competence though our votes. Only a fool would expect Tinubu to just lay down and die or give up his political ambitions just because you can't stand him. Man is a political animal. If any of your favs have what it takes to challenge Tinubu politically, they should man-up and put themselves forward. Many have tried with varied success. Eg, Fayemi, Amosun, Obanikoro, Fashola, Pedro, Aketi, etc.
The Fashola that you are praising was brought to limelight by the same Tinubu that you are demonizing. Tinubu had to disappoint so many of his loyalists because he could see that Fashola had what it takes to consolidate and build on his own strides. Tinubu's most potent skill is in spotting talents. And that's one of the unique traits of a good leader. He deliberately handpicked the Fashola because he saw what many could not see at the time, and he must be given credit for that. Ditto Ambode.
Also, only an enemy of progress would not expect Tinubu's successors to outperform him in office. Successors are meant to do better than their predecessors, not worse. So abeg dead all that talk about Fashola doing better than Tinubu because under normal circumstances that should be expected, else Fashola would be considered a failure if he cannot outperform his predecessor. It is obvious you are not a fan of Tinubu (which is fine) and that your dislike for the man has made it impossible for you to see anything good about his relative successes both in and out of office; in politics, those that hate you will deliberately blind themselves to your strides while in office, so your positions aren't unusual. |

Maybe it is because Onitsha has very limited land space and private capital inflow to accommodate such high level of development. Private capital doesn't work based on sentiments. Investors only put their money in places where they're guaranteed of high returns, with a big enough and cosmopolitan consumer market with an accompanying high purchasing power. For a long time, Onitsha has not managed to grow beyond being a regional trading centre, suggesting that the city isn't dynamic enough to attract the level of big projects that the Op is suggesting. |

My fear for an Prof. Osinbajo presidency is that he will be a pushover like Goodluck Jonathan for the Northern hawks as well as rowdy Southern secessionists, activists, and other rabble-rousers. With Boko Haram, bandits, kidnappers, UGM and the likes threatening the security of Nigerians, it might be too risky to have a soft president that would hesitate to step on toes and make hard decisions. As much as I like Osinbajo, I don't see him having the guts to take hard decisions when the chips are down. As for the Al-Mustapha pairing, I doubt that even Osinbajo himself would entertain such an insult. |

Don't raise an argument to a bar that is "oversyllabus". Replace those Americans I listed with the wealthiest Nigerians and my point still stands. You will find that the overwhelming majority of the top 20 wealthiest Nigerians are entrepreneurs, not employees in the conventional sense. Only a relatively few have succeeded in building sustainable wealth as employees. |

Gerrard59: That's not true for the vast majority of wealthy people across the world.
https://twitter.com/NaijaFlyingDr/status/1253930736215785472?s=19[/quote]Dr. Ola is talking about how most people become millionaire 'rich'. I'm talking wealthy people in the mold of Bill Gates, Jeff bezos, Jack ma, Mark Zuckerberg, Warren buffet, etc. None of them became wealthy by working a 9 to 5, or via climbing the corporate ladder. Their kind of wealth cannot be achieved by being an employee. That's the kind of wealth I am talking about (the kind that gets you on the Forbes list), and it certainly isn't for the vast majority. I also think that most people don't even want that kind of wealth anyway, because they lack that level of ambition and are contented with just getting by and meeting their basic needs. |

Joysticks: Can a Nigerian hard-worker get rich from a 9 to 5 monthly salary without involving in runs? I don't mean politics where the politicians allawees are higher than their salary. I mean genuine salary earners who don't engage in illegal activities to make extra income at their workplaces? Unfortunately, no it cannot. The fastest path to wealth is entrepreneurship. But then again entrepreneurship is not for everybody, except those with the hunger, risk tolerance, grit, and focus to brave it. That's why only a few become really wealthy in life because most just don't have what it takes to build wealth like the few successful entrepreneurs. It is what it is. |

If you could hustle to gather together that much money in Nigeria, why not hustle even more to keep multiplying it in the same Nigeria? Every other country will present its own set of challenges in terms of starting from scratch, fitting into a new society, getting your 'papers/stay', etc. Just saying. |

Buhari just expressed the real reason the FG is not taking ipob secessionists seriously; they lack critical support from the SS, without which a Biafra comprising just the 5 SE states would be no different from a Lesotho encircled by South Africa. Until and unless SS people embrace ipob like most igbos do, ipob are just wasting their time and the lives of igbo youths. That's just the truth. As it stands, the 6 SW Yoruba states stand a far more realistic chance of seceding from Nigeria than the 5 SE igbo states, for obvious reasons. |
