Chief Chris Ubah popularly known as Eselu has summoned a meeting of all his supporters and political structures in PDP. The meeting Akelicious gathered that the meeting will hold today at his Uga country home. A source told Akelicious that Eselu summoned the meeting of his key supporters to instruct them on their next political action and who to work for in the coming November 18, election. Our investigation reveals that Eselu who is an ally of Victor Umeh and Obiano may direct his political camp to work for APGA and Obiano or outrightly decamp to APGA. The meeting at Uga today, will be a blow to PDP that has seen many party faithful like Ifeanyi Ubah, Obiogbolu, Stella Oduah, John Emeka among others express dissatisfaction with the party openly. The PDP internal crisis if not checked will work in Obiano's and Nwoye's favour should APC put its own house in order. Contrary to insinuations that Senator Ali Modu Sheriff’s recent visit to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was to pave way for his eventual defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), erstwhile spokesperson of Sheriff group, Bernard Mikko, insists they are still members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Mikko also denied any meeting with APC national chairman, John Oyegun, stressing that Sheriff’s visit to Osinbajo “was purely on national state matters and had nothing to do with politics.” Meanwhile, the APC chairman, Odigie-Oyegun has also distanced himself from Sheriff’s visit to Aso Rock. Some reports had claimed that both Odigie-Oyegun and Sheriff met with Osinbajo, in connection with Sheriff’s purported moves to rejoin the APC. Given its very poor human rights record, the latest being the widespread abuse of civilians in the South East, stakeholders have taken umbrage at the military action planned for other parts of the country. While the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) is warning of “frightening potentials” the launch in a “very fragile area” portends, Yoruba groups are alleging that the Gen. Muhammadu Buhari-led administration is planning to use the operation to stop the agitation for restructuring. Specifically, the Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) is wondering why Buhari is rolling out military tanks now that the call for the restructuring of the country is deafening, adding that his body language suggests he is opposed to the clamour. The Nigerian Army, yesterday, told The Guardian that it would soon launch a military operation code named “Operation Crocodile Smile II in the South West and South South regions. According to Director of Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Sani Usman, the operations are aimed at enhancing troops proficiency and professionalism, as well as, build a synergy between the service and other security agencies.Usman added that the operations would take cognizance of the security challenges in the formations’ areas of responsibilities, and try to nip in the bud, all forms of criminalities within the areas. He said the objectives of the planned operations are “to enhance troops proficiency and professionalism, as well as, create synergy of efforts among the services and security agencies.” In making known PANDEF’s position, its secretary general Ledum Mitee, said that the Operation Python Dance, which was launched in the South-East has been tainted with reported cases of gross human rights abuses, should serve as a warning to the army that its planned extension to South South, in whatever guise, is not required in a democracy and it is condemnable. “We cannot abandon whatever democratic space we have been able to get off the military since civilian rule returned. Now it appears the military has taken the centre stage apparently blackmailing the police, so that at whatever time there is a security threat it is the military that would be deployed. “I think that the planned operation is uncalled for and should not be supported by any democratically minded person, especially as it has been made clear that all these operations infringe on human rights. Now the peace in the Niger Delta is a very fragile one that needs to be concretised and made sustainable. To now bring a military operation to this very fragile area is something that has frightening potentials,” he said. Mitee said the police should be allowed to tackle issues like kidnapping, cultism and other related crimes, instead of being blackmailed out of their primary duties.He argued that Nigeria was not under a military regime to warrant incessant, indiscreet deployment of the military. “It is like asking a dog to go after a rat, instead of a pussycat. We should not just sit down and close our eyes, and use that as a justification for a military operation. The situation in the Niger Delta does not warrant any military operation,” he added. For former Ijaw National Congress president, Professor Kimse Okoko, the planned military operation portends the morbid desire of a section of this country to continue to dominate the other parts.While wondering why the Federal Government has not launched any military operation against marauding herdsmen that have being killing, raping and maiming people, Okoko said: “This is a way of showing naked power, hoping that they will intimidate the people of the South South zone and then silent them. I don’t think it is the right thing to do. We need to put in place policies that would bring this country together and not activities or actions that will further divide the country and push it to its precipice. Doing that is of no good to anybody. “This country is going down, the government has been a failure. They should sit down and look at issues bedevilling the country and take appropriate actions and not to be chasing shadows all over the place,” he said.Various Yoruba groups are of the view that the planned military action is a ploy to “silence and intimidate their leaders, who are clamouring for the restructuring of the country.” They also warned Buhari to be wary of those they described as “fifth columnists” in his government that may want to use the military operation to subvert civil rule in the country.They insisted that the South West has been more peaceful than the North West and North Central and dismissed the arguments that the Operation Crocodile Smile 11 is meant to curb the security threats from Badoo and other cultist groups in the South West. General Secretary of YCE, Dr. Kunle Olatunji said there is no need to roll out any military operation in the region because “the police has not told us they are incapable of maintaining peace in the South West.“There may be some minor skirmishes, but South West is relatively peaceful. We do not need any military operation here now because it sends a wrong signal that civilians cannot handle governance. Besides, why are they rolling out military operation now when we are clamouring for restructuring and the body language of the President appears to oppose that agitation? “There is no breakdown of law and order in any part of South West to warrant military operation except to intimidate. We have been under military government for over three decades and we have passed through that era. There is no security risk here for the military to come to our streets for any show of force.” For the National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin: “This Operation Crocodile Smile 11 has a sinister motive because we all know that this crocodile is not coming to smile at all. We do not see it as a tea party, but something meant to instill fear in people and intimidate those clamouring for restructuring. It is meant to suppress people. “The reason given by the military does not make sense because the police and OPC had fought Badoo to a standstill in Lagos, and Ikorodu and other parts of South West have been in peace. When Evans the kidnapper was arrested, his neighbours in Magodo read it in newspapers like other Nigerians, they were not intimidated by the police, they did not carry tanks anywhere, they worked on intelligence and got him. “If there is anywhere we need military operation it, is in the North West because Fulani herdsmen had been categorised as the fourth most dangerous terror group in the Global Terror Index, yet there is no crocodile smiling at them or python dancing with them. “We strongly believe that there are fifth columnists, who are working in this administration. The President must be wary of them, and no military operations should come to the South West. President Buhari should know that this is how the fifth columnists went to Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s house in 1984 without his knowledge. If you continue to cage the South West, South South and South East with military operations what are they saying? The National Coordinator of Yoruba Patriot Movement (YPM), Oladosu Oladapo, said if the intention of the Federal Government is to intimidate leaders of the region and silence the agitation for restructuring, the motive has failed. He added: “There is peace here and we do not see any other reason for military operations than to intimidate our people to stop their agitation for restructuring and that is not possible.On his part, founder of Odua Peoples Congress (OPC), Dr Frederick Fasheun, has advised the Federal Government to allow the soldiers to stay in their barracks in order not to cause unnecessary crisis in the country. He said the police has been doing well in curbing crisis in the South West, so the police should be better equipped, rather than bring soldiers to usurp their functions.Human Rights activist, Dr. Femi Aborisade insists plans to stage a military operation in the South West, “was not only alien to the Nigerian Constitution, but also poses serious threat to the nation’s democracy. We resist military operation for Nigeria as a whole. It has not been established that there is breakdown of law and order; it has not been established that the police, which primary duty it is to maintain law and order is incapable. It has not also been established that Mr. President has approached the National Assembly to seek approval to draft the military. I therefore do not see the need to invite the military. The whole plan appears to be an attempt to bring Nigeria under military dictatorship. Even where Mr. President is compelled to draft the military, he ought to have approached the National Assembly.” The human rights lawyer said it is up to the police to protect democracy and not the military because it has no constitutional role in that regard.National Secretary, Nigerian National Summit Group (NNSG), Tony Uranta, in decrying military involvement in democratic issues said, “while the constitutional role of the military is to secure Nigerian borders and national integrity is understood, we are still bemused that it is being deployed as an alternative to the police in maintaining law and order. He alleged that the planned military operation was basically an attempt to divide the strong forces in the South South and South West, particularly the PANDEF, and that of Afenifere.Uranta warned that what Buhari is doing or planning for the South South and South West could trigger crisis. “It is therefore necessary for all stakeholders to urge the government to shelve the idea because of the danger it portends for the country. The Coalition of Nigerian Apostolic Leaders (CNAL) has urged non-violent approach in addressing the grievances and agitations in the country. The Convener of the coalition, Apostle Wale Adefarasin, made the call yesterday at a press briefing in Lagos. He appealed to separatist groups, militia organisations and the advocates of restructuring to be cautious about their utterances. The cleric also urged the Federal Government to eschew any violent reaction in resolving the current agitations across the country. He warned that violent communication would plunge the country into deeper crisis rather than achieving a peaceful end. According to him: “It is imperative for the Federal Government not to resort to violent reaction in suppressing or correcting any violent communication approach that may have been adopted by any group, in the interest of peace and unity of the country.” Adefarasin, who is the General Overseer of Garden Light Assembly, acknowledged that it is not possible to stop any group from airing their grievances in a democratic government. An Igbo group under the aegis of Igbo peace Movement and the Arewa group in Anambra State have declared their stand for a united Nigeria. The two groups made their stand known in a press briefing in Awka tagged "Awka declaration 2017. Leaders of Hausa community, members of the Peace Corps Nigeria and leaders of students union in Anambra State, were among those that make up the groups. Briefing newsmen, the chairman of Ndi Igbo Peace Movement, Ambassador Divine Onyekachi, said the peace and unity of the country are critical ingredients for the survival of the nation. Ambassador Onyekachi maintained that Nigeria as a country has collectively worked very hard to make her great, noted that Igbos are peace loving people. While stressing that the strength of the country is in its unity in diversity, the leader of the Igbo Youth Movement called for a concerted efforts to enable Nigeria reclaim her rightful place in the comity of nations. Oh his part, the leader of the Arewa youths in Anambra State, Alhaji Musa Shelley said that Northern Governors are currently visiting all the South Eastern states preaching the message of peace while they plan to visit other states to buttress its importance. On his part, the National President Anambra Students Union, Comrade Chibunna Echegu, advised all Anambra students in the country to sue for peace. The representative of Nigeria Peace Corps, added that as peace ambassadors, they would align with groups preaching peace since dialogue is the only means of settling dispute. Over 500 members of the MoFugas, a strong political structure in Anambra State formerly with the governorship candidate of the Peoples Progressive Alliance (PPA), Mr. Godwin Ezeemo, has collapsed its structure to the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Oseloka H. Obaze, ahead of the election on November 18th.Speaking during the event, leader of the group,Mr. Shedrack Anakwue, said their decision to join Mr. Obaze’s campaign was influenced by their desire to support the best and most qualified candidate and a party that is widely tipped to win the election. He said the number that attended the event was only a select few as many more were out in the field. In his remarks, Mr. Obaze, a former United Nations official and the immediate past SSG of Anambra thanked the visibly excited group for its timely support reminding them that the party now has the best opportunity to win Anambra State. The Public Policy expert restated his commitment to keying Anambra State into the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations by reviving the Anambra Integrated Development Strategy (ANIDS) used by the Peter Obi administration to achieve the MDGs but abandoned by the current government. In his words “the problem of most government in Nigeria including the current government in Anambra State is that government policies are transaction-driven not public-interest driven, governance is about adding value and service delivery”.He further stressed that no community will be left behind in his administration insisting that he will conduct local government elections in the State in the first six months in office if elected. Our attention has been drawn to claims by two national newspapers (ThisDay and The Sun) last week (Thursday 14 September), that Enugu State government is owing salaries and arrears of salaries to its workers. This claim was based on a News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) survey which listed Enugu as one of the states in Nigeria yet to utilize their share of the second tranche of the Paris/London Clubs refunds. The newspapers appear to have concluded that since the state is yet to utilize its second tranche and since the federal government had asked that a lion share of the refund be used to offset salary and pension arrears, Enugu State must therefore be owing salary and pension arrears. We regret this unfortunate conclusion which could have been avoided with a little fact-checking. For the avoidance of doubt, no civil servant in Enugu State is being owed a kobo as salaries or arrears of salaries since the assumption of office of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. Enugu State public workers’ salaries used to be paid promptly on the 25thday of each month. However, beginning from three months ago, Gov. Ugwuanyi ordered the accountant general to move forward the payday for civil servants and they are now being paid on the 23rd of the month. By this executive stroke, Enugu State has become the first state in Nigeria to pay its workers,with effect from three months ago. It must be pointed out that Enugu State sits fifth from the bottom of the table on share of monthly federal allocations. However, through prudent management of its resources and an aggressive IGR drive, the Gov. Ugwuanyi administration has been able to fully discharge its obligations to workers and still embark on massive projects to promote its agenda of employment generation, development of the rural areas, provision and maintenance of social services, and management of security and peace. Enugu has yet to utilize its share of the second tranche of the refunds because the State does not have a pressing need to immediately utilize the funds, since it is not indebted in any way to her workers and pensioners. What the state does each time it receives her share of the refunds is to immediately call for a meeting of the stakeholders – the two labour unions (NLC & TUC), representatives of pensioners, leaders of traditional institutions and community based associations, and development experts – to decide how best utilize the refund. It is also at this meeting that a sharing formula is established between the states and local councils.The portion reserved for salary and pensions payments is kept aside and used to pay workers and pensioners as and when due. Considering that many states are not in a hurry to share the refunds with their local councils, we think that Governor Ugwuanyi should be commended rather than visited with unverified and false stories. Goddy Uwazurike, the former President of Igbo Think-Tank group, Aka Ikenga, has said that the reason behind the recent military invasion of Abia state in the guise of Operation Python Dance is to destabilize the state and cause the declaration of a state of emergency. He made this known on Thursday when he appeared as a guest on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme. He said: “Despite a meeting between the two parties over the issue, the army had already made up its mind to stay, the governor’s announcement cannot alter the army’s decision. “There is no miscommunication (between the military authorities and the state governor). Operation Python Dance or Egwu Eke as they want to put it is a very clever ploy by some people to destabilise Abia state, for just one purpose – to declare a State of Emergency. “Remove the governor for a time, put a military man there and before they know it, the military man as governor will simply go and crush the young people. So there is no miscommunication. “The governor maybe misfiling what is going on, they had an agreement but those people who brought those soldiers know what they are doing.” “I am only speculating; how can I have a proof? Am I part of the military? I’m not heating up the issues. The governor made the broadcast because he believed they had an agreement. They had something they discussed and they would stick to it.” Uwazurike’s comment comes barely 24 hours after Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia state announced the gradual withdrawal of soldiers on the streets of Abia, following calls by eminent Nigerians that the troops be recalled back to the barracks. The Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership, CACOL, a community-based and civil society organisation has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently rejig his cabinet. The organization specifically urged the president to sack the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola for making more noise than he worked since he came on board. It also recommended the immediate removal of the minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, her petroleum counterpart, Ibe Kachikwu and the AGF Abubakar Malami. CACOL in a statement issued by its Executive Chairman, Debo Adeniran noted that it was glaring that “after about two and a half years since the inauguration of this government, certain patterns have unfolded that have exposed mediocrity and incompetence within the ranks of the cabinet members with regards to their performances in lines of the duties assigned to them.” He said, “The Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing: The Ministry superintended over by Mr. Raji Fashola, (SAN), have over the past years made more noise than any practical achievement on the ground to justify the funds that has been ploughed into the three sectors under it. All the actions and policies of the Ministry have compounded the sufferings of Nigerians in multi-folds; from lack of power supply to the illogical hike in electricity tariffs, from continually decaying infrastructure to death traps as roads with a Housing sector that is ‘non-existent’ or in absolute comatose. “The Minister is constantly at loggerheads with institutions, contractors and even the citizenry he is supposed to serve. The Minister keeps standing logic on its heads by asking the already impoverished Nigerians to bear the brunt of his failure by asking them to pay for services not rendered even up to the effrontery of hiking the tariff of electricity against a background of a country in perpetual darkness. He made history by achieving the lowest, ZERO, mega watts for more than 18 hours in history of power generation in Nigeria last year; with nothing to offer than damage, we call on Mr. President to ask him to honourably resign or he should be sacked! “We recommend the immediate replacement of Mr. Malami Abubakar as the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice of this country to save this government and the country from further embarrassment and criticisms within the comity of nations. The mantra of this government and one of the campaign cardinal points of its party is ‘fight against corruption’. For any government to succeed in its policies, programmes and agenda, the commitment, professionalism, soundness and integrity of the Chief Law Officer of that government must be impeccable and consistent. We are afraid, based on recent happenings, the current Attorney-General and Minister of Justice has fallen short of these critical requirements and incapable of delivering any fundamental departure from the corruption ridden past of governance in the country. “We noted the AGF’s unnecessary interventions particularly in cases high profile publicly exposed persons and the needless ‘rivalry’ with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, an agency under his Ministry and which ordinarily reports to him officially. The Attorney-General was publicly accused of meeting, negotiating, agreeing terms and collecting N50 billion on behalf of the government without recourse to both the regulatory agency and supervisory ministry last year. Local and international criticisms greeted the unprofessional conduct of the Minister and secrecy associated with his negotiation with MTN. These reasons, amongst others necessitate our call for the removal of the AGF and Minister of Justice. “The Minister in charge of the Federal Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun has been everything but impressive and constantly appears to be confused on policies and in-depth economic management. The economic terrain under her watch is riddled by contradictions, policy somersaults and uncertainties. It is our conviction that it is the concerted efforts of the Central Bank and other MDAs trying to diversify, particularly the Agriculture Ministry and with the increase in the price of oil that helped pulled Nigeria out of recession recently and not via the acumen of the Finance Minister. We recommended that she should be replaced with better competence and prowess. “The Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources under the superintending Minister of State, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu has no concrete achievement to showcase 2 years after the inauguration of this government. Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Zaki Ahmed says thirty-two suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra have been arrested. CP Zaki said the thirty-two were among those who allegedly caused mayhem at Oyigbo Local Government Area of the state. Major stakeholders of the All Progressive Congress (APC), in Taraba State, has disowned the Minister of Women Affairs, Hajia Aisha Alhassan, over remarks about her loyalty to a former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. The Taraba APC Integrity Group, at a press briefing in Jalingo, in reaction to recent public endorsement of former vice president Atiku Abubakar for the 2019 presidency and declaration that her loyalty was not with President Muhammadu Buhari, said the minister was on her own. The press statement, read by the spokesman of the group, Mr. Aaron Artimas, described her utterances as “irritating and thoroughly scandalous,” and said her behaviour was “insolent as it not only ridiculed the presidency but has become an anti thesis for our dear state”. Artimas said that Alhassan was a Nigerian who entitled to her opinion and has the right to support whoever she chooses to “but her current disposition as Minister of the federal republic representing Taraba State precludes her from expressing or canvassing such a position without slightest consultation with her constituents in the state she parades herself as the party leader”. He said that the major stakeholders of the party in the state have been speaking against Alhassan’s stranglehold on the party, using her influence to intimidate and exert undue pressure on the hapless executive of the party in the state. The statement said that the timing was wrong, and the action disrespectful and demonstration of total lack of sympathy for the President who has just returned from medical treatment. Niger State Governor, Sani Bello, has increased the salary of health workers in the state to meet the Federal Government standards. Niger State Commissioner of health, Dr Mustapha Jibril, who made this revelation while speaking to journalists in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, added that the state has also engaged over 400 workers in the health sector. Dr Jibril, disclosed that two years into Bello’s administration in the state, the government has increased its service delivery to the people. In his words; “In health, the administration is revitalizing the Primary health Care System through Niger Health 1.0. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called for the immediate resignation of the Minister of Women Affairs, Aisha Jumai Alhassan over what it tagged her ‘derogatory remarks’ against President Muhammadu Buhari. Alhassan, famously known as Mama Taraba, has been under fire following her recent comment that she would support former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar even if President Buhari opted to contest in 2019. She had said, “And again, Baba Buhari did not tell us that he is going to run in 2019. “Let me tell you today that if Baba said he is going to contest in 2019, I swear to Allah, I will go before him and kneel and tell him that ‘Baba I am grateful for the opportunity you gave me to serve your government as a minister but Baba just like you know I will support only Atiku because he is my godfather. Militant groups from the Niger Delta under the auspices of Coalition of Niger Delta Agitators on Friday demanded the immediate removal of the Group Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Maikanti Baru and renounced the earlier stand not to recognize or work with the Pan Niger Delta Forum. The group which issued a quit notice to Nigerians from the North and South Western part of the country to leave the region, however, said it was formally withdrawing the quit notice and the suspension of the planned attacks on the oil installations in the region. In a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja after their meeting, the group said it has also decided to put on hold its earlier plan to declare the republic of Niger Delta on October 1. The statement signed by General John Duke and other leaders of the group said the decision to withdraw the quit notice and other threats was arrived at following the intervention of PANDEF and Nigeria Ethnic Nationality Youth Leaders Forum (NENYLF) led by its Acting National Chairman, Comrade Imoh Okoko. There is pandemonium among recently recruited health workers in Kogi State as their appointments have now been reversed by the State Government. Akelicious gathered that the State Specialist Hospital suffered the major hit as 25 nurses who receive appointment letters from the State Government had theirs reversed. An investigation conducted by Akelicious revealed that the nurses were stopped from resuming work by the management of the health institution. The new recruits were scheduled to resume work this week but left confused when they were turned back. At the moment, their employment status is unknown. A source who craved anonymity told Akelicious that the management took the decision due to lack of funds. ” I can tell you authoritatively that appointment letter were given to those nurses to resume work but unfortunately, they were turned back by the Hospital Management due to the financial crunch faced by the state. “Those doctors that resumed in Specialist Hospital are about 20 but there is doubt in the status of their payment because, what happened with the payment of doctors salaries last months is indeed drawing them back and they are thinking of resigning. ” They are not sure of their salaries, because half salaries were paid to old doctors, so they are not sure of what will happened to them. Do you know what, nemesis is the one catching up with them because they where earlier warned by their other colleagues not to accept any employment from the Kogi State Government. ” When doctors were on strike, Government wanted to recruit new doctors so that they could have reasons to justify their actions. But unfortunately for them, doctors called off their strike action but it was too late to reverse the recruitment process back then,” the source noted. Another source told Akelicious that, the appointment of about 85 health workers including doctors and nurses newly recruited by the State Government, at the Hospital Management Board (HMB) was also reversed. Also, it was learnt that about 20 doctors within the Hospital Management Board (HMB) have been converted to ‘locals’ ( doctors placed on Contract). A doctor who claimed he was newly recruited by the State Government said, ” I resign my appointment as a doctor in Nasarawa State just to get this medical job in Kogi. Now, i am supposed to resume on the 1st of September, 2017 but I was told to hold on. I have rented an apartment here in Lokoja, relocated my family down to this place, but felt disappointed with this news. Where do I go from here? When contacted, the Kogi state commissioner for Health, Dr Saka Audu said the information was not true. “We didn’t reverse the appointment of any health workers newly recruited by Kogi State Government. It was only a change of resumption date and they will soon be communicated.” It would be recalled that about four months ago, Kogi State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Saka Audu, told newsmen that over N2.14bn had been set aside for the recruitment of medical personnel to shore up the shortage of manpower in the health institutions across the state. From his earlier statement, the state government made known its intention to employ 180 Medical Officers, 52 Consultants, 199 Pharmacists, 400 Nurses, 100 Laboratory Technicians and 49 Radiographers. Recall that the Nigeria Medical Association in June 2017 warned Doctors to beware of any employment coming from the Kogi State government at this critical period of salary irregularities. NMA during this period fumed at the alleged attempt by the State Government to recruit new doctors in a bid to replace striking doctors who had not been paid for months. “Information reaching NMA indicate that the Kogi State government through the ministry of health has concluded plans to recruit new set of medical officers to replace the doctors on strike from Monday 19th and Tuesday 20th June 2017. “That appointment letter will be issued immediately and posted to various hospitals across the state. In other to facilitate trade at the ports and promote the ease of doing business, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has directed that any consignment duly released at the terminals should no longer be subjected to Customs cross examination at the exit gate. This was contained in a circular issued by the Officer in Charge, Customs Intelligence Unit, Tin Can Island command, Suleiman Bomoi. The Public Relations Officer Tin Can Island command of the service, Uche Ejesieme, said the unit decided to halt the cross examination to facilitate trade at the ports and promote the ease of doing business in line with the vision of the Federal Government. He said, “In line with our efforts to align with the presidential directive on ease of doing business, the OC of the CIU, Bomoi directed that all cargoes duly released from the terminals should no longer be subjected to cross examination at the point of exit. “This is to ensure that all areas of bureaucracy and cumbersomeness are removed. As Customs officials, we have the responsibility to ensure that we don’t just key into the mandate on ease of doing business but are seen to be driving it.” Ejesieme added that the Customs Area Controller, Tin Can Island command, Bashar Yusuf, was strongly in support of the directive. The Federal Government has said that continuation of work on the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway will depend on budget virement proposal pending before the National Assembly. It said the N10 billion budget currently allocated to the project could not sustain work on the road. Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), stated this in an interview with journalists during an inspection tour of road projects in Lagos at the weekend. He stressed that although the contract is still subsisting, the Federal Government was indebted to the contractors to the tune of N15 billion before the release of the 2017 budget of N10 billion, which is insufficient. According to him, there was a virement proposal before the National Assembly for appropriation of funds for the project. The minister, who stated that the contractors were still being owed on the project but that the National Assembly was expected to solve the problem soon, said: “We have about N15 billion in unpaid certificates,” he said. On the poor state of roads across the country, Fashola, who noted that raining season or winter period had always been a difficult time in road maintenance worldwide, said there were plans to step up road network maintenance between September and May next year. He also appealed to the media to intensify civic enlightenment against stealing of manhole covers and vandalisation of public infrastructure in the country because of its negative effect on tax-payers. Besides, the minister said his ministry was working to make all roads in Apapa and its environs motorable, saying that the reconstruction of the road being handled by the Reynolds Construction Company (RCC) was part of the Federal Government regeneration plan to improve efficiency in the port. He appealed to the RCC Project Manager, Mr. Vaknin Harel, to speed up construction work along Funsho Williams Road to Ijora Bridge. Harel, who promised to meet the deadline, said the construction firm was filling the road with more durable materials to asphalt stage to make the road last longer. In another development, the Akwa Ibom Government has restated that the Federal Government owed it N140 billion spent on repair of federal roads in the state. The state’s Commissioner for Works, Mr. Ephraim Inyang, who said this in an interview with The Guardian in Uyo, stated that the state government had done so much in opening the state for investors and the people of the state and if the Federal Government could pay what it owed the state, much more would be achieved. He said: “The total debt the Federal Government owed the state on roads refund was N140 billion out of which N68 billion had been confirmed ready for payment but had not been paid. That makes us guardians of those democratic institutions and traditions — like rule of law, separation of powers, equal protection and civil liberties — that our forebears fought and bled for. Regardless of the push and pull of daily politics, it’s up to us to leave those instruments of our democracy at least as strong as we found them. And finally, take time, in the rush of events and responsibilities, for friends and family. They’ll get you through the inevitable rough patches.
