A recession is perhaps rather simply a reduction in economic activities, particularly in trade and industry, it is generally accompanied by rising inflation. In my view, a focus on inflation is an ideal way to explain a recession to Nigerians. Inflation means rising prices due to a reduction in a currency’s purchasing power. Basically, as prices rise people spend more on less, this creates a knock down effect which reduces economic activity. For example, the average University student who used to visit the barber two times a month, due to having to spend more on food now visits every two months. The barber’s income is reduced so he too cuts down on his spending. The reason I’m emphasising inflation is due to an in my opinion very dangerous idea that is slowly taking root. Seriously, looking at where we find ourselves despite our “potentialities” (as our Senators keep saying), despite our culture being very respectful of elders, I think its fair to say if an economic idea comes from somebody born before the war, ignore them with extreme prejudice. This “Buy Naija to Grow the Naira” nonsense our rulers are pushing, its very dangerous. As I explained, a key factor in a thriving economy is boosting the spending power of your citizenry. The “advanced economies” achieve this by a system of credit and cheap goods. We don’t have a credit system and somehow the idea is growing that switching to more expensive (albeit patriotic) goods will work. Aside from the fact that there is a limit to “buy Naija”, I for example need to buy more games and a new laptop. A concerted switch to local goods will just make inflation worse. It will still be a case of demand outstripping supply and considering Nigeria’s productivity problems, I shudder at the thought. There really is only way to beat a recession and that is increasing economic activity. The government’s plan is sound, borrow, invest the funds in infrastructure. I would suggest a slight reduction in taxes and a massive reduction in the salaries of our politicians, they already live on our kobo, they don’t need extra millions. Also an underrated possible cause of the inflation in my view is the disparity in income among classes (economic) in Nigeria. Take for example, recently the government announced tax holidays for mining investment, suddenly our most patriotic richest man decided that coal mining is attractive. There is a massive squeeze on average Nigerians. They’re being asked to pay more taxes, their shops are being demolished e.t.c. In my view, a slight increase in luxury, property and upper income taxes is ideal. Use the funds to subsidise transport or education. Leave more cash in the hands of Nigerians likely to spend it as opposed to those likely to park it in offshore holdings or property. Or you know the damn oil prices could hit $100+ again. Seriously, what are our pastors ,here for  Not asking them to raise the dead here, merely oil prices. |

One hour of October 27th, 1962 was without a doubt the most important single hour in human history not for what happened, but for what was avoided. It was the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis and tensions between the US and the Soviets were at an all time high. Four Soviet submarines had recently departed from Russia and were traveling through the Caribbean on their way to communist Cuba. Due to President Kennedy’s recent blockade on Cuba, American planes and battleships were on the lookout for Soviet vessels in the area. They spotted the Soviet submarine and forced it to make an emergency dive. The Americans planned to outlast the Soviets as they were trapped underwater with limited supplies in a submarine whose battery would need to be recharged soon. What the Americans were unaware of, however, was that the submarine also carried a nuclear torpedo with about the same power as the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Eventually, the Americans began to drop grenade-sized depth charges around the submarine. The Soviets inside, running low on water and suffering in the sweltering heat, believed they were under attack. They had not communicated with Moscow in several days and were under immense stress. Captain Valentin Savitsky was convinced that nuclear war had already broken out, and gave the order to launch the torpedo in order to salvage some pride for the Soviet Union. It could have been aimed at any of the 11 US Navy ships within range. But, as you can probably guess, it was never launched. In the most important hour of human history, Commander Vasili Arkhipov refused to approve the strike. As one of the three senior officers aboard the sub, his vote was necessary to launch the torpedo. However, he was able to keep his cool even as the men around him called for war, and every one of us who is alive right now owes our life to that decision. Had Savitsky’s order to launch the torpedo been followed, the US would have likely responded in turn and a global thermonuclear war would have resulted. Arkhipov’s heroic decision, made in one hour (or, likely, less than one hour) saved the entire planet from a nuclear apocalypse. 1 Share

This is known as the Love and Respect Principle. #6 - If you have children, and do not keep the marriage priority, after the children leave, there will be no marriage. #7 - The best gift you can give your children is a happy, thriving marriage. #8 - Do not live outside of your means. Allowing finances to be an issue of conflict is really hard on a marriage. Determine together what the budget will be and stick to it. If you are the finance person - you pay the bills. If your wife is - let her. Think about it as team work, rather than your desires and her desires. Sometimes the adventure of living on a budget is fun and challenging. #9 - Treat your wife as a precious gift - you will never regret it!  #10 - If divorce is not an option, than your marriage will be much much sweeter. If you give the impression that you have an out through divorce, there will always be stress and less honesty and less willingness to work it out. |
