Bluecollarguy: LEAVE YOUR N10m IN YOUR SAVINGS ACCOUNT OR INVEST IT IN TREASURY BILL
CASE STUDY:
My people, I know this case has been analyzed severally by the gurus in the house, but I post this to remind those who already know and also to encourage the ones willing to learn what treasury bill, in essence, is really all about as well as how it differs from the money sitting in your savings account. Below is a practical example.
N10m IN YOUR SAVINGS ACCOUNT: I have N10m(principle) to invest. If I leave the money in my GTB savings account(which I used to do), GTB would apply 0.3% to my N10m to determine my monthly gain,ROI, interest earned or interest capitalised. So, 0.3% of N10m = N30K monthly....N30K x 12 months = N360K yearly. As long as your principle and interest rate from GTB remain constant for the year, you'll receive N360K from GTB on top of your N10m. Therefore, your income statement on Jan. 1 will show that you're worth N10,360,000
N10m IN TREASURY BILL: We all remember the formula for simple interest, right? Simple interest(I) = Principle(p)xRate(R)xTime(T) OR I= P × R/100 ×T/364 Tenure options: 91 days, 182 days and 364 days. Assumed Rate and principle are 14% and N10m, respectively.
91 DAYS: I= N10m × 14/100 ×91/364, your automatic interest(ROI) = N350K(if you choose 3 Months)
182 DAYS: I= N10m × 14/100 ×182/364, your automatic interest(ROI) = N700K(if you choose 6 months)
364 DAYS: I= N10m × 14/100 ×364/364, your automatic interest(ROI) = N1,400,000(if you choose 1 year)
From above, your ROI from Tbill in 3 months is almost the same as your ROI from your savings account in 12 months. In fact, your ROI will be higher if interest rate from Tbill is greater than 14%.
BOTTOM LINE: Would you rather leave your N10m in the savings account for ONE YEAR and make extra N360K OR Invest your N10m in Tbill for ONE YEAR and make extra N1,400,000 on top of your invested capital? The choice is yours...
PLS NOTE: Consider principle and interest rate used above as random numbers, however calculations are 99.9% accurate. You may verify! good job fellow investors, pls also help analyze a scenario where d same 10million is invested in mmf for a year.what's going to be the difference between a year tbills & a year mmf yield. ? thanks in anticipation |

CompareDBest: We admire your analysis sir/ma! Can you give specifics regarding your Access pre-liquidation so we have a better real life example for reference?
There is 5% VAT on some/all fees depending on the bank and market you buy tbills from (not on the upfront interest itself). However, even if we assume this applied and his Rediscount Rate was the 11% common in FirstBank’s secondary market at the time, it still does not add up to 11k. We agree with your assessment; note also we believe the 25% penal charge probably comes from Fixed Deposit early termination treatment, which is 20% forfeiture of interest earned for FirstBank.
We gave the example on that link not for the specifics, but because it states with the clearest evidence yet that you can lose part of your capital. If it helps, we have asked most commercial banks too and they echo that truth, in their own words, clear as day, black and white. dre is nothing like 5% vat on tb investment either prymary or secondary market, also no 25% penal charges whatsoever on earlier liquidation. your analysis above only applicable to fixed deposit investment. dey might av played a fast one on u guys. confirm if truly your investment is a tb nd not fd. what's applicable on tb is safekeep fees which is 0.05% or 0.1% and #300 as processing fees depending on your bank. on the other side, if u r liquidating your tb earlier b4 maturity, u will be charged only #300 and ur rediscounted rate to be minus from ur face value. thanks |

Agbeni33: please i need explanation on this issue.
I went to stanbic bank last week(12 /02/2019) for last week auction. i filled the form and it was submitted. the lady said are should come back on the 13th which is the real day for the auction to know the rate at which the TB will be bought.when i got there she told me that she bought the TB from the primary market that i will receive email and debit alert message. since then i didn't see any email message nor debit alert. to my greatest surprise someone else paid money into my account and i discovered that the money i recommended for the TB as been deducted without debit message and email message. my question is, does that mean that my bid as been successful? if yes, why is there no any evidence? the lady attended to me said are should be expecting message since last week. please what is the solution? from experience, there should be alert on every bank transactions either tb or not. u need to visit d bank nd demand some explanation s |

skyangel: For the secondary, i invested just 600k, @14.2% for 356days. From the e'certificate mailed me, i'll be getting 696k at maturity. Note that some change of less than 500 naira was returned to my acct.
For primary, the interest was paid upfront, the rate was about 14.854% (from my calculations) for 364 days
Hope my explanation is clear sure, thanks |

skyangel: Since i've gained a whole lot of knowledge from this very thread, i equally want to give a little contribution based on recent experience with stanbic. I submitted 2 forms to purchase tbills from both secondary mkt & primary (last auction), i gave instruction that both interest be reinvested, though no space in their form to fill in that.. Just told the banker who used biro to note it on the two forms. Result i got.: The interest was reinvested for the secondary while that of primary was left smiling in my account. Was i disappointed? YES My conclusion based on the above, Stanbic can reinvest interest only if it's secondary & not primary auction
Any one with contrary experience fron stanbic may share kudos madam, kindly buttress ur clue with figures. for instance, u invest 1million naira @15% pa. nd u invest both upfront interest along in d deal, how much will ur cumulative investment yield be @ maturity? |

aremso: Pls ma you can mail me on arem.sam@gmail.com so I can send some materials to you for you to study as guide. I don't tell people stocks to buy except my households so I want u to do it yourself. Since my experience of 2008 market crashed, I have told myself that I can't make loss again in capital market and as such, I went extra mile to read about stock investment. Even my broker can't tell me stocks to buy and time to buy it. I only discuss with him occasionally to sample his mind on a stock after I have done my due diligence. Before I could buy diff stocks like 10 companies but now just max of 4 and am OK for my yr target and am thinking of reducing it to just 2. These are the result of self research and due diligence. Get prepared and become great like my mentor Warren buffet, many will keep complaining about APC PDP while guys are making millions legitimately. See you in the board room! pls I also need d material- akerewe@gmail.com |
