The truth is that the average Nigerian doesn't really care what happens and long as he's feeding his family.

~Sauron~: Nigerians for what they are submit their moral values and vote in thugs in Agbada into power and yet they expect em to deliver. We cannot EAT our cakes and have em. Every country gets the government it deserves. Very correct |

~Sauron~: How are these allocations shared? Does it take the staggering population of a state like Lagos into consideration. Nigeria cannot move forward if the citizens fail to pay their taxes. . . . .The Government cannot be held responsible for people's dishonesty of NOT declaring their monthly income. There is no disputing the fact that we should pay our taxes. . . The point people are making (including myself) is that the government makes so much money which can be used for development purposes |

agitator: I remember one transporter tried to repair some really bad spots along the East/West Road and he was arrested by the Mins of Works. If he didnt obtain permission to do it then then the ministry was right to arrest him. But the sad part is that if he had gone to obtain permission, he would have been asked for money. Na wah |

~Sauron~: What about the shoemakers and the mechanics? Those ones pay their taxes too? The closest to taxes is the fee they pay to their unions. Something like national union of shoemakers. Such funds should go into government coffers but union members usually embezzle them |

~Sauron~: People pay taxes in Nigeria? All those market traders are taxed?? Yeah. We pay taxes of course but the system is not as effective as it is in the UK Most people evade it though as you have to declare what you earn so you could be taxed and you know in this country, your earnings cant be tracked so people just lie about it. The only kind of tax market women pay is to the union and that gets embezzled by union members. People that work in organized places like banks get taxed from source like its done over there. |
Politics › Re: Nigerians Should Stop Moaning And Roll Up Their Sleeves by akinalabi(m): 11:23pm On Nov 01, 2009 |
~Sauron~: Akinalabi, your taxes should be paying for all those. The UK is crisp because the government rip everyone's pockets to pay tax. Road tax, NI contributions, MOT, Council tax, TV License, etc . . . . . If all Nigerians put 10-30% of their income in a seperate account and pool it together. . . . .things will be a bit okay. Thats what I'm saying. We pay taxes so the government should provide these things. If they don't we will continue to complain and ask for it. The guy is saying something like we shouldnt keep complaining and do businesses as if that will solve our problems |

ROSSIKE: I doubt I had up to N2,000 when I started as a computer technician, fixing peoples' computers, after borrowing a friend's manual, even though I read economics at uni and couldn't get a paid job commensurate with my qualifications. The biz blossomed, and today I'm into all sorts of business at home and abroad, simply because I refused to let ''govt'' dictate the limits of what I could achieve, by their actions or inactions. I refused to sit at home with the degree, jobless and blaming govt for not providing an ''enabling environment'' for me to succeed.
I just got off the phone with my cousin who lives in Jos. I called him to inform him of a site he could visit on the web, to learn the production of simple, home-made wind turbines that can be used to generate electricity, for next to nothing. He can learn it and offer to set it up for others for a fee. A cheap affordable system may not power the fridge and hi fi etc, but it sure as hell will light up the house and power your pc!! If the point of this thread is to ask people to do great things for themselves and not use the excuse of bad governance as an excuse, I agree with you but don't for one moment think people doing businesses will get us out of this hole. I'm a business person myself starting with almost nothing and has had quite some success. That wont fix our roads, get us good hospitals, electricity and all that. We will continue to ask the government to do their job. Kobojunkie: Just to be sure I get it right this time, what particular GOVERNMENT agency did you file your claim with? I read the MTN and ZAIN examples, as well as you stating you sent complaints TO the newspapers but I don't see you stating anywhere that you actually filed a complaint at any local or state government agency. Did I miss a post or something? He said he's been to PHCN office at zone 4 abuja on mumerous occassions |

Kobojunkie: From my understanding, this is not really about doing business in Nigeria but someone postulating that IF more people opened more businesses in Nigeria, the Nigerian problem would go away. We know that is not true because, many Nigerians, both at home and abroad already own and run one or more businesses in Nigeria. The gospel of SELF RELIANCE has NOT WORKED in Nigeria's case. We need to admit this and understand that we cannot continue to simplify, or brush aside the Nigerian problem is such a way. Then he must be silly. |

rhymz: @PrinceKC While I agree with your point,I also think U are going a bit of point. This isn't a debate of the Diaspora against Nigerian residents, the poster wasn't even exclusively criticizing the Diaspora,he was talking about Nigerians in general that sit back and complain just about everything without offering any alternatives. I am all for criticisms but constructive ones not the type that leaves bad tastes in the mouth and despondence in the air.If thesame Nigeria turns around 2morow this same Sect that ve taken to unneccessarily bashing Nigeria will be the first to want to reap where they never sowed. My point is it's Ok to whine, complain, criticize but dön't stop there go further, everyone of us should see it as a personal task to be the change we want in this country,we can't all be whining or bailing out the country,Nigeria can only get better through our collective efforts,we can form pressure groups, write articles that can inspire others, inform others about what is going on in our polity.A majority of Nigerian youths do not read newspapers or listen to news,we can inform them, that's how we effect change,my slogan has always been "be the change".Afterall,if U come from a family where a majority of the members are losers and U knöw in your heart that U want a change, won't U look pass all the shortcomings in the family and strive to make a change. If there's wide spread spirited activism amongst our youth,I tell U things will start to look up not this siddon throway stone wey most ppl dey like do.Those of us in Diaspora whom to an extent are financially well off and having seen the best of lives and orderliness can even start by inciting those of us here in Nigeria to take up the mantle of change instead sitting down with your McDonalds Burger and Coca cola and in the throes of your enjoyment U just spew rubbish and tell everyone they can't do it until Yaradua does it! Finall,I will leave U all with this quote from the message of Dr Eric William's Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago to the Youths of the Nation at Independence Youth Rally,30th August 1962,"To your loving hands the future of the nation is entrusted. In your innocent hearts the pride of the nation is enshrined. On your scholastic development the salvation of the nation is dependent. When U return to your classes after independence, remember therefore, each and everyone of U,that U carry the Future of Trinidad & Tobago in your School bags" This message is aptly reffering to every Nigerian Youth that wants a positive change. Its hard to make a head or tail of what you typed above. And its not even easy to read |

Princek12: T Crack,
You must be smoking that crack, for real. So landlords should watch politicians embezzle their taxes and Fed Govt. allocation; and while observing this, these landlords should still utilize their hard-earned money or probably loans to build roads, which is clearly a government prerogative. Do you realize that this could dramatically increase rent prices since the landlords will most likely pass the cost to the tenants? And your big mouth will complain about high rent. Please go to rehab. Thank you. . . Someone struggles to build a house for his family (probably still in debt) and he should be the one to fix the road again? Thats nonsense. I remember a company going to the local government that they want to fix their road and the LG officials said they should bring money Can you imagine? There is al lof of madness going on this country. The government should do their jobs and we wont stop talking until they do it |

What's the point of the OP
Is he trying to say people should not travel out of the country any longer or people should not criticize the government?
There is no questioning the fact that opportunities abound for anyone in Nigeria that wants to take them but does that solve power problems, bad roads, security etc? |
