Politics › Reactions Trail Aregbesola's Plan To Spend 50m On Fireworks And Xmass Decoration by alcmene(op): 5:02pm On Dec 14, 2015
Osun state governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has been criticised for allegedly approving N50million on fireworks and Christmas decorations.

The allegation was made by the Osun state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday, December 14, who described the project as “wasteful spending and mis placement of priority”.

According to the PDP, since Aregbesola came on board in 2010, his administration usually adorn strategic places in Osogbo the state capital and some major towns with lightings decorations and fireworks during festive seasons.

In a statement issued in Osogbo yesterday by its director of media and publicity, Prince Diran Odeyemi, the PDP said “It is absurd, a waste of scarce resources that suggests some people are hiding behind the project to steal public funds.

“Why would a sensitive governor at this critical period be planning to expend such a huge amount that is only N5million short of the net Osun allocation after deductions of all debts for month of October, on fireworks, what are celebrating in Osun.

“In the past, Mr. Aregbesola had used this particular means to waste public funds and no one dare question him. But at this point that federal allocation of four years time had already been spent by Mr. Governor since last year August, then we are taking it upon ourselves to expose the shady deal.

“If truly no one would benefit from the contract sum, the government should immediately suspend the plan because what people in Osun need at the moment is not Christmas decorations but their salary to buy food.

“Obviously, Government House is not lacking food and other basic necessities. However, Mr. Governor should know majority of homes in Osun could no longer afford three square meal, no thanks to capital flight, irregular payment of salaries, non payment for services rendered for government and poor patronage of local contractors by the present administration.

In the light of these, Mr. Aregbesola should give pay workers salary and not fireworks through which some people will milk the state.”

Meanwhile, Aregbesola recently sought the approval of the Osun State Assembly to enable him withdraw N1.25 billion from the Omoluabi Conservation Fund. He said the withdrawal would help the state government in providing necessary infrastructure.

Finance Minister, Kemi Adeosun, at the opening of the 7th Annual Bankers Committee retreat in Lagos, predicted that year 2016 would be a tough year for Nigeria.

She also noted that Nigeria is facing some significant micro-economic challenges that required some fiscal house-keeping.

In her words, “It is going to be tough and we are going to have to make extremely tough decision. We have got the resilience and space to do that.”

Adeosun however predicted that there was still hope for Nigeria as the debt to GDP ratio is at 12 percent and that gives space to run a deficit budget which in turn will enable the stimulating of the economy.

In her words, “To do so, we need to do some fiscal housekeeping. We have to control the significant challenge we have around recurrent. If you look at recurrent at a percentage of our total budget with the just approved supplementary budget, it is about 90 percent. If we continue in that trajectory, every penny we borrow will go into recurrent,” she said.

President of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari attended the Funeral Service of Late Gen. Mathiew Kerekou (Former President of Republic of Benin) at Friendship Stadium in Cotonou, Benin Republic on Thursday.

According to a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday by Mr Femi Adesina, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Buhari spoke on behalf of other African leaders during the funeral.

The statement read “Buhari described the deceased as a beloved leader of his people and an ardent advocate of international cooperation who would be greatly missed within and outside his country.

“On behalf of my colleagues, fellow presidents and leaders of our continent of Africa, I rise today, to speak in honour of a departed African statesman, a father of his nation, indeed a founding father of ECOWAS.

“Gen. Mathieu Kerekou was a great defender, fervent lover and pursuer of international peace, solidarity and security.

“We recall that in pursuance of his commitment to peace, stability and progress in his country, Kerekou voluntarily established the political framework for the return of Benin Republic to democratic governance in the 1990s.

“His two democratic mandates from 1996 to 2006 underscored the ardent love his people had for him as a great leader.

“That period witnessed great democratic freedom that continues to exist today, as the foundation for lasting peace and stability in Benin Republic.”

Politics › Agitation For Biafra Legitimate.… – Lai Mohammed by alcmene(op): 5:35pm On Dec 10, 2015
ABUJA – The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Thursday, called on religious leaders across the country, particularly those in the south-east region to appeal to those agitating for the republic of Biafra to let peace reign in the region for even development.

Lai Mohammed, who was speaking at the Peace Conversation with religious leaders organized by the National Orientation Agency (NOA), in Abuja, urged them to de-radicalise those who had been exposed to violent religion views.

He said it is the duty of religious leaders to preach undiluted messages of their faiths and making their followers see the reasons Nigeria has to stay together as an indivisible entity.

“You, our revered religious leaders, have a great role to
play in this respect. Top on the list of these roles is the need to de-radicalize those who have been exposed to extremist and violent view of religion, especially in the North-east.

“It is important for you, our religious leaders, to highlight the pristine and unadulterated version of the two dominant religious faith, Christianity and Islam, to remind all the adherents of both faith that nowhere did any of them preach hatred and violence,” he said.

The Minister said though the agitation for Biafra was legitimate, they should take appropriate channel to ventilate their discontent, while allowing the government address the issues raised, advising religious leaders to serve as appealing voice to aggrieved people.

He said; “At a time of agitations in some parts of the country by persons who believe their interests have not been well catered for in the Federation over the years, our religious leaders can serve as an appealing voice to these aggrieved citizens.

“They can help them understand that while they have the right to ventilate their discontent, there is the need to do so using only the appropriate and established channels while allowing the government time to address the issues they raise without constituting themselves as a threat to the peace of their neighbour.”

Stressing the necessity for peace to reign in the country, the minister said the level of destruction in the north-east region is inexplicable for the government to allow another set of people to plunge another part of the country into war.

“The kind of destruction and devastation that I saw in those areas convinced me, more than ever, that the perpetrators are not adherents of any religion but a bunch of mad people.

“Our religious leaders must make this point loud and clear for the benefit of the gullible ones who may
want to believe that those perpetrating the heinous killings in the North-east subscribe to any faith,” he said.

Lai Mohammed explained that with the effort of the Nigerian Military to restore peace to the troubled region, it beholds on all and sundry to join hands with the government to promote peace in the country.

“The military is doing their bit to restore peace to the affected communities. What is missing, however, is the civilian component of the war, the need for all Nigerians to support the military and also own the war,” he appealed.

Culture › New Yoruba Nation Coming Soon, Says Ooni by alcmene(op): 11:29am On Dec 08, 2015
ILE-IFE — NEWLY-crowned Ooni of Ife Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi has promised that a new Yoruba nation where youth empowerment is the focus will emerge during his tenure. Ogunwusi’s coronation is coming five months after the demise of Oba Okunade Sijuwade, who passed on at 85. The new Ooni is the 51st Ooni to ascend the throne, and his coronation came exactly 35 years and one day after the immediate-past Ooni, Oba Sijuade was presented the staff of office.

Remarkably, the ancient city of Ile Ife stood still yesterday, as he was presented with the staff of office and instrument of appointment. Roads leading to the palace was on lock down by security operatives, leaving a red carpet path for the monarch and invited dignitaries.

Guests and invitees from all walks of life thronged the palace to catch a glimpse of the coronation ceremony of the Ooni of Ife.

In fact, it took the intervention of security presence of the Army, Police, Civil Defence and other paramilitary organizations to control the crowd at the venue.

The ceremony, held at Afewonro Park, Enuwa, had in attendance dignitaries. It was full of glamour as groups attired in colourful dresses adorned the perimeters of the venue. Traditional rulers from different climes, including the Sultan of Sokoto, Saad Abubakar II, and Olu of Warri were not left out as drums and trumpets announced their arrival.

Large turnout

Strangely, due to the large turn out, many guests remained standing due to the unavailability of seats. Asides this, prayers were offered in Christian, Muslim and Ifa traditional religions ways to ensure equality of religions at the event. Co-chairman of the National Traditional Council,

His Eminence, Saad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, noted that the coming of Oba Ogunwusi to the throne was timely, saying the demand for recognition by youth should not be taken lightly.

The Sultan said all traditional rulers in the country would give the Ooni the needed support to lead the change to get the youth positively engaged being one of them.

Be virtuous, Osinbajo tasks Ooni: In his goodwill message, Vice President Osinbajo, who represented President Muhammadu Buhari at the event, said the throne of Ooni, being a deep and revered institution among the Yoruba people carries the responsibility of the race.

He, however, urged the Ooni of Ife to be virtuous and ensure his ascension is not just to make wealth and pleasure.

The Vice President said the land of Ife was blessed with the choice of a young and virtuous son of Ife.

Osinbajo said “As we celebrate with pomp today (yesterday), we are reminded of the great responsibility that is thrusted on you as the representative of the virtuous.”

While urging the newly-crowned monarch to take the responsibility of leading the people on the path of virtue very seriously, the VP prayed that God would give him (monarch) the wisdom and courage to lead the people.

Aregbesola tasks Ooni on nation building: On his part, the Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola said the throne of Ooni comes will lots of privileges, calling on the monarch to handle the responsibilities attached to the throne with fear of God and large heartedness.

He urged him to draw on the wisdom of the people by listening to them and advised him against pursuing naked personal interest at the expense of the larger interests of his subjects.

According to the governor, the Ooni must mobilize his subjects to support government in its bid to implement its programmes by enlightening them on the need to pay taxes. “New Ooni must work towards fostering unity among his subjects across, not a unity that will be achieved through coercion. Your attitude will be the cardinal determinant of your success. Try to carry along all in decision making,” Aregbesola said.

I’m for youth empowerment — Ooni Ogunwusi

In his speech, Oba Ogunwusi, promised to build a new Yoruba nation where all traditional rulers will unite and promote unity among the ethnic group.

Speaking shortly after receiving his staff of office, the Ooni dedicated his staff to Nigerian youth and promised to liaise with people in leadership positions to fashion out ways that the teeming youthful population can be engaged.

The monarch stated that shortly after he was named Ooni-elect, he immediately commenced interfacing with monarchs across the country, declaring that during his reign, there won’t be competition, stressing the need for a more united Yoruba nation.

“Shortly after I was named Ooni-elect, I sprang into action. I called my friend, Oba Saheed Elegushi, I spoke to the Sultan of Sokoto. I also called Kabiyesi, the Alaafin. I spoke to the Awujale and the Alake. I am prepared for the throne and this is not accidental.

“I am close to many monarchs and uniting them should not be a problem. It will be easy. No competition with anyone. And I want to announce to the entire world that a new Yoruba nation is coming,” the monarch said.

Sports › No Nigerian Supporter Was Banned For Hoisting Biafran Flag In Senegal - Ladipo by alcmene(op): 4:28pm On Dec 07, 2015
Chairman of the Nigeria Supporters Club has denied the reports making rounds that Nigerian supporters were expelled from the stadium during the U-23 AFCON match between Nigeria and Algeria.
Contrary to reports making round that Nigerian football fans were expelled from the football stadium in Senegal for displaying Biafran flags during the match between Nigeria’s Dream Team VI and the U-23 national team of Algeria, president of the Nigeria Supporters Club, Rafiu Ladipo has explained that he is not aware of such, adding that Nigerian supporters are yet to land in Senegal.

In a telephone interview with Naij.com Sports on Sunday December 6, Rafiu disclosed that he and crew are sourcing for money and will surely be in the host country before the Semi-final clash with the host team.

He said: “I am not aware of this. I am in Nigeria and if they ban supporters, it cannot be Nigerian supporters because none of our people have gone there. It could be fans but not Nigerian supporters.

“We are still in Nigeria and contemplating on going there, so I am not aware of such,” he said.

Asked if he thinks Siasia’s side can manage to get to the Olympics, Rafiu explained that it is going to be difficult against the home team, but Nigeria can still make it to the Olympics.

“It is going to be a tough match but if we put our house together, we may be able to defeat them. I know whatever happens, we will still get to the Olympics since three teams will eventually qualify,” he said.

The Supporters Club president disclosed that he lost his father over the week, but will still do everything possible to lead his crew to Senegal.

He said: “Last week I lost my father and I have been occupied with the burial arrangements, however, I am yet to confirm if our supporters were banned.
However, there had been earlier reports that a group of Nigerian football supporters caused tension and were ordered to leave the stands by the Senegalese football association who considered the display of the Biafran flags at the Leopold Sedar Senghor stadium “a militant act”.

According to Premium Times, Amadou Kane, the vice president of the Senegalese Football Federation immediately ordered security agents at the stadium to tear down Biafran flags, posters, as well as expelled the supporters involved.

Some of the fans were alleged to have worn branded T-shirts, with Biafra logo and also used the opportunity to call for Biafran autonomy.

The game eventually ended 0 – 0 with Nigeria and Algeria progressing to the semi-final.

Nigeria’s Dream Team VI will face hosts Senegal in the semi-final, while South Africa and Algeria will battle in the second semi-final of the U-23 African Nations Cup.

Politics › Some APC Leaders Blocked My Ministerial Appointment – Falana by alcmene(op): 3:35pm On Dec 07, 2015
Respected lawyer, Femi Falana has pointed accusing fingers at some leaders of the All Progressives Congress for his failure to become a minister after rumours had circulated in the media space that he would be appointed a minister by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Falana said the leaders, whom he did not name, blocked the bid because of “ideological reasons”.

According to him, some people told him he was “too radical” and should not be made the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, The Cable reported.

In an interview with The Interview magazine, Falana said: “I was actually contacted. I was actually invited to come on board. It took me appreciable time to make up my mind. Along the way, I was made to understand there were people who were opposed to my appointment for ideological reasons. It is their right to do so.”

Furthermore, he said he saw the opportunity to become a minister as a call to service and not for self-aggrandisement.

While stressing that he had put the experience behind him, Falana stated that he had to disappoint some people who felt he should go cap in hand to plead with some entrenched interests to put a good word in for him.

He said the individual he was told to beg was someone he fought when he headed a university at a time students were killed.

Falana said: “I had to support the students’ cause at that time. You don’t then expect me to go to him and swallow my vomit. This is what I mean by the ideological price.”

Politics › Fasehun: President Buhari Has Lost Focus by alcmene(op): 1:41pm On Dec 07, 2015
The National Chairman of the Unity Party of Nigeria, Dr. Frederick Fasehun, says although President Muhammadu Buhari started well, the President has lost focus.
Fasehun said Buhari’s zeal for transforming Nigeria, which restored Nigerians’ hope after his inauguration, has reduced.
The UPN leader, who said this in a statement on Sunday, advised the President to stop his frequent foreign trips and concentrate on improving governance in the country.

According to him, Nigerians want Buhari to remain at home and perform his responsibilities rather than travelling around the world.
Fasehun said, “The President is missing in action. Initially, we said Nigeria under Buhari was flying in autopilot but now the country has receded into ‘sabbaticals’, with no petrol, no jobs, no power, no salaries, and people are waiting for their President to give them a Happy New Year, especially when the time comes to pay children’s school fees in the new year.

“Nigerians are concerned about the lingering insecurity, the missing Chibok girls, the puzzling fuel shortage, unemployment, galloping inflation, the falling value of the naira, the dwindling value of stocks in the capital market, the power crisis and so on. The government should concentrate on finding solutions to all these and stop this futile chasing of shadows.”

Fasehun also said any attempt by the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government to gag the opposition would fail.
The UPN chairman accused the APC government of playing a holier-than-thou attitude by giving the impression that those in the ruling party were all ‘saints’ whereas those who served under opposition parties were evil and corrupt.

He urged the government to check the activities of security agencies and ensure that they do not infringe on the fundamental human rights of political opponents.
He added, “The continued covering of APC politicians widely seen as corrupt shows that the so-called fight against corruption is merely a witch-hunt aimed at the opposition. Let someone tell the APC that politics and elections ended on the day President Buhari took the oath of office and governance and nation-building must begin in earnest.

“This intimidating change makes us feel nostalgic about the crusading voices of Gani Fawehinmi, Beko Ransome-Kuti, Olu Onagoruwa, Wole Soyinka, Ubani Chima, Matthew Kukah, Olubunmi Okogie and others.”

Politics › Arewa Group Accuses Buhari Of Political Witch-hunt by alcmene(op): 3:46pm On Dec 05, 2015
A socio-political group, the Arewa Youth for Progress and Development, yesterday accused the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration of going out of its way to witch-hunt political opponents in the polity.
The group’s President, Danjuma Sarki, noted that it was unfortunate that anyone who holds a contrary position to that of the ruling All progressive congress (APC) had been subjected to intimidation and harassment with the use of coercive apparatus of power.

Urging the Buhari-led administration to retrace its steps in the interest of democratic rule, the group claimed that it is becoming obvious that the nation is gradually drifting towards dictatorship and anarchy.
It noted: “We categorically and unequivocally condemn these acts in their entirety. These have apparently shown that the administration of President Buhari and the ruling party are on a vendetta mission of witch-hunt, molestation, blackmail and persecution of the opposition or any dissenting voice.

“Our organisation has viewed with great concern, the spate of unwarranted witch-hunt, bully and harassment of political opponents under the guise of the fight against corruption by the Buhari administration, using the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) and the Department of State Service (DSS).

It is quite unfortunate, worrisome and sad that since the advent of the current government, its stock-in-trade has been the intimidation and harassment of members of the opposition and anyone who holds a contrary opinion to that of the government or the ruling party.
The organisation noted that “The recent invitation and subsequent detention of high Chief Raymond Dokpesi, His Excellency, Alh. Attahiru Bafarawa, former Governor of Sokoto State, Alh. Bashir Yuguda, the former Minister for Finance and others are clear cases of witch-hunt, harassment, intimidation; growing level of impunity; abuse of the rule of law and gross violation of human right which are becoming very alarming and call for great concern by all patriotic, civil society organizations, the media and the international community.”

It said: “We categorically and unequivocally condemn these acts in their entirety, these have apparently shown that the administration of President Buhari and the ruling party are on a vendetta mission of witch-hunt, molestation, blackmail and persecution of the opposition or any dissenting voice.”

Politics › Fayose To Governors: Cut Your Minimum Wives Not Wages by alcmene(op): 4:27pm On Dec 04, 2015
Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose, has dissociated himself from calls by some state governors that the salaries of public servants be reduced or that there should be massive retrenchment in the public sector.

Instead of reducing salaries and sacking workers, Fayose admonished the state governors to reduce the affluence they enjoy in office and put an end to wastages.

According to a statement issued in Ado-Ekiti on Friday by the Governor's Chief Press Secretary, Mr Idowu Adelusi, the governor said this during the Agenda for the Treasury Board meeting held as part of preparation of the state's 2016 budget.

"Today most newspapers carried the story about call by some state governors that the minimum wage of N18,000 be reduced or that there should be massive retrenchment of workers in the public service. They are on their own and I take exemption to that. The minimum wage is even not enough.

"Reduction of wages or retrenchment of workers won't happen in Ekiti State. Instead of those anti-labour and anti-people policies, the governors should cut down on their travels and tours and cut down minimum wives and children and their affluence. Let the governors cut their coats according to their sizes."

Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum and governor of Zamfara state had on Thursday told newsmen inn Abuja that the current low prices in oil prices was making the payment of N18, 000 minimum wage impossible for state governments.

He said it would either be reviewed downward or workers would face sack.
