Politics › Fuel Scarcity: APC Write Nigerians by alcmene(op): 4:51pm On Nov 25, 2015
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that the party is aware of the hardship Nigerians are passing through over the current fuel scarcity.

The party on Wednesday made this statement following the ongoing fuel scarcity, saying the situation is being addressed.

“Let’s be a little more patient with the new cabinet of President Muhammadu Buhari. Most importantly, be assured that this government will surely deliver!

“Nothing good comes cheap. Sacrifices are required. By the time we pass through the foundation stage, Nigerians will see a new Nigeria!

Politics › 5 Months As A Governor, I Am Already Tired - El Rufai by alcmene(op): 11:17am On Nov 25, 2015
Kaduna state governor Nasir El-Rufai says the stress of seeking ways of creating jobs for the teeming unemployed youths in Kaduna state has left him tired after just 5 months of assuming office. El Rufai said this while speaking at the just-concluded Ake Arts and Book Festival which held in Abeokuta, Ogun State November 17-21.

“As a state governor the challenge for me is what to do to create jobs in Kaduna State. Eighty-two per cent of the eight million people in Kaduna State are below the age of 35.
My challenge is not whether population grows next year or the year after. It is to get jobs for this young people, otherwise no one will sleep in peace. Frankly speaking, five months as governor, I am already tired.

I honestly do not think that anyone who wants to do this job seriously can do it for more than four years and not burn out. When I look at some of my colleagues, some are putting on weight, they are looking nice, I ask them, ‘how do you do it?”he said

Politics › Crisis Looms In Health Sector As Donors Withdraw Funds-leadership by alcmene(op): 11:01am On Nov 25, 2015
Nigeria’s health sector that heavily depends on international donor funds may witness a reversal of current gains as donors withdraw such funds.

From the fight against HIV to poliomyelitis, Nigerian government contributes just a little over 20 percent of such disease responses.

With Nigeria currently rated as Africa’s biggest economy, the country is no longer qualified to receive many of the international donor grants meant for poor countries still struggling to achieve minimum standards of health and education.

The Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) Professor John Idoko said yesterday that Nigerian government funding for HIV activities is worrisome.

He said: “We signed an agreement with our biggest donor in 2011 that by 2015, Nigeria should be able to fund HIV related activities to 50 per cent.”

According to Idoko, up till now, government funding for HIV is still below 25 per cent.

“Clearly we are not doing well, we are the second most burdened country after South Africa. South Africa has about six million people with HIV and it contributes 90 per cent of funding for its HIV response. Currently, they have over three million people on drugs,” he said at a press conference to commence this year’s World AIDS Day in Abuja.

Politics › Buhari’s SGF In Trouble For Allegedly Collecting Cash Gift-naij.com by alcmene(op): 4:57pm On Nov 24, 2015
A social cultural group of concerned indigenes of Ebonyi state are demanding that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Engineer Babachir David Lawal, discloses how much of the state’s money their governor gave him as cash gift, The Union reports.

This is coming after Lawal was reported to have disclosed during a vote of thanks at a thanksgiving service held on October 17, in Abuja, that Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi state had made a gift of some cash to him after he had initially refused plan by the governor to send him some rice.

Part of his vote of thanks reads: “Another man who I just met recently; the man who read the second verse, David Umahi – what is your second name; whether Umuahia or something like that – really since the time we met, I don’t know why, our spirits locked on. And you see that he has been good; he is somebody I know that when am in trouble I can always run to him. This is a man; I don’t know but he is PDP; he’s Igbo but he sent a trailer load of rice to my governor for the IDPs in Adamawa state recently. May be he did not want me to say it.

“Again, one day I was just in my office looking and sounding broke, he just said ‘during the Sallah, I am going to send Ebonyi rice to you’. And I said I don’t want Ebonyi rice, I have too much rice in my house; I don’t even know what to do with the rice. So later his ADC comes and says oga sent me to you. And I said what is inside that thing and he said money and I said bring it my friend.”

The group however, as reported by The Union, said that it was giving President Muhammadu Buhari’s SGF 30 days to comply by disclosing the exact amount of money or face legal action, stressing that the money was given without budgetary approval and as such may have been an inducement.

The group in the petition dated November 11, 2015, and addressed to the SGF, titled ‘Request In Re: Freedom of Information Act’, believes that despite the fact that Lawal had openly spoken about the gesture, he should disclose fully what was given to him in the spirit of transparency and accountability so as to enable them put a check on the disbursement of state funds by the governor.

Politics › Biafra Protesters Prepares Massive Lagos Showdown-naij.com by alcmene(op): 3:52pm On Nov 24, 2015
Pro-Biafra agitators plan to move their protest to Lagos in a bid to show solidarity with Nnamdi Kanu, the director of Radio Biafra.

A lot of protests have been held in states in the eastern and some southern part of the country with a few resulting in violence.

In a statement released by Radio Biafra through their social media page, the agitators said they plan to stage a massive protest in Lagos in order to push for the release of Kanu and also to get their desired independent state of Biafra.

The director of Radio Biafra was arrested by security operatives and appeared in court in Abija on Monday, November 23. Pro-Biafra agitators were present to cheer him and also protest his arrest and continued detention amidst heavy security personnel.

The statement read:

Everybody should get ready for another ALMIGHTY upcoming peaceful protest, Lagos should also gear up because this time we will take our peaceful protest to every corner of Lagos state, Biafrans in Lagos should arise! The time has come to prove to the world that Biafra is not a terrorist or illegal organization. One of the major sponsor of Biafra is UNITED NATIONS.

We want to tell the world that we so much valued Nnamdi Kanu and Biafra. The protest will last until Nnamdi is released. We are not giving up! NEVER! We are Biafrans and when we start something we don’t stop half way. We must prepare and raise our Biafra flag HIGH AND HIGHER……..

NEVER SHALL WE GIVE UP ..GET READY FOR ANOTHER ALMIGHTY PEACEFUL PROTEST COMING SOON. THE STRUGGLE FOR FREEDOM HAS JUST BEGUN AND WE SHALL TAKE THE WORLD BY SURPRISE. WE SHALL SUFFER WITH NNAMDI KANU, WE SHALL STAND WITH HIM TILL THE END. NO BIAFRA NO PEACE FOR NIGERIA.

Meanwhile, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, the sultan of Sokoto has expressed worry over the growing agitation for an independent Biafra state championed by some Igbo people and promised that a delegation from the northern traditional council will be sent to Igbo leaders to meet on the issue.

Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka yesterday described the inability of the federal government to give account of the over 200 missing Chibok girls abducted by, Boko Haram, as a “shame”.

Soyinka spoke after a mega-school was named after him in Osun state by Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

He also said the school was an an “emphatic rejection of what Boko Haram insurgents preach”.

“It is a shame that the nation cannot account for over 200 girls in Chibok. I sympathise with the religious policy of governments in school; children must not be brought up feeling that religion inhibits knowledge.

“In schools, we need not distinguish our children, the fatalistic religious holiness and the holier-than-thou attitude must be reduced among our pupils.”

Politics › Why We Want To Discontinue Kanu's Trial-dss by alcmene(op): 5:51pm On Nov 23, 2015
The Department of State Services (DSS) on Monday requested a Wuse Zone 2 Senior Magistrates’ Court in Abuja to discontinue trial of Nnamdi Kanu, Director of Radio Biafra, charged with criminal conspiracy.

Kanu is standing trial on a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, intimidation and belonging to unlawful society, to which he pleaded not guilty.

At the resumed sitting of the case, prosecution counsel, Moses Idakwo, informed the court that after the arraignment of the accused, the complainant stumbled on some facts which took the matter out of the jurisdiction of the court. According to him, the complainant found out that the accused was involved in terrorism and has been financing it.
“The complainant is, therefore, applying to discontinue the matter under section 108(1) of administration of criminal justice act 2015.’’ Idakwo said that the DSS had also obtained an order from the Federal High Court, Abuja, dated Nov.10, to detain the accused in its custody for 90 days.
Objecting, Kanu’s counsel, Vincent Obetta, prayed the court not to discontinue the case because the prosecution did not present any information from the Attorney-General of Federation who had the authority to approve such.

Obetta told the court that the DSS violated the order of the court which granted bail that was perfected but not granted, adding that the accused had been in DSS custody since he was arrested.
Subsequently, the magistrate, Mr Usman Shuaibu, after listening to both counsels, adjourned the matter until Dec.1 for ruling.

Politics › Bayelsa Guber Race: MEND Issues Stern Warning To The Presidency by alcmene(op): 12:26pm On Nov 23, 2015
The presidency has been warned to stay clear of the forthcoming Bayelsa guber race, the warning was issued by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND).

MEND warned the presidency against any attempt to rig the December 5, 2015, governorship election in Bayelsa state.
The group’s advise was disclosed in a statement issued by its acting chairman, Prince Amaibi Horby (aka General Busta Rhymes) and 12 others on Sunday, November 22, in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.

According to the communique, MEND declared its support for Governor Seriake Dickson, who is the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

They said they were assuring him of Ijaw backing because he (Dickson) had performed well in executing people-oriented projects.

MEND stated that it would dispatch 500 members to monitor the exercise, particularly in the creeks.

The group noted that the governor is a product of the Ijaw struggle for resource control and self-determination in the Niger Delta, before venturing into active politics.

They stressed that he had contributed immensely to the socio-political and economic development of the Ijaw nation.

The statement reads: “We have endorsed Governor of Bayelsa State, Hon. Henry Seriake Dickson for a second term as Bayelsans gear up for December 5, 2015 election. Dickson, over the years, has performed creditably in office as he has driven development to the hinterland

“The Ijaw people are solidly behind him in this forthcoming election, and we will ask our members to monitor the election in the state, especially in the vast creeks of Bayelsa, where we are deep-rooted to avoid intimidation and possible rigging by the enemies of Ijawland and their Abuja collaborators.”

“We are mustering total support for him because he is a product of the Ijaw struggle for resource control and self-determination in the Niger Delta. So far, he has contributed immensely to the vast socio-political and economic development of the Ijaw nation,” the group said.

Today.ng reports that the group said any attempt to rig the election would re-awake “a sleeping dog.”

The group said: “We wish to admonish President Muhammadu Buhari not to engage election riggers in the governorship election as such vicious and surreptitious antics shall not only be vehemently resisted, but may also lead to waking the sleeping dog from sleep.”

They also called on the United Nations and international community to be witnesses, stressing that such act would be resisted.

“We call on the United Nations and, indeed, the international community to bear us witness as we are not unaware of the planned use of ‘federal might’ to intimidate the people of Bayelsa State in favour of their chosen candidate,” the group said.

President Muhammadu Buhari and Nigeria has joined other peace-loving nations of the world in condemning Friday’s dastardly terrorist attack on a hotel in Bamako, Mali.

Buhari assures President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and the people of Mali of the full support and solidarity of the Federal Government and people of Nigeria as they mourn those who lost their lives in the attack and strive to bring the surviving perpetrators to justice.

The President also extended his heartfelt condolences to the governments and people of China, Russia, the United States and Belgium whose nationals sadly lost their lives in the heinous and callous attack.

Against the background of persisting atrocities in Nigeria and other countries across the world, President Buhari calls once again for an intensification of international cooperation against all known terrorist organisations, their collaborators and sponsors.

The President reaffirmed that Nigeria, under his leadership, remains committed to deploying all necessary resources and working with friendly nations, regional, continental and global organisations to speedily overcome the continuing threat of terrorism to world peace and security.

Politics › Soldiers Storm Kwara Over Benin Republic Invasion by alcmene(op): 12:33pm On Nov 21, 2015
Amidst disagreement over the invasion of Okuta in Baruten local government area by neighbouring Benin Republic, fully armed soldiers on Friday, November 20, went to the affected 16 communities to get firsthand information.

The soldiers arrived in Okuta at about 3pm and had a brief meeting with the Emir of Okuta and his traditional chiefs and went to visit the affected areas.

Meanwhile, the residents of Okuta and the affected villages went about their normal business as there was no violence or threat to peace from any quarter. Efforts to speak with the Emir of Okuta, Alhaji Idris Serio Abubakar, were not successful as it was alleged to that he had been ordered from above not to speak on the matter.

According to a recent letter to the governor titled Encroachment of Nigerian Territory by Benin Republic at Okuta District of Baruten Local Government area of Kwara state, the traditional ruler warned: “Recently some pillars were reconstructed and mounted at the back of the doors of Boriya village (at river Moshi) and Benin Republic.

“The colonial pillars of Imamue to Boriya Moshi rivers is about 25km.The present land in question has the following Nigeria villages Ogamue, Munta, Bwin, Gandogbeba, Saka Yeruman Kparu, Ajuba, Simen. Kparu, Sosi Kparu, Dotin. Nkparu and Tende with not less than 22,.000 people as inhabitants, wishing to be claimed by Benin Republic. It is a terrible trespass and not acceptable to our communities.‎

“Unless the Beninoise are restricted and made to vacate the area being encroached by them, they will continue with their said encroachment thereby illegally extending their territory beyond what legally belong to them. We are not ready and will never be ready to concede this land to Benin Republic. We don’t have any place where these villages could be resettled, it is the only viable economic and farm land of the whole district.”

The Kwara state government has denied reports that 16 villages in the state have been invaded and occupied by Benin Republic.

In a statement issued by the commissioner for information and communication, Alhaji Mahmud Ajeigbe, on Friday, November 20, said the affected villages of Okuta District in Baruten local government area of the state are calm and still under the control of the federal government.

The statement further stressed that although no foreign government has erected any structure nor hoisted their national flag in any of the villages as erroneously reported in the media, the state government has alerted the security agencies on the reports.

On the contrary, the vice chairman of Baruten local council, Abdulrasheed Lafia, who doubles as the chairman of the Local Government Boundary Commission said on Friday, November 20, that the affected 16 villages actually belonged to Benin Republic based on an earlier agreement.

He said that the issue surrounding the disputed Ogomue land had been resolved since 2005.

Lafia claimed that the National Boundary Commission after it visited the site in 2004 along with officials of the state and local government boundary committees had resolved that the land actually belonged to Benin Republic.

He said the news of an invasion in the area was sponsored by disgruntled individuals who are dissatisfied with the position of the commission.

Consequently, the defence headquarters had said that no Nigerian territory will be allowed into the hands of intruders or any foreign nation and that it has set up a high powered investigative panel to probe the reported invasion of Nigeria’s territory by Benin Republic.
