Politics / International Women's Day: Philanthropist Dr. Godwin Maduka Salutes Women by AlexReports(m): 4:30pm On Mar 08, 2022
As the world marks the 2022 International Day of Women, a renowned philanthropist and former governorship candidate in Anambra, Dr. Godwin Maduka has congratulated women globally for their roles in the world socio-economic development, noting that they have helped making the world liveable.

According to the medical practitioner of global repute, at a time like this, no effort should be spared to ensure the advancement and promotion of women participation at top decision-making tables, particularly in Nigeria.

In a felicitation message on Tuesday, he however expressed regret that despite so much contributions Nigerian women have made in lubricating the economy through their massive involvement in small-scale businesses as well as catering for the children at homes, an effort to enhance their presence in the political scene through the gender Bills suffered a setback at the National Assembly.

While urging women not to relent but unite to press for that which is right for the society and world generally, he pledged to as a private citizen continue to ensure that women are given a pride of place in his establishments and humanitarian outreaches.

"This we have manifested this in our campaign for an enhanced living for the women in Anambra and beyond. Our charity network has initiated and completed befitting homes for over 100 widows. This is in addition to empowerment schemes targeted at ensuring that a vast majority of our women are meaningfully engaged.

"Also, over 70 percent of our staff strength is made up of women, not just in our Las Vegas hospitals but other interests.

"Our society has not been very fair to the womanhood and this we shall continue to lend our support to correct. Women are pillars and enablers of stability in homes and larger society. They deserve all the support to realise their full potentials" he added.

Free, Critical Media Essential For Survival Of Democracy, Says NGE President Isah

As Nigeria grapple with efforts to enhance democratic ethos, the National President of Nigerian Guild of Editors, NGE Mr. Mr. Mustapha Isah has said a free and critical media is essential to ensure that democracy thrives.

According to Mr. Isah, the media owes it a duty to hold the government accountable to the masses in line with section 22 of the Nigerian Constitution, adding that a robust media ensures that elected and appointed officials of the government account to the people who elected them.

Mr. Isah spoke on Thursday in Abuja at a town hall meeting titled, “Agenda Setting for Sustainable Democratic Culture,’’ organised by the NGE, with support from the US Embassy in Nigeria, also said good governance cannot be entrenched in an atmosphere where the leaders are not held accountable, urging journalists to live up to their Constitutional roles.

While insisting that democracy is the best system of governance around the world, the NGE President cautioned that the Nigerian democracy should not be taken for granted but guided jealously with good governance and openness to citizens participation.

He warned that the recent coups around the West African sub-region is a warning to leaders across the country to ensure effective leadership that will promote the security and welfare of the masses.

"The media as a watchdog of society owes it as a duty to monitor governance and hold public office holders accountable to the people who elected them.

"Good governance is simply an essential framework which serves as a means of achieving wider goals , including security of life and property ( which is the primary goal of government , according to the 1999 constitution), prosperity and the general well-being of the citizenry.

"Journalists are part of the society and stand to also benefit from good governance if provided. So, it won't be misplaced priority if our profession devotes more time and energy to promoting good governance.

"On no account should Nigerians take its democracy for granted. In the last one year , there have been four coups in West Africa alone in which the military truncated democracy in those countries.

"A democratic government was toppled in Chad on April 20, 2021. We've had two coups in Mali in less than one year. On September 5, 2021, the military struck in Guinea and on January 24, 2022, the Burkina Faso military followed the dangerous trend and negative trend" he stated.

In her remarks, the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard charged the NGE and members of civil society organisations to live up to the task of promoting democracy as the country prepares for the 2023 general elections.

While underlining that Nigeria’s commitment to democracy and opposition to authoritarianism remains sound, the Ambassador noted that Nigerian leaders have been consistent in calling for the respect of presidential term limits, as well as being quick to condemn military coups in West Africa and the rest of the continent.

She, however, said that beyond public pledges supporting freedom and democracy, the editors and members of the civil society groups have a responsibility to delve deeper into the underlying factors that erode faith in democracy.

Tasking editors on their professional duty, Leonard explained that access to accurate and unbiased information was critical to any democracy in the world.

She urged editors to serve as catalysts to build a democracy that is accountable to its people, saying that when the citizens believe in democracy, good governance, and elections are restored, invariably; they would want to be a part of that system and would defend it.

The Managing Director, Daar Communications PLC, Tony Akiotu in his speech said the media played a critical role and the anti-colonial struggle and entrenchment of democracy.

He expressed dissatisfaction that the Nigerian society has not been fair to editors some of whom he said paid the supreme price in the struggle for restoration of democracy.

He said, "The Nigerian media has a vast history of performance and we cannot forget in a hurry the front-line role the media played in the anti-colonial struggles and the battle to upstage the military and enthrone democracy.

"Some of the Editors paid the supreme price during those struggles. I do not think the Nigerian society has been fair to the Nigerian Editors in the failure or negligence to acknowledge their roles and sacrifices."

Also speaking, a National Commissioner and chairman Information and Voter Education Committee of INEC, Barr. Festus Okoye charged the media to at all times uphold, defend and expand the frontiers of the sovereign rights of the people to free and unimpeded voting choice.

Also, the Senior Editor, Washington Examiner, Mr David Mark stressed that the freedom of the media was guaranteed in both the American and Nigerian constitutions.

Mark called on the Nigerian media to be professional in ensuring that news sources were jealously guarded.

He however commended the media for peaceful transition of power during the former President Goodluck Jonathan to the present administration.

No fewer than 50 media practitioners drawn from the North Central, participated at the town hall meeting.

The latest was the fourth in the series with the first three held in Lagos , Kano and Yola, under the NGE/US Embassy capacity building programme for editors in the Southwest, Northwest and Northeast zones .

Personalities such as Ene Obi, Country Director ActionAid, Prof. Abiodun Adeniyi, Head of Department, BAZE University, Mr Samson Itodo, Executive Director, YIAGA, and Comrade Owei Lakenfa, a Labour Writer, among others, were speakers at the event.

Abuja Body Of Comedians Election: Ghana-Must-Go Steps Down, Cites Unhealthy Rivalry

One of Abuja leading entertainers and a stand up comedian, Mr. Peter Ogbudu, popularly known as Ghana-Must-Go has declared that he is no more interested in vying for the presidency of Abuja Body of Comedians, ABC, attributing it to the unhealthy rivalry and bitterness that has characterised the race.

He accused some members of launching a campaign of calumny against one another instead of focusing on issues, stating that the atmosphere is not conducive enough for him to continue to pursue his ambition in the association at this time.

Ghana-Must-Go expressed disappointment that the contest which ought to have been a friendly race has been badly contaminated with bitterness and anger, stating that the do-or-die mentality of the Nigerian political contest has been introduced into the body.

He therefore thanked friends and colleagues who have shown faith and confidence in him with their support, stating that he would take a position on the candidate to support in coming days.

Earlier in a social media post, Ghana-Must-Go had said he has the experiential capacity and leadership sagacity to take ABC to greater heights.

According to him, the election being first of its kind in Abuja requires nothing short of the best, adding that ABC needs a vibrant, proactive, focus and results oriented leadership.

He had urged his colleagues to be decisive and vote based on the capacity of contestants to deliver and not because of personal relationship or someone’s influence.

He said, "Together let’s pick leaders that will pilot the affairs of ABC in the next 730 days.

"My name is PETER OGBUDU A.K.A Ghana Must Go asking my colleagues who know me and believe in my capacity to strategically take ABC to the next level that we all so desire, to Please vote for me as the next President Abuja Body Of Comedians in the forthcoming election as my experience over the years with both Public and Private sectors will serve as an edge during the period of service."

He listed President, Press Literary Art Debating Dramatic Society (Essi College Warri), Legal adviser, Social Variety Club (Essi College Warri), Stage Director, Minstrel Theatre Troop Auchi Poly, Stage Director, The Inspirators Auchi Poly, Edutainment Director, Municipal Youth Vanguard, Director Concept Development, Youth WASH, Former, State Coordinator Activista Nigeria, Consultant Partner, Action Aid. Fmr., Consultant Partner, Water Aid. Fmr., Consultant Partner, YAF. (Youth Alive Foundation), Director Peacetainment, Global Peace Foundation, Member, Friends of the Emirate, Ambassador, Peace Justice Human Right, MD/CEO 3B Globals, MD/CEO MileStone Photos among others as positions he has occupied and delivered a sterling performance.

Ghana-Must-Go enjoined his colleagues to join forces with him to make Abuja Body of Comedian a tourist attraction, in order to combine show and business to bring about financial stability and a stronger body.

With his decision to step down, it is not clear which of the candidates that would have his support in the race.

FUEL INSECURITY: Crime Escalates As Hoodlums invade Petrol Stations, Attack Motorists, Snatch Phones, Valuables in Abuja

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwC3HPrW2mM

Residents of Abuja the nation's capital are currently at the mercy of street urchins and hoodlums who invade fuel stations to attack motorists as petrol scarcity persists in the past one month.

Our correspondent gathered that the situation has forced motorists in desperate search for fuel to sleep in fuel queues.

When our correspondent visited the popular Ahmadu Bello near Banex junction Abuja, a scary long fuel queues persisted as residents resort to walking to their destinations due to unavailability of vehicles.

At one of the filling stations in the area, hoodlums were said to have in the wee hours of Wednesday launched an attack, wielding different types of dangerous weapons as they dispossessed motorists their belongings.

On further enquiries, one of the victims who simply gave his name as Friday wondered why the queues have persisted, indicting the federal government for what he called insensitivity on the plight of the masses.

He said the skyrocketing crime rate will continue as the long queues remain in the streets of Abuja.

Friday, a commercial driver fingered petrol hawkers popularly known as black marketers for the upsurge on crime rate. He alleged that some of them masquerade as petrol hawkers in the daytime while in the night they resort to crime.

He wants the government to look into their activities which according to him is economic sabotage.

"I am surprised that these guys have continued to make brisk businesses on the misery of the masses. They sell petrol as a highly exorbitant prices, going for as much as N1,000 per litre. How would people survive?

"I don't have any doubt that some of them are also the perpetrators of the criminal activities innocent motorists and residents trekking home are witnessing at nights. As innocent as they may appear in daytime, they are the same people going to fuel stations to dispossess motorists and residents of their belongings. Their activities must be monitored if not, we will be in for bigger troubles" he said.

A resident of Dutse, an outskirt of the nation's capital who gave her name as Chidimma John noted that she trekked from the popular Nicon junction to Jahi before she could see a vehicle going towards her axis on Tuesday.

The mother of one also said robbery has increased in the streets of Abuja where he said street urchins and criminals have resorted to taking advantage of the tense situation in the FCT to attack those walking home.

There were reports that a young man whose identity could not be ascertained as at the moment of this report was shot by yet-to-be-identified hoodlums while he was walking home on Monday at Kubwa junction roundabout due to lack of vehicle and valuables dispossessed from him.

As at 6pm on Wednesday, commuters were seen standing in large numbers at various bus stops in the FCT without vehicles in sight to convey them home.

Also not lost is the high price which they pay to get to their destinations as a result of the scarcity of fuel which has forced in increment in price of the commodity.

When contacted for a comment on the increasing crime rate in the FCT, spokesperson of the command, DSP Adah Josephine could not be reached for a comment.
