Scientists Say Bees Can Solve Basic Mathematics

A new study says honeybees can learn basic arithmetic.


According to a study published this week in Science Advances, scientists at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, have shown that honeybees can add and subtract if trained to do so. This discovery helps scientists understand the relationship between brain size and brain power, perhaps knocking birdbrain off the list of perceived slights. Honeybees and humans are separated by more than 400 million years of evolution, so the study’s authors say their findings suggest that an advanced understanding of numbers “may be more accessible to nonhuman animals than previously suspected.”
Many animals understand numbers at a basic level for essential tasks. But until now, only a few animals have demonstrated the ability to add and subtract. Honeybees join this short list that includes chimpanzees, African grey parrots and spiders.

The revelation that the tiny brain of a honeybee can understand basic mathematical operations has ramifications for the future development of artificial Intelligence, according to RMIT.

“This could give us insight on how to build more simple computers that can still process at a higher level … perhaps making computers more energy efficient,” said Scarlett R. Howard, the study’s lead author.

Training bees to do your homework won’t be an option, but here’s how the scientists helped them learn.

In this study, 14 free-flying honeybees were taught to recognize colors as “symbolic representations for addition and subtraction,” where blue is addition and yellow is subtraction.

Bees entered a Y-shaped maze. At the maze entrance, they viewed a sample set containing a specific number of blue or yellow shapes. Next, they flew through an opening and chose between two possible options: If the elements they first saw were blue, the bees would need to fly to the decision chamber that had one more than the sample they first saw (addition!). If the shapes were yellow, the bees would need to choose the option that contained one less shape than the sample (subtraction!).

In 100 trials, bees were rewarded with a drop of sugar water for the correct choice and punished for the wrong choice with a drop of quinine solution.

After training came the moment of truth in the testing phase: During tests that contained no reward or punishment, bees came up with the correct answers 63% to 72% of the time. That’s not random chance.

In this study, bees were tested on the number range of 1 to 5 for their ability to add and subtract. Howard notes it would be useful to examine how bees would perform on larger numbers, such as 2 plus 3, or moving on to test more complex operations.

The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for Akwa Ibom, Mike Igini, has just been redeployed to Bayelsa State and has been subsequently sworn in as the Resident Electoral Commissioner for the State.

The bodies, he said, were found five days ago, dumped in ditches around the city of Aba in southern Nigeria.

Kanu warned that the recent killings suggest Islamic terror groups active in Nigeria are singling out Igbo who identify as Jews or with the local Messianic community.

“The discovery five days ago of fresh human corpses inside a ditch along Aba-Port Harcourt Road in Aba, Abia State in Eastern Nigeria has raised fresh concerns and fears over intensified plans or policies to wipe off or exterminate the Judeo-Christian People of Eastern Nigeria; otherwise called ‘Igbo/Biafra-Jews’,” Kanu told Arutz Sheva.

“The intelligence unit of the Indigenous People of Biafra had five days ago (1st February 2019) discovered that fresh corpses of innocent citizens of Judeo-Christian identity killed in custody are routinely dumped inside various ditches across Abia State and possibly other parts of the Eastern Region of Nigeria.”

The claims were not independently verified, but Kanu cited reports from human rights organizations including Amnesty International and Intersociety: The International Society for Civil Liberites and the Rule of Law regarding massacres of the Igbo minority in 2016, 2017, and 2018.

However, during the arrival of President Buhari to Imo state, he was received by Governor Rochas Okoroacha and the Action Alliance Candidate, Uche Nwosu Ugumba in a warm and crowdy reception that threw the entire Imo state to a stand still.

Notably, Uche Ugwumba has remained the choice of Imolites, even after he was denied the APC ticket by Senator Hope Uzodinma.

The recent suspension Justice Onnoghen, the Chief Justice of Nigeria by the APC led administration under the leadership of President Buhari, has been condemned by Nigerians in Diaspora.

This came few days ago after the Peoples Democratic Party Candidate visited America to relate his mandate to International agencies ahead of the February elections.

The justification of the unconstitutional removal of Justice Onnoghen and the appointment of a new acting CJN by president Buhari was condemned by the spokesperson and Executive Assistant to the Director, Diaspora PDP Presidential Campaign Council, Engr Francis John, after the visit of Alh. ATIKU Abubakar to the United State of America, few days ago.

He stated that the ruling All Progressive Congress made the unconstitutional move because of it's undemocratic motive to perpetrate corrupt and unfair practices in the forthcoming general elections. He stressed that the President has acted outside the confide of the constitutional provisions of the law by suspending the CJN without following due democratic process.

Engr. Francis captured the moments to warn the ruling party to stay away from any frivolous attempts at rigging the 2019 elections. He stated that, Nigerians in diaspora and member of Atiku Diaspora Organization (ATIKUDO) are observing the elections and would do anything possible to ensure that the election is conducted successfully and void of malpractices and unpatriotic engagements.
