Culture / Re: Relationship Between Yoruba Language And Igala Language. by ALFADOS(m): 2:32pm On Aug 18, 2022 |
scholes0: Igala It looks like heavily modified archaic Yoruba.
Many of the words are the same. For those that are not exactly the same, I observed the following changes/modifications.
1) I noticed keenly that they have evolved to replace nasal vowel (Añ, Eñ, Iñ, Oñ, Uñ Etc) endings in Yoruba with their open oral vowel equivalents. Because Yoruba has 7 oral and 7 nasal vowels... but seems Igala has only oral ones.
* And also some consonant mutation in Igala , i.e (R to L), (L to N), (J to Bÿ), (S to R/L) etc.... Here are some RULES:
Rule A*: Nasal vowel ending words in Yoruba to open vowel ending in Igala. Middle diphthong eliminated when present Jeuñ (eat) - Jeñwu Igbiñ (snail) - Igbi Ohuñ (thing) - Eñwu Eyiñ (tooth) - Eñyi Ọkuñ (illipede) - Ọkọ Eguñ (ancestors) - Egwu Oguñ (medicine) - Ogwu Fuñfuñ (white) - Fufu Fañ (blow) - Fa Agañ (barren) - Aga Kañ (sour) - Ka Okañ (one) - Oka Oduñ (year) - Odo Agbañ (chin) - Agba Ouñ (he/she/it) - Oñwu Ofuñ (throat) - Ofa Oyañ (breats) - Eñya Idiñ (maggot) - Ide Ekuñ (leopard) - Eko Tituñ (new) - Tito
Rule B* Consonant mutation R to L and vice versa Kekere (small) - Kekele Irawo (star) - Ilawo Iri (dew/mist) - eli Olu (lord) - Onu Ro (cultivate) - Lo Olamide (name) - Uramide Iru (seed) - ilu Akere (toad) - Akele Ra (buy) - La Erira (ants) - Elila Ri (see) - Li Ora (fat) - Ula Oruñgbe (thirst) - Olugbe
Rule C* Consonant mutation S to R/L Ese (leg) - Ere Eso (fruit) - Ero Se (block) - Re Sø (throw) - Rø
Rule D* Consonant mutation S and SH to CH It seems like the “Sh” sound in absent in some Igala dialects , and they replace with a 'CH'... These dialects that lack the the SH sound seem to have become the standard for the whole of Igala.
Sheyi (done this) - Cheyi Oshu (moon) - Ochu Ishu (yam) - Uchu Ashe (authority) - Ache Isha (pot) - Ucha Shu (defecate) - Chu
Rule E* Consonant mutation J to BŸ Aja (dog) - Abya Eje (seven) - Ebye Ẹjɛ (blood) - Ẹbyɛ
Rule F* Consonant mutation W to GW just like in the South-Eastern Yorubaland dialects Ewa (beans) - Egwa Ku (die) - Kwu Gun (pound) - Gwu Ekun (cry) - Ekwu Oogun (sweat) - Uugwu Wɛ (wash/bath) - Gwɛ
Rule G*: Consonant mutation L to N Oluku (friend) - Onukwu Ile/Ale (land) - Ane Ale (night) - Ane Ala (dream) - Ona Ola (tomorrow) - Ona
Rule A* + B* Eriñ (four)- Ele Oruñ (neck) - Olu Iruñ (hair) - Ilo Aruñ (five) - Alu Oruñ (sun) - Olu Eruru (ashes) - Elulu
Rule A* + C* Esañ (nine) - Ela Suñ (sleep) - Lu
Rule A* +D* Eshiñshiñ (housefly) - Achichi
Rule A* + F* Egunguñ (bone) - Ogwugwu Iguñnu (vulture) - Ugwunu Oguñ (twenty) - Ogwu
Rule A* +G* Olokuñriñ (man) - Onokele Olobiñriń (woman) - Onobule
Rule B* + C* Sure (run/hasten) - Rule
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Other Minor differencess with irregular rules Bayii (like this) - Abayii Øbɛ (soup) - Øbø Owo (money) - Oko Wo (look) - Go Ijo (dance) - Ido Monamona (lightening) - Omamañya Oru (midnight) - Odu Eru (slave) -Adu Ehoro (rabbit) - Efolo Adiye (hen) - Ajuwe
And finally,False friend cognates Yo in Yoruba = Fully fed Yo in Igala = Plump / Fat
Du in Yoruba - To contest an object Du in Igala - To take an object
Oyuñ in Yoruba = Pregnancy Oyu in Igala = Fat
Ebo in Yoruba - Sacrifice Ebo in Igala - Deity
Edø in Yoruba = Liver Edø in Igala = Heart/Chest
Wewe in Yoruba = Pieces Uwewe in igala = Many
There are many countless words that are exactly the same in both languages and need no further elucidation, since we are focusing more on what has made the two languages different over time. That being said, there are many other words too that are very different... Hence the reason why Igala approximately shares only about 64% or so, word cognates with the General Yoruba we speak. The 40% that do not align between both is already enough to make inter-comprehension between both very hard... The biggest chunk of non Yoruboid words in Igala is from Idoma according to some research.
With this, I would give a Yoruba - give or take 6 months to master this language under complete exposure like going to live in Idah or Dekina.
Yoruba is Igala Pro Max. Once you master the grammatical rule of thumb in the formula required to convert from one dialect gloss to the other gloss ... you will master the language sharply. You too much, so interesting and educative 3 Likes 1 Share |

Profperfect: Dear Fam,
Please help me out(advice) on this , I am writing at this odd hour because I have lost my peace and I can't close my eyes and sleep .
My relationship has not been a rossy one at all, I have my faults (though am not a womanizer or a cheat) God bears me witness, but believe me, the girl I'm dating and almost settling down with after some years of dating has been hell, trust issues, disrespectful, someone who told me she can never respect or submit to me in her life, I have endured and endured her, she always overrides me. I can't talk or complian of her wrong doings , she will react badly, very insulting (countlessly insulted my father and mother but I have never ever retailiated, does care about what I feel or how I feel.
Should I talk of sex? I have never cheated on her for the past 6 years plus since we met (started dating) at a young age at uni and after uni, I respect her even in her absence, but she has mingled with different guys that has cost out relationship, in all these she claims she has done nothing wrong.
The main issue of all right now is that her boss, she once worked for who she was consciously sleeping with inside office once others are not around, always, hotel, even when they (claim) or go to conference or meetings together, knowing that he is a married man, called her yesterday to give her a job offer to return . This is a boss she served years back, even during uni he kept calling and always wanting to have her, during and after NYSC he kept calling her for him to have a bite, same boss she was pregnant for and aborted for him, though she hanged it on her boyfriend as of that time and the guy didn't know . She never told me all these her self, but I won't like to share here how I got to know.
The same man she has been avoiding for years, that she doesn't want to go back to sin or her past life, but just yesterday she even took excuse sneaked out of office and went to see him and accepted the offer, then came back home called me to tell me this and that and before I could talk she said she has accepted it, was shocked and trying to reason why she did that, she asked me if there was anything wrong in her decision, she began to yell at me on phone, as usual I kept mute and ended the call. Please would I be wrong if at this point I take a bow and leave now?
Please help me push it to the front page. She is a Nairalander too, she sees nothing wrong in the wrong things she does. Let the world hear my story and correct me if am wrong on taking the decision. Mr Man you just need deliverance kowe |

Prayfortheworld: My president!!
They said we don't have structure but we keep preaching the gospel. I was watching and interview online yesterday one man was asking northerners in Gombe state who they will vote for alot said they'll vote for obi when asked why they said they don't know him before but what they have read about him online gives them every reason to vote him.
Peter obi campaigners are like that of Yeye Bello of kogi state who campaigns meaningless and wasted the resources of kogi state on celebrities and co. Obi is just wasting his resources on social medial inshort
Lol those Tinubu followers keep neglecting the power of social media saying people that will vote are not on social media. Fools that doesn't know that awareness are created on social media alot of Nigerians don't know obi before but social media made them to know Peter Obi 85% of Nigerians have Android phones and are always online reading alot 85% of Nigerians have television 95% of Nigerians have radio you guys can keep on decieving yourself. Keep talking about obi we love it!!! Alot of people have not voted before but they're getting their voter's card and are going to vote because of obi(someone like me) Keep doubting the power of social media it will shock you guys. If you like don't market your own candidate keep attacking obi we love the popularity, and alot of nairalands are getting to like and know him because of you guys
South South and southeast is giving Obi buck votes you can go to the street and do the findings yourself if you doubt me! Obi for president!! Alot of my Yoruba friends are supporting him Alot of my Hausa friends are supporting him! And that gives me joy.. no room for tribalism a better Nigeria is what we want!!
PS: Igbos have more population in Nigeria than any other tribe just that all that matters to them is there business, they hardly pay attention to politics or voting if south East and South South come out in massive form and give obi their vote he will win this election without no sentiment. Atiku almost won last election because of Peter Obi not because people love atiku! And that's fact!
I'm not voting obi because his Igbo Give me Ambode and give me okorocha I'll pick Ambode a million times. Give me Kwankwaso and hope uzodimma I'll pick kwankwaso a million times! I hate tribalism I'll always do what's right and leave the rest for God!

My friend showed me the girl and I told him we were just friends I gave him the go ahead. But actually I was interested in the girl but I wanted to study her before making any move.
So Fastfoward, they dated for a month and broke up. He said he wasn't interested anymore and I could go for her actually. I'm now close to the girl. I had to let my friend know about it. He said he wasn't bothered but went behind my back and told my other friends what happened.
Now all of them think I'm a snake . I'm I wrong? No cases return back to the base, operation called office |

Islam for Muslims / Re: How Should We Return The Greetings From A Non-muslim by ALFADOS(m): 3:14pm On Jul 15, 2022 |
Lukgaf: Some non -muslims out of courtesy pay us a Tasleem. As a Muslim, how should we return it?
"Praise be to Allah.
It is not permissible firstly to initiate the greeting of salaam to a non-Muslim. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Do not initiate the greeting of salaam to a Jew or a Christian
(Narrated by Muslim, 2167). If one of them says As-Saam alaykum meaning, may death be upon you or it is not clear whether they have said salaam, then we should respond by saying Wa alaykum (and upon you).
It was reported that Ibn Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: When the Jews greet you, they say Al-saam alaykum (may death be upon you), so respond by saying alayk (and also upon you).
(Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5902; Muslim, 2461). If a non-Muslim greets us with the correct shari greeting (i.e., says Al-salaamu alaykum clearly), the scholars differed as to whether we have to return the greeting. The majority of scholars said that we do have to return the greeting, and this is the correct view.
Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: they differed as to whether it is obligatory to return the greeting. The majority said that it is obligatory and this is the correct view. A group of scholars said that it is not obligatory to return their greeting just as it is not obligatory to return the greeting of those who follow bidah. But the correct view is the first one. The difference is that we are commanded to forsake the followers of bidah by way of rebuke and to warn others about them, which is not the case with the Ahl al-Dhimmah (Jews and Christians).
(Zaad al-Maaad, 2/425, 426)
The Muslim who is returning the greeting should respond in the manner prescribed by shareeah, giving a similar or better greeting, because of the general meaning of the Aayah (interpretation of the meaning):
When you are greeted with a greeting, greet in return with what is better than it, or (at least) return it equally. [al-Nisa 4:86]
Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: if the person is certain that the Dhimmi (Jew or Christian) is clearly saying al-salaamu alaykum to him, and he has no doubts about that, should he say wa alayka al-salaam or shorten it to wa alayk? What is indicated by the evidence and principles of shareeah is that he should say wa alayka al-salaam, because this is more just, and Allaah commands us to be just and to treat others well this does not contradict any of the ahaadeeth on this topic at all, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) commanded us to shorten the greeting to wa alayk because of the reason mentioned above, which is that they deliberately used to say al-saam alaykum instead of al-salaam alaykum, as indicated in the hadeeth narrated by Aaishah (may Allaah be pleased with her). He said, Do you not see that I say wa alaykum when they say al-saam alaykum? Then he said, If the People of the Book greet you with salaam, say, Wa alaykum.
Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
and when they come to you, they greet you with a greeting wherewith Allaah greets you not, and say within themselves, Why would Allâh punish us not for what we say? [al-Mujaadilah 58:8]
If this reason is not there, and the Jew or Christian says, Salaam alaykum wa rahmat-Allaah, then it is only fair to respond in kind.
(Ahkaam Ahl al-Dhimmah, 1/425, 426)
The hadeeth of Aaishah was narrated by al-Bukhaari (5901) and Muslim (2165)
