Detectives in Ondo State have detained a primary school teacher, Alade Adebayo, for allegedly flogging to death a four-year-old female pupil Elizabeth Wanogha.

The deceased pupil was a student of a private primary school, Falaye Memorial Nursery and Primary School, located at Fanibi area in Akure metropolis.

The teacher, according to report, accused the deceased of being stubborn in the class. He was said to have beaten the girl to a state of coma. Cries from other pupils in the class reportedly attracted other teachers who rushed to the scene where they found that the girl had fainted.

She was said to have been rushed to a private hospital and was admitted but reportedly died later.

Police authorities, however, said that the pupil died two weeks after the beating by the suspect.

The father of the deceased, Mr Wanogha lodged a complaint at the Fanibi Police station, alleging that his daughter died as a result of the injuries sustained from the severe beating by her teacher. Following the complaint, the teacher was arrested for interrogation.

Contacted, the Police image maker, Wole Ogodo, confirmed that the teacher had been arrested but however said that people should not jump into conclusion that it was the beating which took place about two weeks earlier that led to the death of the pupil. He pointed out that the autopsy will determine the cause of the pupil's death.

Ogodo said that the suspect is being quizzed at the state Criminal Investigative Department, SCID and that investigation into the death of the pupil continues adding that the findings would be made public.

The father of the deceased pupil insisted that the teacher should be prosecuted for murder.

Mr Wanogho who lived at Adebowale street Fanibi vowed that the matter would be pursued to a logical conclusion to serve as deterrent to wicked teachers who vent their anger on innocent pupils put in their care.

He appealed to NGOs to take the matter up by ensuring that it was not swept under the carpet.

The proprietor of the school declined comment on the incident.

The inspector-general of police, Mohammed Abubakar, yesterday denied that he gave instructions that the meeting of G7 governors in Asokoro be disrupted by men of the Nigeria Police.

Abubakar however added, when he appeared before the House Committee on Police Affairs, that every state commissioner is responsible for happenings within his domain.

The IGP said, “I want to say, before I comment on that particular incident: there is nowhere, there is no time an instruction was given to any particular police officer, to disrupt a meeting of any particular organisation that is lawful.

“Neither myself nor through any of my aides have I directed any police officer to disrupt any meeting. “
“Remember as a police force, in every police force, there are certain responsibilities, the commissioner of police of a state has responsibilities of that particular state; so is the commissioner of FCT.”

He informed the committee that the divisional police officer (DPO) who allegedly disrupted the meeting could not have done so with any other intention than to provide security in the area.

“Anything that happens in FCT, the commissioner will be asked to explain why it happened, be it robbery, be it kidnapping, be it any act of illegality, and the point in question, where this meeting took place is a very key area for the police because most of these areas we do know that there are liaison offices for state governors. We are aware of the fact that they require high level of security to maintain that place, and I believe, without any contradiction, the DPO was not sent by anybody to do what he did. I believe the DPO was merely there to provide safety and security for whatever is taking place. “

The House had, on November 5, summoned the IGP “to ascertain the circumstances leading to the invasion of the Kano Governor’s Lodge by the men and officers of the Nigeria Police Force under the command of a divisional police officer (DPO) and report back to the House within two weeks” after approving a motion sponsored by Hon. Idris Mohammed Sani Kutigi (PDP, Niger) along with 60 others. The lawmakers had noted “with concern the action of the Nigeria Police Force, which violated the provision of the Constitution of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), specifically sections 40 and 308(1) (a) and (3).”

The DPO of Asokoro division, CSP Nnanna Amah, had led scores of policemen to disrupt a meeting of the G-7 governors at the Kano Governor’s Lodge in the Asokoro district of Abuja where five of the G-7 governors — Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso (Kano), Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Muazu Babangida Aliyu (Niger) — and the leadership of the new PDP were in a closed-door session. Apart from the governors, others at the meeting were chairman of the nPDP Alhaji Kawu Baraje, secretary Chief Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Alhalji Kashim Imam, senators Aisha Alassan, Danjuma Goje, Abdullahi Adamu, Bukola Saraki, former governor of Bayelsa State Chief Timipre Sylva, Sam Sam Jaja, former governor of Ekiti Segun Oni and the national vice-chairman of the PDP (northwest), Ambassador Ibrahim Kazaure.

The Federal Government on Tuesday banned civil servants from accepting chieftaincy titles.

The announcement is contained in a statement signed by Mr Tope Ajakaiye, Director (Communications), Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.

He said the ban also included other sundry awards until their retirement or disengagement from the civil service.
According to the statement, “It has come to the notice of Government that some civil servants are in the practice of soliciting for chieftaincy titles and sundry awards.

“Such act is inimical to the principles of anonymity, integrity and political neutrality which are the core values of the civil service.

Abuja — The United Nations High Commission for Refugees, UNHCR, yesterday in Abuja said Nigeria had more than 17,000 asylum-seekers in Chad, Cameroon and Niger.
Ms Angele Dikongue-Atangana, the UNHCR Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, told newsmen that the situation was due to the crisis in the country’s North-Eastern region.
She said about 36,000 persons had fled the north-eastern region of Nigeria in search of refuge in the neighbouring countries.
Dikongue-Atangana, quoting a research carried out by UNHCR and the Niger Authority, said 19,000 persons out of these were from Chad and Niger, and they have returned home.
“The UNHCR is working in collaboration with these countries to ensure that the refugee situation of the asylum-seekers is determined so as to guarantee their safety,” she said.
The UNHCR official added that insecurity continued to top the list of the challenges facing the commission as thousands of people were continuously rendered homeless.
“The world is facing its most serious refugee crisis for almost 20 years, as conflicts continue to force tens and hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes.
“War remains the dominant cause for displacement as over half the world’s refugees come from war-affected countries.
“The humanitarian situation in West-Africa has worsened notably due to insecurity and high unemployment rate, as well as drought,” she said.
Dikongue-Atangana said Nigeria was host to 1,865 refugees at the end of October 2013, with 1,465 pending asylum requests.
She said the largest refugee populations residing in the country were from Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo and Cote d’Ivoire .
“Among the 1,865 refugees in Nigeria, Cameroon has 865 persons, Congo 558 persons, Cote d’Ivoire 92, Chad 66 and Sudan 45, while others are 239 persons,” the UNHCR official said.
She also said 244 Malians had sought refuge in Nigeria since the beginning of the Malian crisis, making it the third largest asylum-seeking group in Nigeria.
Dikongue-Atangana explained that refugee population declined to less than half last year with “the invocation of the ceased circumstances cessation clause” for the Liberian refugees as at June 30, 2012.
She said the UNHCR had completed the durable solutions strategy for Liberians, adding that 1,284 of them had been locally integrated in Nigeria and 1,719 had returned to Liberia.
The Commissioner called for improved collaboration with the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally-Displaced Persons and other related bodies.
“The others are the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, and the Human Rights Commission for a continued upgrade of the well-being of refugees,” she said.

BENIN — CRISIS is brewing in the
leadership of Christian Association of
Nigeria, CAN, as members from the
Niger Delta, under the aegis of Global
Peace Relief Initiative, led by Prophet
Jones Erue, yesterday, faulted President of the association, Pastor Ayo
Oritsejafor, over what they described as
the unacceptable comments made
against them, following their attempts
to reconcile the G-7 governors with the
Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

In a statement by Prophet Erue, the
Niger Delta pastors described
Oritsejafor’s comment to the effect that
CAN was apolitical, as laughable,
accusing the CAN President of getting
involved in politics of calumny and name dropping. They said that they might not be as rich
as the CAN President or own a private
jet, but were men of integrity.

The statement said: “We are
disappointed that a leader could sit and
watch his two children fight while the
rest of us suffer only to come and
blackmail those who take their time to
seek solutions to the crisis.” They warned that no amount of blackmail or
intimidation would deter them from the
noble mission of rescuing the country
from imminent collapse. “It is surprising that Pst Ayo Oritsejafor,
the CAN president will handle issues of
immense gravity and national
importance hastily, with levity and
without discretion.

The first and easiest thing to know about a man is his name; it is a pity that the CAN president does
not know the name of the group of
clerics he is addressing nor their
affiliates. “Expecting him to have minimal
knowledge on what they stand for, will
be tantamount to exerting too much
pressure on his aging gray matter. We
are begging his aides and personal
assistants to do their job well and stop exposing this great man of God to
disrepute. “These eminent clerics and their
affiliate, Global Peace and Relief
Initiative have taken on a laudable
project of consulting across all interest
group and stakeholders concerning the
Nigerian project.

Nigeria is the only country we can call our own and as
fathers we cannot fold our hands and
watch intolerance and impunity destroy
our nation. “To place the records straight, we have
not made promises to any persons and
we have not used the name of CAN, we
have an affiliate whose mission and
vision best defines our activity.

We are noble men and do not rail accusation on authorities. “It is a pity that the handlers of the CAN
president have allowed miscreants, to
drag him into a show of shame,
misinformed the press and over
laboured the corporate affairs
commission with a futile search. “If we may ask, whose registration were
they authenticating? A group they
barely know its name?

This is a faith based Non Governmental Organisation,
NGO, with memberships spread across
the nation. Our main business is advocacy, conflict prevention/
resolution and facilitation of peace
projects whether individual, group,
organisation or government. We create
a good soil for developmental projects

own private jets but are men of
unquestionable character, dependable
leaders, and stewards of peace and
holders of reputable degrees. The leader of this group Prophet Jones Ode
Erue is a highly respected both in
political and religious circles.

initiatives by this great icon since 2002
till date. “When men lack purpose and relevance,
rather than encourage others with
vision and purpose they become
detractors of good and well meaning
Nigerians. “ We are disappointed that a
