Aso  Rock panics  as   pressure  mounts on Ribadu  to step down for  Buhari  today

The tempo of political activities ahead of this weekend’s presidential election heightened today.Impeccable soures told Newsdiaryonline that high level meetings have continued among opposition parties determined to give the PDP a good  challenge this weekend. The key issue  being thrashed out  how is to get the opposition parties  join forces and present a united front to  challenge President Goodluck Jonathan  and his PDP this  weekend

ACN,CPC and  ANPP have been involved in talks towards fielding  a united front.Newsdiaryonline has learnt that there  is  a resolve now to present General Muhammadu Buhari as the sole opposition candidate to challenge Jonathan. This talks have reached an advanced  stage. In fact it was  gathered this evening that intense pressure has been brought to bear on Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the presidential candidate of the  ACN , who is being encouraged to step down for Buhari

Newsdiaryonline sources revealed that the plot to field Buhari has created panic in some cirles in Aso Rock ,Nigeria’s presidential  villa. A reliable insider said a very grand counter- pressure is being mounted by the presidency  in  order to frustrate the emergence of  Buhari as the sole  opposition candidate. Aso Rock ‘s plot is to reach out to friends of presidential candidates who are being encouraged to persuade their presidential candidates not to step down for Buhari. A   source in the villa  told Newsdiaryonline that ` we are trying to ensure that Ribadu does not step down for Buhari’

Sources in the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN  however revealed  this evening that Aso Rock’s counter  pressure on Ribadu may have failed. In  fact, it was learnt that the pressure on Ribadu  from the party  as well as  other interested political groups has reached its peak  today. They are all urging Ribadu may step down for Buhari anytime  today or   as soon as the finer details of talks are finalized.

Newsdiaryonline learnt that the pressure on Ribadu  to step down is not coming from the ACN chieftains alone. Some chieftains of the Ciroma group including IBB an d others  are urging Ribadu to step down for Buhari.

``Look Iam going to urge Ribadu to step down  and Iam sure he will step down .If he doesn’t  agree and Buhari loses to Jonathan, you know people will blame Ribadu. So the best thing now is for him to step down for Buhari,’’ a soure volunteered this evening.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu ,former governor of Lagos state  is also known to be the chief advocate of  the move to have Ribadu step down from within the ACN.He is said to be eyeing the presidency in 2015 and wants  to be vice president to Buhari now.In fact, posters hinting at the Buhari/Tinubu alliance  are very visible at some strategic locations in Kaduna .Insiders said Tinubu has been doing all he can to ensure that the alliance between ACN and CPC materializes.

Now, it is evident to insiders that Tinubu may  have his way.Sources  have  said that  if Ribadu steps down, it is expected that Pastor Tunde Bakare will have to give way for a vice presidential candidate from the ACN to run with Buhari. That is how Tinubu may clinch the ticket and ensure a muslim –muslim ticket akin to the Abiola/Kingibe ticket during to the June 12 ,1993 presidential race.ACN ‘s control of the South west under Tinubu’s leadership and Buhari’s  popularity among the Northern masses are the key factors making the alliance very attractive, insiders insist.Whether it will be enough to stop Jonathan and PDP from clinching the presidency once again remains to be seen.

It was learnt that Ibrahim Shekarau   of ANPP has also been under intense pressure to step down as well.A new group has  also for some months been working underground to have a single northern candidate against Jonathan. It was not immediately clear when Shekarau will step down,if at all.

Nuhu Ribadu stands down

The ACN candidate, Nuhu Ribadu has bowed out of the Presidential race in favour of the CPC candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd)

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) candidate, Nuhu Ribadu has bowed out of the Presidential race in favour of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd).

Sources have told Daily Times that the deal which has just been struck between the ACN and the CPC would see Mr. Nuhu Ribadu stepping down for General Muhammadu Buhari in Saturday's Presidential Election.

The two parties gained a sizeable representation in the National Assembly after last Saturday's election which reduced the dominance of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). However officials of both parties feel that an alliance of both parties would be very welcome.

CultureRe: Ilaje People(the Only Oil Producing Tribe In Yoruba Land):let Us Meet Here! by AljUche: 10:44pm On Apr 12, 2011
The Ilajes are a distinguished, distinct linguistic group of the Yoruba stalk made up of four geo-political entities namely Ugbo, Mahin, Etikan and Aheri.

They were said to have left ILE-IFE their original ancestral home/settlement in the 10th century. They mainly occupy the Atlantic coastline of Ondo State of Nigeria while a large population of them settles on land in the hinterland. The area they occupy today remains the Ondo State of Nigeria only outlet to the sea.

ILAJELAND is bounded by the Ijebus to the West, the Ikale to the North, the Itsekiri to the East. The APOI and Arogbo Ijaw to the North East, while the Atlantic ocean formed the southern boundary. No doubt, the Ilajes are one of the most dynamic and enterprising people in Nigeria. Their aquatic skill, coupled with their high adaptational ability enable them to conquer their hash geographical environment and turn it to a big advantage. Consequently, they were able to build large communities like Ugbonla, Aiyetoro, Zion PePe and Orioke. Aiyetoro for example in it's hey-days had the highest per capital income in the whole of Africa and attracted visitors, tourists and researchers from all over the world especially Europe, Canada, and America.

Apart from petroleum which is largely found in the area for which Ondo State today is recognized as an oil producing State. Other mineral raw materials that are abundantly available in Ilajeland include Glass Sand, Salt, Tar Sand, Quartz and Clay while Agro raw materials include fish, poultry, maize, Palm oil vegetables, Timber, Rafia, Poultry Okro, Cocoyam, Banana, Cassava, and Piggery.

The natural environment of Ilajeland is particularly suitable for the development of large scale Rice plantation and Salt industry.

The occupational activities of the Ilajes include fishing, canoe making, lumbering net making, mat making, Launch building, farming and trading.

Igbokoda, the Ilaje local government headquarters is fast becoming an international trade center as it popular market attracts traders not only from other part of Nigeria, but, also from other African countries especially Togo Benin, Ghana, Cameroon and Gabon.

The closeness of Ilajeland to Lagos which is only about 75 kilometers and its aquatic environment present the area as a suitable environment for Tourism development. It is hoped that the Ondo State Government and indeed the Federal Government of Nigeria will realize the importance of the pleasant natural geographical condition of the area and develop it into a world class Tourist Attraction/Center.

In the past the entire area suffered serious neglect and marginalization in the hand of government. However, it appears that the Ondo State Government has come to realize the importance of Ilajeland not only because it is her only outlet to the sea but also because it is her economic power House. The State is now constructing a net work of road linking the area with the hinterland and has promised to provide basic social amenities including electricity and drinkable pipe bone water.

The Highlight of the Ondo State recent development effort or project in the area is the acquisition of about 200 hectares of land to be developed and built as a satellite town for the people displayed from their homes in towns and villages on the Atlantic Coastline as a result of petroleum drilling and exploratory activities.
No doubt, there is a big future for the area especially with the Olokola Development project by Ondo and Ogun State Governments.

The Ondo State Government and indeed the Federal Government of Nigeria should see or recognize ILAJELAND as an important visible economic asset and focus invest and embark on the speedy development of the area.

PoliticsJonathan In Secret Meeting With Tinubu, Others by AljUche(op): 3:10am On Apr 12, 2011
President Goodluck Jonathan jetted to Lagos last night as part of his last-minute moves to persuade the teeming South-West voters to support his presidential ambition in this Saturday’s presidential poll. LEADERSHIP gathered last night that Jonathan rushed to Lagos after visiting the Suleja bomb blast victims. The president was said to have met with some influential South-West political and youth leaders.

According to a source at the meeting last night, “We see President Goodluck Jonathan as a sincere and honest person. Those who thought he was merely bluffing when he said nobody should rig for him must be convinced now that we have a president who believes in fair play and transparency.
“We now believe that Nigeria’s journey to greatness has begun. And, come Saturday, we shall vote for Jonathan. He is leading a new Nigeria where merit is the name of the game.”
It was also gathered that very senior intelligence officials are meeting with the top hierarchy of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) to work out an understanding with the party for the presidential election.
Members of a prominent family involved in movies and show business have also been meeting with the top hierarchy of the ACN on the same purpose.
At the meeting with the youth group, he called on them to lead the fight for the election of credible leaders that would lead the country out of the woods.
The president also asked them to be at the vanguard of the quest to clean up the polity and enthrone responsive leadership in the country.
“You should be the vanguard to impress on the people that we must no longer be slaves to money politics,” President Jonathan said, admonishing them to persuade their friends not to sell their conscience.
He asked the leaders of over 70 youth groups that attended the consultative meeting to be part of the ongoing effort to rebuild Nigeria and set it on the path of renewal by guiding other Nigerians to make the right choices in the general elections.
“We must elect people who can take us forward,” he said.
The president reminded the youth leaders that, only a while ago, the country was at par with the Asian Tigers and needed to catch up fast with the rest of the developed world.
He said: “We must elect leaders who will take us there, sustain good governance, transform Nigeria, and set the stage for the future.”
President Jonathan, who thanked the youth leaders for coming at short notice, reiterated his pledge to create an environment that would improve the lot of young people.
“Our commitment is to work with the youth to ensure that Nigerians are proud everywhere,” he said, adding that last Saturday’s election was a manifestation of the possibility that Nigerians could do things right.
“We will surely get it right,” he said even as he reassured them of his full commitment to end youth unemployment and transform the country.
In their responses, the youth leaders praised the president for his humility and his campaign strategy that emphasised wide consultations with major stakeholders in the polity.
“We are humbled by your consultation with us and could only wish you well in your effort to turn our country around,” said Francis Abayomi, co-ordinator, South-West Think-Thank on Democratic Governance.
Also speaking, Comrade Ibuchukwu Ezike, executive director of the Civil Liberties Organisation, commended President Jonathan for his efforts to ensure that credible elections hold but asked the president to investigate the allegation of underage voting in some parts of the country.
President Jonathan, who was accompanied by his chief of staff, Chief Mike Ogiadomhe, and some senior aides thanked the youth leaders for their contributions and promised to continue to work with them in the task of rebuilding and transforming the country.
President Jonathan visited victims of last Friday’s Suleja, Niger State, bomb blast at the Gwagwalada Specialist hospital yesterday and vowed that those behind the dastardly act would be brought to book.
He said that, already, various security agencies had intensified efforts to track down all those involved in the unfortunate incident which claimed the lives of 13 Nigerians.
“Having inspected this hospital, I have seen these young people who are serving their nation and got cut off in this dastardly act by some anti-social elements, one feels sad.
“These are young people at the prime of their life, the hope and future of Nigeria. For anybody to target the youth, he is targeting the country and he does not mean well for the nation.
“Well, in all societies we have such people. But as a government we will make sure that we look out for them. God willing, we will get them, if not all, some of them and they will face the law.’’
The president pledged that government would settle all medical expenses of the victims as well as assist the families of those that lost their lives to the incident.

ChinenyeN:
Interesting topic, and I've learned quite a bit from it, but with all said and done, the subject begs the question (at least in my mind) what in the world do people expect the Igbo to do about it? Let's face the issue squarely. What would one expect the Igbo to do about this bondage, backwardness, political irrelevance, and then ask oneself, is it even possible with the Igbo?
thank you; very good question

what people should do is this
Alj Uche:
No onlytruth do not get me wrong

APGA can still be a very strong force to recon with and ofcourse it is an igbo party; you just have to give them time to grow

what dem-people is saying is also true, APGA has to make inroads to other states apart from the SE maybe even SW or North. But first of all there is no strong politician in the east right now that can pull such crowd of people

we need to put 1 of our own in the fedral level

make allies with the SS and SW

make people know him and love him

THEN, we can talk about him being the president and if no political party like him

he can easlly move to APGA bring momentum of people who are powerful with him from the north and west

NO group in Nigeria whats to put us in chain and I certainly do not what to do that

our interest is best achieved this way
I do not believe APGA should be scrape, no point for that

since the nature of Ndigbo is that we move about (which is an advantage) then i believe the more party we are in the better the chances of us getting to the top in few years time

If the west love ACN then more igbos should be in ACN for the interest of our people in the WEST and also more shot at the presidential race

If the north love CPC then leave the igbos in there so as to protect our interest up north and more shot at the presidential race

If the east love APGA and ACCORD; let it keep running in the nearest future they will win seats in the whole east

You see onlytruth, the more diverse we are the more options we have for ourselves and that is one of the reasons i did not support jonathan's endorsement by ohaneze

We should keep our options open and wide always so other political groups would not know our decision to the last moment

I love as we have no king, thus we are more diverse and have different ideas on ground

different people with different ideas can go to different political groups so long as the interest of our people is served then i think we should be ok

and this i believe is possible
