The fishery industry in Nigeria is near dead. Its sad that most commercial fishing in Nigeria is handled by foreigners. Their costs or market prices are higher than the imported ones not counting the inconsistency in supplies. The average Nigerian needs not be exploited by these foreigners and their high costs. Think about this. Besides importing from another country at a cheaper rate does not mean you still can't export to other countries still.

All the same, good observation above. Thanks.

If some English words should not be used, why were they invented in the first place, and why are they in the English dictionary? Don‘t mind them, uncle Pato. Keep it on; we‘re with you!

Lol!

The truth is that in English, as in any other language, there are always different words which gives the same meaning. But there is always a rule of usage. The mood, the subject under discussion and the circumstance determine which word is used. In most cases when you find that in a discussion or thesis you have used one word too often, you can switch to another word with the same meaning to avoid being monotonous.

But our oga Pato already switches before he starts making his statements! grin cheesy wink

I can't believe some people think it is "ok" to speak like this. That he entertains us is excellent. But what is the point in striving hard to "impress" instead of "express"?

In secondary school those days we had some people who crammed the dictionary. But the problem was that there are over a 200,000 english words there but the english language only requires about 2500 words for 95% of our day to day communication. Such people who have crammed the dictionary find that they have wasted their time doing so, and they want to prove that they have "worked hard". So, they use unnecessary words just to feel "hype" with themselves and to impress people.

But this people soon grow up and leave this childish act. Only that it appears some people never grow up! Our dear honourable seems to fall in the latter category.

This man has been abroad several times. He NEVER speaks like this outside when he is in the USA or UK, because he KNOWS he will make a fool of himself. Ask those who know him personally.

He speaks very good english when he needs to; so what is the point of all these balderdash?

He is a good man, yes! He is one of the few politicians with a vision, yes! He is loved by his people for his exemplary vision, yes!

But he needs to grow up with his grammar!!

What sense? Ehn!

Honestly, will you send this man to represent Nigeria in any international congress? To bring shame and disgrace to us? Only illiterates celebrate this man and by illiterates I mean people who have gone to school and still don't know what English is all about.

"The crisis in Jos is because there is no love between the people and that is because we don't understand the true meaning of love. Love is a magnanimous feeling of overwhelming enthusiasm in the metabolisms of individualistic characters that combines them in an ecstatic union of disposable agreements throughout the incalculable processes of their inter-human polarities"

This statement was discussed for one week in havard; conclusion was that Nigeria is finished if such a man who makes such statements is a law maker.

I weep for those who think this is right for our ailing polity. "HISS"

I have read so much opinions about the reasons for his death. Let me just add mine here:

He was not killed for "negotiating" on behalf of BH.

He was not killed for narrating anything at all to OBJ.

He was killed because BH wants the government to know that whoever they try to use to get through to them will be killed, simple!

I don't think this man invited OBJ to his home. It was OBJ's initiative to go there on his own, and so doing caused the death of this man.

Alhaji Babakura Fugu brother-in-in-law of Mohammed Yusssuf; the slain leader of the Boko Haram sect has been assassinated. Gunmen suspected to be angry members of the religious sect killed 48-year-old man.

Eyewitnesses allege that the gunmen, who used their long flowing gowns to conceal AK47 riffles, attacked the Babakura Fugu, as he approached from his house, at about 1.30 pm.

Recall that Babakura Fugu had received former president Olusegun Obasanjo in his family home located in Railway Quarters in Borno state,Thursday, and recounted the family`s ordeal.

Politics / Honourable Obaihiagbon On 6 Years Single Term Proposal! by allanohize(m): 10:56am On Aug 13, 2011
LWKMD

Q - What is your take on the recent single tenure of office proposal for the president and governors by President Goodluck Jonathan?
A - Let me asseverate that President Jonathan is seised of all the privileges to bounce his political thoughts within the field of play and we have a bounden duty to interrogate his presidential vision without recourse to vituperative and ad hominem exegesis.

Having made the above point, let me posit prestissimo that the single tenure proposal for executive suzerains and major domos as an Aladdin lamp out of our vaudeville of political phantasmagoria, economic quagmire and social miasma amongst others, presumptuously takes for granted that it is not the same prebendal, narcissistic and namby-pamby Nigerian political class that would operationalise same.

Yes, it has been argued that it has the potency for blunting the edges of acidic acrimony and political gbogbonshe. Yes, the point has been made that it can engender a focused executive biceps; yes, we are being told that it would entrench the principles of rotation and what have you. But I submit with all sense of responsibility that this new fangled single tenure prescription is, at best, a Frankenstein monster and an execrable political hobgoblin that must be put back in the bottle.

Politics / Re: 2 Year Rents Banned In Lagos, Landlords To Be Jailed For 3 Years. by allanohize(m): 7:24pm On Aug 07, 2011
With all due respect to everyone here on nairaland, no insults intended, I am truly ashamed at the level to which some of my brothers and sisters here react to news like these. The economic situation in Nigeria has made us stop reasoning "straight". Instead, we try to adjust to hardships and in some cases such as this one, we even defend those hardships and make excuses for them.

Back to the issue on ground, Nigeria is about the only country in the world where landlords want to collect 2 years rent in advance. I live in Brazil at the moment, here all you need is to pay 2 or 3 months deposit, move into the apartment and continue paying your rent from the next month. When you are due to leave the apartment, your deposit will be refunded to you or you can use it for the last 2 or 3 months of your stay in the house.

But that is Brazil, abi?

Go to Europe, US, Asia, even other parts of Africa, build a house and demand for 2 years rent. You would likely be prosecuted and jailed. Investments in real estate are to be recouped in 10 to 20 years, but in Nigeria we want to make it in 3 years!

In Nigeria, we have learnt to take undue advantage of people for the sake of money. It is evident everywhere. Landlords build shabby houses in 2 months and are in a rush to rent it out. No good drainage, no good toilets, just put a roof, and rent it out!!

I once stayed in a hotel at Kirikiri (on Dillion street), it was an eyesore. The rugs covering the staircase had not been changed for over 40 years it seemed!! Neither had the curtains in the rooms! But they were collecting money from people with the "if-you-don't-like-it-you-can-go-elsewhere" attitude!

Quality control is what we need in Nigeria! In every sector!

As it is done in other countries. All current and intending landlords must register their houses with the state government who would send a team (development control department) to inspect the house and certify it fit for Nigerian citizens to live in. At this point a one-year licence is given to the landlord to enable him rent the house out. Renewable every year. Any landlord without such a permit will be prosecuted and may lose his house if convicted. This will make the landlords wake up to their responsibilities.

In Nigeria, the law that would work best is this: Tenants would initially pay one-year rent from which 6-months rent is retained as deposit. Rents would be paid on 6 month basis beginning from 6 months after the rent was paid. Meaning that at any point in time tenants have a 6-month deposit. At the end of your tenancy, this deposit would be refunded or you can use it up for the last 6 months of your stay. But as a tenant you must pack out within 2 weeks of discontinuing your rent.

For Fashola, I advise that he puts up strict monitoring policies as well as other measures to protect landlords from "court-loving" tenants just as he is trying to protect tenants from "2-year rent loving" landlords.

E go better sha!

What is the best thing that happened to you this year? Do not respond until you read this!!!

There is no end, it seems, to the list of surprises springing out from Brazil. This wonderful country has given international investors all the right reasons to move their businesses to Brazil. Now, Brazil gives you all the right reasons to own a holiday home here! http://www.cheaphomesbrazil.com

“How to Buy Cheap Homes in Brazil”
captures all these reasons and has, in 3 months, become the fastest selling book in the world.

No matter what your budget is, in Brazil, there is a home for you to buy or acquire! And with the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Olympics scheduled for Brazil, international real estate analysts are already predicting a 155% appreciation in value within the next 3 years in some areas.

But how did this all start?

Early in 2011, a young resident of Rio de Janeiro wrote a book documenting his observations about the real estate industry in Brazil. Over 500 of the industry’s top stakeholders reviewed the book and it became an instant hit. As the positive reviews grew, so did the popularity of the book; and soon everybody was talking about it! Even Brazilians themselves did not know such amazing opportunities were around them, everywhere! Now the whole world is talking about the book!

How did the book become a best-seller?

1. Over 100,000 people read the book within the first three months of its publication and over 96% of these people gave positive reviews.

2. The book is about Brazil, and anything about Brazil is big news today! Most importantly, the book highlights Brazil’s rising profile as a world power with emphasis on what may seem the most outstanding opportunities to the whole world today. This new profile and its features have been endorsed by presidents, Fortune 500 companies as well as other notable private and international bodies like Goldman Sachs and the Asian Tigers.

3. The book holds a big secret that, at the moment, only a few people know.

4. The book is credited to have increased tourism into Brazil by 20% this year alone! That’s an additional one million people visiting Brazil directly or indirectly as a result of the revelations in this book.

5. It’s a very simple book with a very strong message.

6. The world was waiting for information like this! As most countries were trying to recover fully from the effects of the last global recession, this was exactly what was needed to change the fortunes of many who seek strong opportunities! The book not only provided this and much more, it also helped governments of many countries identify where some of their true strengths lay. No wonder the book gathered some endorsements from some of these quarters!

It's all there for you to download at http://www.cheaphomesbrazil.com

NB (poster's own notes)

Brazil is the world's largest producer of wood, cement, paint, bitumen and so many other building materials. I discovered this was one of the major reasons why houses are cheap to buy. Secondly, most houses here were built many years ago, as old as 60 years ago, some of them. They have been passed from generation to generation and present owners feel they have gotten much value over the years. However, rentals can be very expensive which makes the industry good. Buy low, rent high! Plus, with a property in Brazil, you are entitled to permanent visas renewable every 5 years. Most international buyers only have to contract the management of their properties out to established agencies in Brazil and they remain in their countries receiving their rents! Read the book, it's worth it.

Some are drug pusher who can't go into a certain country or the other, i don't want to mention names in here but we all know some of them. I can authoritatively say it that the achievement recorded so far in our music industry is solely the effort of this yahoo boiz, Government never backed the music industry with one fund or the other but it's this boiz that got the monies either legitimately or whichever way they got and backed a lot of people who got talent on the street, they bought Studios in their homes, buy the best equipment there is that is being used in the advance world and brought it home that is why we recorded the little achievement we are boasting of so far in our music industry, Na play Maintain dey holla yahoozee or Kelly Handsome dey shut Maga his don pay, dis are real life experience of soe peolpe turn into music, with that a lot of boyz were able to escape poverty and were made into musician, not that I'm supporting it but what about our Senators/Rep/ Governors/Ex president/ with our confidential letter headed paper giving It out to fraudsters to dupe Foreign investors? how can this stop when those at the top are abetting it, bank Executives deals with this boys as well, so what do we do?

It is true, some people may have put the ill-gotten money to good use in one form or the other but, as you pointed out, it doesn't justify it. On the other side of the divide, thousands of other yahoozee boys have used their own loot to destroy a lot more lives. Hundreds of our youths are in jail today because they copied yahooozee boys. Many of our kids today have blocked their brains with dreams of "hammering" instead of concentrating on their studies. Yahoo boys now command more respect and earn more chieftaincy titles than your traditional suit-and-tie guy.

People who are not too smart to make it the yahoo way have turned to other criminal activities by way of the encouragement they got from the yahoo lords. Like hired assassinations, armed robbery, looting and thuggery. Parents have carried such acts to work places as well. There was a time the Army printed about 40,000 recruitment forms but over 500,000 fake forms were all over the market. The perpetrators must have been full grown adults with kids of their own.

This my country dey tire me sef! I just feel the brilliance of these boys can really do wonders for us as a country if put to more legitimate uses. But they need encouragement and this is not forth coming from the political class.

Thanks bro for your comment joo! One day e go better!

On a serious note, I have tried several times to talk some people I know out of it, but from the responses here so far, your guess is as good as mine why most of these guys will never stop.

I heard of a man in Festac Town who rented a whole duplex and equipped it with over 30 computers and employed "workers" to "configure" the world for him. In my opinion, he must have spent over N1.5m setting this up, couldn't he have gone into a better business with this kind of money?

I receive tons of emails from fraudsters every month. And I am sure they send this same email to hundreds of thousands of people every time. With this ability to reach out to these number of people, would it not be easier to offer genuine products for genuine sales.

I joined an affiliate network some years ago to promote their products online. I never did anything with my membership until I read some people's success stories. Then, I purchased a thousand telephone numbers and sent SMS to all of them. At least 83 people purchased what I advertised to them and from each sale I made $22. Do the mathematics yourself. If these Yahoo guys can reach out to 200,000 people with good and legitimate offers where they will earn commissions, wouldn't it be more honourable and better?

Just wondering. undecided undecided undecided

My brothers and sisters on NL,

I am beginning to take more interest in this family section, since, at the end it's all about family values. And if we get it right from the family, things may begin to move well in the society.

Family Question One (FQ1) is:

What will you do if you discover that your child is indulging in yahoo-yahoo?

Many parents, especially in Lagos, find themselves in this dilemma. Your reactions, comments and suggestions are most welcomed.
Family / Re: Is It True That Ladies From Broken Homes Are Not A Good Wife Material? by allanohize(m): 3:22am On Jun 29, 2011
In fact on the contrary, ladies from broken homes have a better tendency to make better wives especially in Nigeria. Just like children from poor homes have a better tendency to be good financial managers.

They have suffered the pains of not being with both their parents. They have seen their friends from stable homes. They lived their lives wishing to have stable homes. They learnt the hard way what stable homes can provide to the psyche of children. They swore that they would do everything possible not to repeat the mistakes of their parents.

Children from stable homes are more likely to take too many things for granted. They are more likely to grow up not understanding the amount of sacrifice needed to keep a home together. Most people commenting so far are only doing so because in Nigeria, we have been conditioned to believe in the superstitions of ancient times. In Europe, America and other developed countries where divorce is very common, ask this same question and you will see a different class of opinions from respondents.

At the end of the day, it boils down to the individual and not the background of the individual per se! Too many things will come to play.

Arsenal is better than Man U!

Does this argument hold any sense? Depending on what your bias is, you can always make a case either for or against the above statement.

Eba is sweeter than amala! Depending on what you prefer, you can argue for or against.

Children whose parents did not beat them can never make good fathers! What nonsense! My parents never, ever, beat me, I am 34 presently with 4 kids, and I can boast of being one of the best Nigerian dads ever to pass through this world.

Some of my uncles and aunts once told me that Edo girls are all prostitutes and never make good wives! I married from Edo state, and she is from a double broken home, she did not even know her father until she was 21 years old, yet she remains a blessing and an angel to me. I am from not from Edo state.

I read some posts above and people were saying, "the girl is likely to follow her mother's footsteps and break her own home". For your information, men cause 85% of broken homes, either directly or indirectly. The girl's mother might have been an angel which her father never appreciated due to, say, drunkenness, womanising, gambling and all what not. Does it mean that her mother, having divorced the father for such irresponsible behaviours after enduring it for many years, will not be able to bring her children up properly to be good, godly and fit for marriage? No!

Guys, read my earlier post on this issue, there are things you look out for in a lady you intend to marry, and her coming from a broken home or not is certainly not one of them.

Yoruba girls are dirty, so don't marry them.
Ibo girls will finish your money, so don't marry them.
Calabar and Edo girls are promiscous, so don't marry them.
Ebira and igala girls will use juju on you so don't marry them.
Hausa girls will train their children to be bokoharamists so don't marry them.
Port harcourt girls will kill you to inherit your property, so don't marry them.
etc etc etc!!

Absolute nonsense, all these statements. Whatever characteristics you see in any lady from one tribe, you will get thousands from another tribe with such habits as well.

For as many girls who come from broken homes that make bad wives, you will see just as many from stable homes who are bad too!

End of discussion!

No, its not true, at least not completely.

What are the reasons for the girl's broken home?

Who did the girl live with after the break up?

What is the present lifestyle of the parent she lived with?

Regarding your relationship with the girl, what are the parent's opinions?

Does the girl confidently take decisions or does she always have to call either of her parents for advice?

Is the girl rational enough for you?

If she has siblings, what is their relationship with her like?

Has she had other relationships before? If yes, find out what led to the break up.

These are a few guide questions to help you take a decision about marrying such a girl.

Remember, there are female devils who come from a stable home, so the stability or otherwise of the home she comes from should not be the issue here.

I have some questions:

1. Did the woman's husband run away after the first child or waited until the seventh?

2. Which hospital was the woman using for her child delivery? The hospital officials didn't raise alarm after 2 kids in 2 months? Even if she delivered all at home, no friends or family members raised alarm over the "hyper-activeness" or over fertility of this woman? I expected to see a topic on NL which reads, "Woman delivers 2 kids in one year" or something close to that; but 7 kids? Don't insult our intelligence please.

3. At whatever point the husband took to his heels, why didn't he raise alarm? Surely, family members would have wanted to know why a man would abandon his wife just after child birth!

4.  DNA tests are conducted in at least 3 hospitals in Nigeria. South Africa? Well may be they feel it would be more reliable.

5.  At the end of this whole cock-and-bull story when the truth comes out, will Nigerians be willing to deter this kind of behaviour by meting out a big punishment to this woman? Like death sentence or life in prison?

Sometimes, I wish I come from Cotonou!

The Prediction that failed in South Africa 2010 World Cup?

Fact 1. Brazil won the World Cup in 1994. Before that they had also won it in 1970. Add these two years and you get 3964 (1994+1970 = 3964).

Fact 2. Argentina won its last World Cup in 1986. Before that they had also won it in 1978. Add these two years and you get 3964 (1986+1978 = 3964).

Fact 3. Germany won its last World Cup in 1990. Before that they had also won it in 1974. Add these two years and you get 3964 (1990+1974 = 3964).

Fact 4. Brazil also won its World Cup in 2002. Before that they had also won it in 1962. Add these two years and you get 3964 (2002+1962 = 3964).

Conclusion = This year is 2010 & 3964 -2010 = 1954. So, country that won in 1954 will win this world cup (2010+1954 = 3964). The country that won in 1954 was Germany.

Hence, by this logic of numerology, this World Cup will go to Germany.

Oops! Germany was strong but couldn't get to the finals of the 2010 world cup! Are there other mathematical predictors out there?

If the same formula is applied to 2014, then the eventual winners of the 2014 World Cup would be Uruguay! But are they ready?

@poster.
You re actually the brainwashed dimwit.Maybe reading too many silly conspiracy theories. so Abdul Mutallab`s father who claimed to have warned US embassy over his son`s suspicious fundamentalist behaviours was also part of the conspiracy? Abeg carry your crap go elsewhere.

He "claimed" to have warned the US Embassy! Do you have details of that claim? The man was invited to answer questions concerning his son at the time the poor boy was being "groomed" and he seized the opportunity to distance himself from his son's activities. All these were part of the sweet "build" up to a fantastic story fit enough for dumb heads like you!

Please, baba! Learn to think first before opening your mouth on intellectual issues! You are just a kid on these matters, join your mates on the streets of lagos playing with car tyres in the rain! When you grow up and have been well groomed by mama, then may be we can hear you talk! Rubbish!

I just can't believe how some people think. Read my post carefully, I repeat: I am not saying he was killed and I am not saying he was not! All I am saying is that the hurried operation and hurried burial without any "true" photos so far, makes it difficult to believe this story.

Saddam was executed! He was shown being hanged! After that his body was photographed. Now, would you just have believed that Saddam was executed if there were no coverage or pictures.

We sometimes rush to believe stories just because they were told by "americans".

I have watched some films about ancient battles and events leading to them, where the film makers re-crafted those events to suit the message the films want to pass to the public. For example: In a particular movie, a man was in his bedroom discussing with his wife. The discussion lasted many minutes but before both of them could finish the discussion, the house was bombed and they both died. In this scenario, the film could just have shown depicted how they were together in the house before the bombing. But, the film went further to depict the discussion they had in full details! How did the movie makers get those details of the discussion? They only want to use that to change how the viewers see that event!

A case in point remains the depiction of the Vietnam war. American version is so full of bravery and valour of their soldiers in the face of battle while the Vietnamese version showed the cowardice of the american soldiers! Which version do we believe?

We need to open our minds to reason and explore all possibilities not just believing craps being fed to us!

For the sarcastic comments above, I only hope the people who made those comments would not pass their disease to their children because the future of Nigeria can only be brighter if we have people who think with their heads and not with their large intestines like the offsprings of this people would if they get infected!

Fools!

Always playing the man and not the ball!

Rubbish!

What if Osama is not dead? What if we are being lied to?

According to news, intelligence report gave away his position 2 weeks ago. This was followed by high level secret planning and a "successful" operation to raid his location. During the shootout, Osama was shot twice in his head. He died. They put him in the military chopper and flew him out to sea. En route his DNA was confirmed by matching it against the DNA taken from his sister's brain who died from cancer some weeks ago. After confirming his DNA, his body was buried in the "sea".

My fellow Nigerians, I am not too stupid not to see a sense of "nigerian-home-video-storyline" in this report.

People like to believe this kind of stories; so is it not possible that someone somewhere in the american "propaganda" programme wants to divert global attention to achieve an objective?

I am not saying he is not dead, and I am not saying he is either. What I am saying is history is full of such diversions which are often used as a means to achieve other ends.

I give you an example:

Some unscrupulous Nigerians were giving the american government serious problems recently. They were hacking into government systems and committing outrageous scams. From medical insurance scams alone the american government lost over $7m in less than a week and a 24-year old nigerian was the mastermind. In 12 months, a total of $312 million was lost to scams perpetrated by some unscrupulous nigerian residents in the USA.

The CIA was at a loss, the legal system prevented them from deep investigations since the privacy protection laws of the country also protected other nigerians. A decision was taken. Less than 4 months later, a "suitable" candidate was found. An intellectually unstable and mentally confused rich-kid of Nigerian parentage and nigerian/british citizenship. He was "groomed" and a few days after, he was caught allegedly trying to "blow" up a plane with bombs hidden in his underwear.

Immediately after his arrest, Nigeria was placed in list of "terrorist" countries. All privacy protection rights of innocent nigerians living in the USA were stripped off. The biggest arrests of Nigerian crime syndicates in US history was conducted successfully, but silently in order to avoid the truth behind the whole scene coming to the fore.

The story carried by Punch newspapers above is one of the long term rewards the FBI and CIA are still enjoying from "manipulating" the minds of everyone to think that Abdul Mutallab really wanted to blow the plane up.

Of Abdul Mutallab story, reason these:

1. By 2009, Al-Qaeda had perfected their "bombs" and only one in 10,000 will fail to detonate. Yet, Mutallab's bomb just "happened" to be that one! How convenient! He only suffered burns in his "kalakuta". LWKMD
2. Some people say he was arrested before he could detonate it. Rubbish! It only takes one pull on the detonator.
3. When you see terrorists who are being trained to blow themselves up, their eyes are hard, their countenance is one of confidence and conviction. When we saw Abdul Mutallab being arraigned in court, he looked like a complete suegbe who can even burst into tears if you shout on him.

4. The kind of brainwashing programmes being used on people now is alarming. The efficacy of this programmes is being tested from time to time. In the past 15 years in America, we have had over 25 cases of young "troubled" boys picking up rifles, entering a school and killing students before killing themselves. Are they really "troubled"? Don't be deceived, they are only programmed through serious brainwashing. And any time you hear of such cases, it is the brainwashers only trying to test a new skill they applied on the particular person in question. Any country that needs "suppressing" is usually a target for such programmes so that they can turn against themselves while the brains behind it are laughing their asses off. Most african countries are victims to this. In the last 5 years, Brazil has been the fastest growing economy in the world and their rise is seriously scaring the "powers that be". Just last month, a "troubled" boy entered a primary school with an automatic weapon and killed over 10 children before killing himself! This is just the beginning, watch and see other crazy things that will soon start happening in Brazil.

When Liberians and Seirra Leonean rebels were raping 3 year old girls before cutting their arms off, you think is sheer wickedness? Of course not, some brain washing programmes were being perfected. A typical fulani man in 1960 will never be violent to a christian. If they were, we would not have had so much christian population in the north today, neither would we have had some much investments from igbos and other tribes in the north as we have them today. Today, a typical fulani man is willing to "daggar" you for a bowl of kunu for being christian or igbo! Do you think he is "troubled"? Pls answer that one!

Through media, religion and money (there are others), Nigerians are being brainwashed daily. Many comments I read here on nairaland only buttresses this point. Most people don't know what our true problems are they just open their mouths and yarn anything that comes out!

Back to our main story, let's not be deceived! Osama bin Laden's story being paraded over media today is yet another diversion to achieve another objective. Perhaps a re-election advantage for Obama, perhaps an excuse to save money by preventing the huge amounts being spent on worthless operations in middle east, perhaps a way to glide the world into a new crises that will benefit only the "powers that be".

One never knows!
