SENATOR FAULTS PAYMENT OF TUITION FEES IN DOLLARS IN NIGERIAN SCHOOLS
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/03/senator-faults-payment-of-tuition-fees.html

Senator Yusuf Yusuf (APC-Taraba) has described as unacceptable the use of foreign currency for the payment of tuition fees in Nigerian schools.
Yusuf, who is Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Science and Technology, said this in an interview in Abuja.
According to the lawmaker, it is wrong for any institution of learning in the country to demand tuition fee in foreign currency.
“There is no support whatsoever for a school to demand any form of payment in Nigeria using foreign exchange.
“For me that is an aberration and it shouldn’t be allowed in any way.
“Cost your things in Naira and you will be paid in Naira; why would someone insist that he or she should be paid in dollars? Where would they get the dollars from?
“I do not think it is right. I do not think it is fair and we should go all out to stop this kind of practice,’’ he said.
The senator said that a bill was already in place in the Senate to amend the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act in that regard.
He urged the apex bank to closely monitor businesses in the country against using foreign currencies for local transactions.
The lawmaker further noted that some individuals and companies in the country were equally guilty of the practice.
“There are also claims that NNPC, that is government owned, pays pension and other forms of welfare packages in dollar. Do they have the right to do that?
“The only body that has the right in terms of disbursement of foreign exchange in this country today is the CBN,’’ he said.
On the recent appreciation of the Naira against other foreign currencies, Yusuf said that every bank branch must have foreign exchange window for selling forex to small buyers.
“There are some big time buyers of foreign exchange that are paying lower than what small holdings are paying, so, the market is lopsided,’’ he said.
He urged Nigerians to cut down on their demand for foreign exchange to acquire foreign goods in order to strengthen the Naira.
“There is no cosmetics product or textile that we cannot produce in this country, but unfortunately so much is coming in from China and other places.
“This insatiable taste for foreign goods is also affecting how much we can control the value of our Naira,’’ said the senator.

PoliticsDo Christians Hate God by alphonsojaybaz(op): 3:06pm On Mar 26, 2017
DO CHRISTIANS HATE GOD
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/03/do-christians-hate-god.html

There is an unchanging truth that has come from my relationship with God: God does not like me.
Somebody once asked the late wife of Billy Graham about her relationship with her husband. The person asked her: “Did you ever consider divorce?” “No,” she replied. “But I considered murder.” Martin Luther was struggling to obey the Ten Commandments. Somebody told him: “Why don’t you just concentrate on loving God instead.” Martin Luther fired back at him: “Love God? Sometimes I hate him.”
At a time in my life, I hated my “old man” T.S.B. Aribisala passionately. When I look back now, I realise that I hated him without a cause. I hated him because I was sinful and rebellious. I hated him because he would not allow me to have my own way. David says something similar about his adversaries: “For my love they are my adversaries: but I give myself unto prayer. And they have rewarded me evil for good, and hatred for my love.” (Psalm 109:4-5).
The same applies to Jesus, the Son of God. He says: “He who hates me hates my Father also. If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen and also hated both me and my Father. But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, ‘They hated me without a cause.’” (John 15:23-25).
Enemies of God
Are Christians “haters of God?” Do we hate God without realisng or admitting it? “Why do you hate me?” asks God of his people: “My people, what have I done to you? How have I burdened you? Answer me.” (Micah 6:3). “What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?” (Jeremiah 2:5). Who indeed can be described as “haters of God?”
Haters of God cannot be atheists. Atheists don’t believe God exists. You cannot hate someone who you claim does not exist, so atheists cannot be said to hate God. Similarly, unbelievers don’t seem to qualify because they don’t know God. You cannot hate someone you don’t know. Therefore for you to be a hater of God, you have to know God or at least have more than passing knowledge of him.
This brings Christians into focus. Christians have more than passing knowledge of God. Therefore, it is quite possible for Christians to hate God. Indeed, although many Christians today don’t seem to realise this, we can easily be classified as enemies of God.
God’s perspective
God said to David through Nathan in the issue of his adultery with Bathsheba and his murder of Uriah: “You have despised me.” (2 Samuel 12:10). But how can David, of all people, be said to despise God? He is the man supposed to be “after God’s heart.” (1 Samuel 13:14).
To despise God is even worse than hating him. It means “to look down upon him.” “To view him with contempt, scorn or disdain.” To consider him unworthy of notice or beneath one’s dignity. When we despise someone, we don’t only hate him, we are contemptuous of him. We feel he is beneath our dignity. But how can God possibly be beneath the dignity of man?
Let us just go by God’s own definition, for that is the most important issue. Remember this: his thoughts are not our thoughts. (Isaiah 55:cool. Jesus says: “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” (Matthew 6:24).
Here we see that God uses hate and despise in the same breath. If we love money, if we love women or men, if we love the world, then, as far as God is concerned, we are haters of God. Jesus also says: “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:26).
God’s jealous love
The first and principal commandment says: “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one! You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.” (Deuteronomy 6:4-5).
That does not leave room for money, wealth, sex, spouse, children, position, food, the world or anything else. When a man loves God, he loves only God. When a man loves God, he “hates” everything and everyone else. He only loves others because he loves God. When a man loves anything or anybody else but God, he hates God. That is God’s perspective, according to scripture.
Make no mistake about it, God is a jealous God. He is going to deal with all those who hate him. He is not going to use our self-serving definitions of love and hate. He is going to use his.
Every sinner hates God. Every time we sin (by transgressing the law of God), we show that we hate God. Every sinner loves death. God says: “He who sins against me wrongs his own soul; all those who hate me love death.” (Proverbs 8:36).
God hates sinners
Christian mythology says God hates sin but loves sinners. This is completely unscriptural. God hates sin and he hates sinners. The psalmist declares about God: “The boastful shall not stand in your sight; you hate all workers of iniquity.” (Psalm 5:5). “The LORD tests the righteous, but the wicked and the one who loves violence his soul hates.” (Psalm 11:5).
Don’t buy the lie: God does not love us just the way we are. He wants us to repent of sin. Neither is the agape love of God unconditional. God’s love is conditional. He says: “I love those who love me.” (Proverbs 8:17). Again, he says in Hosea: “All their wickedness is in Gilgal, for there I hated them. Because of the evil of their deeds I will drive them from my house; I will love them no more.” (Hosea 9:15).
We cannot know God and his conditional love unless we stop loving sin and God himself becomes our first love. Moses says: “All who behave unrighteously, are an abomination to the LORD your God.” (Deuteronomy 25:16). To what extent are Christian caught in this spider web?
When God called me, he called me by my name, which means “loves me” in Yoruba. He said to me: “Femi, Femi, Femi, I have loved you from the foundation of the world.” Nevertheless, there is an unchanging truth that has come from my relationship with God: God does not like me. That is why he wants to change everything about me. He does not just want to change some things. He wants to change everything.
Jesus and his disciples did not go around telling everyone: “God loves you.” No! They said: “Repent, for the kingdom of God is near.” However, the extra-biblical, humanistic gospel prevalent in the churches today de-emphasises the truth of God’s condemnation of sinners and focuses on God’s love for sinners. This misnomer militates against repentance and it has quenched the conviction of the Holy Spirit in the pews.

EX-PRESIDENT JONATHAN ASSURES PDP WILL BOUNCE BACK

Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would resolve the crisis that engulfed it and come out stronger.
Jonathan expressed the optimism at his country home in Otuoke, Bayelsa when he received the report of the Gov Seriake Dickson-led PDP reconciliation Committee.
He said resorting to courts for political disagreements was abnormal.
He applauded the committee for getting the two factions of the party to the negotiating table and added that a truce was in sight given the commitments so far given by the party faithful.
He noted that there was an urgent need to return the power to the people arguing that litigation had surrendered the mandate of the people to the judiciary.
“I have always believed that political differences should be resolved outside the courts, but unfortunately we are already involved with it and gone up to the Supreme Court, but we are hopeful of a political solution.”
“Party politics is supposed to be a family affair and ought to be resolved amicably without resorting to the courts,” Jonathan said.
Also, Bayelsa state Governor Seriake Dickson said he accepted the challenge of rebuilding the PDP to express gratitude to the party that gave Bayelsa the platform to lead Nigeria through Jonathan.
He said political option remained the best way of resolving the crisis within the party.
He noted that Jonathan laid the foundations for a political solution when he convened a meeting of PDP governors a few weeks ago that approved the peace plan.
He said the report, which is a roadmap to achieving peace was open to review and urged stakeholders with ideas to rebuild the party to table such ideas for discussion.
Speaking earlier, a member of the reconciliation committee Mr Mohammed Gana said Jonathan epitomised peace in the way he conceded defeat at the last general elections, a development that stabilized the country.
Gana applauded Jonathan for his efforts at rebuilding the party and urged party loyalists to support the efforts of the reconciliation committee.

The Governor of Bayelsa State and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Peace and Reconciliation Committee, Henry Seriake Dickson, on Friday held high level discussions with one of the founding fathers of the party, Mallam Adamu Ciroma.
The governor had earlier, as part of his peace shuttle, conferred with former Senate President, David Mark, in Abuja.
Dickson informed Mark that the visit was part of his engagement with key leaders of the party on the need to engender peace and genuine reconciliation in the PDP.
During the discussions with Ciroma, Dickson told him that the visit was to intimate him on the efforts of the committee to ensure a peaceful resolution of the ongoing crisis in the party.
While presenting the template prepared by the committee on a peaceful resolution of the crisis, the governor thanked Mallam Ciroma for finding time to receive the Committee.
He added that he and members of his committee valued the fatherly advice and words of wisdom given by the elder statesman on the way forward for the PDP.
The Governor also thanked the politician for his sacrifice and service to the fatherland and to the party all through the years.
He urged Mallam Ciroma to continue to provide his fatherly advice and counsel on party and national matters especially at this trying time for the party.
“We must say that we value this meeting and indeed your invaluable contributions to the growth and development of the PDP in particular and the nation as a whole,” Dickson said.
In his response, the elder statesman and founding father of the party, thanked the Governor for the efforts and sacrifices he has made to ensure that peace returns to the party.
He opined that discord and disagreements are a normal occurrence in political parties worldwide, adding that the resolution of the issues should matter to the party for now.
Ciroma advised the governor to continue to handle the important assignment with the goodwill and good intentions he has always displayed and wished him success in that regard.
He assured the governor of his support and counsel in the crucial task of reconciling the PDP, noting that a resolution of the crisis is critical for the survival of democracy in the country.
Governor Dickson was accompanied by a former Deputy Senate President and Vice Chairman of the Committee, Alhaji Ibrahim Mantu; former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Alhaji Bunu; and other members of the Committee.

SENATE INVESTIGATES SARAKI, MELAYE OVER FORGERY
source:http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/03/senate-investigates-saraki-melaye-over.html

The Senate yesterday ordered that its president, Bukola Saraki and Senator Dino Melaye be investigated over allegations bordering on forgery.
Specifically, the Red Chamber directed its Ethics and Privileges Committee to investigate Saraki and Melaye in order to ascertain whether or not the former imported a car with fake Customs papers and whether the latter forged a certificate of the Ahmadu Bello University as they are being accused.
It all started when former Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, raised a motion drawing the attention of the lawmakers to media reports on alleged seizure of a car belonging to Saraki and Melaye’s certificate scandal.
Observing that the two allegations had made the Senate a subject of public condemnation, Ndume requested that the allegations against the two lawmakers be investigated to ensure that there was no abuse of legislative privileges by them.
According to him, allegations that the Senate invited Hameed Ali because he reportedly seized a bullet-proof Range Rover belonging to Saraki for not having the proper papers needed to be looked into before the Red Chamber can move on with questioning Ali over the controversial issue of collecting Customs duties on old vehicles.
Ndume added allegations that Melaye did not really graduate from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria as claimed in his CV also has to be investigated to make sure the truth is revealed.
“Nigerians are angry and insulting the Senate over the scandals and, therefore, I urge my distinguished colleagues to investigate Saraki and Melaye’s messy allegations”, he said.
In the absence of Saraki who went to the Code of Conduct Tribunal for his corruption trial, the deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over plenary at the Red Chamber referred the matter to the committee on ethics and privileges chaired by Senator Samuel Anyanwu for investigation.
Ekweremadu said that the committee has four weeks to report back to the Senate.
The online media had been awash with reports on how a bulletproof Range Rover Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) owned by Senate President Saraki was allegedly imported with fake papers and seized by the Nigeria Customs Service.
It was alleged that some officers of the Nigerian Customs Service in Lagos had on January 11, 2017 intercepted and impounded a Range Rover car covered with documents indicating chassis number SALGV3TF3EA190243 and valued at N298 million, with expected customs duty of N74 million to have been paid on the car.
When the car was impounded, its driver allegedly said that the vehicle belonged to the senate president and presented a letter from the National Assembly liaison office in Lagos, indicating that the driver of the luxury vehicle was authorized to drive the senate president’s official Range Rover bulletproof car.
The driver allegedly presented documents that were found to be fake when asked to show evidence of duty payment and an end-user certificate from the office of the National Security Adviser that is usually required for bulletproof vehicles.
The Comptroller-General of the NCS, Col Hameed Ali (rtd), is currently at loggerheads with the Senate which is insisting that the retired colonel must wear Customs uniform before appearing before the lawmakers on Wednesday.
It was also reported that Senator Melaye allegedly did not graduate from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, contrary to the Senator’s claim. But Mr. Melaye denied the allegation, saying he was even currently

LEAKED MEMO: EL-RUFAI IS DISLOYAL, DISRESPECTFUL – SEN. SANI
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/03/leaked-memo-el-rufai-is-disloyal.html

Sen. Shehu Sani (Kaduna-APC) has urged the party to penalise Gov. Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State for allegedly leaking to reporters a memo he wrote to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Sani, who is the Vice-Chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, called for the punitive measures in a statement he released in Abuja on Saturday in reaction to the alleged leakage.

It will be recalled that media reports had alleged that El-Rufai told Buhari in a memo, that he was losing the vision and the momentum with which APC started the change campaign.

The governor was alleged to have called on the President to communicate constantly with Nigerians, so they would know the plans of his government.

The reports also claimed that El-Rufai acknowledged that a cabal was working hard to alienate the President from those, who even worked hard to secure his victory during the 2015 election.

Sani said it was ironic that while El-Rufai could not stand constructive criticism, he had the audacity to criticise the President.

“The governor always recommends that our party should punish me for criticising him.

“Now that he has fired a cruise missile at the President through a deliberately leaked memo, he should also be treated the same way.

“He accused me of being disloyal and disrespectful to the President and the party for speaking my mind.

“Now he has done his own cunningly by criticising the President and the party, disguised it as a memo and leaked it out to the press.

“If our able party chair would give me five strokes of the cane for speaking out, the governor (El Rufai) should be given thrice that for ‘leaking out’.

“It’s often said that look at the message and not the messenger, but there are times when you can only decipher the message by looking at the messenger,’’ he said.

According to Sani, while Gov. El-Rufai is entitled to his opinion and perception, the contradiction and irony is that he carried out an action he always stood against when criticised.

He described the governor as disloyal and disrespectful, saying: “the difference is that while mine is blunt, his is dubious.

“Secondly, for all the issues he raised against the President, his own is worst in his space of governance both in the existence of cabal or politics of exclusion, incompetence or public perception.

“The difference is that the President is tolerant of criticisms and alternative views.’’

He said the leakage of the memo to newsmen was an evidence that ‘‘logically he is leaking memo to rouse popular sympathy and create the image of ‘a competent alternative’ to ‘Baba.’

“The memo suggests he is trying to do what he recently accused me of.

“He said that I am in the habit of criticising him because I want to become Kaduna State Governor,’’ Sani said.

He advised President Buhari to be cautious, saying: “he who keeps a scorpion in his pocket must always watch his groin and he who inherits a cobra should know that it’s not a pet.’’ (NAN)

source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/03/baby-pulled-from-illinois-lake-as.html

A father found dead in a burning house in Illinois was shot in the head and a gun has been recovered from the SUV his ex-wife drove into a nearby lake.
The couple's three-month old baby was pulled from the sinking car after paramedic Todd Zobrist swam out into the chilly water to save him.
The body of his mother, 32-year-old Christy Lynn Campbell, was recovered several hours later.
The car was seen driving down a hill into Silver Lake in Highland about 15 minutes after a fire was reported at the house in Glen Carbon where 37-year-old Justin Campbell was later found dead.
The baby boy, who was initially unresponsive, was floating inside the car.
Mr Zobrist put the infant, Julian Campbell, on the SUV's roof and carried out CPR, before swimming with him back to shore.
The little boy is expected to recover.
Highland Emergency Medical Services chief Brian Wilson said Mr Zobrist had "definitely saved the child's life".
Six of Ms Campbell's children survived the fire. They will be placed with relatives after being looked after by the authorities.
According to court records, there were several domestic incident reports in the couple's relationship.
Ms Campbell obtained an emergency protection order against her husband and filed for divorce in 2012, claiming in court papers he "abuses me on a weekly basis".
She was granted a divorce the following year.

Fifty-eight-year-old Dorgu was born and brought up in Nigeria, where he trained as a doctor.
He studied at the London Bible College for his BA. He also studied for his ordination at Oak Hill Theological College from 1993 to 1995.
Dorgu who holds an MA in missiology is married to Mosun, a consultant child psychiatrist.
In the statement announcing Dr Dorgu’s appointment as Bishop of Woolwich, Bishop Christopher of the Diocese of Southwark said, “Karowei will be joining the Episcopal team in Southwark Diocese as the 13th Bishop of Woolwich.
“He brings a wealth of experience of urban parish ministry and has a real passion for evangelism and reaching out to those who are not churched with the love of Christ.
“Karowei signals life and an infectious faith, the first qualification for a Christian minister. He has reached across the wide spectrum of ethnicity in Islington and has built up a substantial multi-racial congregation at St John’s Upper Holloway.
“He is committed to the growth and flourishing of the Church and has a pastoral heart which will equip him well for his new Episcopal ministry.
“The Diocese of Southwark is committed to bringing the face of leadership into alignment with the faces in the pews and Karowei will, by God’s grace, be an attractive role model to many who are considering their call to discipleship and ministry.
“It became clear to me in the appointment process that Karowei was the person God is calling to be Bishop of Woolwich. He joins a gifted team with Hearts on Fire with the love of Christ eager to serve our parishes and the nearly three million people of South London and East Surrey. I greatly look forward to working with him and to welcoming Karowei and Mosun to the Diocese.”

BUHARI ORDERS FRESH PARIS CLUB LOAN REFUND TO STATES
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/03/buhari-orders-fresh-paris-club-loan.html

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday directed the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, and the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, to immediately release the second tranche of the London-Paris Club loan refund to states.
He said the presidential order should be carried out “appropriately and with dispatch.”
The President, who returned to the country on Friday from his 49-day medical vacation, also turned down advice by state governors to take more rest.
Buhari said he would not take any further rest until he had addressed all issues affecting Nigerians.
According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President spoke while addressing a meeting of the National Economic Council at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The council, which is made up of state governors, is chaired by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.
Buhari, who had earlier released the first tranche of N388bn to the state governments in December 2016, said the latest release was meant to ease their financial hardship.

He stressed the need for the state governors to ensure the settlement of unpaid salaries and pension arrears of their workers with the funds.
“I will not rest until I address those issues that affect our people.
“One of these basic things is the issue of salaries. It is most important that workers are able to feed their families, pay rent and school fees, then other things can follow,” the President was quoted to have said.
He, however, thanked the governors for their display of “love and respect” for him.
Buhari said he was overwhelmed by his recent experience in which states, irrespective of political differences, charged their citizens to pray in mosques and churches for his well-being.
He apologised to the governors for barring them from visiting him while he was in London.
“I didn’t want government to move to London. I wanted it to remain here and I am glad it did,” he said.
After narrating what he went through while on that vacation, Buhari noted the suggestion by the governors for him to take more rest, but insisted that he would remain relentless in the pursuit of the interest of the Nigerian people at all times.
This, according to him, was the only way to show his gratitude to the people who, he said, “had given so much to me. I was overwhelmed by the celebration of my return all across the country.”
The Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, Abdul-Aziz Yari of Zamfara State, assured the President, on behalf of his colleagues, that they would continue to support his policies and actions which they had adjudged as being in the nation’s best interest.
The governors of Imo, Akwa-Ibom, Osun and Abia states thanked the President for saving the day for the states through the first tranche of the London-Paris Club loan refunds.
They, however, called for the immediate release of the second one.
They also commended the trust the President reposed in Osinbajo, whom they said did not disappoint when he acted as President.
Buhari had arrived the venue of the meeting chaired by Osinbajo at about 12.30pm while it was already underway.
He went round the hall to shake hands with the state governors and deputy governors standing in for their governors one after the other.
The governors also presented the President with a “get-well” card which they all signed.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Punch’s Sunday Scoop, popular Nollywood actress, opened up on her r0mance with snakes, lions and more, adding that she had an awesome time while holidaying in South Africa recently.
Rukky was seen as she boldly let a python move around her body. She also struck a pose with the snake on her neck.

The actress whose act of leaving a snake slithering across her body while she caressed it in a loving manner, left many of her fans wondering how she managed playing with the creatures, confessed her love for animals.
She said; “Playing with a python or lion is not a big deal. I have always loved animals and I like having them around me. I don’t see anything unusual about that.”
On whether she entertained any fear of being bitten by the reptile, she said; “What many people don’t know is that those animals were in a zoo and they have been tamed, so they didn’t pose any danger to me. I wasn’t the only one there as lots of other animal lovers were also present and they equally fooled around with the creatures.”
Dismissing insinuations by some of her fans who interpreted her nearness to the snakes to mean that she’s diabolical, she said; “Some people are boring and have a myopic attitude but I don’t worry myself about them. Since when did playing with a snake make one a witch? As an actress, what if I am required to play a role with snakes, am I supposed to turn it down? I don’t need to explain myself and my actions to anybody.”

Explosions in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, in the early hours of Wednesday, March 15 has left not fewer than six people dead.
Sahara Reporters writes that the explosions were caused by Boko Haram suicide bombers that detonated improvised explosive devices attached to their bodies.

The attack, it said, occurred at the Muna Garage in Maiduguri which was just recently attacked by the insurgents.
According to a Facebook user Medan Oukoh, who also posted a video of what was left of the bombers, the attack occurred at around 2.15am on Wednesday.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said in a statement that the attack was actually carried out by four female Boko Haram bombers at about 1.15am on Wednesday.
The suicide bombers and two other people were killed in the attack and an additional 16 people suffered injuries, NEMA said.
The statement by Mallam Abdulkareem Ibrahim, the information officer in charge of NEMA's Northeast zonal office, read:
“Four female teenage suicide bombers and two other men died (6 people) when the four females detonated explosives at Usmanti along Mina Garage road at about 1. 15 am.
“Sixteen people who got injured were administered with first aid by rescue workers before being transported to the State Specialist Hospital and University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital in Maiduguri Borno state.”
The attack comes just a day after the Abubakar Shekau-led faction of the Islamist insurgent group released a video showing the gruesome and cold-blooded murder of three men it claimed were government spies that infiltrated it.
Nigerians are not pleased with the latest attack. Many wonder when the bombings will stop while others are confident that Boko Haram's end is near.
But the Nigerian Army has been securing victories over the group as it continued clearance of the terrorist group's former hideouts in different places in Borno state.

ASUU GIVES FG, STATES 14-DAY ULTIMATUM ON SALARIES, DEDUCTIONS
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/03/ASUU-gives-fg-states-14-day-ultimatum.html

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Wednesday gave federal and state governments a 14-day ultimatum within which to pay the shortfall in their salaries running into millions of naira or face unrest in the nation’s universities.
The body also gave some state governments owing lecturers their salaries and allowances the same period within which they should commence the payment of the outstanding salaries.
The affected state universities according to ASUU included Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LUATECH), Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) and NDU.
Addressing a press conference at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), the Ondo State capital, the university lecturers under the Akure Zone of ASUU said the government should not do anything that would plunge the university system into unnecessary chaos over the shortfall in salary payment and the non-payment of salaries.
In a statement jointly signed by Dr Alex Odiyi, Dr Bola Oniya, Dr Caleb Aboriade and Prof Olu Olufayo said virtually all the universities in the country are experiencing different percentages of shortfall in the payment of their salaries.
Odiyi, who read the statement on behalf of other Chairmen of ASUU of other universities, said public universities in Nigeria have begun to experience worse reductions in salaries components of their allocation with the consequence of receiving fractions or percentage reduction in their salaries.
According to him, most federal universities did not have the capacity to make up for the shortfall in the salary component. This, he said, affected Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife (OAU), FUTA, Ekiti State University (EKSU) University of Jos, University of Ibadan (UI), University of Calabar and ATBU, Bauchi.

SENATE RIDICULES BUHARI’S OFFICE WITH MAGU’S REJECTION, SAYS FALANA
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/03/senate-ridicules-buharis-office-with.html

A Lagos-based human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has said that the upper legislative chamber ridiculed the office of President Muhammadu Buhari by rejecting the confirmation of Ibrahim Magu as chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The upper legislative chamber had cited a security report from the Department of State Services (DSS) as reason for its action.
But Falana advised Buhari to restrain the secret police from sabotaging the fight against corruption.
The lawyer said some senators under investigation by the commission ought not to have participated in the screening.
“The rejection of the nomination of Mr Ibrahim Magu as the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) this afternoon by the senate on the basis of a security report compiled by the State Security Service is the height of official ridicule of the office of the president,” he said in a statement.
“It is high time the State Security Service was restrained by President Buhari from sabotaging the fight against corruption by the federal government.
“With respect to the senate the confirmation hearing hurriedly conducted today is illegal in every material particular. The participation of many senators who are either under investigation or being prosecuted by the EFCC has vitiated the entire proceedings of the senate on ground of conflict of interest
“It is also a contravention of the rules of the senate which stipulates that matters which are sub judice shall not be discussed by the senate.”
Falana said Buhari could still re-nominate Magu or allow him to keep working in acting capacity.
However, notwithstanding the rejection of the nomination of Magu by the senate, Falana said that the options open to the president are clear and straight forward.
Such options, he said, include that “Mr. Magu’s nomination may be re-presented to the Senate if and when the Federal Government decides to put its house in order
“Alternatively, the president may allow Mr. Magu to remain the acting chairman of the EFCC since he was appointed in that capacity pursuant to section 171 of the constitution.
“But if the president is not satisfied with Mr. Magu’s performance, he is at liberty to appoint another person whose nomination will be forwarded to the Senate in accordance with section 2 (3) of the EFCC Act, 2004.
“In the light of the foregoing, President Buhari is enjoined to ensure that the fight against corruption is not derailed by highly placed corrupt elements who have enlisted the support of fifth columnists and reactionary forces in the government.”

BOKO HARAM BEHEADS ALLEGED GOVERNMENT SPY, EXECUTES TWO IN VIDEO
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/03/boko-haram-beheads-alleged-government.html

Boko Haram yesterday released a new video, purportedly showing the execution of three alleged Federal Government spies on its operations in the Northeast. It beheaded one and shot two others with a Kalashnikov rifle.
The sect in the seven-minutes video also accused the three spies of working for the Directorate of Military Intelligence (DMI) to infiltrate the group.
Boko Haram in the video displayed a large cache of high-grade military weapons, including what appeared to be anti-aircraft missiles. The terrorists group also boasted that it has not been DECIMATED as claimed by the Federal Government and remains in a place in Nigeria that the military could not “locate and recapture.”
The video, which was in Hausa and Arabic, was believed to have been released by the Abubakar Shekau factional Boko Haram leader. The Army has described the video as mere propaganda that cannot derail its ongoing operation.
Challenging the factionalised group to mention the part of Nigeria they are hiding, which cannot be recovered by the military, the Director Army Public Relations (DAPR), Brigadier General Sani Usman, in a text message to The Guardian dismissed the group. ‘’They are of no consequence. We are focusing on stabilization and consolidation of our counter-terrorism and counter insurgency operations. Now we have gone beyond the terrorists’ propaganda. Let them mention the part of Nigerian territory they are holding or hiding,” Usman said.
Meanwhile, the Federal High Court, Abuja Division, yesterday ordered seven Boko Haram members, who allegedly killed 11 foreigners in 2012 to be remanded in Kuje prisons.
Justice John Tsoho gave the order after they were arraigned on 11-count charge of conspiracy, terrorism and murder. They pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Judge disagreed with the prosecution that the defendants should remain in the custody of Department of State Security Service (DSS).
He said the law provides that the defendants should be remanded in prisons custody, stressing that it was the responsibility of the Federal Government to ensure that adequate security is provided at the prisons.
The defendants – Mohammed Usman, a.k.a Khalid Al-barnawi and leader of Boko Haram splinter group, Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis Sudan, also known as Ansaru, Mohammed Bashir Saleh, Umar Mohammed Bello, a.k.a Abu Azzan, Mohammed Salisu, a.k.a Datti, Yakubu Nuhu, a.k.a Bello Maishayi, Usman Abubakar, a.k.a Mugiratu, and Halima Haliru, were said to have, between 2011 and 2013, in Sokoto, Kebbi, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe and other states in the Northern part of Nigeria, engaged in acts of terrorism.
The matter has been adjourned till April 11 for commencement of trial.

Former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to Vanguard, the former presidential aspirant left the party along with 10 Kano lawmakers on Tuesday.
This comes one year after the APC leadership in Kano State initiated moves to suspend Kwankwaso over what it called anti-party activities.
The APC Chairman in Kano, Haruna Doguwa, had said Kwankwaso allegedly exhibited actions capable of compromising the party’s unity.
Earlier on Monday, a chieftain of the PDP in Kano, Alhaji Musa Iliyasu, said Kwankwaso was set to return to the party.
Iliyasu added that reliable sources confirmed to him that Kwankwaso had been contacting the national body of the PDP about his return to the party.
“I heard from reliable sources that the former governor is planning to dump APC for another party before the 2019 general elections and most likely he is coming back to PDP,” he had told Daily Trust.
But in his reaction, the APC state chairman, Alhaji Umar Haruna Doguwa had dismissed the suggestion.
“It is not true. Kwankwaso has no plan to dump APC.
“It is just mere speculations by some politicians that are envious of his political progress.
“Similar thing was said of Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the former education minister, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau,” he said.

NBC EXTENDS DEADLINE FOR BROADCAST STATIONS TO PAY DEBTS TO MARCH 31
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/03/nbc-extends-deadline-for-broadcast.html

At a media briefing yesterday, the Director General of the commission, Is-haq Modibbo, said the order to the affected stations to pay their debts totalling N5billion was given after proper consultations.
He warned that after the grace period, the commission would not hesitate to close down the stations which refuse to renew their licence fees plus other obligations.
Two weeks ago, at a stakeholders’ conference, NBC admonished the 54 licensed broadcast stations of the consequences of not paying their fees within 60-day.
He pointed accusing fingers at the stations for violating the commission’s statutory act that required them to inform it six months before the expiration of licences with expression of intention to continue as licensees.
“Those licences cannot be held indefinitely by individuals. There is another list of over 120 licences that were paid within the mandatory period but were unable to come on air within the mandatory two years; they are also being processed for revocation. And they will be revoked,” Modibbo said, adding that some Nigerian broadcast stations had persistently refused to pay licence fees.
He similarly accused licence holders of mounting pressure on the commission by lobbying political figures to bend the rule.
“Licence fees are in arrears; there is no plan by many of these stations to pay; while some even have the temerity to write NBC, the regulatory institution, that the amount they are asked to pay is too much, consequently, they then told us how much they are willing to pay, and even adding the time they are going to pay such sums that they have decided not pay.”
The NBC also announced plans to meet the June 2017 Digital Switch Over deadline by rolling out in six states. The states include Kaduna, Delta and Gombe and Plateau States and Abuja, while Kwara, Osun and Enugu State would be mobilised for the second signal ITS.

WHY I CAN’T APPEAR BEFORE YOU ON WEDNESDAY – CUSTOMS BOSS, HAMMED ALI TELLS SENATE
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/03/why-i-cant-appear-before-you-on.html

The comptroller-general of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), Hammed Ali, who is expected to appear before the Senate in his official uniform on Wednesday, March 15th, has disclosed that he can not appear before the lawmakers as scheduled because the day “coincided with the fortnightly meeting of the NCS management”.
In a letter to the Senate and signed by an Assistant Comptroller General, Hameed Ali asked the Senate to differ the date of his appearance against the backdrop that the summon coincides with the Routine Management meeting of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS.
The letter was read at plenary by the Clerk of the Senate.
The Senate however kicked against the position of the Customs boss, insisting that he must appear.
In his remarks, Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan who suggested that a new date be fixed for him to appear, however said that two wrongs cannot make a right.
Senator Lawan’s position was however kicked against by Senator James Manager, Delta South who urged the senators to be firm as the position of the upper chambers was being tested, adding that he met a very strong Senate, it is still strong and he would want to leave behind a very strong Senate.

INTRUDER ARRESTED AFTER BREACHING WHITE HOUSE
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/03/intruder-arrested-after-breaching-white.html

A man scaled the fence along the southern side of the White House before midnight Friday — the first such breach reported during Donald Trump’s presidency, the Secret Service said.

Trump would have been at the White House at the time, according to his schedule, but the intruder didn’t manage to get far.

Secret Service officers arrested him on the south grounds without incident. The man, who was not immediately identified, had been carrying a backpack, but there were no hazardous materials found inside of it, officials said.

The man claimed he had an appointment with the president, according to an official with firsthand knowledge of the incident, but there was no such arranged meeting.

Officers, meanwhile, also swept the south and north grounds of the White House, but “nothing of concern to security operations was found,” the Secret Service said in a statement.

The White House security level was temporarily raised to “orange” — one of the highest — as a result of the intrusion.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly was briefed on the incident. It’s unclear whether any other members of the Trump family were home at the time, and the Metropolitan Police Department deferred comments to the Secret Service.

The White House has seen numerous attempts by people trying to hop the fence surrounding the building. A 2014 incident in which an Army veteran carried a folding knife onto the grounds — and got as far as the East Room — led the White House to install sharp metal spikes on the fencing.
