Delta state allegedly paid Ibori N250m in UK prison
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/02/delta-state-allegedly-paid-ibori-n250m.html

Investigations have revealed that the Delta State Government paid former Governor James Ibori N250m while he was in jail in the United Kingdom between 2012 and 2016.

The former Delta State governor was convicted on February 27 2012, after pleading guilty to 10 counts of money laundering and conspiracy to defraud at a Southwark Crown Court, London.

The law makes provision for an ex-governor to be paid N50m per year among other perks.

According to punch, calculations showed that for the five years Ibori spent in the UK prison, he was paid N250m by the state government.

Confirming the report, the Delta State Government on Saturday said it was legal for it to honour the laws of the state by paying severance packages and other entitlements ascribed to former governors and deputies including Ibori.

The state government said it would be flouting the law if it decided not to pay the former governor.

Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa said on Saturday that if the state government was owing Ibori his severance package, the government would clear the backlogs as clearly stipulated by law.

PoliticsNigerians Should Appreciate Their Leaders, Says Waziri by alphonsojaybaz(op): 6:58am On Feb 13, 2017
Nigerians should appreciate their leaders, says Waziri
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/02/nigerians-should-appreciate-their.html

A former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mrs. Farida Waziri, on Sunday expressed concern over the perceived politicisation of the the medical trip of President Muhammadu Buhari with a call on Nigerians to cultivate the habit of encouraging their leaders, rather than demonizing them.

According to her, the present economic hardship in the country should not lead to some citizens wishing their leaders dead.

“Speaking positively about our leaders and country will no doubt have a positive impact on our collective image around the world. Agreed, there is much suffering in the land but this should not change us from being the good people that we have always been , by wishing our leaders dead. Let us have a rethink. We can’t afford to cut our noses to spite our faces. We must not lose our humanity even in the face of hardship and recession, because it is our collective effort to build this nation”, the ex-EFCC chairman emphasised.

Waziri in a statement obtained by THE PUNCH in Abuja, said while great nations adore their leaders and do not talk ill of them especially the good ones, Nigerians do not wish their leaders well.

She said, “The world over, great nations; whether the US, UK, China, Germany or France and more, they don’t talk ill of their leaders, instead, they encourage them and build them as exemplary national figures. As wife of Nigeria’s Ambassador to Turkey in 2004-2008, I arrived at Atatürk Airport Istanbul, my escort informed me proudly that the airport is named after the father of modern Turkey.

“Downtown Istanbul main street was also adorned with portraits of the man, Atatürk. This, to me, is one clear way to encourage and build our national figures and leaders. Let the good ones serve as good examples of good leadership and the bad ones as such.

PoliticsAnother $151 Million Looted Funds Recovered Through Whistle-blower -lai Mohammed by alphonsojaybaz(op): 5:28pm On Feb 12, 2017
We recovered another $151 million, N8 billion looted funds through whistle-blower - Lai Mohammed

source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/02/we-recovered-another-151-million-n8.html

The Federal Government said it recovered another 151 million dollars and N8 billion looted funds from three sources through whistle-blowers.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Lagos.

Mohammed sad actionable information given by whistle-blowers to the office of the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation led to the recovery of the looted fund.

He said the looted funds do not include the 9.2 million dollars in cash allegedly owned
by a former Group Managing Director of the NNPC, also a dividend of the whistle-blower policy.

“The biggest amount of 136.7 million dollars was recovered from an account in
a commercial bank, where the money was kept under an apparently fake
account name.

“This was followed by N7 billion and 15 million dollars from another person and N1 billion from yet another,” he said.

The minister reiterated the position of government that there was a primitive and mindless looting of the national treasury under the last administration.

He said the whistle-blower policy has started yielding fruit, few months after its adoption by the government.

“The whistle-blower policy is barely two months old and Nigerians have started feeling its impact, how a few people squirrelled away public funds.

It is doubtful if any economy in the world will not feel the impact of such mind-boggling looting of the treasury as was experienced in Nigeria.

”Yet whatever has been recovered so far, including the 9.2 million dollars by the EFCC, is just a tip of the iceberg,” he said.

The minister appealed to Nigerians with useful information on looted funds to continue to provide the authorities with such information, saying confidentiality will be maintained with regards to the source of the
information.

He also reminded Nigerians of the financial reward aspect of the policy.

”If there is a voluntary return of stolen or concealed public funds or assets on the account of the information provided, the whistle blower may be entitled to anywhere between 2.5 per cent (Minimum) and 5.0 per cent (Maximum) of the total amount recovered,” he said. (NAN)

TravelNo Plan To Convert Arik To National Carrier — FG by alphonsojaybaz(op): 4:14pm On Feb 12, 2017
No plan to convert Arik to national carrier — FG
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/02/no-plan-to-convert-arik-to-national.html

The Federal Government is not planning to convert Nigeria’s biggest and beleaguered airline, Arik Air, to a national carrier, contrary to speculations making the rounds since the takeover of the airline.

Some senior officials at the aviation arm of the Federal Ministry of Transportation disclosed this on Saturday.

This is as the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria revealed that if not for the Federal Government’s intervention in Arik Air, the airline would have stopped operations on Monday, February 13, due to its heavy debts.

It can be recalled that the Federal Government, through AMCON, had taken over the operations of Arik Air and appointed Capt. Roy Ukpebo Ilegbodu as its new manager.

The report stated that the airline was indebted to the tune of over N300bn, with AMCON alone owed N135bn, while its obligations to aviation fuel suppliers, insurance firms, aircraft maintenance organisations, the Federal Government and the various aviation agencies, as well as food vendors made up the balance.

Reacting to claims that the government was planning to convert the airline to a national carrier, officials at the transportation ministry told newsmen that they were aware of the rumour, but described it as mere and false speculations.

The Deputy Director, Press and Public Affairs, Aviation Ministry, Mr. James Odaudu, explained that the government only intervened in Arik through AMCON in order to save the carrier from collapse, adding that the Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika, had never given an inkling to suggest that Arik will be converted to a national carrier.

Odaudu said, “I have heard such claims too and they are just speculations. The federal government is not planning to convert Arik Air to a national carrier, I don’t have that information. Like the minister has always stated, the federal government will establish a private sector driven national carrier.

“As far as I know, I don’t think the government will want to start a national carrier with an airline that is full of encumbrances like Arik Air. Why did AMCON take over Arik Air? It is because of the problems faced by the airline.

“We’ve heard even senior officials of the airline saying that the Federal Government wants to take over Arik because it want to establish a national carrier, but to the best of my knowledge that’s not true. The truth is that as far as government is concerned, the more healthy airlines we have in the country, the better for us as a nation.”

On its intervention in Arik, AMCON stated that within 24 hours of the government’s involvement in Arik Air, the airline had started receiving assistance to be able to offer flight services.

Meanwhile, some aggrieved customers of Arik Airlines have commended the Federal Government for taking over the operations of the country’s biggest carrier.

The Federal Government, through AMCON, on Thursday, took over the operations of Arik Air, and appointed Capt. Ukpebo Ilegbodu as its new manager.

Arik has, in recent times, been in the news for negative reasons, from suspension of service on some routes to delays and outright cancellation of flights.

A commentator on Nairaland, identified simply as Dynamo, said his experience flying Arik airline was below expectations.

Dynamo said he recently booked a return flight ticket with Arik from Lagos to London but was told on the day of departure that the flight had been rescheduled without an apology.

A Facebook user, identified simply as Kayode Daodu, said the Federal Government’s decision was long overdue because of poor management of the company.

Daodu said, “This poor management (of Arik) has led to low morale from the staff as their passengers are been treated poorly, especially through flight cancellation and rescheduling.”

Narrating his experience on the medium, another aggrieved Arik customer, Ojo Adekunle, said the airline’s predicament was caused by its failure to care for its customers.

FamilyFamily Petitions FG Over Polish Man’s Cremation Of Nigerian Wife by alphonsojaybaz(op): 7:10am On Feb 09, 2017
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2017/02/family-petitions-fg-over-polish-mans.html

The family of Mrs. Oluwashola Gaska (nee Adefolalu) has petitioned the Federal Government to unravel the mystery surrounding her death in Poland and the cremation of her corpse by her husband, Mr. Jakub Gaska, without their consent. .

The deceased’s elder sister, Mrs. Abimbola Essien-Nelson, at a press conference in Lagos on Wednesday, alleged that Oluwashola was murdered and her corpse hastily cremated to cover it despite the family’s objection.

In the petition, dated January 29, 2017, and titled, ‘Petition against Mr. Jakub Gaska for the murder, unlawful cremation and burial of Oluwashola Atunrayo Gaska (nee Adefolalu) in Krakow, Poland, on December 28, 2016,’ the family detailed how the late Oluwashola, who studied in Poland, settled in the country and later married Gaska in 2010. .

The petition read in part, “The last verbal conversation I had with the deceased took place on December 24, 2016, and she made no complaint about her health. At about 11.28am, on Wednesday, December 28, 2016, I received a telephone call from the husband that ‘there had been an accident, Shola had fallen unconscious and had died.’
.
. “The husband did not tell me the nature of the so called accident. I was still conversing with the husband when the telephone was disconnected. “The husband later called me back on the same day, stating that Oluwashola fell ill on Tuesday, and that he and his sister took her to the a hospital (the name of the hospital was not provided). He said she passed away at about 3am on Wednesday, December 28, 2016.” .
.

The petition added that plans were being made to travel to Krakow to give the deceased a befitting burial when her husband informed them that her remains would be cremated as he and Olwashola agreed during a discussion.

It was gathered that the family requested that the husband wait until the arrival of family members in January 2017 to partake in the funeral rites.
“We also made it clear to him that because of the sudden nature of her death, we want to see her corpse. We sent several sets of representatives from the Nigerian community to him in this regard, but he refused to allow anyone access to the corpse. His response was that Oluwashola said only Ambibola and no other person, should see her corpse,” the petition read.

Gaska reportedly cremated Oluwashola’s remains on January 2, 2017. He also allegedly interred the ashes on January 7, 2017, without officially informing the Adefolalus.

The Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday ordered a temporary forfeiture of N75million found in the account of an activist-lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN). The account is domiciled in Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB). .

The order followed an application by EFCC. Justice Abdulaziz Anka gave the order based on motion ex-parte filed by the commission. EFCC prayed the court to freeze Ozakhome’s account temporarily on the ground that the N75m was suspected to be proceed of crime. .

The commission said the lawyer deposited the money last December 15. An EFCC investigator, Tosin Owobo, who swore to an affidavit of urgency, prayed the court to freeze the account for 120 days, pending conclusion of investigation. Justice Anka granted the prayer.

Ozekhome, however, says the money was a part payment of legal fees by Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose. He said the fund was for legal services he rendered the governor in his personal capacity, and to his aides.
