According to reports, oil products take 40% of our imports. That's a very significant figure. The positive effects on FX, if oil imports are suspended, ought to be immediate, but you may choose to be blind, especially when Naira is even depreciating further.
And it is two weeks of reduced importation that will give you immediate impact? All the ones we’ve imported on credit in the last six months, we won’t pay for it again because we have reduced importation in the last two weeks, right?

I agree with you completely. The administration can do better in managing the reforms.

Fighting corruption is another thing entirely. It’s one problem I can’t figure out how we will get out of it. It is too endemic. We just have to find a way to improve the economy despite the corruption. It can’t be eradicated.

What's his antecedent in corporate business management?

Am not interested in voting for now, but I think those that wants to vote, know better now.
If Obi is a presidential material based on his performance as Anambra State Governor, Sanwo Olu is by same standard a far better presidential material.

SanwoOlu has delivered the Blue and Red lines in Lagos. Where is the Onitsha monorail that Peter Obi signed in 2010?

Oga dollar was used to import those products before now right?

So since October, we did not need that! Dollar was saved as FX or let’s say that the pressure that amount of dollars was supposed to exert was taken off and it ought to have an immediate impact on the value of the Naira right ?

Yesterday Naira crashed further to over N1,700

Are you an APC supporter? Let me know how to package the insult
lol. You can’t get an immediate impact. PMS is not imported on cash and carry basis. A lot of these transactions are done on credit. Even if we don’t import anything for 6 months, we will still keep paying for what we’ve imported previously and servicing our debts. There is no immediate gain. It takes time for the gains to start trickling in.

Buhari did not implement any reform. He continued with the wasteful pattern of previous administration and even took it to another level.

Tinubu has departed from that wasteful pattern of spending all we earn plus loans to subsidies PMS and keep the exchange rate low. We are now on a new course and we need to remain consistent to it if we want to see result.

Demonic government in power
There is a reason the world bank guy said we should stay true to the ongoing reform for at least 15 years.

You guys simplify our economic challenges by thinking just two weeks of decline in PMS import will automatically result in Naira stability. It’s not that quick and easy. We need to remain consistent for at least a year before we can start counting the impact of the forex savings on our local currency. There is no shortcut to any of these things. It takes time and consistency for result to start showing.

Petrol import into Nigeria drops sharply in October as Dangote refinery ramps up production

The importation of premium motor spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, into Nigeria, has significantly declined in the first two weeks of October as the Dangote Refinery increased production to meet local demand.

This is according to S&P Global Commodity Insights ship-tracking report published on Tuesday.

Data from S&P Global Commodities at Sea shows that only 280,400 barrels of gasoline and blend stock were imported into Nigeria during the first week of October, ending on the 6th, via a single Medium Range (MR) vessel.

This marks a sharp decline from the weekly average of 1.3 million barrels recorded in August.

According to the report, in the week ending October 13, only one product tanker was reported to have shipped gasoline to Nigeria, carrying 290,567 barrels from Antwerp to Lagos.

These two October shipments are significantly lower than the 12 cargoes dispatched in the first half of both August and September.

Since October 8, no additional gasoline shipments have been brought into Nigeria.

The report indicates that the decline in import activity marks the first disruption to the previously well-established flow of fuel, primarily from Northwest Europe to West Africa, driven by the emergence of Dangote refinery’s domestic refining capacity.

“There is no schedule for gasoline coming from Europe to Nigeria at the moment. The rest will have to come from whatever is in the Offshore Lome market,” one trade source said, speculating that the new refinery might meet at most a quarter of domestic demand.

Meanwhile, the report notes that traders have warned that Nigeria could still face a substantial fuel deficit in the absence of imported supply.

What you should know

Following the sale of crude oil to the Dangote Refinery in Naira earlier this month, the federal government authorized petroleum marketers to lift petrol directly from the 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) refinery, bypassing the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited.

This move marks the full deregulation of the downstream sector, signaling the end of the costly but widely supported fuel subsidy.

Since September, the Dangote Refinery has supplied petroleum products to the market, with retail prices initially ranging between N850 and N900 per litre.

However, with the NNPC no longer serving as the sole off-taker of petrol from the refinery, retail prices have risen from approximately N998 to N1,030 per litre.

Upon reaching full operational capacity, the Dangote Refinery aims to meet local fuel demand while also exporting to neighbouring African countries and the Caribbean, thereby disrupting Nigeria’s petroleum importation industry.

The man who responded in the last screenshot was very correct.

Peter Obis response to Rufai was simply what he would do seeing how the floatation he himself would have done is totally uncontrollable! His response was about what he would do TODAY to stem the tide.
Well, if Peter ever becomes the president, he should do whatever he likes. If he likes, he should use the entire country as collateral to borrow to pay for PMS subsidies and keep exchange rates low. But you see this Tinubu that is currently your president, he won’t toe that ruinous path that have led to nothing but debt and economic stagnation. He will sustain this policy till the end of his administration.

The era of rent and arbitrage seekers making billions from a corrupt subsidy and multiple exchange rate regime is over for good. Just this morning, we woke up to the news of Allen Onyema’s criminal indictment. One of the allegation against him was that he collected $20million from CBN to buy aero planes but diverted the funds back to Nigeria to sell at the black market only to make double the money. For how long do you guys want this criminality to continue? Don’t you guys have any pity for your country? Must everything be politics?

To be fair to Oby, she hasn't criticized the policy yet, in fact, I am yet to see any real economic expert criticize the policy. For obvious reasons, they will not want to stick out their neck to defend the government and to explain the benefits of the reform because they will be accused mostly by the ever-toxic hoebidient of having taken bribes, so they would rather just keep quiet.

When the positives begin to show, of course, they will start rearing their ugly heads out then.
If Peter Obi happens to be the president implementing this policy, would she be quiet? Wouldn’t she stick out her neck to defend him? Why are they all quiet now? Because the president is Yoruba?

See, anyone that fails to stick out his or neck to defend mr. President’s policies at this very difficult time better keep their peace when the policies start beating fruit.

Immediately Springfield Aviation Company LLC, owned by Allen Onyema, got the money; it was sent to his US bank controlled by Allen Onyema, who laundered at the money and sent the money back to Nigeria.
The saddest part of this revelation is that we always accuse northerner of being the major culprit behind round tripping and forex corruption. SE folks always tell us they are self made without any support from FG or Nigeria.

Now, this is one of the richest Igbo man engaging in foreign exchange corruption, round tripping and money laundering. Took $20million from government only to sell it back at the black market for double the rate.

At the end of the day, we will Keep blaming Mr. President and government for Naira constantly losing value while no one blames unscrupulous business men like Allen Onyema.

YES We have been able to expand the economy by subsidizing PMS and defending the naira especially during Jonathan's term....

stop defending nonsense.... You can not achieve stability by free floating your currency, you can not develop the infrastructure, and the enabling production environment when funds are been looted by a highly corrupt dishonest government..... You can not attract foreign investors to invest when there is high rate of insecurity....
Since things were working perfectly under Jonathan, why did he attempt to remove PMS subsidy in 2012? Why did he remove subsidy from Kerosene and Diesel? Make it make sense, buddy.

😂 😂... my brother, every serious nation subsidises its energy sector in some way... otherwise we are making no headway but let me understand your thought process.

Removal of Subsidy frees up funds ba? What then is point of subsidy removal when CURRENCY FLOATATION has wiped of its gains?

Why are companies pulling out if the future is bright? Companies that NEVER PULLED OUT during the dark days of the military and some of the worst economic conditions like SAP?

It appears you guys don't understand the impact of the damage of the twin policies of subsidy removal and naira floatation.. 😂
I’ve been very specific about the need to remove subsidy from PMS and exchange rate because those two have take everything we earned and borrowed for years. It’s really funny seeing you guys arguing that we should continue on that same route. You guys really think we will still get anyone to borrow us money again in the next two years if we continue with the Buhari era policies? Do you guys understand the kind of mess we are in economically? Do you understand what it means to earn N100 and use N97 to pay for debt? Do you understand the corruption in the subsidy and forex system?

You talked about foreign companies leaving. Yes, some of them will leave because they saw that the game is up. They’ve sucking up our forex earnings for years and not that they saw that the party is over, they have to leave.

Before May 29 last year, a company that made a net profit after tax of N2000 for example can conveniently cover the N2000 through official CBN channels to a little over $4. And of course, this will be repatriated to the home country. Now that government is no longer subsidizing the Naira, same company with a profit of N2000 can only get a little over $1 to repatriate. No more free meal and that’s why some left. Those who are serious and ready to work are still here.

Like I said, we need a sustained period of time. We will achieve exchange rate stability over time l. That’s the goal for now but it requires time and policy consistency. We can debate how things can be done better and how the reforms can be better managed for optimal result. However, saying we should go back to borrowing billions of dollars and printing trillions of ways and means loan just to keep PMS low and Naira strong is a no no.

How do you expand the economy? 🤔... where will you get money to do it?
Have we been able to expand the economy by spending all our forex earnings plus loans to subsidize PMS and defend the naira in the last 30 years or so? That’s definitely not the way to go. It only leads to debt and economic stagnation. That’s why we are where we are today.

First, we need stability. Once we stop spending on subsidies for a sustained period of time, the gains will start accumulating and we can spend on areas of economic development. Infrastructure, health, tech, start ups, msmes, education, agriculture, increased oil production etc.

It is going to take a bit of time. There is no shortcut to it. Even foreign investors will flood in once they see we are finally serious about getting our macro economic priorities right.
Politics › Re: Tell Me A Country That Does Not Defend Her Currency by ALTERNATEID: 3:48pm On Oct 13, 2024
As we don’t have the revenue to keep defending the naira as we’ve seen in the last 12 years or so, let’s keep borrowing to keep petrol prices and exchange rate low.

At the time Buhari was leaving, our debt to revenue was already 97%. If Tinubu did not change course, we would be doing over 110% by now instead of 67%. We would have started defaulting and by now, no one will be willing to borrow us money again.

No one is against defending the naira, the problem is we don’t have the money to defend it. We need to improve and expand our economy to make more money and using all our earnings plus loan to defend the naira and pay PMS subsidy will not expand the economy. At least, it has not done that in the last 15 years.

Buhari did exactly what Peter Obi said he would do for 8 years and we all saw the sorry state of the economy that he left behind.

The judgement must be appealed and set aside by a superior court. Beside, only the FEC could have awarded such a contract. It’s obviously an illegally awarded contract.
