This vibration does it come from foot load traffic and have u try to also observe the structure when heavy vehicle pass through your site road as well ..

the new guy approach is quite expensive (assumption) because I dont know how the building is scheme it may be d best

using mesh and addition thickness of 50mm to the slab couple with finishes of tiles chairs table bed etc etc will reduce d vibration .

What I'm just trying to say is while dragging your contractor you may likely need to drag ur designer a little because d reason you paid 4 is rest of mind ..

Contractor as well should have an in house person to quickly help them check the design before they commence with construction ..

check should be carry out for as built structure before you proceed , some as built work can land u in problem big one.


or you should have posted this for long maybe a easy fix will be suggested .

Just for educational purpose only pls don't reference my view to d discussion,

Well I have discussed vibration here few months , its a structural issue which the designer may have check for

user of a structure are sensitive to vibration than others even though all structure vibrate but there's permissible allowance for this before u can feel it.

If the person feeling this vibration is not comfortable with it the mind can never be at rest even if a structural engineer carry out all assessment and assure nothing is wrong.

This will then call for some investigation by first viewing structural member how slender are they , checking the design and some construction pictures if available. Reinforcement etc

Then if all this check and it conforms its now the engineer decision according to design philosophy to load the structure lightly because this one is heavily loaded except the new person prob your foundation to ascertain well .. To be cont'd

Note: The fence is on the 120 length of the plot and its about 11 coaches from ground level.

Sorry about that the image u published does not give in depth of what could be wrong or what kind of collapse..

During this down pour do you notice wind in action?

Do you have cracks on this wall before they collapse?

Whenever the collapse occur does it get to the foundation part ?

Do you usually repair the collapse and rebuild from there or from scratch?

Where's your compound water channel to or do we have it pond at the back?

Is there adjoining properties behind the 120 fence ?

Describe the soil in a clearer terms?

The collapse occur at a specific segment all the time or any stretch of the 120ft

Show a clearer picture of the fence standing with the collapse part..

My consign is not identifying this only but your build wall also should be observe careful with this with the kind of pillar and casting on the fence..

good morning sir. Thanks for your advice and your concern. Of course I'm very much concerned about the safety of my workers and I will want to improve on that. The problem here is whether they will want to do same. Just like am here learning more and new ways to improve on my field, majority of my fellows wouldn't give change a chance. Their reason is simple,if it has been working why try to change it. So buying the kits isn't a problem but they using it.


So trying to balance it out is kind of a tricky issue. Majority of my workers are already bosses when I started learning this skill under my boss. It's one thing to give them job and pay them. But trying to tell them how to be safe is something they can never accept. After all they have years of experience ahead of you. Innovation isn't part of their way of life

Then its high time you train young lads and drop people with this odd mentality I believe I'm far younger than you and when I tell workers something and they complain I get them the next time i wont be happy with such person but I try to practice what I preach so they will adjust also..

Just get them fancy safety booth , there a face cap with shield inside very fancy also get them that one hype it well for them anyone that use it get additional package all na scope

Yes. I understand all these.

What you've described is at the conceptualization stage. Check, check and re-check by the relevant professionals. Again what you've described is for a big and maybe complex project of 12b. You will need the relevant professional to deliver every node and segment of the project. Shell does it. Cappa, Julius Beger, Bouygues etc all do it. You don't engage a builder to deliver a 12b project.

We are talking of a duplex, a four-flats, a bungalow. It is not advisable to over layer such 'small' projects with consultants here and there. We have this problem in the UK with the National Health Services (NHS) and Transport for London (TfL) and more recently the Covid-19 pandemic. Consultants, consultants and more consultants everywhere and collecting outrageous salaries with nothing to show for it. Parliamentary committees after parliamentary committee have documented that most of these consultants are poor value for money, duplicating and overlaying the process. I think engaging an almighty consultant for a 'simple' project like a duplex is not good value for money.

FACT its not a good value for money for simple project. A good builder will deliver well for this kind of job ..your argument is correct sir

@diordaves I understand from your point of view but it does not work like that in Engineering and construction.. But limited to kobokobo though.

You will not invest over 12bn in a project and think what are this professional doing here..

I state it clearly each of this checker will ensure you did not forget and question your basics of design because no two design are equal, big contractor for the fear of spoiling their name will redesign with their own consultant to check if everything I equally right and when they sense something you send calculations sheet and valid assumption of this..

Most foreign multinational will send your drawing to their parent company abroad consultant to check with their code and see how workable and where optimization may come in..

For new concept design this drawing will also be send to season construction engineer to see how workable the design drawing is..

Sir Engineering is diverse and some specialize solely on a niche while others knows all and will send to those that specialize to look deeper..

On issue of getting a good company that wont compromise such company will still ask for your consultant on site

There is also a case of too many cooks spoil the broth.

So where will it end? Should I also employ a checker to check the consultant? Should I also employ a checker to check the checker who checks the consultant? Where will the chain end? Who is the almighty; the final arbiter?

If you're an architect, you draw well. The bulk stops at your desk.

If you're a structural engineer, you structure well.

If you're an interior designer, you design well.

It is not good advice to over layer a project with too many unnecessary and overlapping processes. This will cause a delay. Each segment should take responsibility for their work and the client should hold responsible the respective segment for any poor outcome.

It is the client fault because the client didn't employ a marauding overseer. This is not on in the grand scheme of things. This is just spending money but not in the right places.

However, there is a place for a Project Manager whose duty it is to deliver the project.


Things don't really work that way , a structural drawing goes to ministry for approval which means another check from other Engineer sometimes internal check may omit some stuff or wont ask enough question from another point of view. If I design it goes through 6 checkers this drawing is a future guide which means this drawing have been conceptualize in paper before the construction team gets to work..

Now for site checker consultant

After this drawing contractor are found with it works in so so place we will do it like that here and they charge for same scope from the bill and it won't work like that..

The concrete grade they will mix for you with excuse of workability will definitely shock u .

Arrangements of reinforcement is not always right and they will cast and you the client will never know though they have used what was specified but in a wrong way..

Presently a PM and consultant on a project and I can tell you how the sub contactor don't like my presence much because dey feel I'm a time waster

I have also work on a project where all discipline have there consultant on site daily

Qs, mechanical , structural, Architect this exclude the contractor Team and they have their personal consultant to defend any suggestion or give reason why this must be that..

This is not for kobo kobo project ..give ur project to any Experience builder and visit regularly and have an understandable view things will work out fine

Bua is the cement of choice at this part of Nigeria. Dangote is second choice. I haven't seen lafarge like that

Lafarge is the king of Ready Mix concrete And choice of most project on the island (lagos) particularly works goes smooth and faster due to most tower project in lagos cheap when u factor time value of money and quality of concrete produce under site control..

There wahala is they may treaten to discharge ur concrete for challenges on ur site due to accessibility or unforseen circumstances

hello guys, Please Can you help with a solution to these cracks on my fence, they appear where I casted pillars with Iron rods so am surprised. I decided to chisel the cracks and fix wire mesh but it still cracked. is there a filler I can use? N.B The main building has no cracks

You did not show exact position of the column , picture too close , no picture to show how the cracks look like before the repair..

Did u add any additional loads to be block after repair?

Did you do some ground works like interlocking etc,

Can you remember how deep that pillar is in relative to the top level?

Or just the reinforcement is place in same level at the topsoil boarded and cast..

It may be some settlement issues on the column part trying to settle fine since its not chain with the block wall it moves down a little and u notice the crack...

One of assumed solution if its what am thinking separate the strip of the block wall from the column insert a polystyrene in between and plaster back.

That's if you don't like the crack .but I will advise you to wait a little bit longer and study how progressive the crack will appear and the width measurements

I dont think that's a good option for Nigerian property owner they will renovate without assessment or consultation they may knock out most walls to convert to another purpose or Glass partition

I will like someone with a good idea to help me out on how to build a low cost and strong one storeys building in Asaba, I have already secured a land and I have done surveyor but I have not gotten engineer with good structural design and secondly I would like the house to be for renting

For idea get a good symmetrical drawing all wall must b3 aligned ground and upper lesser cantilever this will make u have more axial load and lesser moment to deal with..

Get a good site personnel that can interprets structural drawing to it maximum this is very important. Because the drawing will be optimized to it minimum.

Tell Your structural the truth the steel you intend buying local or foreign all this will make you have a strong and economical frame ..

Modified hope you won't later rent it our for commercial purpose tell the designer your future plan as well because construction cost will differ

The construction drawing is paid for differently from the approval . This bill looks fine to be sincere

I remember few pages back a user is requesting for professional Number then this came to my mind you won't be on this thread na.

Structural drawing for a Residential building max of 1 Floor will cost you around 450k-560k ..

Foundation drawing for Gantries , LPG etc will cost 1m above

Sewage system, pool, generator house around 350k note this sewage system will be d small type.

Consultant on your project for a month cost around 450k to regulate your contractor..

The fee above is a true value of how consultancy charge ..

Most client will also request for a site personnel which will monitor contractor. This guys are contractor nightmare at times..

my point is this place is meant for contractor where past job and what they can do brings d job .

For the fence yes of course and the 3metre is not a rule but a Nigeria factor.
And construction methodology to me .

Reason below
The column provided is meant to stiffened the wall along that part for lateral force like wind not to act all through it length and destroy it over night. If there's column at 3.5m spacing it means u stiffened each bay and failure will be minimal if there is.

What type of foundation is recommended between an Inverted T beam or a Rectangular beam ?

An inverted T beam will be fine likewise a rectangular beam in absence of some investigation go for an inverted T..

When a lady on heel step on u. U will feel a pain and react to such (regular beam ) if she's on slippers and jump on u self u may tell her one more time baby , reason the load is spread on larger area

Presently I buy blocks at the rate of 300 for 9inches client is the one supplying this block himself ..This said block must not fall on someone leg its mini rock

The funniest thing about bore hole a compound adjacent mine at berger have done close to 7times now the next compound 3 times I think soil formation of my street get as he be ..
no one want to try much again due to similar case of collapsing we use well ..

.when other tenant complain landlord will insist he can't provide bore hole and it will sink and they will reference compound with stable own and street .
