But the driver accused them of being at fault, thereby mobilising hoodlums who attacked the officers and their principal with weapons and beat the deceased to a coma." A landslide on Sunday sank the kitchen of a home on Asutan Street at Uyo in Akwa Ibom State. The street was cut into two. Three children, who just finished making dinner were injured when the kitchen sank. Asutan Street and adjoining areas have been affected by erosion for over 30 years. House owner Francis Ikpe described the landslide as devastating. “It was a devastating experience. Three children were preparing food and about five minutes after leaving the kitchen, it collapsed. “The children were eating when suddenly there was a bang and the kitchen was buried.” According to him, the problem became serious when the government embarked on street repairs and construction of drainages. He said water from six adjoining streets was channelled to the place without a chamber to receive the volume of water. “I own House 16 on Asutan Street, the compound that is badly threatened by the erosion. We have lived with the erosion for more than 30 years, though it was not this disastrous. “But when the government started massive streets repairs and drainages, water from six adjoining streets, including barracks road, was diverted here and no chamber was built to receive the water. “A lot of damage has been done. When it rains, the water increases and this has been posing threats to life and property.” Ikpe urged the state to intervene before the house is completely swallowed by the slide. The government has ordered residents of erosion-ravaged areas to vacate to safer places. Commissioner for Environment and Petroleum Resources Charles Udoh issued the vacation order after inspecting critical erosion sites in Uyo. But residents said they could not relocate without government providing alternatives for them. Austin Iton appealed to the state to provide alternatives for them. Another resident insisted on a resettlement support from government. He vowed to drown than leave his ancestral home. https://thenationonlineng.net/landslide-sinks-homes-in-akwa-ibom/

olumide4christ:Let us no get things twisted the NDDC is a federal government establishment not states of the region, the board and heads are appointed by the federal government, states only have representatives with no real clout to determine policy direction or project decisions. So it beats me hollow how this has anything to do with resource control which is the crux of the matter. As it concern which region utilize their resources more it is subjective and you are entitled to your opinion as do i. However it is most troubling that you premised your argument against resource control on perceived corrupt leaders against denying the people of the Niger delta what is due them. Quite pathetic. |
maasoap:Just don't stay here and follow the bandwagon that believe the Niger delta governors embezzle their allocations..do your research into the development drives of the Niger delta governors from Akwa ibom, Rivers, Delta, C'Rivers even Bayelsa, you'll be amazed by the massive transformation going on in those states despite the meager 13%. The damage to the Niger delta environment as a result of oil exploration is unquantifiable coupled with the difficult terrains of the region, they need their God given resources to better the lots of their people and region. I still maintain resource control which is consistent with the principle of true federalism remains the acceptable way forward. |

maasoap:Resource control means managing the natural resource deposit in your locality and remitting percentages as tax and statutory levies to the centre...however it is manage shouldn't be anyone's business, the closer the revenues accruing to such resources is to the people who own it the better their lives and wellbeing, the way it is managed now leaves a lot to be desired, the old cliche of thieving governors and stuff is stale, it possibly cannot get any worse. |

sweetrace:No sweetheart...the only part of human anatomy which the entire body cannot do without is the head...the head sets the tone and agenda for the other parts to follow, the head is the master planner, chief instructor/ Strategist, way_paver and the identity...if the head is messed up just as the Nigerian head is ...the resultant effect is anarchy, confusion, hopelessness etal. It is known that the body responds to the body_language of the head. Sweetheart tell me honestly would allow this current head to be your role model or person Strategist..? |
sweetrace:Sweetheart the fish starts decaying from the head....If the head is rotten the body follows suit ..The man at the helm of affairs in this case the Fish head is a disaster. |
![]() NextLevel has bitten into diswan's wellbeing...he had better modified that his appeal to people like Arewa and co unfortunately for him the Arewa himself haven't been paid his N30k stipend for a while now. “I want to make a new song for the president and what I want to do this time around is to ask every of his supporter to fund the new song project. I want every one of you to contribute the sum of N1000 into my account to prove to Nigerians that Buhari’s fan base is still intact despite the economic hardship Nigerians are facing,” Rarara said." If the bolded does not telling you the working of the mind of a typical Buharist nothing else will. |
