$5 Billion Trapped Under Anambra Basin As Huge Gas Reserve Remains Stranded At a time Nigeria is in dire need of all the foreign exchange it can get, $5 billion is trapped under the Anambra basin, an under-explored area with undeveloped proved gas deposits estimated to be over 10 Trillion cubic feet (Tcf). The basin, reputed as next to Niger Delta in terms of hydrocarbon potentials, has a sedimentary thickness of 9km and covers about 3,000sqKm, with the eastern and western limits of the basin defined by Abakaliki and Ibadan. “The 10Tcf quoted for Anambra basin is based on few wells drilled. The value could go higher with more gas exploration. The figure as quoted will be a big boost to Nigeria reserve base that has solely depended on Niger Delta basin as its main reserve base”, said an official at Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), government’s oil and gas regulatory agency. “The discovered resources in the Anambra basin are in three categories; proved reserves, which perhaps are about 2Tcf, the remaining 8Tcf of the 10Tcf are probably unproved reserves and then the contingent resources. Thus, only about 2Tcf, which is proved is of any significant economic purposes as of now”, said Wumi Iledare, professor of energy economics at the Emerald Energy Institute, University of Port Harcourt. “Assuming the price of gas remains $2.50 per Million cubic feet (Mcf), the revenue to be injected into the economy in aggregate from Anambra basin would be about $5 billion over the next ten years using. This would expand local economy in terms of output and employment and the multiplier effect in the community would be visible”, Iledare added. Industry players expect government to also spur private investors into action in Anambra basin through policy support and incentives. “There is a significant scope for development of a gas market for power and industrial consumption in Anambra basin. To achieve this, policy support and incentives are required to encourage the development of gas resources and associated infrastructure”, Jeff Corey, Chief Operating Officer, Seven Energy, told a delegation from Nigerian Gas Association recently. “Anambra basin will open a whole new area to have gas supply for power and industrial use”, Corey added. The ultimate support the government can give, according to Dolapo Oni, Energy Research Analyst at Ecobank, is liberalizing the price for gas to enable a ‘willing buyer, willing seller’ arrangement. This will encourage investment in pipelines, gas processing facilities and gas production. “The more important question is how we monetise these reserves, either through the power sector or LNG or even gas-to-Liquids plants. The key advantage is that with pockets of gas reserves across the country, we can distribute power generation around the country more and reduce dependence on the grid”, said Oni said. Although conjectural, with right policy and incentives, experts say that within 18 months, two wells can be delivered within Anambra Basin dedicated to a combined cycle gas power plant. “Approximately, 1Billion cubic feet (Bcf) per year can generate about 1,000MW of electricity at 75 percent output efficiency and minimal losses. Hence, 2Tcf proved reserves in Anambra basin can generate 2,000MW of electricity for approximately 10 years” Iledare said. The Energy Research Analyst at Ecobank said there are significant investments in cottage industries in the south-eastern part of the country that could benefit immensely from small scale power projects that are distributed within the local distribution network. Asked what the regulatory agency can do to help jump-start bringing the vast gas resources in Anambra basin to the value chain; “DPR as a regulator may not necessarily do anything because it is not an operator or investor in exploration and production like NNPC. However, if there is a regulatory bottleneck, DPR can come in and facilitate early production in the gas assets”, said the DPR official. Within the Anambra basin, there are Ugwuoba and Igbariam gas fields; both contain some of the successfully explored gas wells in the basin. Some of the wells in the basin; Igbarim-1, Ajire-1, Akukwa-1 and Akukwa-2, were drilled by Shell-BP between 1938 and 1939 but were abandoned because at that time, the last thing they were looking for was gas. There are also claims by the Anambra state government that two of the Oil Prospecting Licenses (OPLs 915 and 916) within the basin which belongs to the state government-owned Orient Petroleum has an estimated reserve of 193 million barrels of oil condensate and 30Tcf of gas. Energy-starved Nigeria is a paradox of gas resource abundance. Its proven gas reserve is about 186Tcf, most of which come from associated gas, with prospects of the reserve base rising up to 600Tcf if deliberate efforts are made to explore for non-associated gas, yet 80 percent of its power plants which are gas-fired remain partially or perpetually offline as a result of non-availability of gas supplies. https://metrobusinessnews.com/2016/10/19/5-billion-trapped-under-anambra-basin-as-huge-gas-reserve-remains-stranded/ Credit: Anambralstson |

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State has expressed “immense satisfaction with Anambra people all over the world” for heeding his call for massive investments in the state. The satisfaction is contained in a statement in Awka today by the state Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, C. Don Adinuba. The commissioner disclosed that Chief Obiano and his economic team have since the new year been studying and analyzing short- term reports from all parts of the state on the state’s economy. “We are deeply impressed by the renewed confidence in the policy of the state administration in the last two years, as all the ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) are daily inundated by an increasing number of organizations and individuals throughout Nigeria and beyond that want to invest in our state”, Governor Obi declared. “Most of them may not be well known names or brands and, therefore, do not often attract media headlines, but they certainly mean business. “Some are establishing branches of their businesses here and some are shutting down their businesses elsewhere to establish them. “They range from furniture makers to producers of bottled water to modern supermarket owners to hoteliers, to restaurateurs to bakers to microfinance promoters to sophisticated furniture makers to manufacturers of toiletries like liquid soaps and producers of building materials”. Governor Obiano described the “unprecedented interest in home investments as a robust response to the state government’s Aku Luo Uno policy”, known as Think Home. The governor said that the new huge investment drive has seen land in particular appreciate in most places in the state, citing the example of Ihiala where a plot of land measuring 100 by 50 metres has in the last two years moved from 10 million to 50 million naira in value. “This is impressive by any standard in the world”, the Anambra chief executive declared. The people, he said, bought into our Think Home policy because they see tremendous value in it. “They are driven by patriotism and by market forces”, he argued. “Those who invest in Anambra State now make more profits than those who invest elsewhere. “Labour is cheaper here, though of great quality. Security is excellent. Together with the Transmission Company of Nigeria and the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company as well as the National Integrated Power Project, we are attacking electricity deficit in Anambra State in a way no government has done in our history.” Governor Obiano pledged that the state would see more radical development in the new year, even though the state receives one of the lowest allocations from the federation account monthly. “Our limited resources”, he observed”, “have not stopped us from beating other states hands down in areas like education and security as well as in the rate of rice development, nor have they stopped us from being the first state to pay salaries, allowances and pensions every month. “We will continue to be guided by values like integrity, honesty, service above self and the common good as well as solidarity with the less privileged. “We will, in addition, continue to employ the best strategy to make Anambra remain the most competitive state in Nigeria, so that it will remain in every ramification truly the Light of the Nation”. Signed C. Don Adinuba Commissioner for Information & Public Enlightenment. |

Christmas in Anambra: A Tale of Grandeur and Pizzazz. Christmas in Anambra is a bust of fireflies; a thousand colourful lights twinkling late into the night and warming the hearts and souls of a great people with love from the cold chill of the hamarttan. From Upper Iweka to Uli and from Ogwuikpele to Omasi, Anambra is a dazzling carnival of colour at Christmas; very much like the famous Ijele masquerade, spinning in its own orbit and spraying shimmering rays of light on onlookers. It is such a beauty, such a luminous spectacle to behold and to be swaddled in for a few precious moments. Every homestead, every homestead crackles with life. Whew! This has been the story since Chief Willie Obiano took over as Governor in 2014…since he set the night skies of Upper Iweka ablaze with blinding fireworks to blast what was once a den of robbers into a new friendly phase of existence. It is the story of a time in the life of a people; when leadership rose to its full height to reclaim its place in the hearts of everyday people. Governor Obiano’s choice of Upper Iweka as the spot to usher in the Yuletide Season in Anambra State is as symbolic as it is instructive. For years, Upper Iweka was the metaphor for crime and the total collapse of law and order in Anambra and much of South East Nigeria. It stood apart as the ultimate emblem of a dysfunctional society. Hardened criminals in the region saw it as their headquarters; a place where they could do anything without any challenge from the law. The reign of criminals lasted until Governor Obiano took the battle to them and swiftly turned Upper Iweka into a garden of hope. Since then, Anambra has maintained the tradition of kicking off Christmas celebrations at Upper Iweka to commemorate the swift transition of the state from darkness and fear to freedom and light. As in previous years, this year, Governor Obiano led the members of his Cabinet to Upper` Iweka to herald the Christmas season into the state by switching on the Christmas light. Residents of Upper Iweka and environs turned out to behold the spectacle as the fireworks rent the sky. It was a brisk affair as the governor also had to perform a similar ceremony at the expansive foregrounds of Kenneth Dike Memorial Library, Awka. It was a happy moment in Awka as the fireworks exploded to welcome Christmas to Anambra. But in reality though, Christmas actually came early to Anambra with two major events that drew the attention of the literary world to Awka. The first was the formal presentation of the book ‘dispossessed,’ a collection of poems written by James Eze, the governor’s spokesman. It was a remarkable event that attracted the Nigerian literati, including literary scholars from Canada, Lagos, Port Harcourt and other cities in the South East to Awka. The literary establishment suddenly woke up to the fact that Awka could play host to major events on the literary calendar. Indeed, the formal presentation of dispossessed’ marked a rupture on the cultural landscape of Anambra as one of the scholars who attended the event, Prof Nduka Otiono from Carleton University; Ottawa, Canada took several steps further to hold a free Creative Writing Master Class for the Post Graduate students of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University. The second major literary event was the Purple Hibiscus Creative Writing Workshop hosted by Chimamanda Adichie in Awka about the same time. The workshop attracted budding creative writers from Nigeria, Kenya and Zimbabwe. These two events opened a fresh chapter to the Christmas in Anambra experience. The truth though is that Christmas came early to Anambra this year. It began with the frantic fixing of potholes on roads devastated by heavy rainfall. It was a fulfillment of Obiano’s promise to fix all broken roads across the state before Christmas. Ultramodern machines known as Durapatchers were swiftly deployed to fix broken roads and get the state ready for the influx of returnees coming home to reunite with their families and friends at Christmas. When the story is told, it will be remembered that one of the highlights of the 2019 Christmas in Anambra is the Master Class in entrepreneurial studies organized by the Stanel Group in partnership with Access Bank and Innoson Motors for the youths of Anambra State. The event attracted leading entrepreneurs and industrialists as well as other experts who have a fair knowledge of how the Nigerian economy works. It was heavily over-subscribed as Anambra youths thronged the venue to grab ideas that would aide their success in life. The programme was not all business and no fun. Frontline musicians and comedians were also on hand to spark up the evening for the youths after the serious business sessions during the day. However, Christmas in Anambra went a few notches higher on December 20th when the state government decided to hold a Carol of Nine Lessons at the Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka. It was a splendid night of special performances from different choirs before a large audience. The night also witnessed an amazing performance by the community of people living with disability. It began with a bible reading by the visually impaired lawyer, Bar Chuks Ezewuzie who is also a Special Adviser on Disability Affairs to the governor. Ezewuzie charmed the audience with a masterful reading that betrayed nothing of his disability and set the tone for the rest of the night. The Special Carol night was not just about Christmas songs. Igbo rap phenomenon; Phyno led Slow Dogg and Mr Reel on a lyrical spree to spice up the evening and enhance the richness of the experience. After the Carol Nights and big musical concerts in the cities, Christmas celebration shifted to the hinterlands where different communities exploded with an assortment of high profile wedding ceremonies, Ofala ceremonies, special anniversary celebrations, Ozo title-taking ceremonies and different community carnivals, football tournaments, masquerade festivals and big family reunions. There were also special lectures, symposium, traditional wrestling bouts, community development fundraising and other activities that enhance social harmony and a deeper sense of community and kinship among the people. Children were not left out of the circle of merriment. The wife of the governor, Dr Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano hosted a special Christmas Party for children at the Governor’s Lodge that offered Anambra children a taste of Christmas. Across the length and breadth of Anambra, festivity was in the air. Hotels were fully booked ahead of Christmas. Night clubs, bars and drinking gardens were throbbing with merriment. Everywhere was aglow with excitement as Ndi Anambra enjoyed a lovely Christmas with their loved ones under the protective gaze of the state. Yes, Governor Obiano’s heavy investment in security has turned Anambra into an island of peace. Motorists crisscrossed the state at whatever time of the night without fear as the citizens savoured the glorious streetlights that lit up every nook and cranny of the state and the high security arrangement offered by the government to socialize and interact with one another. In the end, memories were made, family ties strengthened and development plans hatched in a peaceful, friendly and superbly electrifying environment that governor Willie Obiano has offered his people. That is Christmas in Anambra. That is the Spirit of Anambra.
